How to Play Co-op in Elden Ring

TL;DR

  • Use the Furlcalling Finger Remedy and Gold Summon Sign for co-op.
  • Co-op is mainly for assisting with bosses and dungeon exploration.

Setting Up Co-op

To initiate co-op in Elden Ring, players need specific items and follow certain steps. The host player must use a Furlcalling Finger Remedy to see summon signs left by other players. The player wishing to join places a Gold Summon Sign using the Tarnished's Furled Finger [4:1]. These items can be found early in the game, allowing you to start co-op almost immediately [4:3].

Co-op Mechanics

Elden Ring's co-op system is designed primarily for assistance rather than continuous play. Once summoned, a player can help the host explore areas, fight enemies, and defeat bosses. However, after defeating a boss or if either player dies, the summoned player will return to their own world, requiring re-summoning to continue playing together [5:1][5:2]. This means that while you can play together frequently, it's not possible to remain continuously connected throughout the entire game.

Progression and Limitations

In co-op mode, only the host makes progress in terms of story and loot collection. The summoned player's progress remains unchanged until they complete the same tasks in their own world [5:2][5:5]. Additionally, players cannot summon their mounts during co-op, which can make traversing the large game world slower. Therefore, it is often recommended to use co-op for challenging sections like bosses or dungeons [5:3].

Community and Resources

For those looking to enhance their co-op experience or find partners, joining online communities such as r/CypherRing or dedicated Discord servers can be beneficial [1:1]. These platforms offer opportunities to connect with other players, share tips, and organize co-op sessions.

That's how online works. Each section is separated. If you want to play with your friend in the new section, your friend needs to enter it in their game, place the sign down, and you need to accept it in the new zone.

How to play coop

I played Elden Ring a while ago and now I'm back to play with a friend, but I have no idea how to do this and how co-op works, since we want to complete it together, we're on the PS4 base version of the game

It’s really tedious if you actually want to play most of the game co-op I would just clear caves and dungeons together while fighting the occasional boss fight👍 https://youtu.be/EqbqId-2STI?si=hpKBFmBgthuSocZ9 it would take too long to explain everything so here’s a link

Ps4/ps5: Press start and look for multi-player tab. Make sure you're far enough into the game so you have the right items and crafting to start multi-player. ("Eardleaf flower" to craft "furlcalling finger remedy".) Then make a sure you adjust the password so you can enter each other's world and not some random strangers

(don't forget to delete the password after!!! Makes multi-player impossible until you delete the password after)

Also look for summoning icon statues, "y crucifix", they're waist high. That's usually where you put your sign down/ finger remedy.

Nearly immediately you can coop

1 upvotes on reddit
BuffooPengoo · 3 years ago

You can coop first by having 1 person place a gold/red summon sign. This is the person coming to help/duel said new friend.

New friend will need to use a furlcalling finger remedy to summon you. If you die or fast travel the effect will need to be refreshed, otherwise is a permanent effect (you can also manually deactivate it)

The Gold Summon Sign item can be found just at the start of the game before leaving the tutorial area up the elevator. The remedy to needed to summon can easily be crafted using 2 erdleafs flowers.

Have fun y'all! Definitely check out the Elden Ring wiki from fextralife. There should be a multiplayer section to cover anything I missed.

Explain Co-op to me

Is it possible to play this game together all the time?

So you can summon your friend into your world(or vice versa) and play together, explore, fight etc. But once you guys Beata boss or one of you dies, the summoned player will go back to their world and need to be resummoned.

Furthermore, game progress is only made by the host(the one not being summoned). And to progress the other player will also have to play in their world as well.

You will most likely be able to play coop throughout the vast majority of the game, with the main hub being an exception.

3 upvotes on reddit
Tough-Reading9810 · 3 years ago

you'll be able to play coop almost anywhere, the host will gain the pogress, but you won't be able to summon your mount while in coop and the world is huge, so it's best to just summon before a boss or in a dungeon or you'll be spending a lot of time walking around when you could be on horseback

First off, welcome to the Souls universe!

So how co-op works is that you’ll summon your friend to assist you up to the boss, then they’ll automatically leave the party. Then your friend will summon you to complete his boss and same thing, you’ll leave the party.

Co-op in the Souls universe is really there for the summoned person to assist the host in slaying the boss. Then you’ll do the same for your friend. My friend and I have played all of the Souls games together and we love it.

So can you play the game together all the time? Not so much in way you may think but at the same time yes; whoever is summoned will assist you in killing your boss, then you’ll have your friend summon you to help assist in slaying his and this is what you’ll do the entire game.

  • put cross-region play to perform matchmaking

I honestly don't know what to do.

I have NG+7 and I maxed out my character and I got the DLC too.

My friend just started playing elden ring and needs helps so I just want to co-op.

Assuming you've checked all the other stuff people have suggested, platform is an important factor. I've joined other players from mid NG levels when they were new, so I don't think it's that. Despite looking like a beautiful online game, all of Fromsoft's games are mostly powered by the client-side, not the server (which handles basic matchmaking, messages etc). This means that if your machines and networks have some kind of connection issue, you're going to have problems. Your machines are directly connecting to each other for the game. Test if they can join you, aka is the problem one-way only. On XBOX, you can go into the settings and test whether your NAT type is open or not. You can then follow steps to force your NAT type open. I'm not sure exactly how this works on PC as, whilst I play on PC, I've never had any similar issues

Additional-Month5721 · OP · 8 months ago

we both play on steam and we both don't have internet issues since we're connected to the same one. My friend can see other players but not me

1 upvotes on reddit
embersmolder · 8 months ago

Can you also see other players, but not your friend? By the way being connected via the same network / IP can sometimes cause problems. For example on XBOX there are settings you have to configure, so that your various XBOXes (same network) don't read as the same machines. Usually speaking I don't think that would be an issue with PCs, but these things can actually have an impact and confuse packets in terms of where they are routed to. Keep testing and also check differences in AV / anti-malware deployment, firewalls etc (running on each local machine)

how do I co-op?

Posted by ImNot-aBlackGuy · in r/Eldenring · 2 years ago

Me and my brother both have all online setting placed where it should enable online play. Our passwords set perfectly the same, no sign. added a group pw after that, no sign. We both started new games with only 3 level difference, we have tried him using the furled finger and I use the finger remedy and vice versa, no sign. Both went to the Grove side cave to activate that summoning pool along with the one by the first step, but nothing. What are we doing wrong?

Edit: I play on my other character at lvl 200 doing pvp just fine and all my settings are exactly the same (beside the pw but I don't use one for pvp-ing)

2nd edit: we've tried without the group password also, in fact most of the time trying we had nothing set for a group pw, we're both brand new characters only having just gotten torrent, he's spoken to ranni, I haven't yet. He's on a PS5 while I'm on PS4, could this be the issue?

Being on different console generations could be the issue, but shouldn't be since Xbox one can play with Xbox series s. When using passwords do you put it in the multiplayer slot or just group? That makes a difference too.

1 upvotes on reddit
ImNot-aBlackGuy · OP · 2 years ago

Just the multiplayer, then both, then tried just group. None of the three worked

1 upvotes on reddit
[deleted] · 2 years ago

What locations have you tried? If inside the stormveil castle, you'll only be able to as long as godrick isn't dead on that character. Out in the wild you should be able to summon anywhere. A good spot to test is to both be at the church of elleh, place the summons sign near where you talk to ranni, and see if the remedy user can see it there. Use the multiplayer password, remember if there is letters involved it has to match case not just letter. If that fails, then I don't really know what could be wrong

Group password is useless, the boss needs to be alive for the one summoning and if you're on console make sure you both have the paid online on

Group password to see more bloodstains, messages and get runes bonuses from people in the Group

Multiplayer password to play with specific people

Everything sounds good not really sure what is happening still, id suggest just placing your sign all over the place see if that changes anything

Be at the right level and upgrade range for the content you want to do. That's the hardest part, any content you've done you're rapidly getting too high level to be summoned to do again unless you intentionally slow yourself.

Use the effigy, not the fingers. It puts summon signs at nearby/all summoning pools you activated. That gives you the most coverage.

Also, being at a meta soul level can help keep you in range with more of the playerbase. Such as level 150.

What Is the Multiplayer Experience Like in Elden Ring ps5

Posted by DearAd2201 · in r/EldenRingHelp · 5 months ago

Hi all,

I am thinking of getting this game for a friend I often play online games with, I've played the game quite a bit but have never dabled in its multiplayer.

I cannot find a consice answer online so i'm turning to you guys; How is the multiplayer experience in this game and is it possible to both progress when questing or slaying bosses? How does loot work ( I know the summoned player gets less Runes, but how about items and crafting materials)?

Is it viable to play Elden Ring in its entirety with 2 people (do dungeons, bosses etc.)?

I am aware of a mod that allows for a better co-op experience but that will not be an option as we will play on playstation.

It works fine. It’s a lot of fun. Summoned players do not get items except regenerating crafting items like some fruits/flowers and herbs.

Yes you can do the lot with two players, you’ll just need to switch worlds after each boss and defeat it twice.

Sometimes the multiplayer summon doesn’t work, (worst on weekends) and after months of experimentation I simply cannot offer any advice other than to get your partner to put their sign down first, as that at least speeds everything up for the inevitable 8+ retries. Also the summonee restarting the game might help, hard to tell. We had months of issues and tried the scientific method to diagnose, but it never made sense. However, it always worked eventually. Frustrating sometimes though, especially when invaded and killed after 10 retries only to have to go and try for a connection again. Might be a regional thing.

Defeating some bosses twice seems hellish, Sound like it would be a slog to get through the whole game like that but I guess we can do bosses together. Thanks!

1 upvotes on reddit
meowsqueak · 5 months ago

It's not as bad as you think - because the summoned player only has half the flasks, the approach to each fight has to change (unless you're playing the exact same builds). This makes the combat much more interesting because you get to see a whole different side of the fight.

And you can always summon a third human co-operator if you need to (be aware that bosses get harder the more co-op players/NPCs you have in the fight - sometimes it's actually easier to just solo them).

And in-between co-op sessions you can run around solo and clean up dungeons, find items, talk to NPCs, etc. There's lots to do.

I think, all up, Elden Ring co-op is one of the best co-op experiences I've ever had. The only downer was the persistent and annoying network issues.

how to play co-op in elden ring

Here are the key steps to play co-op in Elden Ring:

  1. Ensure You Have the Right Items:

    • Furlcalling Finger Remedy: This item allows you to see summon signs left by other players. You can craft it using the flowers found in the game.
    • Tarnished’s Furled Finger: This item lets you place your summon sign on the ground for others to summon you.
  2. Choose the Right Area:

    • Co-op can only be initiated in certain areas of the game. Make sure you are in a location where multiplayer is enabled (not in boss fights or certain restricted areas).
  3. Summoning a Player:

    • Use the Furlcalling Finger Remedy to see summon signs from other players. Look for the gold signs on the ground.
    • Approach a summon sign and interact with it to summon that player into your game.
  4. Joining Another Player:

    • To join another player's game, drop your Tarnished’s Furled Finger sign in the area where you want to be summoned.
    • The host player will need to use the Furlcalling Finger Remedy to see your sign.
  5. Co-op Limitations:

    • You can summon up to two players for co-op.
    • You cannot summon players if you are in a boss fight or if you have already defeated the area boss.
  6. Communication and Strategy:

    • Use voice chat or in-game gestures to communicate with your co-op partners for better coordination during fights.

Recommendation: If you're new to co-op gameplay, consider teaming up with friends for a smoother experience. This allows for better communication and strategy, making challenging bosses and areas more manageable. Enjoy exploring the vast world of Elden Ring together!
