TL;DR Monetizing a blog can be achieved through affiliate marketing, advertisements, subscriptions, sponsored posts, and selling products. Choose strategies that align with your audience and content.
Affiliate Marketing
Affiliate marketing is a popular method for monetizing a blog, especially when you don't have your own products or services to sell. It involves promoting other people's products and earning a commission on sales generated through your referral links [1]. This strategy works well when your blog content aligns with the affiliate offers you plan to promote
[5:1].
Advertisements
Using ads is one of the most common ways to monetize a blog. Google AdSense is frequently mentioned as an easy starting point for beginners [5:3]
[5:4]. However, seasoned bloggers often move to ad networks like Mediavine for higher payouts once their traffic grows
[5:6]. It's important to place ads strategically so they do not disrupt the user experience
[5:3].
Subscriptions and Paywalls
Offering subscriptions or paywalled content can be a lucrative way to monetize your blog if you have a loyal audience. This involves restricting access to certain content unless readers subscribe or pay [2:1]. This model is similar to membership sites but simpler for subscribers, requiring only one click to make the payment
[2:1].
Sponsored Posts and Selling Products
Sponsored posts require a significant readership, as companies will pay you to write content promoting their products [5:5]. Additionally, selling products related to your blog's niche, such as eBooks or merchandise, can be another revenue stream
[5:5]. For creative writing blogs, compiling short stories into eBooks could be a viable option
[5:2].
Considerations Beyond the Discussions
While these strategies are effective, it's crucial to treat your blog like a business. Building consistent traffic and understanding your audience's preferences are key to successful monetization [4:3]. Consider using tools for competition analysis to identify gaps in the market and refine your approach
[3:8].
While there are arguably dozens of ways to monetize your blog, there really are six core methods that will help you earn a healthy income from your efforts.
1. Affiliate marketing
One of the most popular methods for monetizing a blog is to leverage affiliate marketing. This is especially useful when you're just starting out and you don't have your own products or services to sell.
All you have to do is develop content that will ultimately be in harmony with whatever affiliate offers you plan to push out.
2. Advertisements
While most people might think that adding some pay-per-click (PPC) ads will be a great way to make lots of money with their blogs, unless you have massive amounts of traffic -- as in 10,000+ visitors per day or more -- the income will be marginal at best.
The real income here doesn't start until you cross about 100,000 visitors per day.
However, you could easily negotiate terms directly with advertisers by utilizing display ads as opposed to PPC ads.
3. Email marketing
One of the most powerful methods for making money from your blog is directly through email marketing. But to be successful, you need to build your list.
Whether you promote blog updates or create a lead magnet, utilize one of the more popular email marketing platforms like Mailengine, Aweber, or Sendgrid to implement the systems necessary to begin marketing via email.
4. Sell ebooks
Ebooks offer a relatively quick pathway for making money from your blog. Develop an ebook that's aligned with the content of your blog.
Non-fiction ebooks are relatively simple to create, and if you're teaching a skill that many people struggle with, it's likely that the ebook will produce a healthy profit.
5. Sell courses
Selling digital online courses is another way you can profit from blogging. Develop intuitive and helpful courses that add a tremendous amount of value and the rest will be smooth sailing.
Courses work great when it comes to technical skills like web development, digital marketing, graphic design, and so on. But they also work in formats like finances, stocks, currency investing, and accounting.
Find what you're really great at and do the due diligence before building your course.
6. Sell digital products
Creating digital products is a great way to profit from your blog. You can effectively sell any type of digital information product on your blog as long as it's in harmony with your content.
You can build a webinar to market your product and deliver them through a member's area or through other downloadable means. Digital products can be a combination of videos, downloadable guides, resources, PDFs, software components, SaaS, and others.

Hi!
You are missing one monetization strategy - when you already have an audience and you have a lot of repeat visitors then there is the possibility to offer subscriptions. A paywall restricts online content access to paying subscribers. It’s software that shows a preview of your content but prevents the reader from seeing it fully without first subscribing to your platform. This is like a membership site, but it’s much simpler for subscribers as it takes only one click to make the payment. For publishers, it takes only 10 minutes to set it up and start collecting the first payments right away. For example, if you are writing about niche topics, run a small news publication, have a premium podcast, or any other valuable content, Zlick paywall might be the best monetization method.
Hey everyone,
I'm curious to hear from those of you who have successfully built a profitable blog. I'm looking to learn from your experiences and gain insights into what it takes to turn a blog into a sustainable source of income.
Here are a few questions to get the conversation started:
How much do you currently make from your blog? (Feel free to share a range if you prefer.)
What monetization strategies have you found to be the most effective? (Ads, affiliate marketing, sponsored posts, etc.)
How long did it take you to start seeing significant results?
What were some of the biggest challenges you faced along the way?
What tips would you give to someone just starting out?
I'm excited to hear your stories and hopefully learn some valuable tips to apply to my own blogging journey. Thanks in advance for sharing!
Wrote review articles about products I used - one of the companies found the post and reached out to me asking if I wanted to be an affiliate for it. Paid well.
In parallel, I wrote another article that took off in terms of traffic (and dwarfed all the other artilces I had) so doubled down on that topic and multiplied the traffic.
Most are pro blogger. Is there anyone still making from Google Web Stories?
Will aesthetic decor blog make money?
There is a ton of competition for that topic.
May I know any niche within that topic?
which tool do you use for competition analysis?
Thanks for sharing
youre likely not going to find the detailed answers you want here because this group has 10s of thousands of people who know how to make blogs and once someone starts sharing details of profits and how, likely someone is going to try and steal the idea. So everyone is quiet.
One thing to try is google for: mediavine income reports
It used to be a more common thing but some mediavine bloggers would do monthly/quarterly earnings reports that broke down traffic, income from ads, income from others... posted directly on their websites.
the mediaivne website used to update a list. its been since 2022.
https://www.mediavine.com/mediavine-income-reports/
But of you google that term and filter in "within last year" you'll find recents
here is one; Lifestyle with Leah
Ive met a few successful MV bloggers, have seen stats.. these reports are legit.
Hi all! It's me again. I have another question. Do you think monetizing your blog content is a good idea? Also, if you do, how?
I have wordpress and blogger. The first one, a basic personal account (so no plug ins allowed). The second one, a completely free to post acccount.
Just in case you missed my previous question, I've been publishing blog posts online for about 15 years (started with blogger, launched with wordpress a while ago, nowadays running both). I could do with help/advice (honest request).
Cheers.
monetizing is of course very important, it helps you financially and also ignites your passion to a greater level for blogging....the first step should be to start monetizing with ads...
Ads like? What would you recommend? I've checked and for wordpress you have to have at least a business account if you want to add plugging. I'm not familiar with blogger. THANKS.
you need to have a host for your domain....if you buy hosting they give you a Wordpress install and you will get a Wordpress admin and password....after that start creating content, once you have traffic of around 10000 you can monetize with Mediavine Journey Ads...
Monetizing a blog is always a good idea. Today, you need to treat it like a business to achieve many other goals if strategically worked from the long term perspective.
Agreed. Time to learn how to do it. Cheers.
Welcome. Additionally, have a look at this Reddit post on beginner blogging best practices and guidelines, that might help to support your blog journey and expectations - https://www.reddit.com/user/madhuforcontent/comments/1h6aybo/beginner_blogging_guidelines_and_best_practices/
Since you are using free platforms, though you can apply for AdSense and get approval, you cannot make money. Organic ranking is the factor that determines how much you can make from your blog. Since, search engines stopped ranking free blogs for potentially competitive keywords, you cannot gain any traction and ultimately cannot earn.
I currently focus on only creating/updating content in hope of getting more users.
But I am thinking about adding some sort of monetization so I can experiment with what works.
So far I have not so many users so I still think its a better use of my time to improve my webpage. Like 1.4k sessions last 28 days.
Agreed. Fair point. Cheers.
It really depends on your purpose for doing it. Some people blog as a creative outlet and choose not to monetize because they feel it complicates things or puts pressure on them. That's fair! For others, however, it's nice even to make enough to cover the costs of your hosting or other tools you use to keep your blog running. That said, there's also the question of what type of monetization is going to fit best your blog - ads, affiliates, your own products, sponsored content, etc.
I can honestly say that it CAN be a full-time income if that's the route you'd like to go long-term.
How much or what type of monetization you choose is going to depend on what works best for you, both in terms of your goals and your comfort level.
Well put. Time to think about it. Cheers.
I created a website for purpose of showcasing my writing (poems, short stories, etc) I do receive fairly consistent traffic but, I’m wondering what is a good way to monetize my website. I’m on Squarespace, if that makes any difference. Also, my “Blog” has turned into where I post my short stories, I’m thinking of changing the name of tab. Or perhaps “Blog” is just fine as is?
A couple things to read on the topic:
https://ghost.org/blog/content-strategy-creator-funnel/
https://ghost.org/blog/conversion-strategy/
A few major ways to make money:
For a creative writing website, I suspect #2 is the best option. If you get fans of your writing, you have a decent shot of converting them. If you write regularly and get people to read what you're writing, you can occasionally create some new "premium" content to sell to your fans.
Thank you. These are great ideas.
I would just categorize your short stories as short stories. You can add the category link on your menu.
There are many ways to monetize a blog. The easiest ones for beginners are using Google Adsesnse and Affiliate Marketing.
Sometimes you'll see Ads on blogs. Those are usually from Google Adsense. The best approach is to not sacrifice your user's experience. Don't place ads everywhere on your blog. They need to placed strategically while being non-intrusive to your users.
Unfortunately, you'll see a lot of beginners place the ads all over the damn place thinking they'll make more money since there are so many ads. In reality, that's going backwards. People already hate ads why would you put them all over the place.
With affialite marketing, I would look for products you're already using and see if they offer an affiliate program. I wouldn't promote anything you're not using.
You can also create digital products to sell on your blog.
Let me know if yo need help. I don't mind giving you some pointers :)
Thank you, I appreciate that. How do I get signed up for this? Also, do I create content boxes for the ads?
This is the link for Google Adsense.
https://www.google.com/adsense/start/
Follow the process on that page.
You're going to sign in with your gmail account.
It could be your personal email or an email designated for your blog.
I'm not sure how Squarespace works nowadays. It's been several years since I taken a peak at their dashboard. I'm sure they have ways to add boxes/widget areas on your sidebar.
I'm a Wordpress guy. It's all I use for all my own stuff and clients.
I would have to look at Squarespace to see where ads can he placed.
Check out that page. Let me know how it goes...
Almost all the blogs use Google's adsense to earn money
Hey I think you might be misinformed. Virtually no one making their living from blogging uses Adsense. Pros starting new blogs use Adsense for maybe 6 months top, and only until the site has enough traffic to move to an ad network with higher payouts. The payout from Adsense is very very low. When I migrated my first blog from Adsense to Mediavine I went from making $350/mo from ads to $1200/mo from ads, with no change in traffic.
How much traffic it requires to get 100k sessions ? I'm a newbie, willing to start blogging career
Yeah, this makes sense but depends on your subscribers clicking the ad to get paid.
Depends if the site is with a network that does pay-per-click or pay-per-impression.
There’s a range of ways:
While there are arguably dozens of ways to monetize your blog, there really are eight core methods that will help you earn a healthy income from your efforts.
For example, if you're running a fitness blog, you can easily sell affiliate health, weight loss or body building supplements. Since the content is already attracting people that are interested in fitness, selling these types of products helps you to create a near-automated stream of passive income.
However, you could easily negotiate terms directly with advertisers by utilizing display ads as opposed to PPC ads. As long as the ads are within your specific niche or industry, you can likely negotiate an amount that would be much more competitive than income from standard PPC ads.
By building a strong bond and a connection with your readers, you can effectively generate a sizable amount of money through the course of marketing both your own products and services along with affiliate offers directly through email. You can expect to generate approximately $1 per subscriber per month.
You can easily promote your ebook directly through your blog by creating attractive content that will draw people in, then enticing them with your ebook. You could also build a sales funnel, which is an online marketing term for an automated multi-step sales machine, and sell your ebook on autopilot.
Courses work great when it comes to technical skills like web development, digital marketing, graphic design and so on. But they also work in formats like finances, stocks, currency investing and accounting. Find what you're really great at and do the due diligence before building your course. Thenm make something far better than the other courses out there in the marketplace.
Digital products can be a combination of videos, downloadable guides, resources, PDFs, software components, SaaS and others. Do your best to create something that helps fill a need or a void. Don't second guess yourself, as you'd be surprised at just how much money you can make by selling digital products on your blog.

Decide on a number of packages, and do your best to ensure that you address any objections upfront. Customers tend to abandon the purchase process when it's too complicated, they have to leave the site, create an account or a number of other reasons according to one such study by Baymard Institute.
You have to be careful with sponsorships. Be sure that you're upfront with your readership. Google also cares acutely about sponsored links and will penalize you if you're selling links along with penalizing the site that you're linking to. Simply put, it's not worth it, so be as transparent as possible.
I have a few things I’m very passionate about and I’d like to start a blog. If it pays for itself, great. If not, I’m sure I’ll have fun along the way.
I’m looking for a step by step guide that is still relevant in 2022.
Big picture would to have frequent posts in a specific niche. Have downloadable documents for free and a few for sale. Also affiliate links to items in my niche.
Thanks in advance.

I already have a following of over 50k. I also have a great blog idea. Just wondering how people are making money with blogs these days.
I probably make 90 percent of my revenue from subscription money. You can also earn from affiliates, ads, sponsored content or events....but in my experience, you need meaningful scale to earn revenue outside of subscriptions
>I probably make 90 percent of my revenue from subscription money.
When you first started out. Did you do like a 30 day trial for $0.99 then $x/month after? Sorry just curious. I've been learning about a subscription model, it definitely seems like a brilliant idea! Thanks for any input.
I've run that campaign before, but at launch, i gave two newsletters a week away, and only charged for the other two. Converted about 15 percent of my free subs to paid, although that number has dropped to the 9-10 range now that list is much larger
I see. Never thought about subscriptions. So in my case, my following are all drawing hobbyists, how could I make a subscription fit in to that niche?
Broadly, I think would look at content that would specifically appeal to artists, and put that behind a regular paywall. Maybe that means some drawing tips or tutorials, interviews with artists, software and tool reviews, etc...all go behind a subscription wall, while you keep some newsletter content free.

Starting a blog today is easier than ever. With the right hosting, a clear plan, and consistent effort, you can build your online presence and maybe even turn your blog into a source of income. Here’s a simple step-by-step guide to help you get started quickly and easily.
Step 1: Choose Your Blog Topic/Niche
Pick a subject you’re passionate about or have knowledge in. It could be anything: travel, food, tech, personal finance, lifestyle, or hobbies. The key is to choose a niche that you can consistently create content for.
Step 2: Get Reliable Web Hosting
To get your blog online, you need web hosting; a service that stores your blog files and makes them accessible on the web. For beginners, I highly recommend Hostinger’s Premium Web Hosting plan.
- It costs just $38 per year super affordable.
- You get a free premium domain name included with the plan.
- It offers excellent speed, security, and easy WordPress installation.
- It’s considered one of the best hosting options in the market for bloggers starting out.
This step is crucial because good hosting means your blog will load fast and stay online without interruptions.
Step 3: Pick a Domain Name
Your domain name is your blog’s address on the internet (like yourblog.com). Choose something short, memorable, and relevant to your topic. Avoid complicated spellings or numbers.
Step 4: Install WordPress
WordPress is the most popular blogging platform worldwide because it’s free, flexible, and user-friendly. Hostinger’s control panel makes installing WordPress a breeze with just one click.
Step 5: Choose a Theme and Customize Your Blog
Pick a clean, responsive theme that looks good on both desktop and mobile. Customize colors, fonts, and layout to fit your style. There are many free and premium themes available.
Step 6: Create Essential Pages
Start by creating important pages like:
- About Me: Tell readers who you are.
- Contact: Let people reach out to you.
- Privacy Policy: Required for legal reasons.
Step 7: Write and Publish Your First Posts
Focus on quality content that provides value to your readers. Use clear headlines, engaging images, and make your posts easy to read.
Step 8: Promote Your Blog
Share your posts on social media, engage with communities in your niche, and consider SEO (search engine optimization) basics to get organic traffic from Google.
Step 9: Monetize Your Blog
Once you have steady traffic, you can start making money from your blog. Here are a few popular ways to monetize:
- Affiliate Marketing: Promote products or services and earn a commission for every sale made through your referral links.
- Display Ads: Use platforms like Google AdSense to display ads on your blog and earn money based on clicks or impressions.
- Sponsored Posts: Collaborate with brands to write posts promoting their products.
- Sell Digital Products or Services: Offer eBooks, courses, consulting, or freelance services related to your niche.
- Membership or Subscription: Provide exclusive content to paying members.
Monetization takes time and effort, but with consistent quality content and audience growth, it can turn your blog into a reliable income source.

January - Today statistics
Just wanted to share my experience to show that real results are possible! I run a weight loss blog where I publish 3 articles a week. For each article, I create 2 Pinterest pins and sometimes make videos too.
All this takes me less than 6 hours a week, and so far, I've generated $3,400 from ads (using Adsterra) during this period. Consistency and smart promotion really pay off!
>> Health and finance content generate the highest revenue from Adsterra.
