What Redditors are Saying

How to Get a Free Upgrade in a Hotel

TL;DR Be polite, book directly with the hotel, join loyalty programs, and ask nicely. Avoid third-party bookings.

Politeness and Courtesy

Being nice to the front desk staff is frequently mentioned as an effective way to increase your chances of getting a free upgrade [2:1][3:4]. Offering small tokens of appreciation, like a candy bar, can also help [2:1]. Remember, hotel staff deal with many entitled guests, so showing genuine kindness can make you stand out [5:3].

Booking Directly

Booking directly with the hotel rather than through third-party sites is crucial for potential upgrades [3:2][5:4]. Third-party reservations often have restrictions that prevent changes or upgrades [3:7]. Booking directly ensures your reservation is more valuable to the hotel, which may make them more willing to offer upgrades [3:9].

Loyalty Programs and Status

Joining the hotel's loyalty program can significantly enhance your chances of receiving an upgrade [2:2][2:3]. Hotels often prioritize upgrades for members of their reward systems [5:5]. Even if you're not a frequent traveler, signing up for these programs is usually free and can be beneficial [5:4].

Timing and Availability

Choosing the right time to ask for an upgrade can make a difference. Upgrades are more likely during weekdays when hotels are less busy [3:1][5:4]. If you're staying during a special occasion, mention it at check-in or add it to your reservation notes [5:4]. However, avoid making exaggerated claims about special occasions, as this tactic is overused [1:7].

Negotiation and Upsell Opportunities

Some hotels offer commission-based upsells, meaning the price for an upgrade can be negotiable [5:1]. Asking about upgrade costs upon check-in can lead to a better deal, especially on slower days [5:1]. While tipping is generally not accepted for upgrades, being aware of upsell programs can provide opportunities for negotiation [5:5].

Considerations Beyond the Discussions

While these strategies can improve your chances, it's essential to manage expectations. Not all hotels will have availability for upgrades, and sometimes paying for the room you want initially might be the best option [5:6].

Just curious if you have ever asked for a free upgrade at a hotel and were ever given one? Kind of just want to ask for exposure therapy but am just wondering if anyone has succeeding in asking?

It never hurts to ask! If it’s available I like to give them out if asked, especially to members.

If we’re asked over the phone or online chat, we’re supposed to check the date the reservation was created to make sure they didn’t JUST book and try to game the system for an upgrade.

We normally just don’t like when you expect or feel entitled to an upgrade for whatever reason. The kinds of rooms we’d be upgrading you too are usually limited and sell out quickly, so you should never expect one to be available.

Some places might offer an upgrade at a discount, also.

yeah, but its a game I just don't like playing...maybe its me but if I get stuck somewhere because a flight got canceled or I am going to NYC for the weekend or any other situation where I literally need a place to sleep, if you want to upgrade me great but in either case I am not really going to "use the room". But if were going to the beach and you know ahead of time that your going to spend a lot of time in the hotel room and using the hotel amenities a lot, it just makes sense to book the larger room or book the package that includes access to all facilities and not just book what is ever cheap and hope you can sweet talk your way into something better. Maybe I am just jaded from my years and years of retail work but I can always spot that family with the penny pincher parent who found a "deal" and they really saved $50 on the room to just spend $50 on the breakfast that was otherwise included on the standard package. Maybe its just me but I don't live on hope for upgrades

Yeah I’d definitely suggest actually booking what you need at a minimum, but if you book for a vacation there definitely isn’t any harm in asking in the off chance you might get something better than you’d hoped for. If I just need a clean bed and toilet because I’m stranded for a night, I just wouldn’t ask for an upgrade.

If we have the rooms available, you book through the hotel directly and you're nice to us. Most likely, we'll give you a free upgrade.

I did online check in, digital key, entered my room and was not happy with the view. I had booked the trip as a special celebratory getaway for myself and had a different view in mind.

I went downstairs and as nicely as I could, explained I'd stayed there previously and loved my view, and this time I was there for XYZ and would love it if they had a better view available.

They not only gave me a room with an awesome view, but 10min later came to my room with balloons and a small hospitality gift to commemorate my "celebration".

Our policy is to give it only to those who don't ask. And if you ask for special treatment, like "It's my birthday"... expect a card printed from our laser printer. Everyone writes that it's their birthday, anniversary, honeymoon, babymoon, graduation, anniversary of their first date, etc etc etc etc.

And if you book 3rd party, you are almost guaranteed to get exactly what you booked and nothing more. We don't want to hear a complaint that you didn't get the room you paid for.

Yeah I learned my lesson hardcore when we booked a hotel in the Philippines on a OTA because they had a stay 3 nights get one night free deal which of course did not include breakfast...we spent more money on food that trip then we saved and the posted walk in rate was almost what we paid. booking directly from now on

I always assume they'll think that I feel entitled to it just for asking and therefore not give it to me, so I've never asked. I've been offered a few cool free upgrades at some cool spots like Amsterdam Manor in Aruba and last month at an overnight at a Hyatt Regency in Taipei, but probably because we're "Discoverers" in their ranking system. I think I'm not bold enough to ask. Perhaps I should try it sometime. Good post question.

things that can help

  1. being part of the reward program
  2. making your reservation through the hotel or hotel affiliate (IHG, Hilton, Marriott) going through a third party almost always will prevent you from being upgraded
  3. day of the week, length of stay, time of year
  4. be polite and ask the worst we can say is we are unable to do it

  1. always book direct. If you book on Expedia, Hotwire, booking, etc you won’t get a comp upgrade since your res is worth less to the hotel
  2. never hurts to be super kind to the front desk checking you in. They have a lot of flexibility when assigning your room and usually upgrading 1-2 categories is allowed to balance the house

It's not really a "reservation is worth less to the hotel" thing. I work at a hotel and we cannot make any changes to a third party reservation.

Basically, the third party has entered in to a contract with the hotel based on what the guest booked. It's a very specific contact for this particular day for this particular price for this particular room type. If we at the hotel make any changes to what has been booked, then that contact can be voided and the third party dies not have to pay. Sometimes emergencies happen and we have to change the room, and usually the third party isn't paying enough attention to notice it, but I have seen it happen.

I work in revenue management for hotels, this is not entirely true. We have agreements with 3rd parties who take their commission before delivering the reservation to our system, direct connect. If the OTA is taking their margin and delivering the reservation than they’ve already been paid and you can change the room type as you wish. Booking usually delivers a commission bill at month end, depending on your brand, so you shouldn’t be moving the reservation. The hotel should never change the dates of the reservation but they can upgrade the room type. OTA reservations should be the ones you try to upsell first

Be very friendly and ask nicely, and if you know the room number you're asking for, or even the side of the hotel, even better. When I know I will be staying at the same place on multiple occasions for work, I always note where the larger rooms are and the better views. The next time I check in I ask for 'any room that ends in 23. I loved 823 last time I was here', or whatever. Definitely easier for them to give it to you if your request is specific.

What is best way to ask for free room upgrade?

Posted by moneypennyrandomnumb · in r/Hospitality · 3 years ago

We will be staying at an upscale hotel in Hawaii and the room type we reserved is facing the street. They have the same size/layout rooms that face the mountains. If possible, I would like to get a Mountain View room if there are available ones when we check in. Is there a good way to go about asking for this? Otherwise, I would just say “Is it possible for us to get a room with a view?” When I check in—but not sure if there is a “secret” to getting upgrades like this. (We don’t have any rewards or anything with this hotel.)

It never hurts to ask! However, in my experience, these rooms typically cost a lot more per night and unless they just had a lot of vacancy, would likely not upgrade.

Complain!!! I hate to say it but that is the best way to receive an upgrade for free if you are at a high-end/luxury resort. Asking politely will come with an upcharge. It is cheaper for them to comp an upgrade than to deal with a bad review on Yelp, TripAdvisor etc.

Why do you think rich people continuously complain about things and ask for managers? Because they get free shit. I’ve watched it work, and the more dramatic (within reason) you are the better it works: “This room has ruined my vacation and I’m paying xyz for this rate, this is rediculous!” Don’t make a scene, keep your voice down and don’t be inappropriate by swearing or insulting anyone. If it’s a line of luxury hotels: “I’ve stayed at a number of (insert name brand) hotels and have never been given such poor treatment or brushed aside like this, I’ll never stay at (insert name brand) again!”

If they are at capacity then you are SOL, but they’ll probably give you a discount or voucher for their amenities at least.

I know it’s not easy to flip a switch and turn into a “Karen”, but in the right circumstances it really works.

Best way to get room upgrade?

  1. Make sure you’re not staying on a busy night, during an event, or on a weekend in a busy area. An off night, like a weekday would make an upgrade more likely.
  2. Book direct with the hotel. Do NOT use a third party booking site.
  3. If it’s for a special occasion, put that in the reservation notes.
  4. Never hurts to call and ask what their policy is on upgrades.
  5. Hotel loyalty programs are free. If you travel a decent bit, it would be in your best interest to sign up. Good luck!

As a front desk agent I agree 100%, would also like to add that many hotels have commission based upsells. When you check in, you might be offered to upgrade for an additional $x per night (at my hotel the first tier starts at 25). But no one tells you is that it’s negotiable; since it’s commission based we are encouraged to “not lose the upsell”. So if I offer someone 25 and they say no I’ll offer 15 on slower days, since some extra money is better than none. Basically just ask upon checkin how much it would be to upgrade, and whatever price you’re given politely ask if they’d be willing to do whatever $x you have in mind. You can also ask if there is a way to bundle a parking or meal add-on which genuinely saves you a lot. The key and I cannot stress this enough is just to be nice!! You’d be surprised what you can get just by being friendly, I’ve def given free upgrades every now and then to people who aren’t at the “eligible status” just for genuinely being a kind person.

1 upvotes on reddit
zib1201 · 2 years ago

And of course this only applies to my specific property, not every hotel participates in the upsell program. An option of last resort is if you’ve been seriously inconvenienced, e.g. maintenance problems in your room & you need to switch, that can be an opportunity to politely inquire about an upgrade. Once again stressing the importance of politeness - sure you could be a dick and demand an upgrade for the inconvenience, you’d probably get that (and nothing more) and have a bad rep at the front desk. Versus when someone has clearly had a hard time but being patient and kind, we’ll be way more sympathetic and really want to help you. then if anything more comes up you know your friends at the front desk have your back! Again just speaking from personal experience, sorry for the rambling i just wish more people knew how a little kindness can go a long way in this industry.

I usually book a middle range room, ask on check-in if there are upgrades avail. If avail, I’ll take one and they often do an extra upgrade for free. One thing that has been mentionned by others: be super nice! The amount of wasted/arrogant/entitled/meam people hotel people meet on a daily basis is insane. Just being a proper human being with consideration for others can do wonders. If it does not get you anything, it might cheer up someone having a bad day!

I have had this happen 3 times. One way is if you have a friend that works for a hotel anywhere they might be connected to Vegas ones. My friend worked at a Hilton in Orlando and so he was able to help with getting a deal.

Another way is, before your trip, you might be able to find a time share offer. If you sign up to go to the meeting while booking your trip, they normally give you a huge discount on the room, but don’t miss the meeting or you pay full price. As long as you don’t sign anything it’ll be a huge free discount.

A third way is the complain about anything that is actually an issue with the room. One time in Atlantic City, our room wasn’t ready and we complained that we had to wait and they gave us a way bigger room and a free bottle of champagne.

Honestly, just be friendly. When they ask for your CC just try slipping a $50 (while letting the 50 show at the bottom) under it as you hand it over and ask “are there any upgrades available today?” A friend of mine also does the same but keeps the bill in his hand and shows the number. They’ll understand exactly what you mean, and if they can accommodate they will. If not they’ll just let you know there aren’t any available. No harm no foul

Upgrade success 🥳

Posted by Technical-Song5427 · in r/Hilton · 6 months ago

The last couple of times I’ve stayed at Hilton’s I’ve messaged the front desk via the app about 1-2 weeks before and I’ve been successful getting a very nice upgrade on both occasions.

These were both UK in a DoubleTree and “Hilton” Hilton.

For the first one, I booked the cheapest room possible for 2 nights and got upgraded to a Jr Suite.

The the latest one, I also booked the cheapest room but for 3 nights and they’ve been able to upgrade me to a full Suite 🥳

Just be really polite, ask how their day was and they might just return the kindness to you!

I’m Gold and stay in Hilton’s 4/5 times a year.

I wish you all success too 🤞

I'm Gold thanks to the AMEX surpass card, Back in Fall 2024 (Mid-September to Mid-October), I took a vacation to London and stayed in the Doubletree Hyde Park (2nd time there after September 2022) and originally booked a Queen Room for 28 nights.

Upon checking in, I was pleasantly surprised to get upgraded to a King Suite room with a Park view.

That upgrade was completely unexpected as I hear the hotels don't usually upgrade you if you have a long stay.

The only hint I gave them at all about asking for any upgrades was in my special requests, when I asked to be put in my previous Queen room that I stayed in from 2 years prior if that particular room was still available and I didn't get any Gold Upgrades.

So, maybe that extra request to get upgraded worked, or maybe it was just coincidence that they were going to upgrade me anyway.

Upgrade Priority

Posted by Blastedcleansedcrave · in r/Hilton · 4 months ago

So Hilton offers space available upgrades to Gold and Diamond members, and status obviously affects ones upgrade outcome. Marriott purportedly has an algorithm that assigns priority for its elite guests to receive upgrades, does something similar exist for Hilton properties? Or do front desk staff have more discretion over how upgrades are distributed to elite guests?

Not all Hilton Hotels are on the auto upgrade program. Even the ones that are have some discretion.

Hiltons auto upgrade is pretty cool since it tends to generate more $$ for the hotel. For the three nights prior to a stay it's looking at demand for each room and profiling a stay against all other stays.

A stay may have upgrade opportunity for the first night, but not on the second night. That disqualifies the reservation. If there's solid potential for the stay, it adds you to an upgrade list.

The upgrade prioritizes based on tier and total spend. Say two diamond members have the same room type but one paid BAR and the other paid a discounted rate, the BAR reservation gets priority.

Upgrades start at the top of the house and, if the algorithm doesn't think the room above it will be sold within a guardrail, the upgrade is yielded. That naturally opens another room for an upgrade that works it's way down the chain.

Some hotels have lots of upgrade paths, others practically none so the real opportunity is at bigger brands/locationa or unique hotels.

The end result is the lower price rooms become available and those tend to sell more/faster closer to a particular night.

Each hotel can set guardrails or availability. Moving from one room type up a level typically doesn't change the variable cost to turn a room (house keeping and consumables). That isn't true of big suites though.

TLDR - Upgrade priority is honors tier, spend on stay, history at hotel. Still - be nice or at least don't be a dick and the front desk may hook you up still.

I'm just curious, if an upgrade is available do you upgrade only when asked. We stopped asking for an upgrade because we never get one. And I recently found out that some places don't even have upgrades. I guess all the rooms are pretty much identical. In any case, I'm wondering if we don't ask then we are guaranteed not getting one or is it still possible. It just feels awkward asking for one every time and watching them stare at the screen, tap at the keyboard, stare some more, maybe tap some more, but ultimately hear the canned reply... I'm sorry, we don't have any upgrades available at this time. It makes me want to see that screen. I'm thinking there's a big banner that pops up and says "Never ever upgrade this couple!" And we are super nice to the front desk, regardless.

I tend to pick a room to get the best room available at the time then message to ask if upgrades are available on the app or check front desk at checkin.

This is one area Hilton could clarify better on both sides - customer expectation setting and hotel operations.

My understanding as a Bonvoy Titanium and Lifetime Plat is that the Marriott corporate algo is for the Nightly Upgrade Awards (NUAs) that are for upgrades to premium rooms and suites, one award per night; NUAs are the default benefit (there are other options) for qualifying Plats (5 NUAs) and Titanium (additional 5).

The properties themselves are also free to upgrade the guest. I’ve been upgraded by the hotels (on more than one occasion) to Junior Suites when my NUAs failed to clear and also when I did not redeem NUAs.

It’s not uncommon for a member to fail to use up his/her NUAs before their one calendar year expiry. Anecdotally, it’s not unusual for members to claim that they’ve never been able to redeem their NUAs.

How the algo for the Bonvoy NUA works is a matter of much speculation.

Every hotel brand upgrades based on discretion. Nowadays it all comes down to whoever stands at reception and whether they like your face or race. I always choose carefully who I approach behind the desk as you can often see in one's face whether they are nice or simply standing there to boost their miserable existence.

Back to topic; Hilton has certain hotels which always upgrade their Gold and Diamond members to Executive level with lounge access. One of such hotels is Hilton London Bridge in London. Their Gold and Diamond members will always be placed on the executive floor and in the lounge which is nice because you get to meet your fellow tier members, in an exclusive setting. It isn't a luxury hotel per se so that kinda sucks.

Other hotels are more reluctant to do this and gatekeep their lounge as if they serve something worth talking about and refuse upgrades even if the hotel is empty. Marriott is in my experience the most greedy of all brands and barely ever gives you an upgrade at all. At a Marriott in Bangkok, I once was refused an upgrade so I challenged them on it. After a whole lot of unnecessary debates going back and forth, they upgraded me to the next category room which was the executive room WITH lounge access as per the description on their website/app. I was gobsmacked when they wrote on the confirmation paper that I opted out of longe access and wanted me to sign for it! I refused and this again turned into a lot of back and forth until they ran stuck and gave me the lounge access that came with the room. It's a brand that I would strongly advise anyone to spend their money on to grow with because it would be in vain. At least Hilton gives free breakfast as standard.

I stay approximately 200 nights in Marriott properties and 50 nights in Hilton properties a year. I earn Dimond through stays at Hilton.

I get upgraded to a suite at Marriott properties about 98% of the time. That’s all levels of properties and it happens to me almost always. I always check the app the day of check in to see if there are suites available and I ask. I don’t count a property in my status if there are no suites that I can see in the app. Let me preface by saying I book last minute and most of the time my reservations are 1 night. So it’s easier to get an upgrade.

Your one bad experience at one specific hotel doesn’t negate that the overall consensus in both the Hilton and Marriott reddit groups are that Marriott gives out a ton more upgrades than Hilton. However I have to say Hilton is upgrading me more and now even a couple times I am getting upgraded in advance. Was upgraded to a one bedroom suite at a DoubleTree this evening.

Agreed! With Hilton, Single night stays are mostly when I get upgraded. I also have to call or ask at check-in. If I do on-line check-in, it won't happen unless I go to the front desk when I arrive and talk to a human

That’s really cool that certain hotels have upgraded rooms designated for gold & Diamond members.

For Hilton I recall a post on here stating that the “room upgrade” is really a hidden $20 voucher towards an upgrade. You know how you can pay a bit extra per night to get a better room? That’s where the $20 gets applied to.

As far as who gets upgraded, it’s up to the hotel itself. I’ve seen posts on here mention there are so many gold and diamond members (especially because of the credit card) that they can’t upgrade everyone. What ends up happening is they can upgrade a few members per night and usually upon request.

I believe that only applies to the auto upgrade. Above that (say, for a suite) it is more elastic.

Yes, Hilton has similar software that automatically upgrades people. We use it at my hotel and I’ve received auto upgrades when traveling to other hotels.

How to get a free upgrade in a hotel

Here are some key considerations for securing a free hotel upgrade:

  1. Join Loyalty Programs: Sign up for the hotel’s loyalty program. Members often receive complimentary upgrades as a perk.

  2. Book Directly: Always book directly through the hotel’s website or app rather than third-party sites. Hotels prefer direct bookings and may offer upgrades as a thank you.

  3. Travel During Off-Peak Times: If you travel during less busy times (like weekdays or off-seasons), hotels may have more availability for upgrades.

  4. Ask Politely at Check-In: A friendly request at check-in can go a long way. Politely ask if any upgrades are available, and express excitement about your stay.

  5. Special Occasions: Mention if you’re celebrating a special occasion (like a birthday or anniversary). Hotels often like to make these moments memorable.

  6. Be Flexible: If you’re willing to accept a different room type or location, you may increase your chances of getting an upgrade.

  7. Dress the Part: While it’s not a guarantee, dressing nicely can create a positive impression and may influence the staff’s decision.

Recommendation: Always be courteous and respectful when asking for an upgrade. A positive attitude can significantly enhance your chances of receiving one. Remember, upgrades are not guaranteed, but these strategies can improve your odds!
