TL;DR
Downloading Audacity
To install Audacity, first visit the official Audacity download page. You'll need to select the version that matches your operating system's architecture—either 32-bit or 64-bit. To determine which version you need, check your system type by going to Settings > System > About on your Windows PC [2:1].
Installing Audacity
Once you've downloaded the appropriate version, run the installer and follow the on-screen instructions. The process is straightforward and similar to installing other software on Windows. After installation, Audacity should be ready to use for audio editing tasks.
Installing FFmpeg for Audacity
If you need to work with formats like M4A, you'll need to install FFmpeg libraries for Audacity. First, ensure that Audacity can find these libraries by checking if there's an ffmpeg folder in the Audacity > Plug-Ins directory. If not, create one and download the necessary files from a reliable source [3:1]. Once extracted, you can verify their presence by opening Audacity, navigating to Edit > Preferences > Libraries, and clicking the Locate button to ensure Audacity recognizes the FFmpeg library.
Troubleshooting Installation Issues
If you're having trouble with FFmpeg installation, make sure the downloaded files are executable and check any logs for errors [1:2]. If issues persist, consult the Audacity manual or community forums for specific guidance
[1:1].
By following these steps, you should be able to successfully install Audacity and its necessary components on your Windows machine, enabling you to edit audio files efficiently.
Hello guys, I have a problem.
I wanted to clean up some white noise in a m4a file a friend of mine made for me (intro and outro music for my channel on YT and Twitch).
Now I tried to install the ffmpeg, but after downloading and unzipping it, it just doesn‘t start the installation process. Any guesses on what might cause that...?
Windows 10 user :-)
Best regards
Already found that, it didn‘t cover my problem, but thx nonetheless - any other suggestions...?
Did you ensure the file can execute? What does your log say?
Hold down your Windows key then hit Pause|Break. In the window that pops up, look under Device Specifications|System Type. Follow whatever it says there.
Thank you.
I would check your system architecture, go to Settings -> System -> About and look for System type, if it says 64-bit operating system then I’d get the 64-bit version of audacity (no need to get 32-bit in this case). Depending on how new your laptop is, it’s probably 64-bit.
Thanks, will do.
I has installed on my PC, but Audacity can't find the FFMPEG libraries, what can I do?
Check in your Audacity > Plug-Ins folder. It should have a folder called ffmpeg. If it doesn't, create it, then download this zip file and extract it to the ffmpeg folder. Now Audacity should find the avformat-55.dll file. You can check it has by opening Audacity, then going to Edit > Preferences > Libraries and click the Locate button.
Thanks man, I was trying to install this since the stone age :)
No worries, as long as you got it working.
Link is dead.
Windows 10.
What? I've had literally dozens open at once (doing batch editing).
This is two projects open. Op is talking about two platform versions running.
So am I. I currently have three separate instances of the program open on my desktop.
Each one has its own menu bar, each one in its own window, three separate icons in my taskbar.
Probably best to explain what you are trying to achieve.
I don't think you can and I don't know why you'd want to.
You might want to include your OS to help people help you.
Having two instances of Audacity running at the same time is verboten. Even having two different versions of Audacity run consecutively can be a disaster: need to keep them separate with "portable settings", (otherwise they overwrite same config file).

I can mod

Specifically, the QM (queen mary) Vamp plugins. I have the thing downloaded as a zip folder, but no idea how to get it into the Audacity program. Should I even be using Audacity? Could someone help with this?
it's been a while but last time i did it, it was something like...
i have done that. i’m not sure if i messed with something beforehand, it shows up as an option to enable when i check to add new ones. under new. when i click to enable it, it doesn’t show up as an option. like, at all. but i check again in the add/remove plugins area and there it is. also, thank you for helping
Check out these instructions. You need to place the plugins in a different folder than other Audacity plugins, as detailed in the link.
alright, thanks for the link, but now it's saying that it failed because it "could not load the library" would you happen to know what this means? I did download the FFmpeg library before, thinking that would help.
Here's a tip for people who want to download Audacity:
When downloading Audacity, instead of downloading the recommended file, download the other options (depending on your 64-bit or 32-bit operating system). The other options are the Audacity executable itself, while the recommended file downloads something completely different, for some reason.
The "without musehub" version is available from the Audacity website, but Windows users need to be very careful or they risk getting the musehub installer instead.
A safer alternative official place to get Audacity is from Audacity's GitHub repository.
Audacity is also available from FossHub. While this is no longer an official download location, they were Audacity's official download partner prior to Muse Group's acquisition.
For Windows users, Audacity is also available from the Microsoft Store, but this version may be slightly different, and it might not always be the latest version. Some people have reported that the MS Store version forces updates whether you want them or not, so I'm not recommending this version, just including it here for completeness.
I find it highly disappointing that Muse Group are undermining Audacity's reputation by their lack of transparency when pushing their commercial products to people that just want the free audio editor.
Right like nobody cares about muse group they just want audacity. Incredibly annoying.
but whats musehub?
Good point. As an alternative the software downloads at the Videohelp forum are trustworthy
>"32-bit operating system".
32-bit Audacity will run on a 64-bit operating system, (the only way to use 32-bit plugins in Audcaity).
I've tried stalling it through https://sites.google.com/site/youwashockvst/ but after it said it installed i couldn't find it anywhere. I've also heard that there's a dll file you can download but i can't find that either. I need this plugin for my hyperpop song. Is there anywhere i could download it from. I'm on windows 10, os build 19044.2364
Some more info about my pc:
Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-7500U CPU @ 2.70GHz 2.90 GHz
Installed RAM 16.0 GB (15.9 GB usable)
Let me know if yall find anything! Thanks!
Could have installed the dll\vst in \program files\steinberg or \program files (x86)\steinberg.
If it's in the x86 folder, you'll need the 32 bit version of Audacity
To make a long story short audacity was working fine and then one day I went to open it and it just keeps bringing up error messages every time I try to open it and I've tried plenty of things to get it to stop, if you want more information you could help with the attached link. This is solely to get the message further out there so someone can hopefully see this and help me
Rename the "audacity" folder(s) in AppData\Roaming, (say, to "audacity_old1", "audacity_old2"...) . Then restart Audacity. (NB: If you have different versions of Audacity installed that can corrupt "audacity.cfg" as they will share that file, unless you have/create a "Portable Settings" folder for each version).
Reboot and/or reinstall. Nothing else you can do if you can’t open it.
could you per chance clarify what you mean by this? i restarted my pc and uninstalled and reinstalled audacity already so I do not know if you mean something completely different
You understood me correctly. Sorry can’t advise you further. That’s a tricky one.
Will it work on a Microsoft Surface? An ipad or Chromebook? I really wish there was webversion, but I realize the files it is handingly can get quite large.
I run v.3.1.0 on my Chromebook using the Linux kernel.
I run it on my surface!
Thanks! I need to replace my old Mac and am trying to decide what to get.

> Will there be a version of Audacity for iPod, iPad or other smartphones or tablet computers?

> > Current versions of Audacity work internally with uncompressed audio to permit high quality editing with a wide range of effects. This requires more processing power and disk space than is available on most mobile devices. Also the wxWidgets interface library we use only has limited support for mobile operating systems and small screen resolutions.
