TL;DR: Initiate the return process through your order history, print the provided shipping label, and drop off the item at the designated location. Contact customer service if issues arise.
Initiating the Return Process
To begin a return on Amazon, navigate to your order history, locate the item you wish to return, and select "return or replace item" [1:1]. This will guide you through the steps necessary to complete the return. If you're using the Amazon app, click the three bars on the left side, go to "your orders," select the item, and then choose "return item"
[2:1].
Shipping and Drop-off Options
Amazon typically provides a prepaid shipping label for returns. You can print this label and affix it to your package before dropping it off at a UPS location [1:4]. In some cases, depending on your location, UPS may pick up the item directly from your home
[2:3]. Ensure you follow the instructions provided during the return process to avoid any charges.
Dealing with Third-party Sellers
If the item was purchased from a third-party seller, you might need to contact them directly for return instructions [1:7]. Amazon often manages customer service for third-party sellers, but it's important to verify whether the seller provides a prepaid shipping label or if you'll need to cover shipping costs initially and seek reimbursement
[4:2].
Handling Issues and Delays
Sometimes, returns can encounter delays or complications, such as not receiving a refund promptly [5:1]
[5:6]. If you face such issues, contacting Amazon's customer service and requesting to speak with a supervisor can be beneficial
[4:3]. Be persistent in following up if refunds are delayed or incorrect charges occur
[5:4].
Return Policies and Considerations
Amazon has conditioned customers to expect easy returns, which is integral to their business model [3:1]
[3:10]. However, understanding their policies and ensuring compliance with return criteria is crucial, especially when dealing with third-party sellers
[5:12]. If an item is past the return date, contacting the manufacturer might be necessary
[1:5].
In summary, returning items on Amazon involves navigating the order history, using the provided shipping label, and potentially dealing with third-party sellers. Persistence with customer service is key if issues arise during the return process.
Sorry if this isn't the place to post. There isn't much of a story. I bought a vinyl record from a company off Amazon (didn't have prime and didn't wanna pay $6 extra dollars just for shipping) it said it was new but it didn't even come with a case like it was pictured. Just the record in a scratched up plastic sleeve. How do I return this?
Contact the seller. They should have instructions.
Do I click "contact sell" or the "request a return"?
You want a return. Use that.
Go to your order history, find the item, and there will be a box on the right "return or replace item" to begin the return process.
Click that.
I tried that but it says "UPS Dropoff $0.00" do I have to ship it first then complete the return?
> I tried that but it says "UPS Dropoff $0.00"
That just means return shipping is free if you drop it off at a UPS location.
Complete the process and it will provide you a shipping label to print out and affix to the box so you are not charged for shipping when you drop it off.
what happens if its passed the return by date, two months after purchase a camera I bought from there died?
> what happens if its passed the return by date, two months after purchase a camera I bought from there died?
Then you contact the manufacturer.
Depends on your location. When I return stuff they tell me to just leave it outside my house and UPS will pick it up and they already have a shipping label. I don't have to go anywhere.
It says there's a return shipping code I need but I'm not sure how to get that
In the app: click the three bars on the left side, your orders, the item you want to return, then return item. After that you fill out why and if it’s something bought from a seller you might have to talk to them but if it’s from prime/amazon just take it to ups and print out a return label and they’ll figure it out for you.
I recently posted on here venting about Amazon's broken-ass return system. A good number of comments were people sharing that they experienced something similar..
There was also a good number of comments asking "why am I returning so many things?" Or telling me to write it off as a loss. I never stated I was returning a lot of items often.
It is not wrong to return things that didn't work out. If you decide it's not worth your time, that's OK too. But shaming people for returning items is not normal.
There's a difference between abusing returns and just being a normal fucking human. There was a thread on Reddit about a woman that was buying clothing from Costco in large quantities (creating artificial scarcity), selling them online, and returning whatever didn't sell. She was banned from returning clothing at Costco. That was abuse.
I believe this "return shaming" is mostly Amazon/online sellers trying to normalize not returning items because it's bad for their profits. If you fit this description, fuck you.
Amazon is only worth it for the returns.
Otherwise I wouldn’t use Amazon at all.
Sorry if that triggers someone.
Right. You can literally buy the same item at Target or Walmart and they give you zero hassle over returning it if it doesn't work out. Most of the time, they don't even ask. If I'm going to wait 2 days for an item already and it doesn't work out, I'm going to return it. If returning stuff starts being a total hassle, then I have no reason to buy things on Amazon. 3rd party sellers trying to get in on the online shopping boom, but dont like being treated the same way a store does. You can't have all the benefits of a major entity like Amazon selling your stuff without the downside of people actually not liking your product and sending it back.
As long as Amazon allows the return, then everyone is playing by the rules.
Sellers need to do their own homework and decide if it’s worth it for them. If it is, it is. If it’s not, it’s not.
Not the buyers problem.
Walmart’s return policy is also usually 90 days. Target’s is also generous, especially for Target-brand items.
Exactly. Period. I'd cancel my prime if Amazon did anything to change the return policy for worse.
I'm a frequent Amazon returner. In the olden days I used to go to a brick and mortar store and try on a bunch of dresses and shoes. The stores are all gone now. I'm more careful ordering from Amazon than what I would try on but still you aren't likely to get it right on the first try.
Amazons return process sucks. I ordered something form a 3rd party seller and received the wrong items. I returned them to a drop off location and was told I would receive my refund within 2-3 hours.
I just wanted the gift card balance back so I could reorder what I needed. Well, after the funds never showed up I was told that I had to wait until the items actually shipped back to a facility before my funds could be released. Also that it could take up to 14-30 days.
I got on customer support and called 3 times, with them all saying the same thing. I called back a 4th time and asked to speak with a supervisor, and told them I’m not getting off the phone until they process my refund and sent me a confirmation email. Needless to say, I got that money back within 2-3 hours.
If they say they can’t refund you yet, they are straight up liars. They will if you demand it.
3 party sellers scare me 🤣 I’ve never purchase from one and I think that may be why I’ve never returned anything. Many of them seem like scammers/drop shippers.
You’re missing the point. Amazon created, fostered, and touted the simply ease of doing all these things from purchase to returns for over 15 years.
They have every right to change those terms but they need to be transparent about them. If they do not want to deal with returns then update their published customer facing policies about No returns etc.
Every business will encounter people that abuse the process. That’s what is known as cost of doing business. Nothing to do with entitled this entitled that nonsense.
They literally created a program called Try Before you Buy. Returns being integral to that system.
Amazon sellers should stop sending the wrong and/or broken fucking item then.
Returns are a normal cost of doing business. If Amazon doesn’t want returns then implement that new policy. They conditioned the customer for many years about convenience etc versus conventional brick and mortar with their great processes. Now they want to take all that back by making it more and more challenging to return items. Honestly they really suck nowadays.
Long-time Amazon Prime customer here. I have been caught in a strange refund vortex with Amazon with no end in sight.
Just wondering if this happened because it was a third party seller. Not excusing the actions, just trying to wrap my head around.
I think that is definitely a big part of it. And there seems to be a deeper problem with their central information system about processing refunds and tracking CS calls. This should have been a non-issue.
My suggestion, which may no longer be viable or you might have done it before, is to ask for a supervisor since it looks like the regular agents were running around in circles and some of them might have straight out lied.
Supervisors aren't gods and a few might be bad, but they will typically help you as much as possible if you give them a fair shot, even if the outcome isn't exactly what you would want.
Of course - it is an honest return. But two things concerned me. 1) my return is delayed. 2) I’m curious if this return criteria message is a general one that is sent to everyone or if it was specifically sent to me. If so, I need to call and ask to speak to a different department.
That literally pops up for people they expect are being sus. So they’re warning you if they don’t get what they sold you best believe you ain’t getting that refund
I had to keep bothering them and even went thru PayPal since Amazon didn’t refund me for 3 almost 4 months. This was my 2nd time returning anything. Cause usually I buy to keep buy this item was the wrong size.
Common topic here, but it sucks when you personally hand over a return item to a checkpoint, face-to-face, and get it scanned in, only for Amazon to later deduct their refund from you for not receiving the return.
It’s such a garbage situation. I’ve never hesitated buying from Amazon, but now I am. Thank you
I've had amazon receive the product. Confirmed, but them the software said it was charging me as they didn't recieve it.
I spoke with a worthless cs rep that said he will take care of the issue.
Two weeks later, I get a charge for the item. Had to go around again and finally got the charge removed and refund for a broken product.
I’ve never received this message on a return before, have you made a lot of returns recently?
I have-ish. I’d say about 5 returns recently - all legitimate. I never thought it would be an issue, as long as the item hasn’t been used, etc.. ugh
Yes for the last 4 months I had 3 returns and every single one of them was delayed and I had to call in after thr 30 days period is over to get a refund.
I went down a rabbit hole of legitimate return issues, so ….
I couldn’t remember if I had gotten this message before or not, but never a delay in my refund. Thank you so much!
I seen this before, but I make a lot of purchases on Amazon. Sometimes a lot of small items, like deodorant, toothpaste etc... Because it's easier than shopping at Wal-Mart. Which is never just what I need lmao.
The past couple of returns Amazon asked me to pay for shipping myself and they will only refund up to $3.99! I said no, shipping is between $10 and $20 at the very least because you need tracking to prove you even returned it. I had to complain to customer service (after convincing the AI to send me to them for 10 minutes) to get them to replace the product that arrived heavily damaged. They’re a multibillion dollar corporation with insurance and underwriters. They can go after the shipper who bungled the shipping or the manufacturer who sent them a broken product to recoup costs of returns. Even if they paid the extra few dollars to cover shipping, Jeff is not going broke tomorrow. Total BS they’re making us do the leg work and covering all the costs for damaged and defective products. It’s not OUR fault. We paid full price for something new, unused, undamaged.
Update: Per Amazon’s return policy as of 2024 they will refund qualifying purchases the return shipping up to $20, but you need to contact customer service. Also, Amazon is apparently nudging customers towards Whole Foods or Kohl’s for free returns, I’m thinking because it’s cheaper to bulk ship it back to their return processing centers. But ain’t no way am I driving to town to return a broken lamp that’s cracked into one million pieces.
I have a $9.99 item. I just did a test return.
It's giving me free return shipping if I dropoff at Whole Foods or UPS. Not sure what you're buying but return shipping depends entirely on whether you buy from "Amazon.com" purchases or third parties.
OP also said they return multiple items per month. Which is wild to me. That might have triggered a limitation on their account for excess returns.
Yeah. I've had occasions where I've had to return multiple things in a row (i.e. I was trying to find something that was the correct fit for something) but if this is a monthly thing I'm sure that set off something on Amazon's side.
Most of the time when I return it's almost always free. I noticed the more expensive stuff that's like $100-$200 or more require you to actually pay for your own shipping back (I had to do this with a wireless headset).
Just curious, what/why are you returning so often? I can count on one hand the number of times I've returned things to Amazon in the last decade.
Every return I did has been a full refund. Was your item fulfilled by Amazon or by a 3rd party? That might be where the issue lies. If it’s fulfilled and returns handled by Amazon it’s always a full refund (at least in my experience).
Yup, Amazon fulfilled. I learned my lesson a few years ago and never bought from third party again. It’s only been just last week that I was able to return several items for free, and now this week for two items they asked me to ship it myself and I’ll be refunded for shipping $3.99. I was like, what? Since when? Looking at the page I realized the verbiage is different from the usual. It says “free 30 day refund/replacement” rather than “free returns.” I’m hoping this is just a one or two off thing instead of the new norm.
We make generous use of their return policy, but always do it via UPS or Whole Foods. We also try very hard to avoid third party shippers, because they make it much more difficult to return.
Either stop buying things, stop returning things, or find a way to get to the whole foods FFS.
Why would Amazon want to keep you as a customer? You are incredibly low value to them and a massive PITA.
How often are you returning items to Amazon?
Just last week dude returned "several" items, from another reply
Their quality has really tanked. If they shipped fewer garbage items, fewer items would need returning.
Just take it to Whole Foods.
has anyone ever returned a package back to Amazon?
i’ve never returned a package before.
I have made multiple returns. They usually just send me a USPS label, paste it on a box and drop it off at USPS. Once it scans on the system, I get my refund which is cool.
I did too. When was the last time you ordered? Bc the last 2 times I needed to return they could not produce a link for USPS label. Last time was a month ago. I ordered 5 evening gowns for army ball. Intention was to send back 4. In the end they refunded me but told me to keep them. Cost was over 300. And the time before that was in February and it was a swim suit. Same thing. Couldn’t produce the link for usps label so they told me keep it and they refunded me. All the things I purchase are returnable and I have prime. So I don’t know what’s going on. I even have a follow up email from customer service about the issue.
I order stuff from Amazon almost on a weekly basis, my last order was yesterday.
My last return was bout 2 months ago. I always try to connect to an agent cause their AI Chat is dumb as bricks. The sent me a USPS label instantly.
I returned three orders, the last one I did was last year. Tamuning post office required I still complete a customs form, and I can’t remember if I used the shipping label Amazon provided or just wrote the address on the box myself. I still had to pay for shipping and only got $5 refund since the item being broken was my fault. But if the item being returned can still be used, you have to hope the cost to ship is less than how much you’ll be refunded.
If previous poster says you can’t cuz UPS is required then I dunno what else.
I used to bc they had the choice of sending usps. That was last year. Now it’s now a choice for a return. Only choice is UPS. I tried talking them and telling them we don’t have UPS and just go round and round. It actually happened twice. I thought first time it was a fluke or that particular item. Turns out they told me to keep all the clothes I had ordered the second time. Evening dresses. Over 300 bucks. Been here almost two years. They said they are trying to work it out but so far they haven’t. So. Best of luck.
We have UPS. It's processed through JL Bakers.
They won’t process it. They need international shipping label and Amazon won’t/can’t produce one. Trust me. I’ve spent cumulatively hours on the phone.
Many times. Yeah. Usually that happens when you buy refurbished stuff and stuff, and you should never accept a subpar product. Some sellers on eBay sell a crappy product, and expect you not to return because of the hassle. It just incentivizes those types of people to keep on doing that kind of thing.
I bought a stroller from Amazon, but they sent me a car seat instead. I had to pay $153 to return it via USPS. They only refunded $150 of the return shipping cost (as per their policy), along with the cost of the item.
I have to ship my return??? Most of the products are becoming non-returnable also. Half the allure of ordering from Amazon was easy returns and good customer service. Now returns are gone and it's so difficult to reach customer service. Mostly pre recorded response dead ends.
This is the norm in US. They ask you to return it to a shipping company (most of the time UPS) although it’s paid by amazon you still have to drop it off at a store.
Wtf? When did this happen? Why tf would I incur the cost and inconvenience of sending it back of the seller or amazon fucked up.
It's always this way.
Either OP lives somewhere remote, and Amazon shipping services are not available there.
Or sellers use shipping services like Indian Post. Indian Post doesn't have a pickup and return thing in place. Also you will get refund of upto Rs.100 for shipping charges.
Usually in western countries, they provide shipping labels. You just have to print it and ship using that label which is already paid by amazon
I was waiting for my return to be picked up. But it's been many days. Now I saw this. Wtf.
It’s always the case in foreign countries since it was India and it was some new concept and people are cheap they had to to the returns as well but since Indians are now addicted slowly they are removing this practice and Flipkart too , like they charge amount for return like 50-100 or sometimes more than that, other reason is people used to order use it and then return it next day so to avoid this cheap move that had to take this step
So it was a temporary disruption and offline shopping will rise again.
No it will not , but returns will drastically decrease now zomato charges extra but still people buy right its the drug first make people use to your product and then make services as per you becuase people will still buy it
Amazon sucks these days
That's why I check the return policy of every individual item. When I have any doubt I ask amazon customer support.
I had to ship wall lamp I ordered through amazon because it was broken. They issued refund after 15 days because seller didn't confirm he had received the return.
Anyways I don't remember exactly whether they pay back this shipping fees or not..
You can contact any courier service like DTDC.
Amazon has changed their return policy so that many items can now only be returned to “hubs” or you have to pay $8 via UPS. I live in NYC and it was easy to return to Whole Foods or Amazon stores. But now, everyday items have to be taken to hubs far outside the city.
Amazon has us hooked and will now get increasingly strict with returns. I think Prime is past its prime
They now let you return amazon items at the goodwill near my house, so convenient no more waiting in line at UPS.
Kohl's accepts returns, and you get a 15%off coupon, plus a tracking number.
I just returned a broken item, and my refund was back in my account the next day.
I was just at my local Kohl's today and they had a sign explicitly saying that they don't accept Amazon returns.
Be wary of Kohls returns. I had 3 separate items scanned in and returned there, and then Amazon charged me for them a month later saying they never received the return. Had to argue with Customer Service proving I returned the items and employees at Kohls lost or stole them.
Kohl's has stopped taking Amazon returns at some stores as part of a test. If my store stops taking them it will definitely lower how much I buy from Amazon. I'm not one of those people who returns an item often, but taking the ones I do return back to Kohl's and not having to rewrap it was very convenient.
Kohl's is phasing out Amazon returns at some of their locations. Big article on it. Said that they don't get enough business even with the 15% off coupon to justify the costs of staff.
Just returned something today the same way I always have 🤷♂️
Me too, a few days ago, for free, at UPS, AND my refund was in my acct in 3 hours.
I would be glad if they rolled out such a thing for people with a large amount of returns, which currently end up costing EVERYONE more.
I mean, I've returned many things to Amazon, no email. Never returned a single item to Walmart in my life and my online account and any accounts I try to make get banned for return abuse. So it might be rather specific to your case.
So, did you stop buying from Amazon?
Account specialist. Their policy hasn’t changed. Having specific stores to return stuff is based on the many things such as the item, account standing, third party seller, fraud at location etc etc. and far as I know in NYC these options are still available
I have an account with no major history for returns and a vacuum is faulty after 5 months. In the past, this would be a 'sorry, here's a return label and refund' but I'm increasingly getting a brick wall with 'it's outside the return window' and 'you'll have to get in touch with the manufacturer'.
The magical customer service seems to be slipping.
If it is faulty then manufactures's should send you a new vacuum What upsets me is that Amazon didNot send me any kind of notification, about there new return policies either, and I am a Prime Member !
I just started noticing this new policy a couple of weeks ago, this is November 17,2024, that they were charging me restocking fees and other fees . I am "guessing" why I never noticed it before is because I always bought things that worth more or because they didnot have high returns or just the opposite . I just looked it up and quickly skimmed through
Ingave to retirn some shoes that cost aroynd $150.00 . and I didnot notice from my iphone 12 Amazon app that they were not velcro type plus they are too small ! They are charging me a restocking fee and some other fee for the exvuse I didnot read the infirmatuon catefully. Even if I had read that they were not velcro strap maru jane type shoes they still were too small! I wear 8 1/2 medium in all of my shoes . These were 81/2 medoum also, but they fir like they were 7 1/2 medium Mary Jane style black patent leather shoes . I don't see how it is my fault that this company's sozing is totally different than all other shoe companies .
And what really upsets me is that they are not refunding to my credit card !! They are putting it on a gift card and I HATE that , I want my money back ! I am calling them back tomorrow and get this straightened out . Possibly telling them I will close my account.
After 30 days, it's the manufacturer's problem.
I agree aftee 30 days it is manufacturer's problem. and I have never heard of returning anything past 30 days .
Some seem to pressure customer service to do a late return then they wonder why they problems.
In your country sure
From what you are saying, yours as well. 🤷♂️
I’ve never been able to return anything after five months. It’s usually like 30 days, maybe extended a bit during the holidays for example. But at five months that’s kind of a warranty claim territory not return.
Amazon have a two year warranty on electrical products in my country so it doesn’t make sense.
Wow, warranty service through the seller? That’s pretty good. In the USA past your seller return period you have to go to the manufacturer for warranty service.
I agree. Plus they are making it increasingly difficult to find q codes etc. You just don't know where to look and there are no instructions. I'm almost finished with them and will deal only with manufacturers directly or I'll use eBay or Etsy. Eff bezos.
