How to Find Silver in Subnautica

TL;DR

  • Look for sandstone outcrops in the Kelp Forest and Grassy Plateaus.
  • Check Reefback Leviathans for barnacles that can contain silver.

Sandstone Outcrops

Silver is primarily found in sandstone outcrops. These outcrops are commonly located in several biomes, including the Kelp Forest and Grassy Plateaus [1:9], [2:3]. Players have noted that these areas are rich in sandstone deposits, which can yield silver along with gold and lead [4:2]. The Grassy Plateaus, in particular, have been highlighted as a good location for finding these outcrops [1:5].

Reefback Leviathans

Another source of silver is the barnacles on the backs of Reefback Leviathans. These large creatures can be found roaming various parts of the ocean, and their barnacles can be broken open to potentially yield silver or copper [1:2], [4:1]. Be cautious, as some Reefbacks may have Tiger Plants on their backs, which can be hazardous [1:2].

Exploration Tips

When searching for silver, it's helpful to explore the borders between different biomes, such as where the Kelp Forest meets the Grassy Plateaus [4:2]. This can increase your chances of finding sandstone outcrops. Additionally, while limestone outcrops are more common, they do not contain silver, so focus your efforts on identifying sandstone formations [2:5].

Additional Considerations

While exploring, remember that silver is less common than other resources like copper, so patience is key [2:2]. Also, consider using tools like the propulsion cannon to manage any threats from aggressive flora or fauna you might encounter during your search [1:6].

ORIGINAL POST

I really struggle finding silver, is there anywhere that you guys would suggest looking for it? I am in the relatively early game and can only 200m down.

You can actually find silver on Reefbacks. Just look for the bright blue spots on its back (you will receive the prompt to 'break barnacle,' and you will either get copper or silver from it. Just be aware that some Reefbacks can also have Tiger Plants on their backs.

Woah nice, can’t you use a propulsion cannon to get rid of tiger plants?

3 upvotes on reddit
[deleted] · 6 years ago

I haven't tried a propulsion cannon, but you can try to knife it away. You'd take a bit of damage doing it, but it will get rid of the plant (it's not worth it to plant their seeds, the Tiger Plants will actually damage your base).

Red Grass areas have easy to find sandstone. You can also find it in some of the areas of the Kelp if you're near one of the deeper areas. You can find it on the high walls around a mushroom forest -- if you've found one of those you've ranged pretty far.

Sandstone outcrops in the kelp forest, grassy plains, and caves in the safe shallows. Also the large blue barnacles on top of Reefback leviathans.

Lol, I haven't noticed it. Probably it was drilled before. No naturally occurring rare metals in OG Subnautica, besides big deposits.

Question in title. New player and I’ve hit a road block that requires silver. I found one piece in a cave but am unsure as to where to find more as no other rocks seem to be dropping any. Thank you for your time

Find the border between the grassy plateaus and the kelp forest and on the border(the kelp forest is kinda taller so youll see like a elevated area then a drop into the grassy plateaus) youll see tons of outcrops of sandstone

On those weirdly shaped platforms in the grassy plateaus youll see sandstone outcrops on the side of it

Sandstone can contain gold, silver or lead, each one have a about 33% chance of dropping ,so you wont allways get silver, but lead and gold is very useful

Btw, limestone outcrops look like very rough rocks that a pretty wide, and they contain titanium and copper, while sandstone ones look like neat little balls of stone and the drop silver gold and lead

Poketom2362 · OP · 4 years ago

I know roughly what the kelp forest is, where are the grassy plateaus?

Edit: never mind I found it

Don’t forget that the barnacles on the backs of Reefbacks also can contain silver. All the more reason to hunt them down and trap them in cages befriend them and ask them for their silver.

Silver will spawn with cobalt or gold, iirc. If you find cobalt or gold, silver might be nearby, though you are also likely to find gold + iron or cobalt + iron + nickel + silicon

Just keep searching using a Large Grid Ore Detector, looking for "ore spots". You can find them under ice, like in the image, but also under normal terrain with white-yellowish spots

Got a drill? Plenty of silver hunks in the dunes and at the bottom of the underwater islands. I think there's also one not that far off the shore of spoiler mountain?

If not, start looking for reefbacks.

No drill, just started my run two days ago and need one silver for habitat builder, I’ll have a nose around the under water islands. I’m too much of a pu*** to go and kill a leviathan so I’d rather just get it from the sandstone.

Cheers anyway

Creepvine (kelp) forests, grassy plateaus (that's the red bits), and (carefully!) down around the thermal vents and in various deep little caves in the safe shallows. Plateaus are probably safest/easiest, although keep an eye out for some aggressive weeds. :)

Not sure how early you’re able to go here but sea traders dig up shale with every step, making it nearly infinite shale. Reef-backs also have barnacles on their back that contain either silver or copper

It’s west/southwest from the center of the map. I’d suggest bringing along a beacon so you can keep track of it. I used a biome map to help me when I played through and it was more than helpful, would you like me to link it?

how to find silver in subnautica

Key Considerations for Finding Silver in Subnautica:

  1. Biomes to Explore:

    • Grassy Plateaus: Silver can often be found in this biome, especially near the edges.
    • Red Grass Fields: Look for outcrops and deposits in this area.
    • Kelp Forests: Search around the base of kelp plants and in the sandy areas.
  2. Mining Outcrops:

    • Silver is primarily found in Sandstone Outcrops. When you break these outcrops, you have a chance to obtain silver ore.
    • Use your survival knife or a scanner to break the outcrops.
  3. Depth Considerations:

    • Silver ore is typically found at depths between 50 to 200 meters. Make sure you have the appropriate equipment to explore these depths safely.
  4. Tools:

    • Consider crafting a Scanner to help identify resources and outcrops more efficiently.
    • A Seaglide can help you navigate quickly through the water, making it easier to explore and gather resources.
  5. Inventory Management:

    • Ensure you have enough inventory space before heading out to collect silver, as you may come across other valuable resources as well.

Recommendation: Focus your exploration on the Grassy Plateaus and Kelp Forests during your dives. Equip yourself with a Seaglide for faster movement and keep an eye out for Sandstone Outcrops to maximize your chances of finding silver. Happy diving!
