TL;DR
Initial Care After Getting a Perm
The initial care of your perm is crucial. It's generally recommended not to wash your hair for at least 48 to 72 hours after getting a perm to allow the curls to set properly [1:1]
[2:1]. While you shouldn't wash it, wetting your hair slightly and using leave-in conditioner can help redefine and moisturize the curls without disrupting them
[4:1].
Washing and Conditioning
When it comes to washing, it's best to limit how often you shampoo your hair. Some suggest washing only once a week [2:1], while others recommend every other day with a focus on conditioning rather than shampooing
[1:3]. If you work out frequently and need to wash more often, consider diluting your shampoo with water to reduce its harshness
[5:2]. Opt for sulfate-free shampoos and moisturizing conditioners to maintain the health of your curls
[5:2]
[5:3].
Styling Products and Techniques
Using products specifically designed for curly hair is essential. Curling mousse applied to damp hair can help define curls, and a diffuser attachment on a blow dryer can enhance volume without causing frizz [1:1]. Avoid brushing your perm as it can lead to frizziness; instead, use a wide-toothed comb or simply finger-comb your hair
[3:2].
Moisturizing and Refreshing Curls
Keeping your curls moisturized is key to maintaining their shape and preventing frizz. Regularly apply a leave-in conditioner or a curl cream to keep your hair hydrated [4:1]. To refresh curls during the day, scrunch in some leave-in conditioner or water mixed with a bit of regular conditioner
[4:1].
Additional Considerations
If you plan to wear hats, be mindful that they might flatten your curls. It's also important to experiment with different products and techniques to find what works best for your specific hair type and lifestyle [1:2]. Consulting with your hairstylist for personalized advice can also be beneficial.
Don’t wash your hair too often, try every other day and use curling mousse. Apply it on damp hair and blow dry it with a diffuser attachment on low heat and speed. And don’t try to „rub“ your hair dry with a towel after washing , just gently press out the water with it. Hope I could help a little. That’s how I treat my perm…
Okay, thank you. I’ve been washing it with just conditioner every day and using a deep conditioner every third while using a gel for styling (gel isn’t great, though).
You will have to try out several products and styling methods until you get the right one for you. And I think you don’t need to use conditioner that often. If you’re really insecure about the maintenance, just ask your hairdresser
Oh and don’t dry them completely with the blow dryer, leave them a little moisture otherwise they could look frizzy
I got a perm last week, already made the mistake of only waiting one day after getting it instead of 2-3. It has relaxed a bit since I first got it, and I'm scared that my hair will go back to being straight. I usually shampoo and condition my hair every other hair, should I do it less?
I just read your post and looked it up because I was curious and the consensus seems to be wash it only once a week, and when you get it done, wait 48 hours before your first wash.
I've never had one before, but I thought it might help you!
I have straight, thick brown hair, and lots of it. I prefer to not do anything with my hair because it's too much work, so I've decided to perm my hair to go with the messy curls vibe. I want to hear any tips or good (or bad) experiences other people have encountered so I know what I'm getting myself into. I did it once when I was like 10, but I don't remember much about the after-care or how to treat it once I've permed it. What advice can you give me about it?
Use curly hair products because your hair has been physically changed to a curly texture! I have straight hair and got a digital perm, kept up with my straight hair routine and it destroyed my hair. Started using products meant for curly hair and it worked! Also never brush your perm, use a wide toothed comb and try and avoid brushing (especially in the beginning month or so)
I had it done many years ago and enjoyed it very much. What I remember most is that it took so many hours to do!
Elle Woods told us that the first cardinal rule of perm maintenance is that you're forbidden to wet your hair for the first 24 hours after getting a perm at the risk of deactivating the ammonium thioglycolate. That and happy people just don't go around killing people.
Hi! I had a perm done today and I love it. I have some follow up questions that I didn’t think to ask the stylist.
I understand I shouldn’t wash it for 3 days. But can I wet it?
Also, is there a trick to freshening the curls during the day? It was windy here and now I feel like my hair needs brushed. But if I brush it, it will not look good, right? It looks a somewhat snarled. Thanks!
Yes you can wet it. Add leave in conditioner and/or or a little regular hair conditioner to your hair and scrunch. It will redefine the curl and moisturize it as well
Thank you! I didn’t see your response until now.
Hi guys, I recently got my hair permed and I was wondering how do I maintain it? I was browsing on the reddit and other forums and they say try to not wash as much. However, I work out quite a lot so I need to wash my hair. I got a wavy perm. I’ve been washing in cold water and towel drying it. Please let me know what I can do thanks! First time perming my hair as a guy so please bear with me. Also I was wondering if I can wear a hat just for days I just feel like wearing a hat.
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS)
Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate
Sodium Myreth Sulfate
Sodium Coco-Sulfate
Ammonium Laureth Sulfate
Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate
Ethyl PEG-15 Cocamine Sulfate
Use them every 2-3 weeks only to wash.
Thank you for your help I am thinking about using the L'Oreal Paris Ever Curl conditioner and Shampoo I was wondering is this a good brand?
They have silicones so every time you use them, you would be force to use stronger detergents. But you train so you have to shampoo often. I would suggest any of those shampoos: Cantu cleansing cream shampoo or shea moisturize curl and shine. Those are the cheapest. You can use them more often. Conditioners:Shea Moisture Jamaican Black Castor Oil Strengthen & Restore Treatment Masque, Suave Essentials Conditioner Tropical Coconut, Tresemme Botanique Nourish & Replenish Conditioner, Shea Moisture Organic Raw Shea Butter Restorative Conditioner, Cantu Avocado hydrating Conditioner, Cantu hydrating cream conditioner...
Basically all Cantu conditioners are ok. and co-wash is good because is very delicate for every day use and you can skip mask. But once a week you have to use some mask and other shampoo to really clean your scalp.
My hair is naturally wavy. I usually fade the sides and perm the top to be curly at the salon. Now that the salon I go to is closed indefinitely. Any way to give myself a perm at home?
Hello do you have snapchat or something I have a question
so i got a perm 3 days ago and i cant find an answer anywhere as to whether or not its okay to wet your hair everyday if you have a perm. i plan on washing it once a week with shampoo, but i was wondering if its okay to get it wet whenever i hopped in the shower. would applying conditioner everyday be okay too? thanks!
I’ve had permed hair and was in competitive swimming which required washing my hair daily, so daily rinsing with fresh water should be perfectly fine. I always made a point to use a leave-in conditioner and deep condition regularly and my hair was very healthy.
Stylist here... you can wet it and style it with product, but don't wash for at least 48 hours. You said you're at 3 days so you're good. If you run into trouble styling, look into the curly girl method styling techniques. You can use conditioner in between washes to keep it moisturized , but shampooing once a week should be good. Perms tend to dry it out. If your products are silicone free use a sulfate free shampoo, but It would be good to use a sulfate shampoo 1 or 2 times a month to help remove product build up. However, if your products or conditioner contain silicones, you should be using a sulfate shampoo period so that the silicones don't cause build up
ahhh help no one told me i wasnt allowed to wash my hair 48 hours after the perm, so i washed with regular shampoo and conditioner. My hair is now decently wavy, but what should i do to keep it that way? should i wash my hair less, maybe once a week? whats going to happen to my hair ahhh
ooo i didnt know that abt sulfate free shampoo. ill definitely be aware of whats in my hair products so i know what to pick up. thank you!
As long as you treat your permed hair with care ( it has been through a lot to get to that result), wetting and conditioning is fine.
Generally the ‘do not wet perm’ is for the first 24-72 hrs to avoid damage to the hair fibers right after the perm process.
thank you so much!! i actually followed the whole curly girl method like plopping, brushing only when wet, stuff like that
Elle Woods drilled this into my head
Lol
Came here just to see if someone made this comment.
When you get a perm, you aren't supposed to wash it for 2 days, it will relax the curls. After that it's perfectly fine to wet your hair. If you are using a blow dryer, use a diffuser so your hair doesn't become frizzy.
Yeah, but can rinse it with water everyday without demageing my hair?
If it’s a loose perm I would wait at least 24 hours. But after that you can. Just scrunch it with a towel real good. It will curl back up.
I originally had pin-straight, fine Asian hair, but I recently got a perm(wavy, just to add volume - attached pic below) to add volume since my hair was always so flat. Now, I’m having a really hard time maintaining it—it’s drier, frizzier, and more tangled than eve
Some context:
Does anyone have recommendations for products (shampoo, conditioner, hair oil, heat protectant) that can help with hydration, frizz control, and maintaining the waves? Any advice on maintaining permed hair would be greatly appreciated!
I can’t see the picture, just a black box, anyone else having this issue or is this a me thing?
I can see it now in the comments and the post, thanks!
I’d kill for your hair honestly. That said, I really like doing a Keratin protein mask, K18 or Olaplex 8 for smoothing my chemical treated hair.
I can see it. Your hair looks beautiful. I would recommend jojoba oil for hair nourishment. Life is like a chess game one wrong move on your hair, and you’ve lost the game. Good luck!!
With perms, I have to make the initial perm curlier than I wanted so it will relax to the desired curl.
Do you have advice on what to say to the stylist to achieve this JW. Idk if perms have a size?
I only have had my hair permed once and I don't know how to look after it i have a bonnet and diffuser but after that I'm lost can anyone help?
Good product for a cast , gell and mouse , after dry add a curl cream to finish the look when you break the cast
Depends on your hair type. I have fine dense hair. I wash 2-3x a week with the kirsten ess regular shampoo. I apply conditioner (sane brand) and let it sit then I comb and detangle it with a wet brush and rinse the conditioner out. I then squeeze water out and apply a leave in conditioner and put it a wrap for a few minutes. I use a pick to loosely detangle it then apply curlsmith curl cream and Maui moisture curl foam and brush with the BounceCurl define brush and scrunch. I usually air dry. If I can’t, use a diffuser. My curls look better air dried. In the morning I refresh with EveNYC refresh spray or curlsmith refresh spray and apply either EveNYC or curlsmith wave spray. Between washes I use kirsten ess dry shampoo, usually at bedtime. I don’t use a bonnet. I use a silk pillowcase.
I’ve permed my hair multiple times so I just wanted to share some tips and advice. FYI my natural hair is stick straight and coarse. I’ve permed it when it was 3-4 inch long and 6-7 in long.
Basics: -DO NOT wash or get it wet for at least 48 hours -DO NOT comb it for at least 48 hours -Avoid using pullover hoodies/sweatshirts for the first two days -Sleep with a silk or satin cap to avoid friction between your hair and pillow
Hair care: Your hair will be really dried out after the perm since it’s a chemical process. To tame frizz and dryness, you need to add moisturizing products to your hair
-Use a bond builder like olaplex no 3 or curlsmith rehab salve twice a week pre shampoo to make your hair healthier -Shampoo only 2 or 3 times a week -Consider using a co-wash (type of shampoo with less abrasive soap and more moisturizing components) -Use a deep conditioner after every shampoo and let it sit in your hair for at least 15 min before rinsing -use a moisture mask once a week -Use a leave in conditioner -Use a penetrating hair oil to restore moisture and tame frizz
I found that this using all of the above really rehabilitated my hair to a more healthy state after about 2-3 weeks. You should also use products made for curly hair. My fav brand is Curlsmith but a more affordable brand is SheaMoisture.
For styling, I’ve used everything under the sun from the curly girl method to the bucket method and found it all too complicated and time consuming. What we worked for me was simply getting my hair wet, using a leave in conditioner, and scrunching in some mousse afterwards. After my hair dried, I would run my fingers through my curls to “break the cast” but be aware this doesn’t work for everyone. I was only able to do this after a few weeks of using routine mentioned above. It could make your hair more frizzy.
Hey just had my first perm done, I'm leaving it now till 2 days time then il wash it carefully is that OK? And should I use a split end oil for my perm
Can you give me like a weekly what to do?
I was thinking
Monday deep clean wash with leave in con Tuesday dry shampoo (oil? Leave in??) Wed dry shampoo (oil? Leave in??) Thursday - regular wash with leave in conditioner Friday dry shampoo (oil? Leave in??) Sat - regular wash with leave in conditioner Sunday - dry shampoo (oil? Leave in??)
It’s long after the post but how often/how much did you cut off for hair maintenance/trims to cut off dead ends
So the first 48 hours Im probably gonna have frizzy hair and look like a douchebag right
i really hope that’s the case for everyone because I just got a perm, and I look like an IDIOT
And? does it look good now?
can i mist with water or use oil to refresh in the first few days
How to maintain a perm
Key Considerations for Maintaining a Perm
Wait Before Washing: Avoid washing your hair for at least 48 hours after getting a perm to allow the curls to set properly.
Use Sulfate-Free Shampoo: Opt for sulfate-free shampoos and conditioners to prevent stripping the hair of moisture and to help maintain curl definition.
Moisturize Regularly: Use a deep conditioner or hair mask weekly to keep your hair hydrated and healthy, as perms can dry out hair.
Avoid Heat Styling: Limit the use of heat styling tools like flat irons and curling wands, as they can damage the curls and lead to frizz.
Gentle Drying Techniques: Pat your hair dry with a microfiber towel instead of rubbing it, and consider air-drying or using a diffuser on a low heat setting.
Regular Trims: Schedule regular trims every 6-8 weeks to remove split ends and maintain the shape of your curls.
Protect from Chlorine and Saltwater: Wear a swim cap when swimming or rinse your hair with fresh water before entering a pool or ocean to minimize damage.
Recommendation: Incorporate a leave-in conditioner or curl cream specifically designed for permed hair to enhance and define your curls while providing additional moisture. This will help maintain the look and feel of your perm over time.
