TL;DR Explore techniques like ombre, stamping, marble designs, and use resources like YouTube tutorials and Pinterest for inspiration.
Popular Techniques
Gel nails offer a variety of design possibilities, such as ombre effects, stamping, and marble patterns. Using multiple colors on a flat brush can create unique marble designs [1]. Stamping is another popular technique that can be used to create intricate designs with ease
[3]. These methods allow for creativity and personalization in nail art.
Resources for Learning
For those new to gel nail art, there are numerous resources available online. The "Nail Career Education" YouTube channel provides comprehensive tutorials on gel nail techniques [1:1]. Additionally, Pinterest is a valuable source for finding nail art inspiration and tutorials
[1:2]. These platforms can help beginners learn new techniques and improve their skills.
Tools and Materials
Using the right tools and materials can significantly impact the quality of your nail art. A solid gel palette is recommended for creating stable and smooth lines [4:1]. When working with press-on nails, sticky tabs or ordinary nail glue are suggested over UV glue for better adhesion
[5:3]. Selecting high-quality products will enhance the durability and appearance of your designs.
Safety and Technique
It's important to practice safe techniques when applying gel nails. Avoid excessive contact with cuticles to prevent skin irritation [4:2]. Proper shaping of nails is also crucial to achieving a polished look. Beginners should focus on refining their skills and ensuring safety while experimenting with different designs.
Feedback and Improvement
Receiving feedback from others can be beneficial for improving nail art skills. Sharing designs and asking for constructive criticism can provide insights into areas for improvement [5]. Engaging with nail art communities online can also offer support and inspiration for developing new ideas and techniques.
I've just recently started playing with UV cured gel polish and now I'm bored with a plain manicure. Are there any tips for doing art or designs with gel? I'd like to at least ombre or stamp over it. Maybe get real ambitious and try that thing where you pick up multiple colors on a flat brush and lay them over your nail in a marble pattern. What are your favorite techniques when using gel on natural nails? Anything I need to avoid?
If you go to Pinterest and search nail art or nail art tutorials, a ton come up! Good luck!
Nail Career Education Is an excellent channel with lots of tips on gel and designs
Been doing my own gel manicures for years, but this thread made me want to try something other than a solid color :) Thanks for the inspo!
Love them ❤️❤️
been doing nail art for about a year now even though I'm nowhere near being good at it, always got so annoyed that they would chip off in a week or two. finally decided to get what's necessary for gel nails and here we are now. i didn't get gel polish so the red here is just regular polish on top of builder gel, topped up with gel top coat, hope that's okay to do? did the marble design with the nail stamping thing, put some golden lines on it although they're not visible on camera. saw inspo for this design on Pinterest I think. what do you think? i'm very very open for advice and feedback at this point!
Watch the cuticles. Literally scroll this sub from the last week and peep what happens when you are “learning” and get too much skin contact.
Also, I’d practice shaping your nails. They’re a little wonky.
The overall design is super cute and I definitely see the vision, keep it up but please just be safer about it. Either regular polish on your natural nail or make gel press ons with stands.
Practice makes perfect and these are Amazing for a beginner!! 💕💕My suggestion would be look into a solid gel pallet, the gels are thicker and more stable so they don’t spread and are easier to smoothen the lines out! This is the one I use and I really like it!
Second suggestion is for straight lines: Gel your brush and wipe the excess Find the starting point of the line on the nail Stabilize the brush as much as possible then touch and drag the Nail down while the brush is still!
Always loved painting nails, thinking up designs but only recently got a hold of some tools so I could actually practice. Some are better than others, some took 5 minutes while some took around 20 😄
Just looking for some feedback constructive & positive hopefully 😬☺️
Using beetles gel, random colours but if you do see a specific one I may be able to match it to a bottle bit some are mixed 🎨🩷
i LOVE THESE!
i read someplace once that uv lights only work on nail tips (i'd be using the full cover ones, so not sure if they're still called that) that are clear. do you use these with a UV light and do you have any trouble with adhesion? thank you in advance!!
If they are clear or even matte I believe the uv glue would be ok but when the light can't penetrate the surface I don't think you'd be able to get a full cure from what I've read :)
thank you! i'm trying to do my research so i can start doing gels at home, but i've got lots to learn. i appreciate your response!
I'd not use a uv glue with full cover tips personally, I'm sure may work for some people but I'd never suggest it. With full cover tips I'd go with sticky tabs or ordinary nail glue. Hope this helps.
Wowww absolutely love these! Are you able to reuse these pretty easily?
From what I've seen they generally are if treated right but couldn't comment on longevity as I'm currently using builder gel. If I was making sets id obviously go through some product testing :) Just used the left of tips I had from tomica and another off amazon. Hope this helps & sorry if it didn't 😄😇
Nice collection you have there
Thank-you 😀
(press ons I made for myself for post attention, they've been used a couple times and I didn't know how to apply the matte top coat properly, so don't come for me)
Also I DO offer gel x on my menu so this isn't totally off topic, I promise
What are some of the things you would expect any nail artist to be able to do if you wanted to add art last second (and if you both have time for it of course)?
The things I've come up with so far are:
French of all kinds Ombre of all kinds Different designs with magnetic gels Flowers Hearts Animal prints, including tortoise shell Text
And then for some reason I just lose my brain and can't think of anything like.... Simple ish. All I can think of is these like elaborate anime characters or a whole a$$ landscape over all the nails. Toss me your ideas so my brain can stop melting over this!
I'm a licensed nail tech and absolutely love doing hand painted gel art. So I'm trying to make displays for my space with examples of what I can do (which is honestly anything but photo realistic portraits, animated characters are possible but take time, otherwise I consider myself a slightly copy and paste kind of artist, if you show me something I can do it almost exactly but with my own spin on it).
When I get my displays finished I'll post them too, waiting till I have a more full looking collection of examples. Thanks in advance!
The most common requests I've gotten from clients over my career (which, granted, hasn't been super long yet, I'm only a few years into the game) have been french tips of various styles and isolated chrome. Dear god, so much isolated chrome. It's worth mastering it if you can, and definitely worth displaying it since it's such a popular choice. Flowers are also very common, I've done so many sets with hibiscus flowers and even just plain dotting tool flowers.
Otherwise, seasonal nails. Tons and tons of seasonal nails. Christmas, Halloween, St. Patrick's Day, Valentine's Day, Canada Day (probably even more 4th of July sets if you're American, since Canada Day isn't as major here). So many clients love seasonal sets, you can't go wrong with having a variety of seasonal art displayed.
Omgeee this is a great list!
A few rapid fire ideas for ya!
1.cherries
3.dark background and various dot sizes for a starry sky
5.zebra stripes
Hearts
Dotted flowers
Marble swirl
Drips
Firework
Red bottoms
Not sure if these all count as simple 😅 I do my own nails so I go a little crazy with designs
You may already have them but its a good idea for a nail tech to get at least a small collection of stamping plates. They’re an extremely fast way to add art and you can get very creative with them once you get comfortable using them.
There’s also cheap sets—I have a combo of nice and inexpensive ones I mix and match.
I can do my own painting from scratch but it takes me much longer. If I don’t want to spend over an hour on one nail I do stamping plates.
Oh dang you must have read my mind, I was just looking into stamping plates again. I had attempted them a while back and got so frustrated that I trashed the idea, realizing recently it was a combination of not knowing the technique well enough and also using sub par products. I was looking into maniology just hours before posting this.... I shall be now looking into it a little harder, cuz that makes so much sense, it's quick, easy add on, cleaner application than some stickers, so it's worth mastering it.... Thanks for the push
When I first got my plates I could not get any of the various types of stampers I bought to pick them up. I’d like to be able to tell you I figured out a “trick” but all I did was buy both lacquer and gel labeled as “stamping polish” with a higher quality plate (Maniology) then just determinedly kept at it until I finally picked an image up with the stamper. It took forever and I almost thought the whole thing was a scam.
Now when I do it, it always works even if I’m using the cheap plates and regular nail polish that isn’t for stamping. I guess my muscle memory now knows the right pressure to use or something? All that to say: don’t give up. Practice literally makes perfect… but maybe make yourself a drink so you don’t start crying. 😂
Flames
All the different types of French and ombré. Swirls, hearts, cherries, rhinestones, flowers, encapsulated glitter, chrome over the whole nail, simpler linework. Simple seasonal designs. I would consider chrome or cateye designs and 3D designs, as well as elaborate line work or hand painted designs as complicated enough that it’s not essential.
I just got a whole bunch of colors and wanted to try a fun design. I am in love with them
they are beautiful! Love the white base with the nail art pictures! Hugs!
i’m not sure which is most pigmented and i currently have to do multiple coats
I have enjoyed using the Beetles polish from Amazon. They are decently priced and have a range of colors that come with a liner brush. I only use one coat as opposed to two with other gels, and my nails look less lumpy as a result.
Luxa polishes and art pots are EXTREMELY pigmented. Also Sugar & Cream gel polish and art pots. Kiara Sky also sells nail art liners
Wowbao polishes are amazing! Highly Pigmented but not super thick to work with. I’ve tried a fair few including naio nails and glitterbels and wowbao takes the medal for me. I’ve used it for a year now and haven’t experienced any issues 😀
Have you tried the glitterbels unbelievable gels? They’re soo much better for art so pigmented compared to the gel polish x
That’s what made me switch funnily enough. I got the unbelievable ones and they had little tiny fibres in them 🤷🏼♀️ I decided to try an alternative and found wowbao! 😊 For in depth nail art the liner gels they do are perfect, very similar consistency to the unbelievable gels 👍🏼
if you're looking for products specifically made for doing art with, young nails has a pretty nice set of paint pots for a decent price to get you started. if you buy the whole pack they also send you a micro detail brush that's really nice.
i'm also a fan of presto paint pots, especially the black and white. it's so rich. their creamy colours are the best in my experience but can be a bit pricier than other options ($11-ish per pot but they do last a long time). ageha also has some good ones in the same price range, i like their pastel line and their gold art paint -not liner- is the besttttt. some of their other products are on the sheer side so i only really use their pastels.
one of my coworkers uses the enail couture paints and swears by them. i haven't played with them before but her art always comes out great!
nail labo is a great website to buy from. i'd avoid amazon because their quality control is awful and there's no way to guarantee what you're receiving is legit.
Hello girliessss!! Recently saw a post on here about nails and I didn't know we could do that so I saw my cue and wanted to share some nail-art l've done so far.
I'm not at all a professional (fairly obvious) l've just ALWAYS loved art and nailpaint. Tho I'm not so skilled at it but i love doing it!!!!
Here are some gel nails l've done on my self, sister and friends!!!

Dude how do you do it on the dominant hand ??? I can barely apply a normal layer of nail paint let alone do any art
Very pretty 😍 Please be careful with not getting them on the skin ◡̈
You’re so talented op! Nude bases suit you so much and look very chic! Wish i could do my nails too😭

Pleeaaaassseeee tell me how you learnt it and what equipment, paint you used.
I am sorry, I don't even apply nail paint but I want to. So pretty especially the last 3 and the first one.

Nail Shape: Consider the shape of your nails (square, almond, stiletto) as it can influence the design. Certain designs may look better on specific shapes.
Tools Needed: Use the right tools for precision, such as nail art brushes, dotting tools, and striping tape. These can help achieve clean lines and detailed designs.
Top Coat: Always finish with a high-quality top coat to seal your design and add shine. This also helps to prolong the life of your gel nails.
