TL;DR To find alien bases in Subnautica, explore the Lost River and Lava Zone using clues from your databank and interactive maps. Key areas include the Deep Grand Reef, Lost River Junction, and Lava Castle.
Databank Clues
Your in-game databank provides essential clues for locating alien facilities. After visiting the first alien base during the Sunbeam sequence, check your databank under Data Downloads > Codes & Clues > Alien Facility Locations [1:2]. This section contains hints about subsequent bases that can guide your exploration without major spoilers.
Key Locations
Several discussions highlight specific locations where alien bases can be found. The Lost River is a crucial area with multiple entrances, including one near Lifepod #2 [5:1]. Within the Lost River, you can find alien pillars leading to the Alien Containment Facility
[3:1]. Another significant base is located in the Active Lava Zone/Lava Castle area
[3:1]
[3:3].
Navigational Tools
Using navigational aids like the Subnautica official interactive map can greatly assist in finding alien bases. This map shows cave entrances and paths to major bases [3:2]. Additionally, some players suggest looking for alien tech light beacons on the surface, which may contain scannable power sources
[5:2].
Tips for Avoiding Hostile Creatures
Navigating these areas can be challenging due to hostile creatures like the Sea Dragon Leviathan. Using your Cyclops for stealth and protection, or switching between vehicles like the Prawn Suit and Cyclops, can help avoid detection [2:2]. Patience and strategic movement are key to safely exploring these regions.
Exploration Strategy
While exploring, listen to your PDA for additional guidance and clues [5:5]. The game encourages exploration, so don't hesitate to venture into different depths and follow environmental cues. Remember, discovering alien bases is part of the broader adventure, so take your time and enjoy the process!
So I just went to the aroura, island, degasi base under the island, have built a cyclops, prawn suit, and seamoth, but I don't know where any alien bases are! I haven't seen a single one except for the island one but I didn't get to go in because a reaper ate me. If you guys have any idea on where to start my quest to cure the disease it would be very helpful. Thanks!
If you've finished the alien base from the Sunbeam sequence, you should have gotten a note in your databank. Databank > Data Downloads > Codes & Clues > Alien Facility Locations. That clue should give you a good lead. I can be more specific if you don't mind spoilers, but that code should be enough to help out.
Have you delt with sunbeam yet? If not make sure your radio is repaired and wait for their transmission it'll lead you to a alien base
Are there more alien bases? I’m still progressing, no major spoilers please but I had a lot of fun with the sunbeam sequence and exploring the base. Wondering if there’s another base I can look forward to exploring.
Oh I know about that one that's where I got eaten
Well the 1st is at the crown looking stone formation and the 2nd can be found at the bottom of the lava zone and you should see a sea of lava with alien tech coming from the ground.
I got grabbed 2 times send help.. but I’m near the base I can feel it
You’ll find it eventually, I suggest using your cyclops to avoid those pesky dragons, I myself did a lot of switching off and waiting around till they left and if they noticed me in my prawn I’d jump right back into my cyclops.
YouTube, where to find the thermal plant or something like that
Anyone know how to avoid them
Use the subnautica official interactive map, shows the entrances to each cave and how to get to the big bases
There's a research base just past the bone fields in the lost river and another base in the lava castle hope this helped.
Google is your friend
There's a base just outside the entrance to the lost river when you go from the Deep Grand Reef left of the degasi base.
In the Lost River Junction there are alien pillars. Follow those and you'll find another alien base which I think is the Alien Containment Facility. The entrance is at the back.
You can find the last one in the Active Lava Zone/Lava Castle area.
We will weaponize the fauna! And we are hiring. Looking for 30+ scientists and assorted personelle for extended stays.
Built it on the intersection of the Mushroom Forest, Bulb Zone and Crash Zone. Close to one of the Alien Portals and the biggest entrance to the lost river.
14 real-time days worth of effort. 95% finished, but I haven't touched it in months.

^^ I made the video with non-fans in mind as well, so I explain some things that you no doubt already know, apologies :)

Very impressive! You did something I’ve only dreamed of. When you used the toilet.. that was just wrong! Lol
> When you used the toilet.. that was just wrong! Lol
Thank you, thank you. takes a bow Totally unscripted :)
That’s really cool
I need to find santuaries alpha, beta, and cappa. As far as I've seen there's no clues to find them.
IIRC, there are alien tech light beacons on the surface to follow but each one might contain a power source which might be scan able...
Is this below zero or subnautica? I've never seen or heard of these.
Both. BZ they light up making them easy to see. I guess my first post should have said pillars rather than lights for SN thou sorry sorry for any confusion.
What game is this?
Go down
Yes I know I need to go down, but there is a million different places I could go down at.
There are not a lot of places to go down where you’re actually supposed to go, just explore and listen to your PDAs
Find the entrance to the lost river, I would recommend taking a seamoth with a mk3 depth module into it, the subnautica interactive map is your friend, but to start you off there is an entrance right next to lifepod #2.
Previous Subnautica stream was amazing and lots of good progress was made. Way to go Wub. In hopes of making it a continued success and keeping chats attention, I wanted to list some quick spoiler free goals to help keep the pacing up.
Next Stream Goals:
Long Term Goals:
Just some general Tips:
Damm, this got a little longer than I was hoping, but I hope it helps! Again I loved the stream and want to see it continue to succeed, but hey sometimes it works sometimes it don't. If this is helpful, I can do it again next week to keep us on track or answer specific questions or whatever. Just let me know, happy to help. Best of luck, and don't forget to just enjoy the game~
A weekly wed.txt of bullet points to keep on track without spoiling/backseating is probably best.
Early game goals today:
Radio radio radio radio radio.
Make the habitat builder(tool) a small base with wall lockers. Seaglide/hand tools/food/water/meds is all you need on you when leaving home.
Unlock equipment blueprints from Databoxes at lifepods/shipwrecks.
Tech fragments can be found/scanned around wrecks to unlock more tools/crafting stations. Scanning plants/fish is optional. Scanning resources like ore outcrops can be helpful later.
>!Lifepod 17 “near a cave system” - we briefly saw the cave system then NOPED out when he saw how deep it was and was consuming triple O2 without a rebreather. Revisit this place when you have rebreather/other things to make depths of 100M+ easier to navigate.!<
Inbetween finding a new loc and gathering mats I'd say build a minor base. It's a lot easier to gather materials and upgrades by going between smaller bases than have everything in one big central base (e.g. big base that is shallows adjacent, small base in kelp field)
I'll settle for a singular base at this point... But perhaps a future goal as we explore the unknown....
The true future goal is to swim out of bounds
The only things I would add are to keep in mind that different biomes have different materials, so if you can't find a mat, you may need to chance it and go deeper.
Oh good thought! That and pay attention to the different rock "types"
Limestone = 50% chance of Copper, 50% chance of Titanium
Sandstone = 25% chance of Gold, 37.5% chance of Lead, 37.5% chance of silver
Felt more like 75% chance of gold, and 12.5 for the others
One of the biggest things that killed my first play through was not using beacons. Absolutely necessary.
Agreed. Cheap to make, easy to use. Fragments for blueprint are right by spawn.
this is awesome
I think this is the correct flair? This is like my 5th ever run on subnautica, coming back every year or so and completely forgetting how to play it. I always try to build bases in new places so the game doesn't get boring (it rarely does anyways). Shame on me for using a map but I have a horrible memory. had these 3 spots in mind for a base. 1st is east of floating islands. I think it's quite a good location but the bonesharks are a nuisanceeeeee. 2th is a spot in the mushroom forest bordering with a few biomes on the north of the map (next to wreck 12). It's cool but a bit boring I guess? The third one is the cliff side of the blood kelp zone. Any tips or recommendations? Thank you, have a wonderful day! :3
I usually just make a cyclops into my base.
That's great, that's surely a way but I need an actual base. Moonpool, scanner room and generally just comfort.
I normally build in the sw grassy plateaus or the nw mushroom forest
Misunderstood the post but I'd say blood kelp trench
That's what I chose, thank you :3
Edge of the BK Trench is my favorite spot.
Very easy access to all resources. Lost River and thermal power nearby.
Just… don’t go too far north.
HAH I made that mistake.. Never loaded a save faster in my life.. Thanks though! :3
Blood kelp trench (option 3) ftw
Especially if you want your >!cyclops down in the LR!<
Okay thank you!!
I’ve built at spot 2! Near the blood Kelp and those two mountains near the floating islands is a good outpost imo, but I struggled with materials a small bit. My main base was elsewhere. The locals are nice, you’re not far from the shallows, not far from the deep end.
It’s a good spot for later game play with quick access to relevant areas. >!The cyclops has a path into the LR!< near that area, but I’ve never personally >!driven my cyclops into the lost river through that tunnel thanks to the Friend outside it!<
Okay thank you so much. I'll probably choose that spot :)
If you don't see a marker, then you haven't visited it which is nice compared to the OG where you have to remember.
To be fair, in the OG you could usually tell with the wrecks by cut open doors and there weren't many alien facilities so it wasn't difficult to remember.
This is coming from someone who can't even hardly remember the day before yesterday.
I'm a fellow person with the memory of a fly. I'll look at the ingredients list of what I'm wanting to make and forget it the second I look away/close the PDA.
They're the ones you've already been to.
Well, they should be automatically hidden when you visit them. (Unless you enabled them again) Or you could use a scanner and look for ion cubes, see where you haven’t visited.
I found the Alien Thermal Plant but I looked in the Inactive Lava Zone and didn't see the hole to Lava Lakes. Any help?
Then you are just bad at looking, it is next to the mountain with the thermal plant in it, right next to it
Look for all of the lava waterfalls. There's a gigantic crater. Go down there.
Look for a big crater next to the mountain, the entrance is in the crater
I believe the hole is south of the mountain
If you aren’t opposed to it, there’s a map on the wiki for all of the zones individually (surface, lr, etc.)
Where should I put my base now? I’ve been not playing subnautica bc SN2 was SUPPOSED to be coming out but as we all know… hasn’t :/ so where should I put my base now? The Xs are where I have had bases in previous play through or I’m not putting a base there
Make a base in the sea walker area that runs entirely on bio reactors
Mushroom Forest, right before the BKZ dropoff
South dunes, burger king foot lettuce gonna have some snacks
I’m ready to move and this seems the most popular. Do you want me to go here?
Edit: I’m going to live at the thermal vent next to Burger King foot lettuce
yesssss do it
I might but wdym Burger King foot lettuce will have snacks?
That’s the name of the reaper there
Under water Island
Blood Kelp Zone
Last playthrough I had a base in the Grand Reef because it was close to the Lost River and the Blood Kelp Trench
