How to Make Makeup Last All Day

TL;DR

  • Use a combination of primer, setting spray, and setting powder.
  • Layer products strategically and choose formulas suitable for your skin type.

Primers and Skin Preparation

A good primer is essential for long-lasting makeup. Many users recommend using a "grippy" primer that matches the base of your foundation (e.g., water-based with water-based) [3:1]. The Milk Makeup Hydro Grip Primer and Nyx Plump Right Back Primer are popular choices [3:4][5:9]. Prepping your skin properly by allowing skincare products like moisturizer and SPF to fully absorb before applying makeup can also enhance longevity [4:1].

Setting Sprays and Powders

Setting sprays are widely recommended to lock in makeup. Some users suggest spraying after each makeup step for maximum hold [1:2]. Popular setting sprays include Elf, Milani Make It Last, and Urban Decay's All Nighter [1:1][2:5][5:6]. Setting powders, especially translucent ones, are also crucial for setting makeup, particularly for oily skin types [5:3].

Layering Techniques

Layering products strategically can help maintain makeup throughout the day. A common technique involves applying a light layer of setting powder before foundation, followed by setting spray, foundation, another layer of setting powder, and finishing with setting spray again [2:1]. This "sandwich method" helps keep everything in place [3:1].

Product Recommendations

For those with oily skin, avoiding dewy finish sprays and opting for mattifying products can prevent makeup from breaking down [5:1]. Brands like Charlotte Tilbury and Skindinavia are noted for their effective setting sprays [2:2][3:3]. For cream products, setting them with a corresponding powder product can extend wear time [5:7].

Additional Tips

Blotting papers or brown paper napkins can be used to manage oil without disturbing makeup throughout the day [5:10]. For eye makeup, primers specifically designed for eyeshadow can prevent creasing and fading [2:4]. Lastly, choosing the right formula for your skin type, whether it's cream or powder, can significantly impact how well your makeup lasts [5:3].

For really long lasting application I will spray Elf setting spray after each makeup step.

Use blotting paper or setting powder on before your makeup primer and use a setting spray. I like the Milk matte version. Please don’t use hairspray on your face. Good luck!

Skin prep but like 1 hour before and if u have dry skin reapply a light gel based moisturizer or rose water even before you start putting on makeup. Oily T zone? Put lose powder there and then apply foundation, tap/massage ur moisturizer under the eye and smile lines really well

how to make makeup last longer

i’m very insecure w/o makeup and i HATE when it rubs off. Whenever my friends and I go to parties i get pretty frustrated when my makeup rubs off or sweats off easily. Or in general when i’m out and about my makeup tends to get oily and rubs off. What products should I use to make my makeup last longer ? any advice ?

Lightly powder your face before foundation. Also set your foundation with a strong setting spray. Skindinavia bridal spray is good. If you have a special occasion, some drag performers use green marble setting spray. It’s incredibly strong since they use it on stage while dancing. It’s sweat and oil proof, but smells strongly of alcohol. Definitely to be used sparingly

I always buy cheaper drugstore products, and I can't remember all the brands I've tried, but they all seemed to work pretty well. The one I'm currently using is NYX. I've heard really good things about the Urban Decay one too. I always have a problem with settling into creases and transferring without it, but primer fixes that!

Something that I do that makes my makeup last forever is 1) moisturizer/sunscreen 2) primer 3) light layer of setting powder 4) setting spray 5) foundation 6) setting powder and 6) setting spray. It sounds like a lot I know but I swear by it. Probably not the best for dry skin but i have oily skin and used to have bad acne and acne scars and this helped my skin also look super smooth. And I swear it doesn’t look cakey. Make sure to also use the same based products (water based moisturizer, primer and foundation or oil based) helps tremendously with the break up of make up.

What are your tips to making makeup last all day!?

Posted by byebobbyjean · in r/beauty · 16 days ago

Give me your best hacks for making makeup last. No matter the makeup I put on in the morning by the end of my workday, I look like I’m not wearing any makeup. I try to avoid touching my face, but even after putting on moisturizer, SPF, concealer, etc. I just look haggard and worn out by the end of the day, my eyes are bloodshot. Make up is nonexistent. I will take any tips!

Ive had moderate success (maybe 6 hours of makeup staying) with applying my foundation with a beauty blender thats been sprayed by setting spray, and then misting setting spray over my face at the end of the routine like normal (as a last step after a lightweight powder though i dont powder my whole face, personal preference to do just the t zone as i have dry skin) also make sure its an actual setting spray thats not just a “face spray” cause ive found alot of brands are coming iut with general hydrating facial sprays and then slapping a “sets makeup” claim on it despite having no ingredients that would work to set makeup. Ive heard good things about o/s brand and milk makeup or urban decay have had setting sprays for years now which makes me think they work well?

Ive also anecdotally found that my makeup applies better and my skin seems to keep the makeup on a bit longer when i dermaplane/shave the baby hair off my face. I use less skincare when i do that as the baby hairs really do absorb product make up included

I feel you on this though, makeup just seems to disappear on my skin! I would say using certain foundations with silicone might be helpful as they are not as fast absorbing. Also i think heavier/more full coverage lasts longer in my experience. Though Ive recently been layering a medium coverage foundation over a tinted sunscreen with no primer and it definitely doesnt last long as when i did full coverage. but thats ok cause my priority now is to reapply sunscreen throughout the day and if i did that it would mess up a full face of makeup. I think its just personal preference on that one!

Oh! And lastly i prefer cream blush but have been setting it with a powder blush lately in a similar shade and it helps alot with the blush staying! Same with bronzer

Yeah of course!

Mmm i have a few cream blushes i like mostly Cloud Paint (Glossier) but it doesnt last long so i put (unfortunately discontinued) kkw beauty powder blush but i also am a sucker for a nostalgic Maybelline Bouncey Blush if its still around ? I have Drunk Elephants liquid blush too. And Fenty Beauty has awesome powder blushes and highlighters i love their diamond highlighter

Just FYI- urban decay just reformulated their setting spray because the patented ingredient that makes it good isn't their own patent and they did not want to keep paging the patent company for it, so the new spray is actual trash. Patent company even released a statement that they didn't suddenly insanely up prices on UD or anything either UD just flipped a 180

The Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless Setting Spray works pretty well, spray it before and after makeup application. Also using tubing mascara has done wonders for making mascara last all day, unlike regular mascara!

When you say “before makeup application”, does this also include primer, or would you spray after primer? I usually spray after liquids/before powders and then at the end and my makeup usually lasts long enough, but I’m always up for trying new techniques and comparing :)

Milk makeup hydro grip primer makes my makeup last all day, and I get hot flashes so I really put it to the test! If I need extra staying power I use Nars setting powder, just a light dusting. I do not like any of the setting sprays I've tried, they all mess up my makeup.

Oh man, that end-of-day fade is the worst, especially in the humidity. Start with a grippy primer matched to your foundation (water-based with water-based) after your SPF absorbs fully, then layer setting spray between steps like foundation, concealer, and powder for that sandwich method lock-in. Use mattifying powders on oily zones and a dewy mist overall to keep it fresh without cracking, plus blot sheets mid-day instead of touching your face to refresh without smudging. For bloodshot eyes, a quick saline drop can perk 'em up, and if your base is oxidizing, a better shade match helps it stick longer. What's your skin type like?

Tips for long lasting make up.

Posted by Ooops14 · in r/Makeup · 3 months ago

Hello everyone ! I really need some tips for make up.

I’m (F29) not really good with makeup up. I never do anything extravagant because I simply don’t know how to do it. I’m more focused onto skincare. I usually just do contour, concealer, blush, light brown eyeshadow and mascara. Because I wake up at 5am to go to work i usually noticed that around 09am all my make up is gone. Like my skin is litteraly drinking the make up out of my face. Some Sephora sale advisors told me to apply the make up forever primer and the charlotte tilbury fixing spray before and after applying the make up but nothing is happening. And my blush last mostly 2h. As I work for a big fashion company I would like to be more elegant at work and not looking so tired. Thank you in advance for your help and sorry for my English.

I like to set concealer with a pressed powder with a brush, then loose powder with a powder puff, (Huda beauty for example) if I really want it to last. For cream blush and bronzer I set with a powder blush and bronzer to match the cream ones. I spray my makeup in between layers with a setting spray to eliminate cakiness. For eyeshadow to last, I like to use a cream eyeshadow like Mac paint pot.

Can I ask how much and what kind of skincare you use? Sometimes cream products separate when they come into contact with skincare that hasn’t dried down.

Also are you using any kind of powder? Primer and setting spray only go so far at locking in creams.

I buy my skincare directly in Korea, I do 2 trips a year. So my skincare is really focused on hydratation, collagen, peptides, retinol 2/3 times a week. My moisturizer is from Pyukan yul. For the powder I use Fenty, the transparent one. The mattifying powder.

I personally love the Nyx Dewy Setting Spray. I usually apply in between layers of makeup + at the end to finish. It may also be helpful to make sure that your skincare is fully absorbed before applying primer and other makeup. Having moisturized, clean skin is definitely important for longevity.

I have found that blush typically fades the fastest on me regardless, but I have definitely found cream blush to last better on my skin. I loooooooove the Kaja Cheeky Blush Stamp cream blush. Blends like a dream and lasts pretty well!

I’m definitely interested in what others will have to say as well on this. I may not have the best advice but I hope this helps!

How can I get my makeup to last all day?

Posted by reigndrops17 · in r/Makeup · 3 years ago

For some context, I generally have oily skin. My first step is usually to apply a cream primer and then the rest of my makeup (a cream concealer, powder blush, eyeliner etc). I tend not to use foundation unless I'm doing makeup for a big event. For the first few hours, my makeup will look great but after about 4 hours, I'll notice that my concealer will start to fade and I don't know how to stop this from happening without having to reapply a new layer.

Does it sound like I'm using the wrong products for my skin type or are there any specific techniques I should follow to ensure my makeup lasts longer? I'd really appreciate any tips you guys have :)

I use a setting spray (skip the dewy ones they don’t actually help the longevity of your makeup and don’t work well with oily skin) after I apply a grippy primer, then I use it again after my concealer and foundation are applied. Powder is kinda my nemesis but it works for a lot of people so you should try a translucent setting powder after the setting spray here.

The formula of your concealer could also be the problem. The hydrating elf concealer never wears well on me no matter what I try. Same with maybelline fit me. Unfortunately the only concealers that work for me are tarte shape tape and nars formulas. I’ve been on the hunt for a good drugstore concealer for years 🥲

This sounds like something that could work for me, especially the use of both setting spray and a setting powder to really make sure everything stays in place. I'm usually hesitant to use setting sprays because I'm always afraid that it will counteract the effect it's meant to have because my skin is oily. But, noted. No dewey sprays for sure.

Do you by any chance have any recommendations for grippier primers? I can't seem to find the right ones.

You're probably right about the concealer. The thing is it's the only one I've come across that is actually right for my skintone, so I've kind of just stuck with it through the years.

Recently I’ve been using the nyx plump right back primer and it’s surprisingly really nice. I’ve been enjoying it and plan on repurchasing. Check that one out and if it doesn’t work for you, you’ll at least get an idea of the texture you’re looking for as far as grippy primers go.

Creams don’t last as long on oily skin because your oils break it down faster. If you really want to stick with creams, use a oily skin primer to create a barrier between your makeup and skin oils. add setting powder to your routine.

3 upvotes on reddit
R
reigndrops17 · OP · 3 years ago

I figured. The thing is, it's taken me a long time to find the perfect shade for my skin tone and it just so happens to be a cream formula, so that's what I've stuck to.

This is great to know though. I didn't realise you could get primers for specific skin types so I'll definitely be trying this combination (along with setting powder).

If they don't work as well as I'd like them to, I guess the only thing left to do would be to use a different formula of concealer. But at least I have a better idea on what the issue is now, so, thank you so much!

Tricks that make your makeup look fresher/last longer?

Posted by yOhstory · in r/beauty · 1 month ago

As someone who wears makeup 5 out of 7 days a week, who plays sport with it on as well, I need some new tips that help me look as fresh as I did when I started the day off.

Some things that I found to have helped are: I started using more layers of moisturizer, and less of primer, and found that my makeup looker smoother throughout the day. Leaving products like stick bronzers that pilled and switching to liquid bronzers helped me look less cakey too.

What are some tricks that make your makeup look fresher AND last longer all day long?

Underpainting is the way. Stain on cheeks, bronze balm, spot conceal then setting powder under eyes, t zone and tap a layer over face with a big brush. Then go back and add powder bronzer, a cream blush, eyebrow gel and eye makeup using an eyeshadow primer. Then drench whole face in setting spray and wait to dry. I can keep my makeup on through a whole day of work and two sweaty hours of tennis like this. I don’t like wearing foundation everyday and with this technique you don’t need to.

The MUA Wayne Goss foundation trick: you add one drop of (I use Argan) oil and mix it into your foundation and it goes on looking so fresh and covers so well. And I have incredibly oily skin and it never makes my skin oily.

Is there an alternative to argon oil?

To my memory Wayne Goss said any oil will due. I happened to have already had the Josie Maran brand of Argan oil. She’s the one that introduced it to the higher end cosmetic market and has a whole line of excellent products in a line based on her sourcing and refinement of this core ingredient. Hers is better but costlier and I won’t be able to afford it in the future.

I have no other experiences with other oils good to use on the face. As any will do for this tip do you mind if I ask which you are planning to use and why?.

I struggle with the same thing and would find my makeup flaking or cracking as well not even an hour after applying. I have a whole thing prepared so I apologize for the paragraph:

Def take time to do skin prep, use a toner and serum that suits ur skin type, let ur skincare sit in for a bit. I use less or no primer like u said. The key is not to pile all ur makeup up and instead try to stretch out the coverage with less product to prevent the cakeiness.

I don’t use foundation since I break out but I do use bb cream and concealer. I do color corrector under my eyes for my dark circles and then place thin layers of small spots of concealer over the blemishes and acne that I need to cover on my face. Let it dry for a few minutes and then blend with my clean finger. I tried using brushes and sponges for my base step but the heat from my hand just helps everything melt together better and look more natural on my face.

Then I put a bit of bb cream with my finger on my bigger areas like cheeks and forehead for places that need more coverage.

I put cream blush and bronzer, go in with contour and then go over the cream blush and bronzer with powder blush and bronzer. Setting spray every step helps to melt my makeup together and set it. I use the Milani one since it’s not expensive and I don’t mind using a good amount of it.

I also keep my mascara in my pocket or somewhere warm on my body so it comes out smooth. I put my eyeliner, lip liner and lippies, and press powder into + bake under the eye and oily areas with my huda powder since I get quite oily especially if I’m sweating.

Lastly my fav product ever to seal it all in is the one size setting spray. If I had to pick one thing out of all of the things I mentioned this is the thing that keeps my makeup on all day. I’ve gone through five bottles. It mattifies and keeps my makeup all day even with just three sprits!!

Not sure if any of these will be helpful for u but I wish u gl on finding a solution 🥹

Permanent eyeliner has changed my makeup game. I finally feel confident enough to go out without makeup. A combination of that and IPL has really given me confidence no matter whether I’m dolled up with blush, shadow, and lipstick or not. I highly recommend both rather than always trying to reapply.

Intense pulsated laser, I think is what it stands for. It's a wand that gives you snaps of a laser but it diminishes redness, discoloration, scars, and veins. A much more even tone. There's a more advanced version called BBL.... broad something laser? Not sure.... but I haven't tried it yet so I can't swear by it.

Tips to ensure your makeup lasts a long time?

Posted by Gacha_SY · in r/Makeup · 5 months ago

For context, I have an event in less than a week that lasts from 9 in the morning till 6 in the evening for two consecutive days. It will be physical, meaning a ton of sweating, plus its very hot and humid where i live. Adding on, i have very oily skin.

So, with these little tidbits, does anyone maybe have some advice they could spare?

(Ps: if you have advice for just ensuring that foundation lasts, thats already great since i dont use a large variety of makeup and foundation is one of the most crucial steps in my look.)

Start with a mattifying primer or setting spray. Apply your foundation and all your creams, then setting spray again. Then powders, and potentially setting spray a third time. And so on, you get the idea.

This is assuming you're using a normal setting spray and not one of the super powerful "hairspray for your face" ones like the OneSize. In that case you probably don't need so many layers.

MUA trick use rice blotting paper as primer before foundation.

Use long wearing foundation. Estee Lauder will give you 10 day sample supply for free if you go to store Nordstrom, Dillard's, Macy's and ask for color match. Double wear sheer is great or original double wear

Exfoliate face day before event. Dead skin cell build up means foundation attaches fo dead skin cells and when body naturally sheeds them, your foundation deteriorates faster.

Also just started w Elf primer and finishing spray. Any favorite long lasting mascaras? Any other recs? Thanks!

Make sure that you are setting your face with powder (fit me is rlly good). Also finishing spray is not the same as setting spray so try a setting spray to lock ur makeup in (elf green setting spray is good). If ur mascara keeps flaking off try a waterproof one. I personally dont like waterproof but I use the essence lash princess pink one and its good for volume and length.

These are some of my favs!

L'Oreal Sky High Waterproof Mascara - I've used this for years and keep coming back to it.

nyx Longwear Eyeliner - goes on pretty well, is relatively easy to blend if you get to it quickly, and then dries down really well.

Covergirl Lip Stain - I'm a lip minimalist and love how easy this is to use and blend with my finger. I usually pop a gloss on top, but it looks good on its own once that wears off. no blotchiness for me!

I love the Maybelline Super Stay lip products, both matte and vinyl. I haven’t tried any dark shades in the vinyl, but I have a nice daytime mauve in that. They’re my favorite formula for matte black.

Make makeup last longer?

Posted by ryanfcs · in r/MakeupAddiction · 7 years ago

I use primer and setting spray whenever I put makeup on and on a regular day it works great! But it’s been really hot here and I’ve been sweating and getting greasy way faster and was wondering if there’s a way to have my makeup last longer? I use blotting papers and I don’t really know what else would help, after a couple hours the ends of my eyebrows can be wiped off by my hair touching them. Any advice would be great! I don’t really have the money to get anything new and my current products work well when it’s not 80+ outside.

don’t put aerosols on ur face lol it’s dangerous. setting sprays/powders are the safest way of locking in ur makeup.

If your skin can tolerate it, setting powder can do wonders. Pro tip: if you really have trouble with oil, pat a thin layer of powder with a damp beauty sponge on top of your primer, before foundation and use a brush to brush off the excess powder. I promise it won’t mess with your makeup when you apply your foundation over it.

NYX Matte Setting Spray is $8, and I think it works as well as Urban Decay.

How do you get your makeup to last all day?

Posted by Mzspyte · in r/MakeupAddiction · 6 years ago

What do you guys to get your makeup to last all day? I use oil free makeup but it seems to get a shine to it after wearing it for awhile. I’ve been using my powder to get the shine to go away, but it comes back. It happens to every foundation I’ve used too (oil free). What am I doing wrong?!

First step is skincare. A well moisturized and well kept face will produce less oil.

What powders are you using and how are you applying them? What foundation are you using and how are you applying it? Do you use setting spray?

I use Dermablend for foundation and powder. When I do use setting spray I use the urban decay all nighter spray. I don’t use anything to prep my face. I’m not sure what all I need to do for that. I do wash my face though, but that’s about it.

My first suggestion would be to check out r/skincare addiction and start a good skincare regimen. It's great that you clean your face but you're most likely stripping oils from your skin that it needs. Adding in a good night time moisturizer that deeply moisturizes and then finding one during the day that doesn't make you shiny but still provides moisture is key. Just give it about 15 minutes to sink in before you go in with makeup. I would also recommend a day moisturizer with sunscreen because thats just good for your skin in the long run. You dont have to deep dive into a crazy 12 step regimen. I'm not gonna make product recommendations to you because I have normal/dry skin so what works for me probably won't work for you. But the info over in the other sub is awesome.

A mattifying primer might be beneficial for you as well. There are quite a few highly rated ones from drug store to high end. My best advice is to look up reviews and buy from a store with a good return policy in case it doesn't work out.

How do you apply the powder? With a brush? Damp sponge? Powder puff?

Use a good moisturizer for oily skin (Clinique dramatically different moisturizing gel), matte foundation, matte setting powder, and then I douse my face in matte setting spray. No matter what I do personally though, I've just learned to accept that I have oily skin and will need to blot eventually

how to make makeup last all day

Key Considerations for Long-Lasting Makeup:

  1. Start with Skincare:

    • Cleanse and Moisturize: Begin with a clean face and apply a lightweight moisturizer suitable for your skin type.
    • Primer: Use a makeup primer to create a smooth base and help your makeup adhere better. Look for mattifying primers for oily skin or hydrating ones for dry skin.
  2. Choose Long-Wear Products:

    • Foundation: Opt for a long-lasting, transfer-resistant foundation. Formulas labeled as "24-hour" or "long-wear" are designed to last.
    • Setting Products: Use waterproof or long-lasting formulas for concealers, blushes, and eyeliners.
  3. Application Techniques:

    • Layering: Apply products in thin layers and build up coverage gradually. This helps prevent caking and ensures better adherence.
    • Setting Powder: After applying foundation and concealer, set them with a translucent setting powder to lock in moisture and prevent shine.
  4. Setting Spray:

    • Finish your makeup routine with a setting spray. This helps to lock everything in place and can provide a dewy or matte finish depending on your preference.
  5. Touch-Up Essentials:

    • Carry a few essential items for touch-ups throughout the day, such as blotting papers, a mini setting spray, and lipstick.

Recommendation: For a reliable setting spray, consider Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray, which is known for its long-lasting formula. Additionally, using a mattifying primer like the Smashbox Photo Finish Oil & Shine Control can help keep oil at bay for those with oily skin.
