How to Get Hardwood in Stardew Valley

TL;DR

  • Secret Woods: Daily stumps for hardwood [2:1]
  • Mahogany Trees: Plant seeds and use tree fertilizer [1:2], [3:3]
  • Farm Layout: Forest Farm provides daily regenerating stumps [5:2]

Secret Woods

The Secret Woods is a reliable source of hardwood. Once you have upgraded your axe to steel, you can access the Secret Woods by breaking the large log blocking the path in the Cindersap Forest [3:2]. Inside, there are six stumps that respawn daily, each providing hardwood when chopped [2:2]. This area is a consistent way to gather hardwood every day.

Mahogany Trees

Planting mahogany seeds is another effective method to obtain hardwood. Mahogany seeds can be found from chopping large stumps or as drops from slimes in the Secret Woods [4:5]. You can plant these seeds on your farm or in areas like the quarry or train station to create a mahogany forest [2:8]. Using tree fertilizer will help these trees grow faster, allowing you to harvest hardwood more quickly [1:3].

Farm Layout

Choosing the Forest Farm layout at the beginning of the game can significantly increase your hardwood yield. This farm type has several regenerating hardwood stumps that provide a steady supply of hardwood each day [5:3]. If you didn't choose this layout initially, focusing on the Secret Woods and planting mahogany trees will be your best alternatives.

Foraging Specialization

If you've leveled up your foraging skill, consider respecializing to gain more hardwood from regular trees. This option allows any chopped tree to drop hardwood, increasing your overall yield [5:1]. However, note that this feature may not be available on mobile versions due to version differences.

Additional Tips

In addition to the methods mentioned above, hardwood can occasionally be found as drops in the mines [5:4]. While not a primary source, it can supplement your hardwood collection. Always ensure your axe is sufficiently upgraded (copper for stumps, steel for logs) to maximize your hardwood harvesting capabilities [3:3].

I’m fairly new to stardew… but there HAS to be a more efficient way to get hardwood! What am I missing? 12 pieces a day is taking forever!

Plant some of those mahogany seeds they drop. Eventually, you will have a hardwood forest. I plant them next to Marnie’s house and near Grandpa’s grave.

As you level up foraging you can choose different options, I always choose the option for hardwood to drop from any chopped tree. Then slightly later game I always have enough.

The large stumps scattered around your farm or the large hollow logs.

If you've unlocked the Secret Woods, there are six stumps that respawn every day

Far top-left of the woods south of the farm. You need to have a steel axe to clear the path, though.

Secret woods. they give 12 hardwood each day, and a random chance of dropping mahogany seeds. I recommend planting the mahogany seeds until you get a tree, and chop them.

You need to upgrade your axe in order to harvest hardwood — big tree stumps will drop some when you chop them up. Theres a secret part of the woods near the wizard’s tower blocked by a fallen log that generates a couple of those tree stumps everyday. That’s your best resource

Assuming you didn't specilize for it.

Then hardwood comes from stumps and logs. All the farms have some as one time harvests, the forest farm has daily hardwood stumps in addition to the temporary ones.

Beyound that Cindersnap forest has a log blocking the path to the secret woods that has daily hardwood stumps you can havest every day. (don't foret to navigate the secret path down to the lower stumps.

edit

You need a copper axe to harvest stumps, and steel axe to harvest logs.

Upgrade your pickaxe and plant mahogany seeds to get the hardwood trees (they're yellow) or break tree stumps on your farm if you're playing 4 corner farm the top left square has a hard wood stump you can chop once a day

Where can I get the seeds? Is it just from the big stumps or is there another way?

1 upvotes on reddit

For early game, only those stumps and slimes in secret woods. Stumps have a higher chance while slimes are low-ish. Once you unlock quarry or train station, just plant there and make a mahogany farm. Or you can use a small plot of your farm instead.

Break any tree stumps on the farm.

Take the path down to the forest from the farm and go to the top left corner. There's a giant log you can break once your axe is upgraded high enough. That'll take you to the secret forest where tree stumps respawn every day. Breaking those gives you hardwood.

The easiest path to hardwood is to choose the Forest Farm map at the start. Otherwise, once you pick up all the ones on your farm, the most reliable source is the Secret Forest. Yes, this takes a while and I'm 100% convinced that ConcernedApe set it up this way to bottleneck player progress from happening too quickly.

Yes - I have been playing through with the forest farm and there are I think 9 regenerating hardwood stumps a day. I have so much I don't know what to do with it. On my first playthrough on the regular farm I remember having to grind for so long to get that 2nd house upgrade (because of course I didn't realize I needed so much hardwood until I got to that point, so hadn't been going to the secret woods everyday)

1 upvotes on reddit
misty350 · 5 years ago

Not a lot but you can also get hardwood as drops in the mines. But yeah upgrade your axe to silver then cut down the log to the hidden forest and go there every day. Take your sword because there are also slimes.

Probably the stumps in the hidden forest area

19 upvotes on reddit
Miniscule47 · 5 years ago

Stumps in the hidden forest unless you have a farm layout that allows you to harvest it on your farm. If you have a bunch of trees you need to cut, you can go to the respecialization bear in the sewer and change your foraging to the 'get more wood' one and then 'trees can drop hardwood'. I can get that specialization and go around the cindersnap forrest and get like 60 hardwood. This does not work on mobile though as they're not in 1.4

I use the skill which gives me a chance to drop Hardwood and the skill which increases the amount of wood I get from trees (I think it applies to hardwood too, as I get about 13 to 15 hardwood from the woods each day). I save up seeds so that I can spam the bus stop (too lazy to go anywhere else) for a chopping spree.

Other than playing the forest farm, grinding out the secret woods is the best way. Sometimes barrels in the caverns will drop them, but that’s not necessarily worth counting on.

You could, idk how much hardwood per tree it gives you, but you could change it back after either (1) you get enough hardwood or (2) you decide it isn’t worth going without the other perks.

You can cut down the trees in the forest to the south of the farm, they automatically regrow, so if you have the skill that's a good way, beyond that getting lucky and getting a mahogany seed and the secret forest are the only way I know how to get hardwood.

Large stumps with a copper axe. Upgrade it again to steel and you can hit logs as well. Break the log to the top far left corner of Cindersap Forest. (directly below your farm!) to get access to the secret woods. Youll get 12 hardwood every day there from breaking the stumps.

If you dont have any upgrades yet hardwood appears in mines from breaking barrels/crates/chests

To add to this, you can trade a stingray for a mahogany seed in Ginger Island. Stingrays reproduce every 4 days I think in the fish pond, so I make it a seasonal task for me to harvest all but 1 of my stingrays on each pond, trade it in for seeds and plant (with fertilizer).

How to get hardwood in stardew valley

To obtain hardwood in Stardew Valley, consider the following methods:

  1. Chop Down Trees:

    • Use a Steel Axe or better to chop down large trees (Oak, Maple, and Pine).
    • Each large tree yields 2-3 hardwood.
  2. Stumps and Fallen Branches:

    • Chop down tree stumps and fallen branches with any axe. Each stump gives 1 hardwood.
    • Fallen branches can be found on the ground in various locations.
  3. Secret Woods:

    • Access the Secret Woods by using a Steel Axe to break the large log blocking the entrance.
    • Inside, you can find several large stumps that respawn daily, providing a good source of hardwood.
  4. Foraging:

    • Occasionally, hardwood can be found as forage items in the forest or on the beach.
  5. Crafting:

    • Once you have enough hardwood, you can use it to craft various items, including the Bow, the Stable, and the Wood Chipper.

Key Takeaway: Focus on upgrading your axe to Steel or higher to maximize your hardwood collection efficiently. The Secret Woods is a particularly valuable location for gathering hardwood, so make sure to visit regularly!
