What Redditors are Saying

How to Get the Best Hotel Deals

TL;DR

  • Book directly with hotels for best rates and flexibility.
  • Use loyalty programs and travel advisors for perks.
  • Consider last-minute booking sites for spontaneous trips.

Direct Booking and Loyalty Programs

Booking directly through the hotel often guarantees the best rates and offers greater flexibility if plans change. Many hotel chains have a "best rate guarantee" policy, where they will match or beat any lower price you find [2:1]. Additionally, booking directly usually allows you to earn loyalty points, which can be redeemed for free nights or discounts on future stays [2:4][2:9]. Using platforms like Gondola.ai can also help you book directly while taking advantage of AAA rates and earning cashback [2:2].

Travel Advisors and Specialized Sites

For luxury hotels, using a travel advisor can provide access to exclusive deals and perks such as room upgrades and free breakfasts [1:3]. Websites like Secret Escapes offer discounted rates on upscale accommodations [1:2]. For more general hotel bookings, sites like Expedia and Agoda can sometimes offer competitive pricing, especially when sorted by price [3:3].

Last-Minute Deals and Apps

If you're open to booking last-minute, websites like Lastminute.com, HotelTonight, and Hotwire can offer significant savings on unsold rooms [1:4]. These sites are particularly useful for spontaneous travelers looking to snag a deal at the eleventh hour. Additionally, using apps that offer special promotions or double points can further reduce costs [4:1].

Timing and Flexibility

The timing of your booking can greatly impact the price. Booking early generally provides peace of mind and potentially better rates, but waiting until closer to your travel date can sometimes yield discounts if hotels have excess inventory [4:4]. It's advisable to make a cancelable reservation and then monitor prices, rebooking if a better rate becomes available [3:1].

Alternative Strategies

Some users suggest unconventional methods like using corporate discount codes found online [5:1], though this carries risk if verification is required. Others recommend checking for local university or AAA discounts, which can be surprisingly effective [2:5]. Lastly, leveraging credit card points or status from frequent travel can lead to substantial savings [4:5].

Are there any sites good for finding deals on 4 to 5 star hotels?

Just use a travel advisor. We get inundated with deals for luxury hotels and those hotels almost always include perks like free breakfast, property credits, room upgrades, etc.

Are you trying to book last minute or far out in advance? For last minute bookings, I'd recommend lastminute.com, hoteltonight.com, and hotwire.com (specifically Hotwire's hot rate deals). If booking further out in advance it's a little hard to find a great deal, but every now and then I've found some incredible pricing on 5-star hotels on agoda.com.

I like the flexibility that booking directly provides, but I do it through gondola.ai instead of the hotel website. I find that this is the easiest way for me to find good deals and still use AAA rates. Gondola books directly so it shows up in my Hyatt app like normal and I still get the flexibility and the hotel loyalty points, plus the site gives 3% back.

I recently did the math and that plus my credit card points means I end up getting like 18% of my room rate back on my bookings; I’m yet to find a better deal.

Edit: clarity

Just book directly through the hotels. Get a AAA card. Ask if they have discounts for a nearby local university, which you are somehow a graduate of despite never having studied there.

For the love of all that is holy, stay tf away from third party sites. They'll take your money, deliver the shittiest service they can, then blame the hotel for their mismanagement when things go poorly for you.

Also, American Express Preferred Hotels and Resorts uses Expedia to book their rooms. Avoid like the gd plague, unless you enjoy dealing with TWO separate third party systems.

Seconded on the AAA card. Most hotels will give you 10% off, so the card will pay for itself very quickly. Plus some restaurants will give a discount as well.

Always, always, always book direct!

I spend a lot of time in hotels, and yet two times I fucked up when booking the date for my mom. Both times the hotel has shifted things for me, and it's only because I had booked direct. Third party sites will, as this commenter said, do a shit job for any problems (no matter whose fault it is). Plus you get points, and that means cheaper because you can use those for free days.

Yep, not much the hotel can do if you use a third party and something goes wrong. To save the extra buck, it's just not worth the chance. Heck even start working at one and get the 50% off or whatever the hotel chain would give you.

Please do not use third-party sites. If you need to cancel, change dates, change your room type, etc. the hotel can't help you. If there is an issue, we have no real easy way to compensate you.

Third parties consistently lie to guests about amenities, pet friendly status, incidentals, and who actually has your money (Answer: The Third Party). We get a Virtual Credit Card from the 3rd party. We don't have your money. If the VCC declines (which happens rather often), we can't check you in.

99.9% of 3rd party bookings are non-refundable. The third party will tell you the hotel can cancel for free without penalty and that it is the hotel's policy. It is not. It is the 3rd party's policy. They will call the hotel and try to get us to cancel without penalty for our "mutual guest" but they do that to benefit themselves so they don't have to pay the cancelation AND refund you.

When it comes to blocking rooms, you are last on assignments, which means you are more likely to get a room near a loud elevator, noisy ice machine, or outside generator/air conditioning unit. If a hotel has to walk people because they are overbooked, you're the 1st on the chopping block.

If you have preferences like a connecting room or lack thereof, there is a good chance that won't get communicated. You may book a regular room, but it may come to us as a handicapped room, since those are the room types that tend to be blocked last.

If you are a member of a hotel rewards program and you book via a 3rd party, you don't get the points.

I’ve been able to cancel and refund hotels from third party sites the few times i had to. It usually says whether or not the booking is refundable when you book it. I’m sure they gouge prices though

I would never book through a site unless it’s the hotel’s own site.

If something goes wrong at the hotel I’m staying at, there are so many more ways the hotel. An accommodate me than a 3rd party booking place ever could.

If I have to cut my stay short, most hotels will help you out and not keep the full amount due on the room.

Booking through the hotel as a member with that hotel chain. Most, if not all hotels have a policy that their members get the best rate guaranteed. If you find a better rate you can submit it to corporate (google for example Hilton best rate guarantee) and they will give you an even better one for the mistake.

I always book directly with the hotel. When you book, make sure the reservation is cancelable and avoid prepaying. Then, a couple of weeks before your trip, start checking the hotel's website daily and rebook if you find a lower rate. I've booked/cancelled/rebooked several times for the same trip before, and it's saved over $100 per night in some cases - most recently, I saved $50 per night on an upcoming trip.

I mean there's somewhere specific I wanna go, but this trip would be my first time leaving town in year to celebrate my 21st. So I don't have to ton of experience with this, the hotel I'm really looking at tends to be around 130 a night, but before I make a reservation I'm curious if there a time I should be waiting for or something

Is it a popular place? Sometimes you get lucky booking directly with the hotel at the last minute if they have a lot of rooms left. But if it's going to book, you're going to get a better deal booking sooner than later.

Usually the closer you get to the date, the more it will go up...if there is a demand. If they have a lot of empty rooms a week before, then the price will go down.

Always book direct!

You can always make a reservation that you can cancel (make sure of the cancellation policy!) now, then if the price goes down, either call and see if they will match it, or cancel the first reservation and make another.

I use points that I earn on my credit card, but probably not an option for you. Ask your parents if they have points they will give you, or other people, especially those that travel a lot.

Apps, using special offers for double the amount of points for using a certain hotel, and using the same app repeatedly with each stay to boost your account level, which increases your points in the end. Then redeeming the points for a certain amount of cash off for the hotel stay. I personally use Expedia. No complaints from the app.

What is the best way to get the best deals on hotel booking?

Posted by Intelligent_Tune_392 · in r/bookinghotel · 4 months ago

As someone who travels quite frequently for both work and leisure, I’ve learned a lot through trial and error when it comes to hotel booking. Getting a great deal isn’t just about finding the cheapest price — it's about getting value for your money. Here are some detailed tips and personal experiences that might help you:

1. Use Multiple Hotel Booking Platforms

I always start by comparing prices on a few different websites like Booking (dot) com, Agoda, Hotels (dot) com, and Expedia. Sometimes one will have a flash sale or a promo that the others don’t. I also check Google Hotels, which aggregates listings from many sources in one place.

2. Leverage Loyalty Programs

If you travel often, signing up for hotel loyalty programs can be very rewarding. For instance, Marriott Bonvoy, Hilton Honors, or even Hotels (dot) com Rewards offer points that eventually earn you free nights. I’ve saved several hundred dollars just by staying consistent with one or two hotel chains.

3. Don’t Book Too Early or Too Late

There’s a sweet spot when it comes to booking. I’ve found that booking around 3-4 weeks in advance often yields the best rates, especially for mid-range hotels. Booking too early can actually be more expensive because prices haven't adjusted yet. On the other hand, booking at the last minute can be risky unless you're flexible.

4. Use Incognito Mode or Private Browsing

It might sound like a myth, but I’ve personally seen hotel prices jump after searching multiple times for the same location. Using incognito mode or clearing cookies helps avoid dynamic pricing.

5. Call the Hotel Directly

This is a trick that has worked for me multiple times. Once I’ve found the best price online, I call the hotel directly and ask if they can match or beat the price. Many hotels prefer direct bookings because they don’t have to pay commission to booking sites.

6. Consider Alternative Options

Sometimes, staying at a guesthouse, B&B, or Airbnb can offer better value than traditional hotels, especially in more expensive cities. For example, during a trip to Amsterdam, I found a boutique guesthouse for 40% less than hotel listings, and the experience was far more personal.

7. Use Cashback and Discount Sites

Before finalizing a booking, I check if cashback websites like Rakuten or credit card portals offer additional discounts. A few times, I’ve gotten 5–10% back just for clicking through those platforms.

8. Travel During Shoulder Season

If your schedule is flexible, avoiding peak travel times can save you a ton. During my trip to Bali in the shoulder season (April), hotel prices were nearly 30% cheaper compared to July or August.

Final Thoughts:

Getting a great hotel booking deal is part strategy, part luck, and part timing. By using a mix of websites, checking directly with hotels, and taking advantage of rewards and discounts, you can save significantly without compromising your travel experience. For me, it’s become a kind of game — one that pays off with more trips and better stays.

How is everyone getting cheaper hotel rooms than me?

Posted by never___nude · in r/TravelHacks · 2 years ago

I travel lots for soccer to get my son to games and I seem to be overpaying for my stays in hotels. When I ask other people their rates, they seem to be consistently cheaper than my stays for the same hotel. Some say Expedia, or other booking sites, some say book last minute - but I just feel like I’m missing something. My last stay I was as much as $59 more a night for the same room as others. I worked in sales at a large hotel. Why isn't your team booking a block if rooms together? That's the best way for everyone to get the lowest rate. Otherwise I just let Google find me the lowest rate and then use that particular booking site. Happens to be Expedia very often but sometimes not. I empathize with you though. My nephews played traveling baseball and hockey. It's a huge cost to parents.

This is the answer---book a block of rooms. I coached a team for 15 years. We asked parents at the beginning of the season to tell us what the ideal rate they would pay. We actually hit cities a few times and went to the same hotel for volume and some hotels were managed by the same company in different cities and we got a break.

Sometimes, part of this difference is paying up front vs. at the end of a stay.

Years ago we stayed at a Hilton for a couple weeks. I booked a better ate online than my mom had booked through the hotel. She complained at the front desk and that was the explanation, non refundable cash upfront carried more value to them than payment at the end. So she asked to pay then and they took hundreds off her bill.

Use hotels.com and Expedia to check the prices first, once you find one that looks good to you call the hotel and ask them what the rate is. Sometimes hotels will have cheaper prices if booked directly thru them, other times it’s cheaper thru 3rd parties.

Yeah, this may be the biggest key. Many loyalty programs start providing discounts right away, without you really having to hit ant tier levels, simply via access to private sales.

Travel hacking is a larger topic than this, but there is literally no reason not to start having loyalty tracked.

If/when you're ready to commit to focusing on a specific chain, that's when more specific strategies (including chain credit cards and points) come into play.

Most of the time I’ve found that booking direct through the hotel is cheapest or at least equal price. Also they prefer if you book through them because they don’t have to sacrifice the 10-20% cut to the 3rd party booking website. So you are more likely to get upgrades when you book direct.

In saying that, I still occasionally book through booking.com when their ‘genius’ (member) discount makes it cheaper.

Hotel Manager here... There are basically only a few companies. Expedia is the largest and they own hotels.com, travelocity, orbitz, trivago, vrbo, and a few others. Booking Holdings owns priceline, agoda, kayak, booking.com and a few others. They are basically all the same thing. Now, within those sites, it is about the way you book. You can book prepaid and not prepaid. If you book not prepaid, it is basically the same as going through the hotel's website. If you book prepaid, you pay them and then they (Expedia, etc) send over their one-time use credit card and we charge that. A prepaid reservation is usually cheaper but you better be sure this is what you want. The hotel can't change it. We can cancel the reservation but this really only just refunds EXPEDIA's card... not yours. We can't change names, dates, length of stay.. nothing. To get it changed, you have to call them and jump through about a million hoops and they blatantly lie to you.
Also, remember that the hotel's rates are usually up front. If it is $149, it is just that plus tax. Expedia, etc. Will list it as $134 +tax and then they throw on a $15 service fee essentially making it the same as going through the hotel. Also, at my hotel, if you book through a 3rd party, you do not get breakfast because the food cost is offsetting the commission fee that we have to pay on these reservations.
TL/DR version - book through the hotel. it will save you hassle, you may lose other perks, and the rates are going to be about the same.

So even when I see these ridiculously low rates (Say $50) on the 3rd party sites, the hotel has approved or offered the same rate? Do you have to call to get these rates because often times the hotel website still shows full price for same day bookings.

Often the hotels website, especially when they have a loyalty program for members.

3rd party websites all have exclusive deals for members or loyalty points, VIP, Rewards nowadays. So the more you book at those 3rd party websites the more points or deals you get. Some have deals like for every 10th night you get 1 night for free, etc.

Its just hard to pinpoint which is the best because it is different per region and type of accomodation you stay at.

If you stay at big global chains, check out their own loyalty program, because 3rd party stays dont count towards it.

thats why websites exists, that crawl for you the daily prices. But they dont include all the bonus for memberships, loyalty or mobile phone discounts, etc... Yeah there needs to be a website that has everything.

Something like google hotels just with much more options and filters.

It's best to book direct. Many 3rd party sites are scams or scammy. Some blatantly don't book you for the displayed rate because they can't and just take the non-refundable booking fee.

If you are traveling International… always book hotel, trains, ferry's, flights direct. And if you can, call 1day before to confirm. Sometimes, you can schmooze enough to be free upgrades.

I’ve found it’s cheaper to book through 3rd party like Expedia but it could also depend on the state your in or planing to go to.

I’d say, search it through the hotel site first and take note of when they want payment, and the cancelation date limits, then go to the 3rd party site your interested in and compare those items.

If you're doing Hawaii, call the hotels customer service to ask for details on amenities, best rooms, local recommendations and see if the hotel is under construction in any way. That's a big trip. At the moment on Maui nowtill dec many of the 4/5 star hotels are doing major rennovations. This outside of lahaina in waliea.

You do it the same exact way you do it with 3rd party sites. Hope this helps!

I usually look at the options on Booking. Most of the time, I find a better deal on the hotel website. If you are an AAA or CAS member, a senior (usually 62+), or are in the military you can check that in the special code section (most US hotels). Also look at the "member rates.". Joining the loyalty programs are free. You can get discounts, and collect points.

how to get the best hotel deals

Here are some key considerations for getting the best hotel deals:

  1. Book in Advance: Generally, booking your hotel several weeks or even months in advance can help you secure better rates, especially during peak travel seasons.

  2. Use Price Comparison Websites: Utilize websites like Kayak, Trivago, or Google Hotels to compare prices across multiple booking platforms. This helps you find the best available rate.

  3. Sign Up for Alerts: Many travel websites and apps allow you to set price alerts for specific hotels or destinations. This way, you’ll be notified when prices drop.

  4. Be Flexible with Dates: If possible, be flexible with your travel dates. Rates can vary significantly depending on the day of the week or time of year. Mid-week stays are often cheaper than weekends.

  5. Check for Discounts: Look for discounts through memberships (AAA, AARP), credit card rewards, or loyalty programs. Many hotels offer exclusive rates for members.

  6. Consider Package Deals: Sometimes booking a flight and hotel together can result in significant savings. Check travel sites that offer package deals.

  7. Call the Hotel Directly: After finding a good rate online, consider calling the hotel directly. They may offer you a better rate or additional perks (like free breakfast) if you book directly.

  8. Use Cashback and Reward Programs: Utilize cashback websites or credit card rewards to earn money back on your hotel bookings.

Recommendation: Combining these strategies will maximize your chances of finding the best hotel deals. For example, use a price comparison site to find a good rate, then call the hotel to see if they can offer a better deal or additional perks.
