Understanding Map Layers
In "Shadow of the Erdtree," the map is vertically layered, which can be a bit confusing for new players. The DLC starts with players at a higher elevation, and exploring involves finding ways to descend through these layers [1:1]. This vertical structure means that some areas might not be immediately visible or accessible from your current position, so it's crucial to look for paths leading downwards.
Exploration Tips
Exploring away from the obvious paths is key to discovering hidden areas. While major roads lead you through a linear progression of bosses, veering off these paths can reveal secrets and shortcuts [1:1]. Additionally, Scadutree Blessings are significant in this DLC as they affect your damage output and intake, making them more important than leveling up
[1:1].
Hidden Secrets and Items
There are several well-hidden secrets and items in the DLC. For example, the Stone-Sheathed Sword altar in Fog Rift catacombs is concealed behind two secret entrances [2:1]. Similarly, Miquella's Great Rune can be used strategically during battles
[2:2]. Exploring thoroughly and interacting with various elements in the environment can lead to uncovering these secrets.
Summoning Mechanics
Some areas allow summoning ashes without an apparent boss nearby, indicating potential hidden mechanics or quests. Near a tree resembling the ErdTree, players can summon ashes, suggesting there might be a special interaction or event tied to this location [3:1]
[3:3]. It's worth experimenting with different summons or returning after certain conditions are met.
Utilizing Game Features
A useful tip for locating collectibles is using the Select button on a controller while inside a sub-area. This provides a breakdown of missing items specific to that area, helping narrow down searches [5:0]. Knowing the names of sub-areas can also assist in identifying where you might have missed something.
By understanding the map's verticality, exploring beyond main paths, and utilizing game features, players can uncover many hidden areas and secrets within "Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree."
I am having trouble getting around in Shadow of the Erd Tree. I'm trying to get to new sections but can't figure out what roads to traverse. I figured out that one section was locked behind a boss (Rellana).
Is every section locked behind a boss fight?
I've tried googling answers and searching this sub with no luck. Maybe I'm just dumb. I am brand new to Souls games. The base game was pretty wide open and I could go almost anywhere right from the beginning.
you can go down from a place near thollier
if you already reached shadow altus, search moorth ruins
Thank you. I’ll try both these tips.
Very few sections are really locked behind bosses, matter of fact you can bypass Rellana entirely as well.
The obvious roads lead along a very linear and short path from major boss to major boss, but you'll want to move away from that path and explore a lot. Scadutree Blessings are the most important thing to look out for, since they significantly affect how much damage you do and take in return; they are more important than leveling in the DLC.
In general, the map in the DLC is vertically layered, with you starting quite high up. So look for ways down, hidden openings in cliff walls or even a cave might lead to a new part of the map you haven't seen before, or only seen from afar. A lot is also purely optional and can be missed when you just follow the most obvious paths.
In general, this goes back to the days of DS1, where understanding the interconnected nature of the world and how to unlock the connections was as much part of the puzzle as was combat and bosses. Base game ER is more like an open field, where you can just more or less go straight to where you want to go, with few notable exceptions. The DLC on the other hand is more like multiple smaller fields partially layered on top and connected via tunnels and bridges.
Thank you. Reading this made so much sense. I was assuming the map was flat. I never realized it was levels stacked on top of one another.
I feel like people know a lot of Elden Ring secrets, but DLC secrets aren’t as talked about
What cool discoveries have you found?
Miquella's Great Rune can be used during a battle with PCR to undo the effect of his Grab attack.
This has always been so sad to me. The broken great rune was such a big deal for the plot of the dlc, then you get it and it just... is equal to a roll. If you just dont get grabbed this is just a pointless item.
I get that they probably didnt want a morgott shackle situation, but i feel like it couldve been more useful, and by doing that maybe give an actual reason to go fight sunflower
'The entrance to that region of the map isnt in this region of the map'
To get this, you need to cure one of the Pests. Few have fully completed Moore's quest.
I always kill Moore 🗣️🗣️🗣️🔥🔥🔥(I hate my life)
Sad... forever...
The Jolan and Anna summon?
The Stone-Sheathed Sword altar hidden in Fog Rift catacombs.
Most people use the ones in Rauh and Recluses River. The catacomb one is very well hidden, it’s behind 2 secrets, and given the first one has a reward (blink bolt ash) people assume that’s all that’s there.
always always try to get on top of the smashy things. always
Thank you for this completely missed both.
I was exploring the DLC world when I came across this tree that resembles the ErdTree in a way. The weird thing about this tree though is that you can summon Ashes near this tree. This is kind of weird because there are no bosses near this area. I've tried summoning a couple of things but to no prevail, but I was thinking that there might be a secret if you summon the right thing? If anybody knows or finds out please let me know.
My guess you'd need to summon/something to get a special dialog scene. Like with the >!Jellyfish!<
I've been there (I believe) but didn't think much of it. Are there any ghosts, or other indicators on who/what are around (corpses, items, etc.)?
Your spoiler tag isn't working, needs to be >! Rather than <!
Good call. I can never remember that Thanks
I was thinking the same thing, something like the jellyfish. There are the perfumers around the tree. I tried summoning the perfumer ash but it did not do anything. I do believe it is something like the jellyfish though.
Just confirmed, seems to actually be tied to that big flower that's in the tunnel there.
Did a few tests, you can leave the tunnel and come back to summon again, as long as you don't kill the big flower. If you kill that one, you can only summon once, then not again until the next grace reset.
Isn’t there a field boss there? One of the giant rune bear things?
This. It's just within the summon zone for the bear fight since its right above
Please try to kill the Giant Rune Bear and then go back to that location, if you’re still able to summon then it’s something else.
I’m lazy please do it for me 😇
Can confirm, rune bear is killed and still able to summon. Seems like a different summon area entirely really, just for that tunnel.
You’re probably right ngl
Maybe use the jolan ash
The gold ring that gives you more souls.
The Stone Crusher that is easily missed.
The two headed dragon boss.
The Gold mask set
The Lazure set and that other wizard guys set
Those are just some examples.
Gold ring?
Areas
The massive underworld areas can be easily missed. This goes hand in hand with the lategame section in southwest Liurnia up on the plateau.
The Subeterannen Shunning grounds have an entrance that is rather obvious in the endgame, but is actually available much earlier in the game.
The Consecrated Snowfield and Halligtree can also be missed, since the access isn't that obvious.
Once you get the ability to see what collectibles you've missed, you're able to see on a per area scale what's missing and where on the World Map screen.
However I just learned while playing the DLC that you can hit Select (on controller on Steam) when you're on foot inside a sub-area and you get a breakdown for that specific area. This is super helpful for narrowing down where the missing stuff is. You also learn the name of the sub-area.
Wish I knew about this sooner!
Didn't know this thank you!
I was wondering something. I had been told some items are very well hidden behind parkouring and all.
However everytime I see an opportunity to parkour somewhere secret looking it always ends up being an unintended out of bounds area. Are items really that well hidden? Or are the ones that are hidden just way more in the open?
Most hidden items are typically just hidden in out of the way areas or in dungeons but there are a few that you have to parkour for such as the claw talisman in Stormveil Castle or the various items in Raya Lucaria.
How do I reveal hidden paths?
Press X six times, then down, left, down, left
Hit it with your weapon
Are they real or just stuff of legends?
I'm 40 hours in and have yet to find one.
Yeah, I've found a few. Don't want to spoil to much, but let's just say there's several in Raya Lucaria Academy.
Ahh, I've been finishing up limgrave, mistwood, and weeping peninsula. Guess I should progress the "main story" a bit
Yeah there is a cave with loads of spooky skeletons and it has about four of them - hides two bosses behind them too
Where is that at? North after stormveil castle? I don't want exact location so I may chance upon it
Yeah will be past the academy and all the lakes - Sages cave I think it is called
Got hidden walls and two bosses (both are really strong)
I just did a Catacomb that had 5 illusory walls alone lol
A good few maybe around a dozen.
Hidden paths are usually found in lore-relevant places. Anywhere that's populated by mages or summoners tends to have one or two.
What are the best and or your favorite secret or hidden game locations that aren't easily found. Kind of like the hidden dragon beach in DS1 (it doesn't have to be anything like that I just love DS)
There's a secret tower through a dungeon at the highest point of Raya Lucaria with a great view
That one cave with the blue dancer charm.
I have over 300 hrs and still haven't gone there lmao
The Church (not Cathedral) of Dragon Communion
Just kinda vibing out there on it's island luring unsuspecting noobs to their watery graves before they figure out you have to go through a cave to reach it.
Neat place for sightseeing too, looking at the mainland from the island at night. It was one of the first times I realized how beautiful ER is, once I got to that island and started soaking it in.
I like deep-root depths, going into elden ring for the first time I'd spent months watching content for it on YouTube and whatnot beforehand cuz I didn't get a PC until recently, but somehow I had never come across deep-root depths in all the content I saw so I was so surprised to find an area I hadn't even heard of
I'm planing on playing elden ring blind , but I'm afraid to miss some content of the game because it's hidden such as hidden bridge that i found somewhere on yt
like. is there anywhere to know it's there (like an item hint or map hint) or it's just a hidden path with no clue to find except you accidentally found it
You will never find some things without consulting a Wiki or a YouTube video. There is a cave in Caelid with a hidden entrance. What are you expected to do? Hit every section of the cliff wall in case there might be a hidden entrance?
Last night I was in the Zamor Ruins and got a spell but missed the underground entrance to get the bell bearing. Now I have to go back there.
While I do agree with the general statement for that first example a npc (Sellen) gives you a major hint to go to nearby merchants in Caelid with one of those merchants selling a note detailing where that cave entrance is.
I did not know there was a note. I usually don't buy the merchant's info items.
In game there are strong hints to secrets in game.
Where they are varies, but it's usually:
Don't discount these avenues. If you treat the game like it has secrets and try to find them, then you'll find them. But you won't find ALL of them.
Thus, you have more content for subsequent playthroughs.
Read item descriptions, especially key items.
Buy the notes from merchants.
Read player messages.
I played blind first run and I think I got like...90% of the content, areas and npc quests without issue. And that was before they started marking NPC locations on the map.
I think it’s really simple. Resist the urge to look up anything and play the game totally blind from here on out and when you finish the game you will think to yourself “wow I wish there was more Elden Ring”. Then look online and see everything you missed and you get more Elden Ring.
I'm on NG+3 with over 300 hours and I'm still finding new things. This game is nuts amd I love it.
I watched videos and found nearly everything first play through and I regret it, lots of wasted time tracking down some weapon or talisman that I don’t ever use when I could have been getting gud. Do yourself a favor, just play it and don’t worry. Plenty of sick items to go around, if you really really need something specific watch fightin cowboy or get someone to drop it for you. I have so many S tier weapons that just languish in my chest, and for what?
