Understanding Vimeo's Discoverability
Vimeo's discoverability can be challenging for creators who are not receiving views beyond direct links shared on other platforms. Unlike YouTube, Vimeo is more obscure and does not have the same level of traffic [1:2]. To improve visibility, creators can follow other Vimeo members and join groups
[1:1]. Additionally, promoting videos outside of Vimeo is crucial for gaining views
[1:2].
Uses of Vimeo
Vimeo is often used by filmmakers and videographers for hosting film previews, trailers, and livestreams [2:1]. It is also favored for its professional appearance compared to YouTube
[2:2]. Many users utilize Vimeo as an online portfolio and for sharing work with clients
[2:3], and it is popular for livestreaming work to clients
[2:4].
Sharing Videos Internally
For organizations looking to share videos internally without making them public, Vimeo offers features like channels or showcases. However, restricting access to specific login credentials, such as Google accounts, may require enterprise licensing [3:1]. Enterprise licenses offer user-level analytics and granular permissions, which can be beneficial for internal communications.
Finding Motion Videos
While Vimeo does not allow direct video searches, users can find motion videos by using search engines with the query "site:vimeo.com" followed by the subject of interest [4:1]. Other platforms like Behance, YouTube, Pinterest, and Instagram are recommended for discovering inspiring motion pieces
[4:2].
Why Choose Vimeo Over YouTube
Vimeo is preferred over YouTube by professionals due to several reasons:
Overall, Vimeo is a powerful tool for professional videographers and filmmakers who need advanced features for client collaboration and presentation.
I'm a tad confused at how vimeos public gallery / feed works, all the videos I upload to vimeo, but one get barely any views outside of direct links that I've shared on other socials or host on my personal website. Ive posted, short films, mini documentaries and other pieces of my work recently, to no avail.
Whilst I see other creators on the platform seem to somewhat relatively flourish. (inclusive and exclusive of staff picked content)
I know algorithms are algorithms, but I feel like I'm missing something with how the platform works. I contacted vimeo support whom suggested that as I was on the starter plan I needed to upgrade to the standard plan to fix "the issue" but I don't see this as an extra feature in their categories.
any ideas? cheers!
I can't believe you posted this 21 days ago and got no responses. But that fact and your original question both source to the same problem: Vimeo is more obscure than the collected poems of George Armstrong Custer.
This subreddit gets very little traffic; Vimeo gets very little traffic. I'm constantly coming across really great videos on Vimeo which in 10 years have had like 67 views and no comments.
Regarding my own videos on Vimeo - I have a Plus plan and the ones that get the most views are the ones that I publicize outside of Vimeo
This is the response I got from Vimeo, after I sent to their experts email a number of weeks ago, which despite not being active apparently, is still heavily showcased on their site:
"Thanks for your message! Please note that the experts@ email address is no longer actively monitored.
It looks like you also reached out to our support team for guidance on your question, so they'll be happy to follow up soon.
Typically, they suggest following other Vimeo members, and joining Groups and Channels (especially since you can add your videos to certain Groups and Channels).
If you have additional questions, feel free to follow up on your support ticket directly.
Best of luck with your projects!"
Honestly, apart from high quality video web hosting, I have no idea what usefulness the platform has.
Also noting, the customer service support team is still active I have with them, to which they have not responded to my latest message in a month.
This is more for curiosity than anything else. I've seen a few people comment about using it for their videography work and sharing demos, and know a couple regulars use it for On Demand. What do you use it for, and what do you like about it?
I think it looks more professional than youtube for demo videos
when it works
I use it as an online portfolio of my work, and to see the work of other people.
Livestream work to clients.
Paintball videos and other short sequence films
We host our film previews and trailers on Vimeo, and use the livestream and portfolio features to provide/host screenings for our customers. We also sell home use streaming using Vimeo On Demand.
I work in learning and development.
We have some training videos that I want to share internally.
It is quite a pain to have to embed them in the learning management system every time and I'd like to have a more dynamic Video Library using the channels or showcases etc in Vimeo. However, I don't want these videos to be available publically.
Our organisation uses Google for logins. Can I limit access to people that login with google with our company google account? So far the security settings seem to only allow me to control where something can be embedded but what if I want to allow someone to access a video directly on Vimeo. How can I do this without increasing our subscription to include named accounts for everyone?
Thanks for any advise you can provide.
Best,
Aimee
If you don't mind DMing me and share your account ID I can help out. This is super common and usually ends up as a great use for the enterprise license where the per user pricing can be much less for internal viewers of private videos. Vimeo does a great job working at scale with SSO for L&D / Internal comms use cases by providing user level analytics and granular permissions along with a bunch of other enterprise specific capabilities.
As per title. Where can I browse latest and greatest motion pieces?
Behance, YouTube, Pinterest, Cosmos, Instagram all have everything you could be after. Motion Design Awards has great new pieces pretty much every day. Find artists who’ve made pieces you like and delve into their other work, portfolio, reels etc!
Reddit or following big studios on ig for me.
Can you share some of your favorite studios for other people to get some inspired ?
Some of the best studios out there are definitely Man vs Machine, Ravie, illo and Buck
Also Pinterest.
In any search mechanism: site:vimeo.com "subject of search"
Go to the videos tab Be happy
Videographers and filmmakers tend to use vimeo to distribute their videos and drafts to clients it seems.
Why is that? I still use YouTube mainly because i noticed on vimeo you have to pay for pro to make videos private or password protected. I provide my clients with links for unlisted youtube videos. Hasn't really been a problem so far. But i wonder if im missing something.
The amount of features you get in Vimeo vs YT is night and day better for corporate work.
Review page is amazing. Leave notes anywhere on the video, and you get a rough timestamp where and physically where the note pertains on the frame, eg lower thirds should go here and say xyz
Replacing videos is something we do pretty much every day. Workflow is Internal Review using the review tools, and then we replace with V1.
2.5) If client uses your Vimeo link, you can customize the player to match their brand colors, and of course, if something changes in the video and replace it, it dynamically updates it.
No ads is a huge bonus.
We have another client where they do everything in Vimeo, and we are admins on their page via our login. It allows us to upload and manage videos on their page without us leaving our page (and, when we leave or respond to reviews, they see it's us!)
There's probably a dozen more reasons but this is just coming from an in house post production dude who uploads a dozen files a week
We use Vimeo for the review feature. Send a link to the client and they can put notes all over it with timecode. I can export the notes and pass them on to the editor. Its a paid account feature but its worth it for us.
You date YouTube in college, you marry Vimeo
1 Better quality
2 Not getting flagged and warning over music I PAID FOR. ( yeah, i have 2 strikes on my youtube account over music used that I PAID FOR )
Have you tried appealing? I’ve gotten flagged for the same reason but I just upload a copy of the license and the videos got unflagged
No.2 is such a time and life saver! I can't understand why YouTube never implemented that in their platform... Edit: changed the boldness of text (stupid hashtag)
Too much risk of stuff going viral and then being replaced by something else. Could you imagine how much the rickroll link would be worth if you could suddenly put any video there?
For a platform like YouTube there’s a lot of value in knowing content is static.
So you don’t let your clients review their video and give notes??
I think its weird that you wouldn't want to allow the client you are working for to have input on the thing they are paying you to make. For my clients it isn't an option, they are going to give feedback, as is their right to do, anything that makes that process easier is a win for me.
Hi, all. I'm helping organize a film festival and we want to have the videos be online for a short period of time. I was thinking I would just upload all the films onto vimeo and make them private and then make them public or password protected for a few hours during the festival dates and then set them to private again. I'm wondering if there is going to be any issues with uploading full length films onto Vimeo, I know we'll have to pay for at least a pro or a plus vimeo package so we can have more storage but are there any length restrictions? Or if you guys know of a better way to do this, please let me know!
following
Festival Scope is what most fests are using now. Worth checking out at least as it's actually formatted for events, not just a user submitted streaming platform.
Who has a great alternative for vimeo?
I’m currently using Youtube but it looks unprofessional on my site. The free plan on Vimeo works okay so I could just make extra accounts purely for portfolio work.
Anyone has some tips?
Why not just upload to your website? For example if you use a Wordpress there are plans for xGB storage depending on the plan. If you have a website they may already have an option for adding storage. So you can create a portfolio page with a selection of videos that are hosted by your own site.
Problem is not just bandwidth (but for small audience it's fine)... it's the tech backend. I do not want to send people to a video and they say "hey it didn't work." Also, dynamic serving from Youtube / Vimeo means they can adapt the video quality to the viewer's screen and bandwidth. That's hard work to do for all your own videos.
And did I mention the backend work? "This website has not updated this plugin to be compatible with this version of wordpress!"
I would assume that would depend on the web provider that one chooses. It does not have to be word press (though I’m sure it would work and Wordpress .com (vs .org) is pretty up to speed. Many have sophisticated options that can handle dynamic video quality. But based on OP description who uses free YouTube option a website based portfolio would be much cleaner. Of course hosting the final product for professional viewing vs a showreel could require a different approach.
Agree. Most people don’t care if it’s 4KHDR, so a 1080p H.264 video has a small file size and should be no problem to put on a webserver with a bit of storage.
Hi there, Since Vimeo cut all the social features, I felt like something was missing So I decided to build it
frameclub.club is a space for motion creators to share work, credit their team, and get discovered through a curated feed Each user has a public profile, like a portfolio that grows with their collaborations Still in beta, far from perfect, but evolving every day Open to sign-ups if you’re curious
Disclosure: I'm the CEO of PandaVideo.com, a video hosting platform that's gained significant popularity in Brazil and is expanding globally. I noticed your frustrations with Vimeo, Wistia and others and wanted to share some insights that might help.
Having built a platform specifically to address the pain points you're describing, I can tell you there are definitely better alternatives out there. Our clients consistently report significant competitive advantages when switching from platforms like Vimeo, particularly for conversion-focused videos like VSLs (Video Sales Letters) or hosting video courses.
Unlike Vimeo's recent shift to total storage limits, we've maintained a more flexible storage model that scales with your needs. This approach doesn't force you to constantly manage and delete older content, which is particularly valuable for agencies and professionals who maintain client archives and don't want the headache of content management that Vimeo now requires.
We've also implemented robust security features that make it significantly more difficult for viewers to download your videos, protecting your intellectual property while still ensuring smooth playback. This has been a key concern for many professionals who've switched from other platforms.
We have an open API. This completely open API makes custom integrations straightforward, allowing you to build the workflow you need without the limitations you might encounter elsewhere.
For those using videos for marketing or sales, our platform includes conversion-optimized features specifically designed to increase conversion rates. Many of our clients have found this gives them a measurable advantage in their digital marketing efforts, especially in competitive markets.
I'd be happy to answer any specific questions about how we compare to other platforms. We've built our solution by listening to exactly the kind of frustrations you're expressing here.
Wistia
Less compression, no adds before, more professional look and layout. Those are the reasons for me
i am just getting started with some filmmaking stuff and i want to put it online.
I'm definitely going to use Vimeo over youtube, but a quick question if you dont mind:
i see youtube a lot on here lately because they seem to be doing a shit job of copyright enforcement / protection. does Vimeo offer any kind of peace of mind for that? i'm worried because I'm working on a project for a local band and I don't want their music to get stolen or any kind of shenanigans. thanks for your input!
One thing to be careful of is to make sure you videos aren't downloadable. It's a switch you can turn on individual videos. I sometimes use this feature for project delivery to clients because they can easily download an appropriate version and sometimes company firewalls block large files via DropBox. So, if people downloading is a concern, make sure you haven't made it easier for them to do-so.
Also, I've found copyright protection to be looser on Vimeo is some respects. Because everybody is uploading everything to YouTube, whether they have the rights or not, YouTube has really advanced copyright-seeking algorithms. There have been times that I worked with a musician, uploaded the file we created and then it got removed because their label had a blanket agreement with YouTube to remove any audio that matched their copyrighted material. Vimeo is more of a pro platform and less of a dump everything platform so it's much easier to upload copyrighted music and not get flagged for it.
> does Vimeo offer any kind of peace of mind for that?
If you want to prevent anyone from bootlegging your content, don't post it. That's the only way. Once it's out there on the Internet, it's out of your hands whether the downloadable switch is turned on or not.
Not sure if it directly answers your questions, butI uploaded a dance video I shot with a custom music score. After a year of it being up some company tried to claim the music, even though I sat with the musician as he composed the piece. I think the video was down for a a few days as I disputed the claim, saying I could provide original files and prove the accuser was lying. Not a fun process, but it seemed leagues easier than YouTube's dispute system.
To answer your questions, in reverse order:

Source: I work in distribution and sales/rights management. I frequently have to indie films and have always requested Vimeo links, as have my colleagues everywhere I've worked.
I used to use Vimeo because their is less clutter and it's more curated content. I switched to YouTube because my videos often have music licensed for digital download distribution. It aggravates me that the license covers only four platforms and Vimeo is not one of them. You Tube is cleared.
I use it for showcasing my videos and reels because it’s the industry recognised platform, but I never watch anything on Vimeo because the buffering is beyond awful. Most likely my garbage internet but if someone sends me a link to their film on Vimeo, it doesn’t get watched which is a shame.
You can replace your videos under the same link, so If you have your reel linked elsewhere from before, it's handy, this is also very convenient when dealing with clients, as you can just update the link. Also you can password protect your content. Vimeo Review Tools are also very convenient if you are collaborating in any way, or showing content remotely to clients for feedback.

Downloads. One Vimeo feature I use frequently because I work for a government agency and we don't have the money for a pro Dropbox account in addition to Vimeo. So I deliver files via unlisted Vimeo links when delivering to folks outside our computer network. Very convenient for the recipient and for us.
Ah! interesting!
That’s top of mind as well for hosting and finding a platform that’s gov friendly.
I too deliver a lot of unlisted links (cyber & gov as well) so totally understand your needs.
Will add gov approved secured hosting on the feature list.
Thanks so much - any additional inputs/wants/nice to have?
The other big thing we use is just being able to embed without any kind of branding. Vimeo lets me set it up so you don't see a Vimeo logo on the player when we embed, which my superiors have preferred for our embeds.
Playlists/categories of some kind is another but I feel like that's a fairly standard feature and not something unusual. We sort our videos into categories for ease of use for the public.
Everything else I can think of is just usual video site stuff!
Definitely looking forward to hearing more about this and will check it out.
I am actually thinking about a self-hosted solution like nextcloud , yet to see what to use as embeded player , getting more and more annoyed by these greedy companies, have been a vimeo customer for 15 years - now they forced "upgrade" to my plan, which would have resulted in 20x price increase. F*ck them. I think self-hosting if the way to go .
Yeah this is my thoughts as well; many of us self host already through whatever cloud you’re already paying for.
Embedded videos is essentially my entire concept and it’s currently functional
https://proudwork.io/kennytjay/video/navigatinglifeasanexp
So far we’ve integrated YouTube, Google Drive and Dropbox.
I will get to testing to see if my player can be embedded to a personal site.. that would be interesting.
I’m really trying to avoid hosting as many of us already pay for storage.
What are your thoughts on this?
Frame.io with faster upload speed and with embed player , perhapse something like showcase too
Understood, are you using frame for review Mostly?
Review page where clients can click on part of the image and give feedback.
Thanks for the reply, I’ll save on that the request list.
Are you using that pretty heavy on review?
I’ve used it extensively in the past and it was a great feature to have/use - and can see that functionality being implemented for a future version.
Cool. Yeah after 18 yrs I’m done with it. Hopeful for alternatives with review in the future.
Check out Gumlet, should be able to pick good/must have features from it
That looks great, thanks for the recommendation!
What features would you need? Personally or business wise
About 10 years ago Vimeo was the place for filmmakers to post their work, specifically short form content, trailers, shorts, reels, etc. It was a great space to upload, well, everything. Youtube has caught up in aspects like image quality which is what caused Vimeo to surpass it in the first place, but there's drawbacks that make Youtube less than ideal for portfolio hosting: Are you going to re-upload a video to your page that the client probably already posted themselves? Are you going to make people watch ads in order to see your reels?
Vimeo still exists, but is noticeably clunkier than it was in its golden era and also has a terrible UI design causing profiles on mobile open to the availability page instead of videos. The once-thriving community is also almost non-existent these days. It's still great for embedded video, but you still need somewhere to post them. Do you make a specific portfolio page on your personal website and just fire up the squarespace editor or call up the web designer every time you have new work? I've always preferred a clean website with a couple choice highlight clips and few tabs, but maybe I'm out of style.
This is one of those areas I felt like we had on lock in the past but the standard has obfuscated in the last decade. Or maybe I'm just out of touch. Where do you post your portfolio?
Edit: I'm getting the sense that people overwhelmingly just embed to their own websites.
For embedded video I’ve yet to find anything better than Vimeo. Excellent quality and fully customizable player so you can present your work exactly the way you want. That said, the writing’s been on the wall for Vimeo for a while now, and the fact they were entertaining opening up their library for AI training was enough for me to cancel my subscription. I still have my reel up there but otherwise, all my work is currently homeless. Seems like a great opportunity for a competitor.
Following.
I hate, hate Vimeo with a burning hot rage these days. It seems purposefully designed for maximum frustration.
FWIW, my Vimeo usage was/is for 1) personal portfolio/embedding on my personal website, 2) some client feedback/temp deliverables, and 3) selling a film via Vimeo on Demand.
For #2, I'm 90% on Frame and 10% on GDrive.
For #3, I'll probably let the film lapse on Vimeo On Demand, as it makes more money on other platforms.
#1 is my last one to solve.

⭐️ EDIT/UPDATE: I found an old reddit comment, and am shifting my personal portfolio to bunny.net
Did a test upload. Looks perfect, mega cheap. Under $1/month it seems.
Most importantly it works with my custom Webflow site (just did the test) and the video player can be slimmed down to barebones. The UI on the player looks way cleaner than Vimeo, imo.
The link to the old reddit comment is here. Check out that guy's website for an example. It looks really slick (he hides most of the UI options) and the videos are performant.
Boom. Done. Goodbye Vimeo, and fuck you 🙂
(Apparently they have an affiliate thing, if you read this far and choose to click that https://bunny.net?ref=c5btm0l534)
I went through exactly what you did a year or so ago and joined bunny.net. So much better and cheaper than Vimeo!
That's great to hear. tbh, I saw that guy's bunny. net recommendation a year or so ago but was a bit intimidated by the website, since their product offering is way larger/more robust than just "video embed wrapper"
I'm mid-portfolio refresh rn, and after seeing this post pop up, I finally tried it and was happily surprised with how easy it is at first upload. good to hear it's held up for you over a year!
$300/year to Vimeo is pissing me off. $12/yr sounds much better. 🙂
This is my exact situation. I'm only still a subscriber to Vimeo under duress of there being no viable alternative for web embeds and festival screeners. It's a borderline worthless site otherwise these days, and am reminded as such whenever I have to actually use it.
Bunny.net is awesome but the costs do rack up depending on how frequently your video is watched. Might be worth reading up on if you haven’t already seen
I just put my portfolio up on https://app.screenkey.com - it looks amazing, and reps can share links for people to watch on their smart TVs- and they have a FREE tier! 12/10 reccomend
I used to use YouTube links on my portfolio site but them putting up what to watch next drove me up the wall so I shifted all my videos to Wistia really happy with it now
Second Wistia. They’ve been a great alternative for a while and have had a really flexible player for embedding.
Wisita. Can you give me a little elevator pitch for Wistia? I've had ad people send me previz stuff on there but I never really thought twice about it. Is it video hosting or is it more social media for marketing type thing?
Sure, it’s not a social network it’s a video hosting platform. I’ve only used the free tier for hosting my videos each account gets 10 free uploads and embed them how ever you want, the free tier also gives you limited analytics so you can see how long people watched for etc. Most importantly there are no adverts your uploads even on the free tier, the only thing they put on the video is there logo on the play-bar but you can set the bar to hide on playback.
There’s also a lot of tools for marketing folks as well, I’ve not used that side of it much as I’ve just needed the hosting.
Vimeo used to be about the only place where professionals put their video's up... Used to be. It also used to be pretty inexpensive. Neither of those things are true anymore. I think I'm about to close my account.
How to use vimeo
Here are some key considerations for using Vimeo:
Creating an Account:
Uploading Videos:
Video Settings:
Editing Videos:
Sharing and Embedding:
Engaging with Viewers:
Analytics:
Recommendation: If you're new to video sharing, start with the free account to familiarize yourself with the platform. As your needs grow (e.g., for business or professional use), consider upgrading to a paid plan for more features.
