How to Get Coal in Stardew Valley

TL;DR

  • Farm dust sprites in the mines (levels 40-69)
  • Use charcoal kilns to convert wood into coal
  • Purchase coal from Clint if you have spare gold

Dust Sprites Farming

One of the most efficient ways to gather coal in Stardew Valley is by farming dust sprites, which are found between levels 40 and 69 in the mines. Dust sprites have a 50% chance to drop coal, making them a reliable source [1:2][2:1]. Using a Burglar's Ring can increase the drop rate, potentially doubling the amount of coal obtained [5:1].

Charcoal Kilns

Another method is using charcoal kilns to convert wood into coal. While this requires a significant amount of wood, it provides a consistent supply of coal without relying on mining [2:2][5:5]. You can obtain the crafting recipe for charcoal kilns at Foraging level 4 [2:2].

Purchasing Coal

If you have sufficient funds, buying coal directly from Clint at the blacksmith is an option. This method can be particularly useful when you need large quantities quickly [1:5][4:1]. However, it's important to manage your budget, especially in the early game [2:1].

Additional Tips

  • Mine carts within the mines can provide coal, but they only drop once per cart [1:1][2:5].
  • Opening geodes can occasionally yield coal, providing another source alongside mining [2:1].
  • On good luck days, rocks in the mines may drop more coal than usual [2:6].
  • In Skull Caverns, floors reset each time you enter, allowing repeated opportunities to collect coal from mine carts [2:7][2:8].

By combining these methods, you can efficiently gather coal for crafting and other needs in Stardew Valley.

Does anyone have good ways to farm a good amout of coal? Ive already spent so much wood to get it, you only get such a small amount in the mines (in my opinion)

You can buy it from clint, but I like farming dust sprites in the caves, each has a 50% chance to drop it, and ALOT spawn.

I'm turning the quarry into a "lumber farm" by planting all the wild tree seeds I get. That one is full now, so I'm starting on the train station next.

Don’t forget about the mine carts inside the mine, you can get 6 coal from them (but only once). Same with the bags on the floor in some of the levels, those have coal in them as well. I’ve never had to use wood to make coal.

Charcoal kilns are a good way to make up for a coal deficit. It's a bit wood-expensive, but wood is really easy to get and it's so much more convenient than trying to farm it all off sprites.

You should get the crafting recipe for the kilns at Foraging level 4.

Go into the mines and hit all the rocks. You’ll get a fair bit of coal that way.

In the later years, get a kiln(?) and it will produce coal from wood.

If you havent already click on the mine carts as you see them- theyll drop some( but usually only once).

Incidentally - while these only drop once in the normal mines, does anyone know how they behave in the Skull Caverns? Because, so far, I haven't found a single mine cart that *didn't* drop me in coal in the Skull Caverns, and I'm pretty sure I've repeated a floor already. Is it per-floor-but-also-per-layout? Per-floor-per-layout-AND-per-theme? No limit whatsoever?

I don't think there's a limit, since all the floors in the skull cavern are randomized each time you go in

In the first couple of years, farming dust sprites is my default solution.

Opening a batch of geodes often gives you some, so if you have Clint open 100 magma geodes or frozen geodes, you are apt to get 10-15 pieces of coal.

So somehow..(cooking meals and crafting like crazy for the star path). I’ve blow through my zillion coal stash…ok hundreds. Now when I’m mining I’m lucky if I get a single piece. Rocks and rocks galore but one piece of coal every few locations. Is it me?

I need SO MUCH coal for crafting many preserve jars, but it feels like mining is taking too long to get as much as I need. What's your favorite or quickest way if getting coal? Maybe there's a way I don't know.

i second the dust sprites. easiest way for me to get coal. eventually you can get a lot at the skull cavern since the levels reset everything but for earlier game, i would just grind the mines levels 40-79. you can reset them by waiting in the main area of the mines where the dwarf is until 10 in-game minutes have passed.

I am constantly low on coal, like <10 at any given time. I know there are dust sprites in the mine, but they've honestly been pretty unreliable and a time burner from when I've tried.

The best I've been able to manage is using charcoal kilns, but then I'm constantly low on wood, and to remedy that, I process hardwood into wood, which requires constantly going to the Secret Woods. ;- ;

Every time I start a new file, I save up as much cash as I can and spend everything except spring's seed money on buying wood from Robin. Both for future construction and to turn into coal. Her year 1 wood prices are crazy low.

After year 1 it does get trickier; Clint's coal prices become better but still pricey in large quantities. At that point I just grind the caves. Skull Cavern is my preference. I dunno that it's faster than killing dust sprites but it's more fun and you still get occasional coal carts.

Maybe you could go to mine floor 40~60? the dust spirits there have quite a high chance to drop a coal, if you have a burglar's ring, they also will have the chance to drop 2, I guess it's a great use of your free time and it do not waste resources as making preserve jars and kegs require LOTS of wood.

Coal is the rarest thing in the game and you always need more :D

One option for later parts of the game is to have mahogany/normal trees planted at the train station, desert, quarry, then bomb/cut down and dump wood into charcoal kilns. Or monster musk and iron-level mines for the sprites :)

You know those rocks that you try to avoid early on because they take two hits to break? Once you've upgraded to a copper pickaxe they only take one, and they're fairly good about dropping coal (as well as guaranteed stone). They're also good for mining experience, since regular rocks don't give any unless they drop something. Mining level has a small effect on coal drop rates (small as in 4% of the max boost from daily luck per level).

There's also charcoal kilns, of course.

Quickest way to get coal?

Hello!

So I’m on my 2nd year, Fall 1, but I’m constantly in a coal deficit. I’ve tried the approach of killing Dust Sprites in the mines + fishing for treasure and looking for coal in the chests, but it takes all the energy and I only get about 8 pieces max a day(even if I spend the whole day on it).

Are there any other, quicker ways of getting coal?

Go for lumber jack perk in foraging skill tree then buy 7 wood chipper then those 7 can convert 7 hardwood to at best 80-72ish wood then convert to coal, I have gathered 500 hardwood so when I need wood or coal then I just convert since they're fast enough

Not original commenter, but: Start at floor 40. I think to floor 59. The light blue/winter themed floors. Kill all the soot sprite things, they drop coal. Don't waste too much time trying to find the ladder, you can always just go to one of the levels in the elevator (40,45,50,55) back and forth and the monsters will respawn. I regularly find a hefty amount, and that's without any ring bonuses.

Keep killing dust sprites until you get the reward from gil, which will help you get more monster drops. Then use it while killing more dust sprites to get more coal. Coal deficit is so real though, especially when you're trying to craft things with it.

Getting the ring from killing 500 dust sprites is def. the best option! Also, buying a ton of coal in the first year is a good option too, since in the second year prices go up by quite a bit, sadly it doesn't apply to you anymore, but still buying coal from Clint isn't so bad since it saves the grind and time, and sooner than later gold isn't a problem anymore unless you are saving for the pricest end-game items.

Also, when you're in the mines, some of the minecarts contain coal, as do the coal bags (the things that look kinda like guitar cases). It's not a huge boost but it's like 5 pieces or so every time you find one that does.

How do I get coal

Posted by EvFunk · in r/StardewValley · 6 years ago

Ok so this is my first play of the game and I am in my 1 year. My question is how do I get coal as further in the game you get plenty of any ore you want except for coal. I am on level 100-105 of the mine and I read on the Stardew Valley wiki that I should farm Dust Sprites for coal but they only give me around 15 per day. My question is what is the most efficient way to get lots of coal for one day. Thank you in advance

I don't know if the Prospector profession is actually functional. I made about 20-30 runs through skull cavern with Prospector, and then started over a new game and have made about 50 more runs with Blacksmith. (I'm the guy that made a lot of people change their mind about the slingshot).

There was no noticable difference between the amount of coal I found per-run whether I had Blacksmith or Prospector. With Prospector, I'd typically find somewhere between 35 and 55 coal per run, which made me very worried about how much I'd find with Blacksmith, and I went into the new playthrough assuming that it'd be even worse, but the results are exactly the same.

I definitely suggest hunting for dust spirits, and once you get bugler rings for hunting 500 dust spirits, you will get usually 40+ coals in a day. I probably would not suggest using clin, because woods are also very valuable commodity, and spending 10 woods to get one coal doesn't sit well with me.

At the end, coal/wood/stone will always be a bottle neck for making something. The best way to go is to make tons of money and just buy those materials.

I recommend the Burglars Ring as it gives you double the chance of monsters dropping loot as well as a chance of them dropping more than one item. I used to have an issue with running out of coal until I got the ring. Now I just go through levels 40-60 and farm dust sprites.

how to get coal in stardew valley

To obtain coal in Stardew Valley, consider the following methods:

  1. Mining:

    • Coal can be found in the mines, particularly in the lower levels (levels 1-40). Look for coal nodes, which are black rocks that drop coal when broken.
    • You can also find coal by breaking regular rocks, especially in the mines.
  2. Killing Monsters:

    • Certain monsters drop coal when defeated. For example, the Shadow Brute, Shadow Shaman, and Rock Carbs have a chance to drop coal.
  3. Crafting:

    • You can craft coal from 10 pieces of wood using a furnace. This is a good option if you have excess wood and need coal quickly.
  4. Treasure Chests:

    • Coal can sometimes be found in treasure chests while fishing or exploring.
  5. Geodes:

    • Breaking open geodes at the Blacksmith can yield coal among other resources.
  6. Gift from NPCs:

    • Occasionally, NPCs may give you coal as a gift, especially during certain events.

Recommendation: If you're looking to stock up on coal, focus on mining and defeating monsters in the mines, as these methods can yield a good amount of coal without consuming other resources. Additionally, consider crafting coal if you have a surplus of wood, as it provides a reliable source.
