TL;DR
Affordable Drugstore Options
For those seeking budget-friendly alternatives, NYX Matte Setting Spray has been frequently mentioned as a reliable option that compares favorably to Urban Decay [3:3],
[4:1]. Other drugstore favorites include L’Oréal Infallible and ELF Blue Light Blocker setting sprays
[3:4]. Milani Make It Last is also highly rated, although opinions on its effectiveness vary
[3:8],
[3:10].
High-End Alternatives
For those willing to invest in a higher-end product, the Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless Setting Spray is praised for its suitability for dry skin [1:3]. Additionally, Shape Tape Stay Spray Setting Spray by Tarte has been recommended for its performance in hot weather
[1:2].
Professional Recommendations
Ben Nye Final Seal is another professional-grade setting spray that has garnered positive feedback. It's known for its durability and is reportedly used by performers at Disney [2:1]. KimChi Chic Beauty Stage Proof setting spray has also been highlighted as a cost-effective alternative to Urban Decay
[4:3].
Skindinavia Sprays
Skindinavia sprays are often recommended as they are believed to be the original formula behind Urban Decay's setting sprays. They are considered effective and more affordable than Urban Decay [5:2],
[5:5].
Considerations Beyond the Discussions
When choosing a setting spray, consider your skin type and the specific finish you desire (matte vs. dewy). If possible, test different products to see how they interact with your makeup regimen. Additionally, pay attention to the nozzle design and mist quality, as these can affect application and overall satisfaction with the product.
What's everyone's favorite setting spray? I've tried MAC Fix It + and Urban Decay All-nighter. I don't feel like either one does a particularly good job. I have dry skin if it matters.
If it's relevant (and because I need more characters), my regimen is:
-LaRoche Posay Toleriane Double Repair Face Moisturizer UV SPF 30
-Smashbox Photo Finish Correct Anti-redness Primer
-MAC Studio Radiance Serum Powdered Foundation
-Setting spray
Thank you!
I love Shape Tape Stay Spray Setting Spray By Tarte definitely look into it! It has been a live saver in this hot weather.
You might like the Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless Setting Spray, it’s great for dry skin!

Mac fix + isn't really a setting spray, its a fixing spray. it doesn't have all the film forming ingredients. The Mac stay over spray is a really nice setting spray though.
Hi! I've been using the Urban Decay All Nighter by Skindinavia and was looking to buy a new bottle but they changed formulas.
Does anyone have any good recs for the same type of product?
Not the biggest fan of the Charlotte Tillsbury one as well.
Thanks!
I swear by Ben Nye Final Seal. It's never let me down. I read that Disney princesses use it so that's how I got started. Great stuff! I buy the large bottle which is pretty pricey but it lasts me quite a while and I just keep replenishing the small spray bottle.
First time posting on here. I need a setting spray dupe of Urban decay all nighter. I’m a college student. Far too poor to be buying UD anymore.
I don’t use setting spray however I seen Milani the most on here. It’s highly rated too. “Make it last orginal “ in clear container
I second this. And also the Mco Charlotte Tilbury dupe. My GOAT was Ulta Wannabe setting spray but the discontinued it. That kept my contour off of my high collared white clothing without fail.
The nyx matte setting spray in the black bottle works great! I have both the Urban Decay and the charlotte tilbury setting sprays and the nyx compares favorably, if not a bit better than both of those.
I second this. I love the NYX matte. I also like the elf Micro Fine setting spray.
Agreed with this comment! I use the UD as well and consider the Nyx to be the closest dupe. I hated the Milani Make It Last that other comments are suggesting. Felt like that one did nothing for my makeup.
L’Oréal Infallible, LA Girl PRO Perfect Oil Control, and ELF Blue Light Blocker setting sprays are my drugstore faves. Not exactly dupes for the ID spray but those work for me.
For a hydrating setting spray, the Milani Make It Last is fabulous, for a true fixing spray to lock your base in place, the one by Revolution Beauty is fantastic. The ELF spray in the white bottle is tops, too, just don’t bother with their dewy set one in the teal packaging.
For a more dubious (skincare wise) rec, I occasionally use cheap hairspray to set my makeup at the very end. 👀
I went to 2 night concert in LA last weekend and used the loreal setting spray. the red can like hairspray, lol. I stood in line in the sun for hours, enjoyed the concert and my makeup was intact each night. it DOES feel like spraying hairspray on your face but the shit worked.
After it’s dry, does it feel like your face is coated with hairspray? (This is a great testimonial too!)
Hi, sorry this is super late but I can attest my face feels…stuck 😆 any hair that gets hit with it stays in place, too. Pretty sure this is just “lightweight hairspray”. It looks, feels, and smells like it 🫣. My main problem is the bridge of my nose; I wear glasses and sometimes I put concealer/setting powder in that area. The spray has unfortunately not kept me from having that weird patch from wearing glasses, if that helps.
i was in theater in high school back in the 90s - certainly before i ever knew of setting spray, maybe before it existed - and our stage makeup secret was to close our eyes and spray aerosol hairspray all over our faces. shit had our faces frozen like jack nicholson in the shining but our makeup STAYED PUT.
I was just thinking about this the other day, and I'm kinda shocked that I haven't seen anyone mention it in this sub yet! Aqua-Net was the OG setting spray
Nyx Matt spray is the best, I love it. You might try that one, it's one of the best selling and even my make survives my work outs with it.
I’ve always had such great luck with UD sprays. Just THIS one was awful. Nice to know the alternatives though.
I agree! I’ve tried - what seems to be every setting spray - and NYX matte and Dewey sprays make my makeup last the longest.
If you shake it really well ita decent.
But honestly, I just tried KimChi Chic Beauty Stage Proof setting spray and it's ny new holy grail. It's amazing and like half the price of UD.
i sometimes like to use the oil control one before foundation as a layer to help combat my oils from breaking apart my foundation but i think as a topping setting spray, all of the versions suck.
I liked the original a lot. I thought this one would be fine.
Sometimes they work as a layer before foundation
It made my skin feel sandy :/ I doubt wearing it under my make up would have turned out good either.
Oh no! Your hair. Were you able to get out easily or did it mess it up?
It helped to comb it a little and some of it broke loose but I just ended up using a wet wash cloth. I had it on my clothes and a rough washcloth worked well to get it off me.
If they don't you can just buy the Skindinavia sprays, they're cheaper and work better imo, love the primer spray in particular
I worked for an aerosol manufacturer company and I learned way way too much about aerosols when I was there.,I can put you all to sleep by talking an about it. But it’s fascinating stuff. Yes they can analyze the mist and spray patters, etc.
I love this formula but I hate the current nozzle and pump. I hope they fix where you do t need to aggressively shake the bottle to aerate the product. I know many users complain about white flecks on their face because they forget to mix it first.
The real question we all want the answer to is: does the All-Nighter still smell like spit/saliva? 😩😩 I fucking loved the original formula but damn if it didn't smell really weird, so they better have made it plain or floral or something!!!
I've used this spray since 2010 and never noticed a strong smell at all. Maybe my sense of smell is bad? Idk
It just smells like hairspray to me
I have the new one so I'm gonna have to go smell it now to see.
Try skindinavia if it doesnt work for you
Hmmmmmmmmm I don't think the glow one smelled as funny as the original black/purple bottle one so now you've got me wondering
(Who am I kidding I'll buy the new one anyway if it still glues my makeup onto my oil slick of a face ✌️😔✌️ even if it smelled like a fart)
Yes!! Comparing it to my MAC it was like I was getting sprayed with water. Sucks because I like the formula but can’t stand the effing nozzle
Same! I love the formula and how it sets everything but the nozzle has been trash forever. Sometimes I'll literally have a whole drop of setting spray running down my face like a tear.
This post says something about a 22% finer mist 🤣
Wonder if they are doing their own formula or if they're still working with Skindinavia
Hey all, I tend to really know myself when it comes to the makeup that’s made for me, but I keep striking out when it comes to setting sprays, or at least not being particularly wowed.
I have tried all the trendy one: CT, Makeup by Mario, Benefit poreless, One Size up all night, and the UD, Mac Fix+. Even though it’s not technically a setting spray, I do have pretty good luck with the Mac, just to sort of set things into place and the OSB one definitely does keep makeup on my face and is the one I will use if I really need it plastered to my face all night. But for everyday use I often find that setting sprays really texturize my late thirties skin and don’t leave my makeup feeling “melted together” or refreshed as most of them promise. Anyone have any HG’s or recs to get better use of of these?
I hate them all. I agree, they texturize my face. Im 45, and without spray I look pretty smooth. Past week ive been trialing sprays and I look SO CAKEY.
What I do use everyday and love, because it just takes the powder down and melts everything together (I don't like to look super matte): Mario Badescu Rosewater spray, the OG pink one,. It really just mimics what my skin does naturally after several hours of wear.
I know some people have issues with MB (moral not skin issues), so really any rosewater could work but I cant vouch. I've tried MB and another brand, and I prefer the MB. It's HG for me, forever repurchase.
I use the Morphe, seems to keep my makeup in place all day and is reasonably priced.
I really like the Caliray setting spray. It’s incredibly light and refreshing.
Please try EADEM, Caliray, too faced hangover, rare, Patrick ta, refy
Since you like MAC fix+, I'd recommend the Rare Beauty setting spray. I found it to be super similar to Fix+ while providing longer lasting makeup (Fix+ doesn't do much for me). It also helps makeup melt into place; you just need to remember to shake it. There's also the Milk Makeup hydrogrip setting spray (also needs to be shaken); I'd only recommend that one if you like dewy makeup and if you don't mind the strong nozzle.
The setting spray I used for years and LOVED got discontinued. It was the Revolution super dewy setting spray. Does anyone have any recommendations for something similar? It left the skin looking like glass and melted powder into texture skin really well.
kimchi chic stage proof matte
nyx marshmallow
Revolution now has at least 4 setting sprays - have you tried any of those? One is the Fix&Glow, which I've been eyeing but haven't gotten yet.
I know that some of my friends dish out almost 30 dollars on Urban Decay spray, but I’ve been looking at brands like Morphe that go for 16 dollars. Is it worth it investing more for sprays, or are there alternative, cheaper options? It’s going to get humid where I live, so I’m trying to find the best option.
I really enjoy Wet N Wild's spray to melt my makeup together (as far as drug store I find it the most similar to Fix+ that I've found) and to make my makeup last longer I like Milani's Make It Last. I even prefer Milani's above Urban Decay
I live in California, so probably not the MOST humid place but I think the Milani setting spray has worked well for me!!
make it last or make it dewy?
I prefer mak it last :)
I like the Milani setting Spray. It’s around $10. I have been tempted to try the Morphe one, though. I tend to use up the Milani very quickly.
make it last or make it dewy?
Ive been using Make it Dewy and I love it! I typically use cream products and don't set with powder all over.
Make it Last
I really enjoy the NYX dewy setting spray and primer setting spray. Love both of them and helps keep my highlighter on and locked in for longer amounts of time. It’s 8$ with taxes for a decent sized part bottle and they sell them in Ulta/Target/Walmart and some CVS.
Nyx is by far the best budget friendly I found so far :)
I agree!
i recently bought the urban decay setting spray after seeing that it’s been beloved for forever.. but i feel like it makes my makeup look patchy? Especially under my eyes .. it creases my makeup so bad.
Does this happen to anyone else ? Is there another way to use this?
Any suggestions are welcomed please help 😭
If I spray it too close or too much, it can cause some run, especially if I haven’t used setting powder. Best results for me, spray at arms length and walk into it. No drips and it holds.
Ahh! Maybe that’s why? I don’t use any powder in my routine except sometimes powder blush but it still manages to make my blush look pretty patchy as well :(
How close to you face are you spraying the product?
I’d say arms length and i only do 2-3 sprays!! i notice like half way through the day my face looks dried out and my makeup starts to look patchy but previously before using it that really never happened so I’m assuming that it’s the setting spray 😭
In my experience, setting sprays are best used throughout the application and to take away any powdery cast left by a setting powder. Have you tried setting with a powder 1st?
I don’t like it either and won’t repurchase, glad I bought the smaller size. I am using CT now, but sometimes use the UD on my brush with eyeshadow. Not sure why it is so highly recommended?
Does it do the same to you??!
I just feel like my makeup looks better before I use it, but I spray from a distance (same with CT)

I would suggest trying a setting powder! They absorb oil throughout the day and you can reapply if you get shiny.
What is the best alternative to Urban Decay setting spray
Key Considerations for Setting Sprays:
Hold Duration: Look for a setting spray that offers long-lasting hold, ideally 8-16 hours, to keep your makeup in place throughout the day.
Finish Type: Decide if you prefer a matte finish (for oily skin) or a dewy finish (for dry skin) to complement your makeup look.
Skin Type Compatibility: Choose a spray that suits your skin type. Some sprays are formulated to control oil, while others provide hydration.
Ingredients: Check for skin-friendly ingredients, such as aloe vera or glycerin, which can help soothe and hydrate the skin.
Price Point: Consider your budget, as setting sprays can range from drugstore to high-end prices.
Recommended Alternatives:
NYX Matte Finish Setting Spray: A budget-friendly option that provides a matte finish and helps control shine for up to 16 hours.
Milani Make It Last Setting Spray: Known for its long-lasting hold and versatility, this spray offers a lightweight feel and a satin finish.
e.l.f. Cosmetics Matte Magic Mist & Set: An affordable choice that helps to keep makeup in place while controlling oil and shine.
Tatcha Luminous Dewy Skin Mist: If you prefer a dewy finish, this luxurious option hydrates the skin and gives a radiant glow, although it's on the pricier side.
Recommendation: If you're looking for a balance of quality and affordability, the Milani Make It Last Setting Spray is highly regarded for its performance and price point, making it a great alternative to Urban Decay.
