How to Monetize Videos on Vimeo

Understanding Vimeo's Monetization Potential

Vimeo is not designed as a platform for viral video monetization like YouTube. It lacks ad revenue sharing and algorithms that promote content for engagement [1:1]. Instead, Vimeo is more often used by professionals to host high-quality videos without ads, making it appealing for filmmakers and videographers who want to present their work in a polished manner [3:1][5:1].

Selling Exclusive Content

One way to monetize your videos on Vimeo is by offering exclusive content that isn't available elsewhere. While you can sell content that is also offered for free on other platforms, it's unlikely to be profitable unless the content is unique or offers additional value, such as behind-the-scenes footage or special locations [1:2]. This approach can create a sense of exclusivity and encourage purchases.

Alternative Revenue Streams

Creators can explore alternative revenue streams beyond Vimeo's platform. Sponsorships and partnerships are viable options if you have a substantial viewer base [2:1][2:2]. Additionally, platforms like Patreon or BuyMeACoffee allow fans to support creators directly [2:2]. These methods can help offset costs associated with producing and hosting content.

Professional Features and Client Work

Vimeo offers features tailored for professional use, which can indirectly lead to monetization through client work. For instance, Vimeo allows video replacement while retaining the same link, better compression, and customizable players for branding purposes [3:1][3:2]. These features are particularly useful for corporate clients who require high-quality presentations and review capabilities [3:3].

Considerations Beyond the Discussions

While Vimeo has its advantages for professional video hosting, it's important to recognize its limitations in direct monetization. Creators should consider leveraging Vimeo's strengths in quality and presentation to attract business clients or offer premium content. Exploring hybrid strategies that include direct sales, subscriptions, and external platforms for community support can enhance the monetization potential.

ORIGINAL POST

Hi, i would like to share my videos i have on yourube also to vimeo. Is that allowed to sell the product i offer for free on other platforms on vimeo too? And do i have to advertise my work or will people search and find and eventually buy them? Its mostly city walk kinda thing.

MoneybackHeronTea · 7 months ago

The short answer is definitely maybe. You can sell content that you made even if you offer it for free elsewhere, but people might not buy it if they can get it without paying easily. So if you're taking videos that you already have up on Youtube or something, and upload them behind a paywall on Vimeo, you're probably not going to get a lot of sales.

What you could do is sell exclusive content (behind the scenes videos, special locations, etc) and try it that way. I'm not super familiar with city walk videos so I can't be very helpful there. You wouldn't need to do paid advertisements, but you would need an audience for your videos. So you could share free episodes wherever you have them available for free already, and link back to your Vimeo account to sell the paid ones.

Thank you for replying. Is there no feed where people get the content recommended?

1 upvotes on reddit
MoneybackHeronTea · 7 months ago

There sorta is, but it's not a promo for paid content - there's an Up Next feature on videos that shows related ones, but it's not the same as the algorithms on Youtube or Instagram or Tiktok that promotes content for engagement. Vimeo doesn't have ads or a rev-share, it's more a place to host your videos and share them out wherever you want them to be seen. :)

Making videos, getting views, earning nothing

Posted by AccomplishedTax7513 · in r/NewTubers · 5 months ago

I've always been passionate about movies and storytelling, so I started creating content around that interest. I'm not very tech-savvy and didn’t fully grasp how the monetization system works at first. Some of my videos have gotten decent traction, but I recently learned that monetization through ads isn’t currently an option.

While making money wasn’t the original goal, the time and effort I’ve been putting in is starting to feel a bit one-sided without any return.

What are some alternative ways to earn from this kind of content — beyond ad revenue? Would love to hear ideas or experiences from others who've found creative paths forward.

If you have a good community, they might wanna support you through things like Patreon or BuyMeACoffee.

If you're getting enough views, you might be able to do sponsorships. It's good to have a contact email tied to your YT just in case places wanna reach out to you. I've also heard that some creators reach out to companies themselves, but don't know much about that (not something I'd ever wanna do myself)

Why is vimeo used over YouTube?

Posted by g_junkin4200 · in r/videography · 4 years ago

Videographers and filmmakers tend to use vimeo to distribute their videos and drafts to clients it seems.

Why is that? I still use YouTube mainly because i noticed on vimeo you have to pay for pro to make videos private or password protected. I provide my clients with links for unlisted youtube videos. Hasn't really been a problem so far. But i wonder if im missing something.

The amount of features you get in Vimeo vs YT is night and day better for corporate work.

  1. Review page is amazing. Leave notes anywhere on the video, and you get a rough timestamp where and physically where the note pertains on the frame, eg lower thirds should go here and say xyz

  2. Replacing videos is something we do pretty much every day. Workflow is Internal Review using the review tools, and then we replace with V1.

2.5) If client uses your Vimeo link, you can customize the player to match their brand colors, and of course, if something changes in the video and replace it, it dynamically updates it.

  1. No ads is a huge bonus.

  2. We have another client where they do everything in Vimeo, and we are admins on their page via our login. It allows us to upload and manage videos on their page without us leaving our page (and, when we leave or respond to reviews, they see it's us!)

There's probably a dozen more reasons but this is just coming from an in house post production dude who uploads a dozen files a week

We use Vimeo for the review feature. Send a link to the client and they can put notes all over it with timecode. I can export the notes and pass them on to the editor. Its a paid account feature but its worth it for us.

  1. Mainly, It just looks/feels more professional to receive a Vimeo link. If a videographer sent me a Youtube link to review I would assume they are an amateur. This alone is worth paying per month.
  2. You can replace the video with new versions and keep the same link.
  3. Better compression (someone else mentioned)
  4. Client can download the file straight from Vimeo, in any format they want (including original file.
  5. No ads (someone else mentioned)

Too much risk of stuff going viral and then being replaced by something else. Could you imagine how much the rickroll link would be worth if you could suddenly put any video there?

For a platform like YouTube there’s a lot of value in knowing content is static.

I think its weird that you wouldn't want to allow the client you are working for to have input on the thing they are paying you to make. For my clients it isn't an option, they are going to give feedback, as is their right to do, anything that makes that process easier is a win for me.

Monetization ideas to offset costs

Most of us reading this are creating with VEO 3 and the software will only improve. I’m trying to think of ways to monetize my VEO 3 creations soon. Have any of you monetized your videos or found a way to absorb the $250/month fee that comes with a VEO subscription?

We’re creating ads for local clients and way more than covering the monthly subscription fees. We just signed another one for $4,250 and that $250 is them paying for another month. We’re just making them a couple ad creatives. I’ve been teaching my students how to market their online marketing services to offline businesses for years. People keep sleeping on IRL (In Real Life) businesses but they’re a goldmine for us. No dealing with affiliate marketing which if that’s ones thing then cool. No dealing with trying to monetize YouTube, chase viral trends, etc etc. We just show up, tell and sell. Even before Veo we were making money with AI Ad Creatives. Now with VEO 3 we’re practically cleaning up. Our average months right now are $12k to $15k tapping just 3 to 5 clients. So we don’t have to sell a lot or service a lot of them. We have some on monthly recurring payments for other services so this works! It’s all in your positioning.

Hope that helps! 🙏🏽

How do implement the product of the customer in your videos? I mean , if they sell some shovels, you have to include exactly these shovels in to the ad, whis is not really possible. Or do I miss something? Are you making videos with faces?

That’s totally possible. Our AI Avatars, AI Influencers and AI Models can hold and display anything. There’s also ways to cut and edit the video to make it appear as so but our AI Actors can work with the products.

As far as i can tell Vimeo has always done this, they just changed the threshold. It is not intended to be a YouTube competitor for viral videos and moneymaking. If your video gets too many views, they tell you to use a different host or pay them.

Vimeo has much higher quality videos and audio and is meant for things like student projects, not a platform for someone to make money off of or to go viral on.

>Vimeo has much higher quality videos and audio and is meant for things like student projects, not a platform for someone to make money off of or to go viral on.

This doesn't make any sense to me. What student project is *SO* concerned with "higher quality" that YouTube's extremely reliable and free 4k-ready platform isn't good enough? Or just hosting the file natively on Dropbox, or Google, or Amazon or whatever?

And if you aren't intending your content to actually be seen by anyone... what the fuck are you uploading it to the internet for? Vimeo's entire strategy is trash.

Lets say I make a true indie film for a local filmfest - meaning the budget is like, the couple thousand dollar film camera I own + $800 for some costumes and to pay for my friends lunch when they act in it.

Vimeo offers to be a platform for me to share my indie film in very high quality so I can easily share it with my family, friends, and cool little community screening, without a bunch of ads. If it starts spreading to lots of places, it means my name as a small director is getting out there, and this is my business - at which point Vimeo says hey we'll keep hosting your high quality film, but this is costing us money and you're pretty big so you have to pay for that or go put it on youtube and get ads and lower quality.

That seems like a pretty useful, but certainly niche service for a lot of people and a valid strategy. Vimeo has NEVER been aimed at viral videos or making content for millions of views as a profession, its always been aimed at enterprise uses. They're just codifying and clarifying at what point your videos are too big for the free service, previously they would just contact you if you got really big based on their own interpretation.

When I was in art school I used Vimeo for my projects on my blog (it’s been a couple of years). They were so much nicer to embed on a blog or website than YouTube videos are/were. You could basically turn off most UI. That’s the reason I used it. The website itself looked nicer and more professional if you showed your animations to someone else. I don’t know if that makes sense. I haven’t used it in years and I definitely wouldn’t use it now.

They would love to be a viral video platform. But they can’t, because their user base is so tiny compared to YouTube lmao.

Changing the rules and moving the goalposts is more their style, just like YouTube has done over the years. If Vimeo grows in popularity, they’ll end up making many of the same changes YouTube did.

It's honestly so easy to self host videos with public cloud these days, it doesn't make sense to use something other than Youtube for onesey twosey things.

Ya, and that money should come from ad revenue. If they force their users to pay, they are shifting the costs onto the people who make them money. Then they leave. Then they make no money. Use your own money to fund your own growth. Ad reve ue should cover it if there is traffic.

How old are these kids though? Highschoolers will spread the video like wildfire, and good luck telling them not to/to take it down. And parents talk to each other - "Oh, you said you might buy it but Karen uploaded to YouTube - I'll text you the link." Done.

To your other point, not every parent is accepting a FB invite from the school play videographer. And what will OP do when they post it? Politely tell them they're breaking copyright laws and hope they listen/care/don't unfriend him?

It's a business plan with many holes. I expect posting here that wants OP to think through the possibilities.

DVD ain’t dead yet, USBs are on the rise though. USB with h.264 video, NTFS formatted at 20mbps or below will play on most modern Smart TVs.

Currently sales are split about 25-40% USB, the rest DVD.

Digital downloads are a copyright/child protection nightmare. If you want to go that route have a look at Mediazilla.

To that end, I would even offer a premium DVD, done on the chemically stable disks that will last a century+.

They are more expensive, but people are actually buying the memory for some hypothetical future situation like showing yet unborn children, etc.

Offering them durable physical media that lasts a lifetime probably can command a significant premium in cases like this. You can't stuff a youtube video in a drawer for a lifetime.

In all seriousness - WTF is wrong with vimeo?

Posted by Sigerr · in r/Filmmakers · 2 years ago

Sorry for my little rant here, but I'd like to hear your opinion about vimeo and what personally bugs you about it. I have too many complaints, and it feels like the website is getting worse and worse:

- I count three different window-options to view your videos / edit preferences

- The new search function is a bummer: it always searches in your videos first, when pressing enter. Like who would want to search through their videos all the time?

- Saving preferences doesn't work properly. It feels like your changes weren't saved / they need forever.

- Your personal profil is a pain in the ass to arrange

- Updating a thumbnail of a video is super buggy

- Customer service seems so be abysmal

- Customers complain about not getting refunded completely and call it a scam (cannot confirm yet)

And the biggest complaint for me:

- Outside viewers need a vimeo account to see your videos / they need to be logged in (sometimes / always... still cannot tell). It took me way too long to realize that. I'm sending my vimeo links for pitching to clients / production companies and oftentimes the client wasn't able view my work, because they don't have a vimeo profil. WHO THE HELL thought this is a good idea?

I use Vimeo at work. I think they have transitioned to serving the business community and not creators, which is where I think your issues stem from.

-The interface is clunky, I'll give you that

-I've NEVER had anyone complain that you can't watch a video without an account. You probably have your privacy settings set up incorrectly.

-For search, we have over 1,000 videos and 99% of the time I'm only trying to search for one of our videos so its great to have it default to searching our videos. If I'm looking to watch other peoples content I go to Youtube.

-I don't have problems with saving preferences or updating thumbnails. Those always work for me.

-Customer service gets back to me in a timely manner.

-Its definitely not a scam. We get fine value for what we pay. It works perfectly well as a professional place to share videos with clients for review.

45 upvotes on reddit
A
AyeAyeLtd · 2 years ago

I agree with this.

-Absolutely, users can view videos without an account. I frequently check my links in Incognito to confirm. I use "Hidden from Vimeo" and "Unlisted" on most of my uploads

-It's so dumb how they made a new, very basic settings UI. But as soon as you want to do something crazy like add captions or change interaction settings, you're straight back to the old UI underneath.

-Vimeo's hosting is professional, a reasonable price, and a great bitrate compared to other platforms. I cringe when I see companies upload to YouTube, only to have competitors' ads preroll over their content.

-Side note, I'm pretty disappointed by their action of, effective immediately, raising rates on Patreon-type creators. The whole point is that you are the hosting platform! You don't get to, without notice, charge me extra for hosting videos with high viewership. Kind of a bullshit asterisk, if you ask me.

I manage my company's Enterprise Vimeo account. I also have a personal free account for my own production company.

Vimeo is focused on large companies, now - specifically streaming and video hosting. While I don't use them for streaming, I will say their video hosting is excellent.

So, as a creator, I admit they're terrible and I'm more than a little saddened about that.

However, as a production manager for a large company, they're great for my business needs.

I was actually thinking to buy 1 month ago. They are changed all plans. New plans are really sucks and so much expensive. It's limit you with 10 or 20 videos per month. WTFFF?
any suggestion for alternatives?

I have a "PRO" plan and very satisfied with it. Fortunately I can auto-renew and keep it. A big thanks to "vengerslovechild" for the link of the vimeo staff post explaining all that.

Summarize

So ! am a Vimeo Pro member. They Charge an arm and a leg to monetize my work in VR360. But...

They do not facilitate any VR Headgear. So my videos are made for people who wishes to be fully emerged into the VR realm and they pay proper dollar to have such experiences. So did I. Now after attaining this Pro membership at a escalated fee off course. The videos I uploaded that was meant for VR can not be accessed in such a way.

Luckily I found a work around. For a VR headset experience do not upload in VR mode. Export your media as a standard 4K 4096 x 2048. 1:1 square pixel and you get a VR experience with circles at the top and bottom but at least its closer to the real thing.

BIG Tech making promises they cant keep. Issh What is your thoughts on the matter and do you have abetter work around?

To Solve the issue partly. I had to recreate a 2D, 4k (4096 x 2048) Sequence and re upload it. Here is that video of the Little Forest Festival. At least one gets the feeling of full VR now.

I am waiting on a reply from the Vimeo CEO to see if this can be corrected.

how to monetize videos on vimeo

Key Considerations for Monetizing Videos on Vimeo

  1. Vimeo On Demand:

    • This feature allows you to sell your videos directly to viewers. You can set your own price and keep 90% of the revenue after transaction fees.
    • Ideal for filmmakers, educators, or content creators with unique content.
  2. Vimeo Subscription:

    • You can create a subscription model where viewers pay a recurring fee for access to your content.
    • This works well for series or ongoing content, providing a steady income stream.
  3. Vimeo Live:

    • If you host live events, you can charge for access to live streams.
    • Consider offering exclusive content or experiences to increase perceived value.
  4. Crowdfunding and Donations:

    • Use platforms like Patreon or direct donation links to encourage your audience to support your work.
    • Promote these options in your videos and descriptions.
  5. Sponsorships and Partnerships:

    • Collaborate with brands for sponsored content or partnerships.
    • Ensure that any sponsorship aligns with your content and audience for authenticity.

Recommendations:

  • Create High-Quality Content: Focus on producing engaging and valuable videos that resonate with your target audience. Quality content is more likely to attract viewers and encourage purchases.
  • Promote Your Videos: Use social media, email newsletters, and your website to drive traffic to your Vimeo page. Building an audience is crucial for successful monetization.
  • Analyze Your Audience: Use Vimeo's analytics tools to understand viewer behavior and preferences, allowing you to tailor your content and monetization strategies effectively.

By leveraging these strategies, you can effectively monetize your videos on Vimeo and create a sustainable income from your content.
