How to Remove Gel X Nails

TL;DR

  • File down most of the product before soaking in acetone.
  • Consider using a peel-off base for easier removal in the future.

Filing and Soaking Technique

The most recommended method for removing Gel X nails involves filing down the bulk of the nail before soaking. This can be done either by hand or using an e-file with a medium/coarse bit [2:1]. It's crucial to file off about 85-90% of the product to make the soaking process more effective [1:4]. After filing, soak your nails in pure acetone using foil wraps or soak-off clips [2:2]. Warming the acetone can also aid in the removal process [4:5].

Using Peel-Off Base Coats

For those looking to avoid damage during removal, using a peel-off base coat is a popular alternative. Products like Jello Jello peel-off base allow you to pop the nails off without damaging your natural nails [1:8][3:2]. However, keep in mind that peel-off bases might not last as long as traditional methods [1:10].

Avoiding Damage to Natural Nails

It's important not to peel off the nails forcefully, as this can cause significant damage to your natural nails [2:2]. Instead, patience and careful soaking are key. If you're concerned about nail health, consider keeping a layer of builder or hard gel on your nails to protect them from acetone damage [1:3].

Maintaining Nail Designs

If you want to preserve the design on your Gel X nails, unfortunately, soaking them off will likely ruin the design [5:5]. One option is to redo the design on press-on nails, which can be reused [5:2]. Alternatively, you can file off the color/design and do an infill with builder gel before reshaping and rebalancing the nails [5:6].

Additional Tips

Different brands of nail tips may soak off differently, so it might be worth experimenting with different products to find one that suits your needs [1:6]. Also, if you're struggling with removal, consider consulting a professional who can ensure safe and efficient removal without damaging your natural nails [4:3].

ORIGINAL POST

Hi, I’m new-ish and while I’ve been doing pretty immaculate prep and application, whenever it comes to the removal process I’m terrible. I’m not sure what I’ve been doing wrong but the nails are STUCK to my natural nail.

I’ve tried acetone soaks, foils wraps, soapy oily water, e-file… you name it! And I NEVER get them off without damage to my natural nail. They always stick even though I’m being careful not to file my nails and be patient with the acetone (doing multiple foils too). The gel x just seems to stick so bad to my natural nails that I’m pretty much ready to give gelx up. Any tips?

I’m using apres and beetles nail glue (perhaps it’s the glue?).

Thank you so much in advance!

If you use a super coarse drill bit that’s specifically for removal, the process is way faster. I use a 3X coarse bit with a rounded top to prevent accidentally cutting the cuticles. It looks kinda intimidating at first but it gets the job done so much quicker. Drill the nail down as much as you can until you’re almost to your natural nail then soak off the rest, the soak shouldn’t take more than 15 minutes if you drilled the nails thin enough.

There's no need to remove all the product each time - it's not good for your nail health. You can just file the color off and do a fill and either keep that shape (since most people do anyway) or file them into one that can be done from your current one - fills are supposed to be done every service and removal is only supposed to done once a year because of the damage it causes. A way to avoid acetone damage is to always keep a layer of product (builder /hard gel etc even acrylic) on your nails to keep from damaging your natural nails for example when you're drilling you'll know when you reach that layer to stop, plus it just protects them from tearing, ripping, chipping etc. I and many techs never have bare nails even if I don't want long extensions at the time I'm still protecting them and then I just do my usual prep and application right over it.

you need to file down about 85-90% of the product and then soak the rest off with acetone and foils.

I can take all my nails off in less than 5 minutes with this. Before I was soaking scraping filing soaking…I even got one of those acetone warmer things which helped a bit but it was awful. This is just the way to go and doesn’t affect longevity at least for me

Gel x nail removal tips

Posted by Resident_Job_1362 · in r/GelX_Nails · 8 months ago

Hii i have a gel x nail set on but one has lifted a lot. Only one side of the nail is basically stuck while the other completely lifted. I was trying to just peel it right off but it’s still very stuck to part of my natural nail and hurts when I try. I don’t want to ruin my natural nail but I can really file it down without moving it either. Any tips to try and remove the gel x nail??

Never peel a nail extension off. Thats how you hurt your natural nails. Soak them in pure acetone and they will come off.

Peel off base coat

Did you rip these off? Careful and patient soaking off is where it's at if you're not using peel off, which I personally have never tried. You'll need to file off the top coat, if you feel comfortable filling off the bulk of the product it'll make soak off faster, just be careful not to hit the natural nail. I recommend hand filing unless you're a professional trained on the e-file and have experience too. Soak for ten minutes at a time, with the clips or with aluminum, soaking in loose acetone isn't necessary, it wastes acetone and there's no need to soak your skin like that, it'll just get unnecessarily dry that way. Never ever ever pick or pry at the gel, you should only be scraping off stuff that comes off easily. This is usually where people get impatient and end up forcing the gel off, which is literally exactly the same as ripping them off so it defeats the purpose of soaking off. Most likely you'll need to do two or more rounds of ten minute soaks, it's not a quick process. But if you're patient you won't damage your nails.

But like..... Op? Your nails are effed right now. Best practice would be to fully grow out and clip off that damage before you attempt any other nail enhancement. Whatever you put on there isn't going to have a solid foundation to hold onto since you have that damage, and therefore it'll lift or pop off, creating even more damage and perpetuating the problem eternally. Grow it out, try again and just be more patient and careful with removals from now on

help !!!!!!!! I can’t take them off

LMAO please excuse my really bad Hannah but I really do need some assistance trying to takeoff these nails. This is my first time taking off gel X nails alone without my mom and I’m really scared because I don’t know what’s going on and I have a birthday party at five and it’s currently 8 AM and I’m really scared that I’m not gonna be able to take this off by then.

I’ve been soaking them and acetone for about 30 minutes and I tried to pick it off. I did file them beforehand.

It’s not coming out and it’s looking like this and I wanna know if it’s normal and if I should keep going because this is how it usually looks like if not, please recommend some tips !

Need help ASAP

Put a small bowl that fits your hand inside a larger bowl with warm water. Pour the acetone and your nails into that small bowl. I also don't believe you filed down enough product. After about ten minutes, remove your hand, file and scrape off what you can, soak again for any remaining residue.

Hi if it’s OK I would like to ask a follow up question how would I get rid of the acetone after I’m done?

5 upvotes on reddit
StormiAura49 · 2 months ago

Yes like she said either soak it up with paper towels and trash it OR leave it to sit, it will evaporate and dry up and any bits of nails will dry up and can be simply peeled out of the bowl and trashed

20 upvotes on reddit
livingtheredlife · 2 months ago

I use my leftover paper towels to absorb it and toss in the trash!

Make sure no water gets into the acetone bowl. Halfway up the sides of the smaller bowl will be enough.

Were the nails painted that nude colour? If so you'll needs to file down a lot more

If you got them done in at a shop then it'll be easier to just go back to them for removal if you don't know what adhesive/products was actually used

jonnydidueverloveme · OP · 2 months ago

I know they were actually an almond French tip and they were much longer than that. I wouldn’t be able to go to the salon because I need my nails gone and looking normal by 5 PM.

Is there really no other way for me to remove them?

2 upvotes on reddit
I
ILive4Banans · 2 months ago

Then you need to carefully file down the colour coat a lot more until you hit the actual gelx tip, the thinner it is the easier it'll be to soak off

Not unless they were glued on with regular nail glue. Gel adheres to the nail plate so the only option is soaking them off or extreme nail damage. No one wants that. You can always redo them as press ons and use whenever you want

7 upvotes on reddit
cozyegg · 1 month ago

Not at this point, no. You’ll have to remove them normally, unfortunately.

In the future you can use a peel off base gel (I use Diami, but a lot of people like Jello Jello) which will let you pop the nails off in one piece without damaging your nails.

6 upvotes on reddit
lxnyx · 1 month ago

Do you cover the full nail with peel off? And whats your prep process before?

1 upvotes on reddit
cozyegg · 1 month ago

Do all your normal prep, but skip bonder if you normally use it. Leave space around your cuticle and side walls, but if you’re doing extensions or capping the free edge well you can take the peel off base all the way to the tip. I use a base gel after that to make sure the adhesion is good around the edges.

If you want to reuse the nails, you need to remove the peel off gel that’s left in the nails before you glue them back on with air dry glue, I usually rub a little cuticle oil in, scrape it out with a cuticle pusher, and then clean it well with alcohol.

Not really, I don't think. If you don't want to soak off you'll have to file off the color/design, use builder gel to do an infill, reshape & rebalance the nails, and then redo your color/design.

6 upvotes on reddit
theMarianasTrench · OP · 1 month ago

The whole idea is, I would love to just take the whole design off so that I can keep them because I love how much time and effort went into styling them, but the only way to get off the adhesion would be soaking them off, but that surely would ruin the design on them😭 dang

But to answer your question a glue remover can help you pop off (but I wouldn't use it often because I developed onycholysis from Dashing Diva Magic Off.)

How do you remove Gel X nails?

Posted by Different_Pen_9229 · in r/Nails · 5 months ago

I see that a lot of video tutorials say to file the surface of the nails first, then soak in acetone for 10-15 minutes, and then scrape off the rest. But doesn't GelX use the plastic nail tips? So shouldn't it impede the filing and soaking removal process? Does filing the nails also file away the nail tips? Or do the nail tips somehow dissolve when soaked in acetone?

There's paint stripper in it and if you get it on your skin, it can burn. Not only are gel removers dangerous, the paint stripper ingredient is illegal to use in cosmetics.

They're referring to the comment that suggested using the remover that comes in a nail polish bottle that you brush on just like nail polish.

Another commenter recommended them, but it's quite a dangerous product to use

3 upvotes on reddit
Prize_Imagination439 · 5 months ago

No, because you are filing off of the top coat, so that the acetone (or whatever soak off you're using) can reach the nail polish.

The acetone will also dissolve whatever glue was used to adhere the tip.

Like another comment said, cut the length of the tip down, and then proceed like normal (file, soak, scrape off)

Filing off most of them and soaking in acetone is the way. Acetone is drying, so you just need to moisturize real well after

I use an Aprés drill bit to debulk and just recently got those nail soak tubs off Amazon that has a slot for hot water and a slot for acetone. Cut your nails down, debulk with e-file, and then soak tips in pure acetone. I put cuticle oil on the base before putting in acetone which helps from drying out too much. Then just scrape the gunk off and lightly buff any remaining grittiness. Hope this helps!

1 upvotes on reddit
Ornery_Pineapple72 · 8 months ago

Also don't use a bowl of acetone, use cotton soaked in acetone and either wrap in foil or use the clips

1 upvotes on reddit
Ornery_Pineapple72 · 8 months ago

What destroys your nails is impatient removal, you shouldn't use any force to pick or pry off the gel during removal, if you feel the need you just have to soak again and soften them more. Also the other comments are helpful steps, just BE PATIENT!

At home Gel-X removal tips?

Posted by ceruleancascades · in r/Nails · 3 years ago

This is my second time getting Gel-X tips and it’s been over a month so they’re starting to lift, one has already come off and left that nail peeling even though I didn’t rip them off. My nail tech all booked until first week of December and I need to remove these before they lift even worse.

The first time I tried at-home removal it didn’t work well because I used Target brand nail polish remover and the wrapping in foil method. I’ve been looking online for a pure 100% acetone but keep seeing bad reviews for popular ones and I’m not sure what to get.

I would appreciate any recommendations on which 100% pure acetone to buy that will easily remove Gel-X!

You’ll need to buff or file the top coat off then soak the nails with acetone. You can get 100% acetone from most stores that sell nail products, including Target. Breaking through the top coat will be important otherwise you’ll be wasting a lot of time with no results.

Seeing it, I would’ve filled all of it off with a drill or a file in your case. 20 min with acetone could be very damaging to the nail and it's not like gel pops off easily anyway. Drill would’ve saved lots of time.

You likely will get more traction with your question over at r/DIYGelNails. This sub tends to lean more toward traditional nail polish.

To answer your question, yes, pure acetone is typically what people mean when they are talking about soaking the nails off. You do need to file off the top coat at least for it to work.

If you’re inexperienced with a nail drill, I would honestly use a hand file. It seems like the most damage DIYers do to their nails comes from removal. Me included. If you’re determined to do it at home, I recommend you watch Nail Career Education on YouTube. She has a ton of tutorials on using a drill at home and is an actual licensed tech who teaches courses on nails rather than a self taught YouTuber.

how to remove gel x nails

Here are key steps to safely remove Gel X nails:

  1. Gather Supplies:

    • Acetone (100% pure)
    • Cotton balls or pads
    • Aluminum foil or nail clips
    • Nail file
    • Cuticle pusher or orange stick
    • Moisturizer or cuticle oil
  2. File the Top Layer:

    • Gently file the shiny top layer of the Gel X nails using a nail file. This helps the acetone penetrate better.
  3. Soak Cotton Balls:

    • Soak cotton balls or pads in acetone. Ensure they are saturated but not dripping.
  4. Apply Cotton to Nails:

    • Place the soaked cotton on each nail and wrap it with aluminum foil or use nail clips to hold it in place. This creates a warm environment that helps the acetone work more effectively.
  5. Wait:

    • Leave the cotton on for about 15-20 minutes. Check one nail to see if the gel is lifting.
  6. Remove Gel:

    • After soaking, gently push the gel off using a cuticle pusher or orange stick. If it doesn’t come off easily, re-soak for a few more minutes.
  7. Moisturize:

    • Once all the gel is removed, wash your hands and apply moisturizer or cuticle oil to nourish your nails and skin.

Important Tips:

  • Avoid peeling or forcing off the gel, as this can damage your natural nails.
  • If you're unsure or uncomfortable, consider visiting a professional nail technician for removal.
  • Regularly moisturizing your nails and cuticles after removal can help maintain their health.
