What Redditors are Saying

How to Safely Bandage a Cut

TL;DR

  • Clean the wound, apply an antibiotic ointment, and use a bandage or dressing that suits the size and location of the cut. If you don't have medical supplies, consider DIY alternatives like butterfly closures made from tape.

Cleaning the Wound

Before applying any bandage, it's crucial to clean the wound thoroughly. Use water or a saline solution to rinse away dirt and bacteria [1:1]. In some discussions, people used alcohol for disinfection, but be cautious as it can sting and irritate the skin [5:7]. After cleaning, dry the area gently with a clean cloth or paper towel [3:2].

Choosing the Right Bandage

For smaller cuts, a simple adhesive bandage (bandaid) is often sufficient [1:1]. For larger or awkwardly placed cuts, consider using gauze pads secured with medical tape or elastic bandages [2:2]. If the cut is on a moving part of the body, such as the face, it might be necessary to use a face mask temporarily to keep it protected [3:2].

Using Ointments and Preventing Sticking

Applying an antibiotic ointment like Neosporin can help prevent infection and promote healing [5:5]. To prevent the bandage from sticking to the wound, you can apply a thin layer of Vaseline on the gauze [4:1]. This also keeps the wound moist, which aids in faster healing.

DIY Alternatives

If you lack proper medical supplies, there are several DIY methods you can use. Butterfly closures or wound closure strips can be made from duct tape to hold the edges of a cut together [5:2]. Some users suggested using super glue mixed with antibiotic ointment for minor cuts, although this should be done with caution [5:3], [5:9].

Special Considerations

For facial cuts, where movement can easily reopen the wound, maintaining pressure and allowing it to scab naturally might be necessary [3:3]. Also, if you're dealing with self-harm wounds, consider reaching out for support and guidance on both physical and emotional healing [1:2].

ORIGINAL POST

Ok so basically I’ve never taken proper care of my self harm. But this time I relapsed and I want to bandage my wounds properly for my boyfriend. He bought me a med kit and said I didn’t have to use it but I could. And I want to but I honestly don’t know how.. should I just apply a bandaid or does it need to be wrapped? Idkidkidk I’m probably overthinking this I just want to do what’s best. I’m already so disappointed in myself for relapsing. Also it’s nothing too deep soo maybe just a bandaid will do?

A bandaid is a great start, but a wrap is okay too- whichever is more comfortable! I usually only use wraps when I don’t have bandaids big enough, or if a bandaid would impede mobility. Most cuts are pretty easy to care for, just a good rinse and a bandage (with a spot of antibiotic ointment if you have it). For bigger ones that gape open, you can use medical tape or steri strips to close the gape and minimize scarring.

It’s always a good idea to bandage wounds because it helps prevent infection and has the added bonus of being a bit of padding in case you run into something (and idk about you, but imo nothing sucks more than slamming fresh cuts directly into a doorframe or something)

I put a bandaid on the biggest ones for now and will probably ask my boyfriend to help wrap it up tmmrw before I go to work. Its been a bit since I last properly cut so I’ve never went to my current job with any fresh cuts. I’m incredibly anxious. Your advice makes me feel more secure though thanks a lot! <3

I can't use any medical supplies too. I always cut a piece of thick paper or toilet paper. Use tape to hold it to your skin so the blood doesn't seep through to your clothes, or apply pressure to it with your underwear. I recommend wearing black clothing, since if the bleeding if too much, it'll probably seep through the paper.

The most I’ve done is tape toilet paper on my thigh and arm bc it wouldn’t stop bleeding but I usually js put my clothes over it and leave it

How can i bandage up a cut in my face?

Posted by Enridrug · in r/selfharm · 2 years ago

I dont have dressings or any of that, probably shouldve bought a first aid kit, anyway, now its too late, the cut is horizontal across my nose from cheekbone to cheekbone, i assume deep enough to leave a permanent scar. What can i do? I used a razor blade btw.

It does bleed but i guess thats given

without a bandage i’d suggest just putting a thin layer of vaseline/neosporin over it and reapplying when it dries or gets rubbed off, as long as the wound is no deeper than shallow dermis (which i’m guessing it is because it’s across your face)

1 upvotes on reddit

How do i stop the bleeding effectively, otherwise i cant put vaseline on. I use paper towels rn but its still bleeding a bit

1 upvotes on reddit

Apply pressure with the paper towel. It will probably reopen with talking or moving your face. You can wear a face mask if you need to go out (to get first aid supplies), but it most likely will not stay closed unless bandaged because of all the movement of the area.

1 upvotes on reddit
alyssalovecats · 2 years ago

pressure, if the paper towel is ripping at the scab then wet it first, or you can just let it scab up on its own (which will be more of a hassle tbh)

So I don’t own actual bandages but I’ve been doing my best. Whenever I try take/replace the bandages they just rip the scab off. Am I doing something wrong? If anybody knows I’d appreciate it. It is a beans cut btw and I know stitches would be ideal but it’s been a week I can’t get them and I’m kinda getting tired of this thing not healing. Tysm! <3

Clarification: i disinfected it with alcohol and its not a deep cut just a long cut from shaving only on the surface no need for sutures at all just didnt want blood to leak all over the place

14 upvotes on reddit
goldenbugreaction · 7 months ago

You may not need sutures but it is still important to keep the wound edges on either side of the laceration as close together and immobile as possible for optimal healing and minimal scarring.

Wound closure strips or butterfly closures are your friends. If you find that whatever ointment you put on it is keeping them from sticking, you can diy your own butterfly strips from duct tape, or whatever you have on hand.

Use neosporin or a generic equivalent until the wound is closed. We are in the modern world, you should not be bandaging a large cut without something to kill the bacteria festering inside regularly.

After washing and drying the area good. Use super glue with some antibiotic ointment mixed in.

An old body man's remedy for cuts was MEK on a rag and then duct tape. He swore it would kill anything.

Duct tape is fine but you should at least use sterile gauze or a bandad and antiseptix.

I didnt clarify it enough, its a thin cut from shaving with a straight razor just long. The cut is 30% of the length of the tape just taped it alot

Cauterize it on the flat top!

I literally had a similar cut and they did stitch it but the doctor said I could’ve just super glued it. Just make sure it’s on the outside of the wound mostly. You’re body will naturally purge any foreign substance so if you get a little bit in the wound it’ll be fine.

Multiple thin layers applied with a H2O2 sanitized and dried toothpick worked for me. Use(d) gorilla glue.

2 upvotes on reddit
azajay · 5 years ago

Well, it's basically the same process as cutting it, but instead of a knife going into your skin it's glue. Sanitize your finger first.

Also wrap a bag around your hand and make it air tight with a rubber band when you shower, and put a cot on the finger and wear a glove at work. It's not hard to keep it dry.

Super glue & get back to work. Just because your new knife demanded a blood sacrifice doesn't mean the butternut squash are going to cut themselves.

gbpls92 · OP · 5 years ago

Still haven’t stepped off the line trust me haha. Do you super glue over the open tissue or what? The main concern was a bacteria infection which is why the strips were in use so it could still “breathe” but be almost closed.

2 upvotes on reddit
[deleted] · 5 years ago

Yeah, just think of it like a liquid bandage. Aside from decades in the kitchen I was also ski patrol, wilderness EMT as a volunteer side gig. That "needs to breathe" wives tale needs to die. Wounds do not need to breathe. There's nasty shit in the air that you don't want in there. The "needs to breathe" idea came from having a bandage on too long & having condensation build up, making the gauze damp. That would harbor more bacteria than was just in the air. Even with bandages, they just need changed frequently so that doesn't happen in the first place. If the skin starts to get moist, the bandage was not changed quickly enough. If the skin looks like you just got out of the pool, it needs dried out cause the bandage was left on WAY too long.

A lot of modern ER's use super glue as liquid stitches... and charge you hundreds of dollars for it (thanks insurance companies). If it's fresh, let it bleed a bit to make sure nothing is in there (that goes triple for puncture wounds, let those bleed to self clean). Then pinch it together as best you can while applying a little super glue just to the cut. When that dries go over it to help hold it together.

If it's not so fresh, the damage is already done. Lay down a thin layer over the exposed dermis & build a few thin layers over that as they dry. The key, fresh or not, is to apply in thin layers that dry all the way. One thick layer or even 2 isn't going to hold or dry.

First Aid Supplies

Posted by MomsUrUncle · in r/selfharm · 2 months ago

Here’s a list of first aid supplies for those who need it. Feel free to add your own in the comments! (This is not intended to replace actual medical advice, but rather to provide harm reduction and promote self care.)

BleedStop or QuikClot: Used to stop heavy bleeding fast. Can be purchased at most drugstores / in pharmaceutical sections. Not for regular use, but great for an emergency until medical help can arrive. PLEASE keep one of these on hand— it’s basically Narcan for cutters.

Non-stick Gauze: Used to keep an open wound covered and protected from debris/bacteria. Non-stick will prevent the material from sticking in the wound, but you can also add a thin layer of Vaseline or antibiotic ointment to the wound-side of regular gauze to prevent it from sticking.

Menstrual/Period Pads (a budget-friendly alternative to gauze): If you’re broke like me, period pads are super absorbent, leak-proof, and do not stick in wounds. You can cut them down to the size/shape you need and sometimes make several “bandages” out of one pad. I recommend thin ones with high absorption. Also great if you’re looking for something that won’t seem suspicious in your bathroom cabinet.

Medical Tape: Used to secure bandages/gauze in place. I’ve tried MANY brands of tape, but my hands-down favorite is Nexcare Gentle Paper Tape. Great for sensitive skin, and it actually stays on through a sweaty 8hr shift at work.

Wound Closures (Steri-Strips): Used to pull gaping wounds together for faster healing. If you’re on a budget, the paper tape I’ve recommended above can actually be used in the same way, albeit it may not stay secure for as long as Steri-Strips would.

Tegaderm/Saniderm: A bit pricey, but these are entirely waterproof and leakproof. They can also be left on for multiple days, so they’re really great for vacations or if you struggle with self care. (My only hesitation would be that if you don’t have the area thoroughly sterilized, you risk trapping the bacteria under the bandage where it will then have difficulty draining. Please, please, please read the application instructions before use.)

Saline/Wound Wash: Used to rinse debris and pathogens from wounds. I’ve read this can be very helpful for burns in particular. However, some wound washes are only meant for dermal wounds and should not be used if deeper tissue is exposed, so please read the label (or research the product online) before use.

Antibiotic Ointment: Used to prevent/reduce infection. However, you may look into the overuse of antibiotic ointment before you go slathering it on every wound. Overuse could cause you to develop antibiotic-resistant bacteria, which can lead to life-threatening infections. Also, antibiotic ointment can only do so much. If the redness/irritation doesn’t clear up after a couple of days (or gets worse), you need actual antibiotics prescribed by a doctor.

Hydrocortisone Cream: Used to sooth dry or itchy skin. This works great for mild irritation from medical tape or bandaids, as well as fully-healed scars when they get tight or itchy. However, hydrocortisone cream should never be used on/in wounds, on broken skin, or on infected areas.

Isopropyl Alcohol (Rubbing Alcohol): Used to disinfect around wounds. Please do NOT put it in your wound in an attempt to disinfect it— that’s what saline/wound wash is for. Isopropyl alcohol kills germs by breaking down their cell membranes, and it can do the same to your exposed healthy cells, which will increase your risk for infection and slow the healing process. However it’s perfectly safe on unbroken skin, and I would highly recommend lightly washing around your wounds with isopropyl alcohol at least once a day to reduce risk of infection. You can do this by soaking a clean cloth or paper towel and gently wiping around the wound. For maximum effectiveness, let the area air dry so the alcohol has contact with your skin for as long as possible.

Cotton Balls/Cotton Pads/Paper Towels/Clean Cloth: You need to be cleaning around your wounds regularly to prevent infection. You can use any of the materials listed, but just make sure they’re clean and haven’t been previously used. As recommended above, isopropyl alcohol is a good choice, but you can also use a mild soap so long as you keep it out of any open wounds and thoroughly rinse the residue.

Most of these items can be purchased at drugstores (such as CVS or Walgreens) or in the wellness section of retailers like Walmart, Target, or Kroger. That being said, almost anything can be purchased online. (Tip for those in shared-living situations: you can ship packages to UPS stores for a small holding fee. Amazon also has pickup lockers in many metropolitan areas and they will typically hold packages for up to 72 hours— plus the pickup process is a breeze.)

All that said, if your wound becomes hot to the touch, develops any sort of rash or visible irritation, smells abnormal, or leaks a non-clear yellowish or greenish fluid, you’re dealing with an infection and need medical help. You cannot fix it yourself and it will not go away on its own. Please see a doctor.

Please feel free to add to this list in the comments or make brand recommendations!

I hear people say dont use toilet paper bc first its not stored on the best places and second pieces can get stuck and u can get infected. I heard that u shouldn't use alcohol bc it delays healing, causes pain and irritation, and increases risk of scarring. Use soap and water, or saline. For the scar use clean cloth/gauze.

generally, i will just tell you to stop cutting. it’s really addictive. however this is not a perfect world and telling someone to stop won’t always work. if at all possible, never do it again, but if you can’t/won’t stop, i can help you be safer. while alcohol is ok to disinfect, it kills your cells too. try to rinse with soap and water, as well as adding antibiotic cream or vaseline. use gauze or something alike with tape to secure it but bandaids work ok also. change daily until it scabs or heals over. if you do go deep, like to beans, try to go to the hospital or get steri strips/butterfly bandaids. if you are confused about anything, reach out to me. stay safe :)

How to safely bandage a cut

Here are the key steps to safely bandage a cut:

  1. Wash Your Hands: Always start by washing your hands thoroughly with soap and water to prevent infection.

  2. Stop the Bleeding:

    • Apply gentle pressure with a clean cloth or bandage directly on the cut.
    • Elevate the area above the heart if possible to help reduce bleeding.
  3. Clean the Wound:

    • Once bleeding has stopped, rinse the cut under clean, running water to remove dirt and debris.
    • Use mild soap around the area, but avoid getting soap directly in the wound.
  4. Disinfect:

    • Apply an antiseptic solution (like hydrogen peroxide or iodine) to the cut to kill any remaining bacteria.
  5. Apply a Sterile Bandage:

    • Use a sterile adhesive bandage or gauze pad. If using gauze, secure it with medical tape.
    • Ensure the bandage covers the entire cut and is snug but not too tight.
  6. Change the Bandage:

    • Change the bandage daily or whenever it becomes wet or dirty.
    • Re-clean the wound each time you change the bandage.
  7. Monitor for Infection:

    • Watch for signs of infection, such as increased redness, swelling, warmth, or pus. If these occur, seek medical attention.

Important Tips:

  • Avoid using cotton balls or non-sterile materials that can leave fibers in the wound.
  • If the cut is deep, won't stop bleeding, or shows signs of infection, consult a healthcare professional.

By following these steps, you can effectively and safely bandage a cut to promote healing and prevent infection.
