TL;DR Use a hoe on dirt and sand, especially at artifact spots and the beach.
Hoeing Dirt and Sand
The most straightforward method to obtain clay in Stardew Valley is by using a hoe on dirt or sand. You can find clay almost anywhere by hoeing, but certain locations are more fruitful than others [1:4]
[2:2]. The beach is particularly noted for having a higher chance of yielding clay compared to other areas
[1:3]
[4:2].
Artifact Spots
Artifact spots, often marked by wiggly worms, are excellent places to dig for clay. These spots frequently yield clay, among other items [1:2]
[2:5]
[5:1]. Make sure to hoe these spots whenever you see them to maximize your chances of finding clay.
Mines and Other Hoeable Areas
The mines are another good location for finding clay. Hoeing dirt tiles in the mines can also yield cave carrots, ores, and artifacts, making it a productive activity [2:2]
[5:1]. Additionally, areas like Robin's front yard can be hoed for clay
[2:3]
[5:2].
Energy Efficiency Tips
To conserve energy while searching for clay, consider upgrading your hoe, as it uses the same amount of energy whether charged or not [2:2]
[5:3]. Alternatively, bombing soil in the mines can be a less energy-intensive way to uncover clay
[4:5].
Additional Resources
For more detailed information, you can refer to the Stardew Valley Wiki which provides comprehensive guidance on obtaining clay [3:1].
Any time you see wiggly worms, dig it up, you’ll get a lot of clay that way.
And not just the worms, you can dig up clay almost everywhere
Head to the beach with the hoe. I've found a lot there.
Dig about with the hoe and you’ll find it. I always have too much
As the title says what is the best way to get clay
One nice thing about the hoe is it uses the same amount of energy no matter if its charged up or just hitting a single spot. Clay is kind of hard to get I don't like hoeing dirt for clay much.
Since you might as well get the most out of the activity I would only look for clay with an upgraded hoe if you want to do it on the farm you can hoe weeds for a 2 for one effect (gets rid of the weed, and hoes dirt) sometimes you get mixed seeds.
Better still is to hoe dirt in the mines so you can get clay, cave carrots, ores, and artifacts if you don't get any clay.
winter time is good for clay if you must hoe for it outside the mines. Many more artifact spots spawn and you could get a snow yam or something else.
Just keep hoeing the ground. Everywhere. Artifact spots. Dirt tiles in the mines. Dirt tiles in front of Robin’s house. Everywhere. Do it.
I would just hoe everything that is hoeable
Artifact spots and hoeable dirt in the mines
Try and find a particular artifact... You're almost guaranteed to find clay instead
(Seriously though - hoe every patch of dirt you can, including the beach)
hello i'm a beginner in sdv and want to buy the silo. how tf do you get a clay can someone help me 😭
Hoeing dirt or sand.
i'm in pain trying to get 10 clays to build a new silo. i dig up about 30 tiles of dirt/sand before getting a single one. i tried the geode technique as well. out of 10 geodes, i only got 1 clay. help pls
Digging on the beach has a higher chance than normal ground
Good to know
the little squiggles coming out of the ground are a great place to get clay
i only ever found one, on the path leading to the beach
Spam floors like floor 55 and Hoe the soil!
You can also bomb the soil in the mines for less energy consumption
Plz take mine. It’s all I ever freakin dig up and it drives me absolutely insane
Hoe up the beach and other hoe-able areas like Robin’s front yard.
Upgrade the shit out of your hoe and then go to the mines and start tilling. You’ll need the dwarves scrolls eventually anyway
Whenever I need clay, I usually go to the mines. Clay is pretty common there, plus if you're lucky there's a chance for things like artifacts and cave carrots for energy. Always dig up artifact spots when you see them, as clay is a pretty common drop there.
I need clay to make a silo so my lone chicken doesn't die. What are the ways I can do that?
In my experience, if you just hoe every dirt square that has worms on it you'll start to get a pretty good amount!
Thank you :)
Get your hoe out and just hoe everything.
Thank you! :)
Animals can’t die btw
Oh! Thank you :) I'll stop worrying
You can get it from hoeing up dirt/sand/artifact spots or from geodes.
Thank you!
digging up dirt/sand
Thanks :)
been searching for clay all over and can't find any. I know with copper you can try panning for it. Sort of like a built in bad luck protection. Is there an alternative way to get clay if it doesn't turn up?
Sorry if this is a dumb question I'm a new player. Rain is common where I'm at and this is the area I've explored searching for clay so far.
[Edit] image seems to have error'd out but it was a pretty massive area. been exploring for 9 ish hours
You haven't found it because you're not looking carefully. Slow down and look closely to your surroundings, if you say the area has high rainfall, there has to be clay somewhere. Remember that clay can be either blue-ish or red and grass can grow on top of it.
I've been looking for clay VERY carefully. Trust me lol I've been at it for many hours. I even gave up and looked up a guide on how to find clay just to see what it looked like.
Every map I played has clay everywhere. You are missing it. First playthrough I missed it as well.
Then you gotta be the most unlucky player of VS because there's no way that you've been looking "carefully" for 9 hours and haven't found a single block of clay, delete the world and start from scratch in a new seed
You can get blue clay from panning, but it takes forever. If you must do it this way, I suggest making bare necessities like cooking pot, bowl, crucible, hammer and pickaxe mold. Finding one clay deposit is much better and you probably missed it, red clay is quite common.
Panning it is. Low-key I'm worried my world is bugged and just didn't generate any clay at all. Every guide and video I've seen they usually just trip over 10 patches of clay a day.
I downloaded a mod that adds new ruins to the world on a friends recommendation and I wonder if it maybe messed with something
I've simply gotten unlucky before. I'm an experienced player, I know how to spot clay, yet there was none in about a 1k block radius from where I spawned despite the climate being right. I even installed particles plus (which is a mod that makes particles come out of specific blocks that I'd recommend to new players until you learn to spot stuff) just to make sure I wasn't being stupid. Nope, no clay.
It happens. It's not necessarily you.
It might have, since clay is a post-terrain generated feature. I'm constantly tripping over clay and peat, so if you're searching that long for a common feature there's definitely a problem. What mod? You might want to check with a new creative world using the same seed with the mod disabled and see if clay generates in the places you've looked. If so, it's definitely the mod and you should not only remove the mod, but alert the mod developer about the issue. Removing clay is a game-breaking bug that makes their mod unusable.
FYI, F3 will toggle flight and no-clip mode in creative to make checking easier.
I cant believe nobody else has given you the answer yet.
Turn on the full color map if you dont already have it enabled, and look for areas of discoloration in the soil.
Those discolored areas will either be clay, or peat. Both are useful
I actually did
there actually wasn't any clay in my world at all, after a restart it was only appearing in new chunks and when mined it crashed my game. So i reinstalled it and now it works as normal and generates as intended
Whole thing was wonky tbh. I probably installed it wrong. I did move it from one drive to another after installing it which is probably the cause
I all but guarantee there is clay. Keep in mind that clay will grow grass on it, but that this grass won't grow as fully as on dirt. Look for odd, roughly circular patches or take a look at both red and blue colors of clay deposits from the side (they're radically different).
Its not easy to just see, you need to look at the sides of blocks.
I’ve been trying to collect clay recently for my brick paths but when farming i realized i wasn’t getting much. After further research i found out that in 1.6 update it was apparently changed. Does anyone know the most efficient way to get clay??
I have read about this in many posts.. but I’m playing with the 1.6 update and I have no trouble getting clay at all
https://www.nexusmods.com/stardewvalley/mods/23768?tab=posts This is robin sells clay

Idk how helpful it is, but...
!If you max out all your skills and get into the Mastery Cave, you can make totems that spawn treasure spots on the ground. If you use them on either Stardew or Ginger beach, you'll get a lot of clay. If you use it on the island beach, you'll also get tons of golden coconuts and omi geodes, the latter of which could contain clay.!<
You can also use Stardew Predictor to know in advance what is in the geodes so you know what order to open them to maximize clay. This is a good one for if you're not that close to being able to do what's in the spoiler above.
Is the mastery cave available on the switch version?
It's vanilla.
Are geodes still deterministic with legacy randomization off?
Ginger island in the mini quarry. It spawns clay rocks.
Also level 15/55/95 of the mines had soil that you can get tons from
The mini quarry? What's that? Do you mean the dig site?
I think they mean the dig site, by the field office on ginger island. It spawns clay, and bone rocks.
Tractor mod is how I’ve managed. Either hoeing the beach or those levels in the mines with the big dirt areas. Can easily zip around switching between hoe and pickaxe to do it over and over again
Can easily zip around switching between hoe and pickaxe to do it over and over again
Or use big bombs! :D
As people have said. Upgrade how and dig in mines or ginger island is the most reliable.
However there are mods that have Robin sell clay if you don’t mind just buying it. It’s kind of annoying early game.
Personally I use a mod that adds a bunch of locations north of the farm and one of them is a quarry that spawns clay nodes.
Hello, just started playing the game few days ago, I am at the end of spring atm and only found 7 clay by finding these 'worms' on the beach and using my shovel. Is there a way to get clay faster? I need only 10 for the silo but it takes forever to find.
There's a method called clay-farming - if you're really good and can use animation cancelling, you can get like, 200 clay in one day, but i think for the average player, you can get maybe 20-40 ish. I think it's a bit difficult to wrap your head around, but i'm sure there's a guide on it somewhere.
'worms' are artifact spots. Any tillable ground can yield clay but not guaranteed to yield anything unless it is an artifact spot. I am constantly pursuing clay. I'm late game so my strategy is different than in early game.
You can use your hoe on dirt and sand, with a bit of luck you'll find some more.
Oh I did not know that, thanks
Hi! I suggest going to the mines. Go to the first layer of levels(?) (Level 1-30 to be exact) and dig up the dirt parts there. I forgot the level number but there is this one level where its mostly made of dirt that you can dig. I got so much clay from there c:
Good idea, thx
I've tried hoeing the ground repeatedly. So far that's got me 2 out of 10 clay that I need for a silo. Help please.
Hoe the big dirty floors in the mines. You'll get more cave carrots than clay, but it's all good.
Go to the beach and just hoe everywhere you can. You should get a decent amount. That's how I got enough for my silo :)
Thanks, worked perfectly :)
The wiggly worms you see in the ground also has a chance of giving like 3 clay. It takes time
