Uploading Process
To upload videos to Vimeo, you need to first create an account and then navigate to the upload page. You can either drag and drop your video files into the designated area or click the 'Upload' button to select files from your computer. Once uploaded, you can add details like title, description, privacy settings, and tags to your video [3:1]
[3:2].
Folder Organization
If you want to organize your videos into folders, you might face some challenges. Users have reported that even when selecting a folder before uploading, videos sometimes end up on the main landing page instead of the chosen folder [3:2]. This may require manually moving videos into folders after uploading.
Troubleshooting Audio Issues
If you're experiencing issues with audio not uploading correctly, it could be due to multiple audio tracks in your video file. Vimeo's help center suggests checking for this as it might affect the conversion process [2:1].
Considerations for Using Vimeo
Vimeo is often used for professional purposes due to its customizable embedding options and ad-free player, making it suitable for portfolios and private sharing [4:2]. However, it's important to note that Vimeo has limitations such as storage space and bandwidth usage, especially for business profiles
[4:3]. Moreover, Vimeo's audience reach is significantly lower compared to platforms like YouTube
[4:7], so if exposure and views are your goals, YouTube might be a better option.
Alternative Platforms
For broader exposure, consider using platforms like YouTube, TikTok, or Instagram Reels, which offer greater visibility and engagement [5:6]
[5:7]. These platforms are more suited for reaching wider audiences and gaining random views, unlike Vimeo, which is more targeted towards specific groups and professional use
[4:4].
How do I bulk download the videos I uploaded onto Vimeo? I have 1000+ videos, vimeo payment plan is not renewing, and I do not want to lose my videos. I am a teacher and will lose my life's work if this continues.
You can do it through the API.
Here's another route - look for the June 2024 update section: https://www.andrewgormley.com/post/downloading-all-videos-from-a-vimeo-channel
I don't know of a bulk download option, but you can download videos individually and their support team can send you a CSV with download links to make it go faster.
Hi, I'm sorry the renewals are not working for you. You're not going to lose your videos. DM me your account information and I'll make sure support is on the case.
Hi, thanks. i sent you a message
I just downloaded one by one. I’m not going to do this “pay more + a year in advance” for a terrible service
Not sure. Vimeo is never my primary storage. I never upload anything I don't have backed up.
I don't know if there is a bulk download option. Maybe enlist some peers, give them your login & have folks start helping you. Team effort.
We are uploading MOVS onto Vimeo but the sound isn’t getting uploaded. Has anyone else ran into similar problems?
Does it have more than one audio track? According to the help center that might affect it: https://help.vimeo.com/hc/en-us/articles/12426156099217-Troubleshoot-conversion-problems#h_01FQCPKAXGW9SS7RQMRFG71ABX
Hey guys, I'm a videographer and have been uploading all my work to Vimeo so I've got loads of folders for all the finished videos but some projects could have 10 short videos.
I used to be able to just make a folder and upload directly to that folder but now anytime I upload it adds the videos to the main landing page and I have to manually add them all to the selected folder.
Does anyone know if they've changed some setting or how to add videos directly to a folder? I've previously wanted to have folders within a folder which I couldn't figure but now would be happy just to figure out how to upload videos into a folder again
Any tips would be appreciated
Are you uploading by dragging and dropping into the folder or selecting the folder from the upload page?
Thanks, have tried both ways. If I choose the folder and drag and drop, the video into the folder the video still lands in the main page.
Or if I'm in the folder and then click the upload button, there's no option to select the folder and now it just lands in the main page while it used to land in the folder I was in :/
Uploaded my short film on Youtube and Vimeo a few weeks ago, and surprised by the varied reception. Haven't used either platform in a few years so wanted to see which would be better in 2025.

With all vimeo's plans charged annually I feel like I wasted my money :/
Where do you guys like to share your films after their festivals run?
What draws you towards one service more than the other?
If you’re looking for views/ exposure / monetization obviously YouTube is better.
As a narrative DP I use Vimeo to host videos for my cinematography portfolio website primarily because I can customize the embedded player more and I think it looks better than YouTube embeds.
I also use it to upload and share private links of cinematography references, pre-visualization tests and so forth.
All my uses are focused on showing video to a limited group of specific people, I do not expect to get random views from it at all.
Thanks for sharing. Seems like maybe keeping reels on vimeo for the "professional" aspect, and uploading the full films on youtube is best.
I think Vimeo's "professional aspect" is just inertia from back when they used to be useful. We used to use it all the time for your demos and client approvals, but now I've stopped using it entirely and cancelled what I was paying for their hosting.
They became the industry leader with the offerings that were too good to be viable, I guess. Once they started trying to make big profits, they killed themselves.
If you want views, free space, no file size limit, easy sharing: YouTube.
If you want customizable embedding, a shitty UI that changes every 3 months, barely any storage space, limits to the file size you can upload, limits on bandwidth usage(business profiles) and changing prices every 12 months: Vimeo.
Oh and not just that, also add the fact that in Europe Vimeo is practically as useful as the photo gallery on your phone. Can't search for any videos, can't search for other users and can't click on anyone's profile. Rest assured you'll still be charged the same as US though (yes, this was the real update for Europe this year. You literally can't use Vimeo for almost anything more than viewing your own library)
Unfortunately Vimeo is pretty objectively terrible these days. Unless you have a specific need for their services I don't recommend it. For example if you have a website where you need control over your web player (no ads, no links, etc). But even then Vimeo is not great anymore. You'll get no one wandering Vimeo to come across your video. That is no longer part of what they do, hasn't been for a long time now.
If you bought an annual account try to get with customer service and push for a refund on the rest of the plan.
Vimeo went corporate many years ago and abandoned indie filmmakers. Recently they tried to win filmmakers back because b2b customers didn’t provide enough revenue.
But the platform currently sucks for filmmakers.
How are they trying to win filmmakers back?
I certainly don't see any evidence of that...
Crazy how Vimeo went from being the go-to for filmmakers to feeling almost invisible unless you’re selling services. This post says it all: 2 views vs 47K on YouTube. It’s not just about platform quality anymore—it’s where the audience actually is. Anyone else feel like Vimeo’s annual fees are better spent elsewhere these days?
I remember it that way.
You cannot compete with YouTube. There isn't even a reliable backup to YouTube if you want anything more than video hosting for url sending.
Tried and failed and then they pivoted to streaming and corporate embedding but they don't have the infrastructure to make it scale so the user gets locked into paying for bandwidth. Views. You pay for views. You get punished for pushing traffic to their platform. Traffic that that are trying to get.
Yes that’s why I will never use them again. They got popular from indie filmmakers then tried to pivot toward corporate customers because they thought they could increase prices. Now they crawling back.
I've posted...they ain't noticed...
I think every year a few of the nominations for the Academy Awards were first noticed as staff picks on Vimeo.
Are you submitting your film to the festivals? Submit your Vimeo link.
I wish I submitted to a festival, but I don't think it's good enough unfortunately :( and it's also I have to pay for it right? But if I do submit it so I can just send the vimeo link?
Vimeo is fine for hosting your films. Film Freeway has a lot of free festivals. You won’t know until you submit. Just put stuff out there and make more. All of my submissions are Vimeo links. When they ask for a file you can send it via Vimeo as well.
You might you might check it out if you want to and tell me if you think it's good enough for a festival
Vimeo was a great platform, community, source of inspiration, now is worse than anything else online. As an example, the search bar is off for anybody in Europe. Meaning if I’m in Europe I can’t even see videos except for my owns.
It sucks it's not free and only for 14 days now
I’m glad it’s not free. It keeps out a lot of the idiots.
It costs like $1 a month or something.
If you want free use YouTube.
Try TikTok or Instagram Reels, ppl watch them a lot
Full short films on tiktok and ig?
Never heard of that one, but I'll try it thx!
yes
if you want no one to ever see it
Then where would you recommend?
hi everyone,
I'm looking for a solution with importing vimeo video files to gumlet. Vimeo requires a "pro" account (i'm currently on plus) in order to allow imports. If i go subscribe for the pro account it will require an annual subscription which i'm not willing to pay for this cash grab.
is there an alterative way to transfer my videos over? i have already cancelled vimeo's subscription since the renewal cost is almost double than it was before.
Hey u/rikaro86
with plus its not possible to import as vimeo restricted your video access via API.
Pro and Plus are old plans. You can try switching to "standard" plan which is new and it has monthly subscription as well. If you are not seeing these new plans then you might need to connect with Vimeo support for this switch.
thank you i'll try that
I'm on a multigig (10G!) provider in the Bay Area, and Vimeo seems to cap out at about 100megs upload.
It would be cool to see them roll out better upload speeds! Most of the world seems to be working with mutigig customers at the 1-2 gig range, and we are seeing better than 1G from real world internet endpoints, in both directions.
Don’t hold your breath. The only updates we’ve gotten in the past few years is a UI refresh no one asked for.
I haven't really used Vimeo before, but figured I would upload a dramatic reading I made, because the story I read is sexual in nature, and we all know how Youtube feels about that nowadays.
The video uploaded just fine, but whenever I try to change the privacy settings from private to public, the page reloads with no changes made to the settings. In short: I click on the "public" option, but the video remains private, and the site doesn't even tell me what the problem is.
Can anyone help? :/
Are you still having trouble with this? I was also wondering if you uploaded the video as-is, or if you happened to use the "Vimeo Create" tool.
The latter has some opaque restrictions which can be frustrating to navigate. One of which is that videos that are longer than some duration (a minute or so?) can no longer be made public with a Basic account. You'd know if you used this tool if you were asked to select a template and music while uploading your video.
If you didn't use Vimeo Create for your video it might be worth making sure the video is rated as "Mature". It could be that the video was flagged for content, although I'd be surprised if they just prevented you from making a video public without some kind of messaging. But I'm not 100% sure on that.
Lastly, I would try downloading either the iOS or Android app and try to change the privacy setting from there. If the problem persists you can start to narrow down whether it's a bug with the service or something else.
I hope that helps!
Reporting I have the same problem as of recently. I don't want every video uploaded to be 'Public', just specific videos. With the volume we upload and variety of public vs. private, it is easier to manually change this after upload, but now that option is "greyed-out". I also am on a Premium account.
i had this problem but i figured out the solution. go to your vimeo account settings and in the Videos/Upload defaults section, change the “who can watch your videos?” drop-down to “Public”. Then click the blue Save button. Then go back to the settings for the specific video and now you should be able to make it public. Alternatively you could check the box that says “also apply to all existing videos” before clicking the blue Save button in the video upload settings. Hope that helps anyone else with this issue.
Worked for me. Thanks!
Thank you, good sir.
having the same problem
Reporting in that I have the same problem, it's just grayed out and I can't pick it.
Did you try Jakelael's solution above?
(without black bars left and right?)
Vertical videos are definitely supported! The video's page on Vimeo.com will contain black on either side (as part of the page design), but the video can be embedded on other websites without any black bars.
This help article also provides some useful info!
Many thanks
I’m extremely new to this and just wanted to compile all my 4k videos of concerts into a sharable compilation. I shot it all on an iPhone XS in 4k 60fps, and edited it all together on iMovie. Despite rendering it in 4k, it still only goes up to 720p on Vimeo, and 1080p on YouTube with both being blurry/pixelated. So my questions are as follows: Can I upload 4k from my phone? Does iMovie actually work like I’m thinking it does? (like actually making 4k movies) What do I have to do to be able to post it on either, and what would be the best one to use?
Tried searching but couldn’t find something for this. Thanks in advance.
Upload a 4K file. Wait. Done.
Sounds like you just aren't waiting long enough for thr processing to finish or are viewing on a platform that doesn't allow 4K viewing.
Well after about 7 hours on YouTube, it only hit 1080p. Does it take longer than that? Same with Vimeo and I verified that it supports 4k uploads
Then all I can think is either the file is not 4K, or you are viewing it on a device/platform that doesnt support the 4K option.
Can you list the exact specs of the video you are uploading and the platform you are uploading it from and viewing it from?
How long is the video? I've uploaded 1080p a few hours long and it took me longer than 7h to have it ready for 1080p. So I can only guess that if it's several hours long, 4k will take a lot of time.
Up to 48 hours, I've had 1440p videos take 10 hours before full resolution is available
Give it plenty of time, if the problem is still there is lean towards the other suggestions around incompatability
What's the bitrate you are uploading with? If it is too low your material won't get higher resolutions. Also, some browsers won't show a 4k option if you don't have a 4k monitor with standard settings. So you might check another platform/browser to check your video.
Also, with vimeo you'd have to have a premium subscription with unlimited data to be able to upload larger 4k files. An hour of 4k can easily be 30gb of data. So it might be you exported a 4k video with a way too small bitrate, which would make the videos very blurry.
Thanks for the input. As I said, I’m very new to all of this and don’t even know what the bitrate is. Jeez i feel stupid. But I’m trying to do all of this on an iPhone XS because I don’t have a computer capable of this. The video is only 16 minutes long, mostly just a bunch of 30sec-1min long vids from the crowd that came out really good due to the XS camera, but it annoys me that I haven’t been able to find a way to share them with people without them looking like utter shit. Also, after a full day of my test video being uploaded (30 sec, 4k 60fps), YouTube still only showed the “1080p60” option, whereas Vimeo only shows up to “720p”. I’ve exported it in 4k and 1080 thru iMovie, and theres a very noticable difference between the two, so i think its exporting them correctly.
The bitrate is the setting that defines how much data is used for a video per second. The higher the bitrate the more information per second will be saved, and the better the video quality will be. How good a bitrate works also depends on the video codec that is used. You will always use a codec for compression on a phone or action cam, as raw (uncompressed) video uses a crazy amount of space that would fill big SD cards quickly.
So, you have to check the settings on your phone at two points: What is the bitrate during shooting the video in 4k/60fps? (The codec should be chosen automatically.)
And what is the bitrate of the video you deliver with iMovie? Make sure that it is at least 63000kbit per second for 4k/60fps (a lower bitrate will disable 4k resolution on youtube). Also make sure to select a good video codec for compression, (usually h.264/h.265 on PC, but the phone could be optimized for another codec that works better, so look into the manual for that).
At those settings a video of 15 minutes would be around 7.5 gigabytes in data for me, which is quite large. And depending on upload speed of your internet connection the upload can take a long time. Chosing the wrong codec will make your video look bad even if it is that big of a file.
You should be able to find out the bitrates of the video you produced or uploaded already in the properties of the video file
What are your export settings? You edited in iMovie right? Must be an export setting there got changed somewhere during editing.
