How to Treat a Deep Cut

Immediate Steps

When dealing with a deep cut, the first step is to stop the bleeding. Apply pressure using a clean cloth or bandage and elevate the injured area above your heart if possible [2:1][5:3]. If the bleeding doesn't stop or if blood is pulsating, indicating a potential artery injury, seek medical attention immediately [4:1][4:2].

Cleaning and Closing the Wound

Once the bleeding has slowed or stopped, gently clean the wound with warm water to remove any debris [5:1]. Avoid using alcohol or hydrogen peroxide as they can damage tissue. After cleaning, dry the area carefully and consider using steri strips or butterfly bandages to close the wound if it's gaping [3:1][5:2]. Steri strips are available at most pharmacies and can be made from medical tape or bandaids if necessary [5:12].

Monitoring and Care

Keep the wound clean and covered with a sterile bandage. Change the bandage regularly and watch for signs of infection such as increased redness, swelling, or pus [1:2][5:1]. Applying an antibiotic ointment can help prevent infection [4:1].

When to Seek Medical Help

If the cut is very deep, shows fat or muscle tissue, or continues to bleed despite applying pressure, it's crucial to seek professional medical care [3:1][4:4]. Additionally, if you experience numbness or cannot control the bleeding, go to a hospital [3:4][4:6].

Emotional Support

It's important to address the emotional aspect of self-harm. Finding someone trustworthy to talk to can be beneficial [5:3]. Remember, you're not alone, and reaching out for support is a positive step [5:11].

ORIGINAL POST

I just did the deepest cut I've ever done and blood is gushing from it. I'm keeping pressure on it and it's starting to slow down but I'm panicking. I didn't realize I was going that deep. It didn't even hurt. I know it's going to scar really bad and I don't want to have to hide it. How do I make it heal fast and scar as little as possible. I don't have any stuff to use and I can't go to the store without my parents knowing. Also clear stuff is oozing out of it. Its gaping open even if I don't pull on my skin. I'm sorry for rambling.

Edit: It's not rlly bleeding anymore so it's probably fine. I just wanted to say that before people assume I'm hurt bad or something. I might've made it sound worse than it is. If I did, I'm sorry. (I didn't lie about what it looks like but it must've not been that bad if it's not bleeding anymore.)

don't your parents have a grievance that you can take in a first aid kit or cabinet or something. I stole steri-strips to keep the gap closed but I especially recommend rinsing well with clean water and disinfecting with a spray or something. then when the wound is closed and does not plan to open again soon, apply a good cream. scar ointment or I use calendula ointment. but I myself never see what happens to the scars because I go over them again and again... Stay save! 💙

Coming out fast. It’s definitely not an artery or anything. It’s bleeding much slower now.

Okay deep breaths. The first thing you need to do is not panic. I know it’s terrifying but you can do this. If you can, get a washcloth or a paper towel and wet it with cold water. Hold it over the cut for a while and apply pressure. You’re gonna need to look for either a large bandage or some gauze. If you have gauze, cut a square so it will cover the cut comfortably, then apply some antibiotics and tape the gauze on or wrap an ace bandage around it to hold it in place. You could also cut the toes off of a sock and pull it over to hold it on as well, or wear tight pants if it’s on your leg. After that you’re gonna drink water and try to sleep. You can do this.

I cut to deep

Posted by Different_Sky8954 · in r/selfharm · 5 months ago

I dont know what happened but I got a panic attack of sorts and my mind was racing so I just took a razor and pressed it into my arm. I only used a pretty blunt boxcutter before and while I went deep with that it was no comparison. I didnt think it would turn out like this its not big only about 2cm longs but I could see inside. I dont know what to do know I covered it with a bandaid but its bleeding heavily. I dont know if this is serious im freaking out it just went right trough. I only had a small look at it until blood came out but it seemed to be about 5-6 mm deep its on my left forearm. I the area around it is kinda numb. Please help me

go to the hospital please if it’s numb and won’t stop bleeding if it was just one then you can lie your way out of getting sent to the hospital but you don’t want to bleed out or lose your arm

It stopped bleeding for now and the numbness went away. I guess I overreacted I didnt think it would cut that deep when I look at it now its only about 1-2 mm deep so I didnt cut as deep as I thought

If you're seeing fat, its recommended to go to a medical professional to get it stitched. If thats not the case, try to close it up with (makeshift) steristrips and a bandage. You can make your own steristrips by cutting medical tape or a bandaid in strips. Pull the edges of the wound together and put a steristrip on, repeat untill its closed up. Dont take the steristrips off for at least 10 days, if you do the wound might open up again. Usually they fall off themselves.

Thanks for the advice I really appreciate it but its not as serious as I thought I guess. It stopped bleeding and the numbness went away its also not as deep as I thought I couldn’t really tell but it appears to only be 1-2 mm wich is nowhere near what I thought

Was it spraying and was the blood pulsating with your heart? If so, you hit an arteriol or an artery, which definitely needs medical attention

Please go to the doctor

1 upvotes on reddit
SirLlama123 · 6 months ago

Okay, first off is the blood pulseing like spewing with a rhythm. If yes you really need to go to the doctor, you hit an artery. If not clean up as best you can, use some neo sporin if you have, and then if you can make it to the store get steri strips and bandages. If not make your own as seen here some sort of compression fitting will help stop it bleeding. maybe cut the end off a sock and pull it up your limb or leggings or an ace bandage.

Has the bleeding stopped? Could you describe the cut, or what you saw inside of it?

It’s always best to get medical care if possible, but if not, just focus on taking care of yourself as best you can. Clean the area gently with some warm water, pat dry, and close with steri strips or medical tape if it’s gaping. I know it’s scary but try to take a deep breath, you’ll be okay.

I haven't washed it

I have plaster tape rn in my room can I use it Where can I get steri strips?

23 upvotes on reddit
I
injury_minded · 2 years ago

White/pink is probably dermis, so you most likely don’t need stitches, fortunately. You’re gonna want to stop the bleeding before you do anything else, so keep holding the cloth to the cut and elevate the area so the cut is above your heart. Just maintain pressure until the bleeding has completely stopped, and don’t life the cloth to check on it until you’re certain it’s stopped.

Steri strips are available at most pharmacies and in the first aid section of grocery stores or other big box stores (walmart, target, etc). Sometimes they’re called butterfly bandages, but either one will work fine. Medical tape is a good compromise if you can’t find any, and you can use it basically the same way, but do wait for the bleeding to stop before trying to bandage yourself up.

Successful-Injury881 · 2 years ago

I hope the bleeding has stopped and you are OK. I know it's easy to say, but try not to panic if you find d yourself in the same situation again, keep calm, put some sort of clean cloth or bandage over it, apply pressure (I know its hard when it hurts, but it's important to do) and if its on your arm, lift your arm up and hold it there to try and slow the blood flow. I hope you have someone you can trust and talk to, and don't beat yourself up for self harming, you really aren't alone.

The bleeding has slowed down but I don't thinkt it stopped the cloth is sticking to the blood

2 upvotes on reddit
Successful-Injury881 · 2 years ago

Sorry, I have only just seen your reply. The cloth will stuck to it, if you need to change it use warm water to remove it, thus will probably cause it to bleed again, if it does put a clean cloth on it and hold your arm up and apply pressure. I hope you are doing OK.

how deep are you talking? here are some things to do:

  1. pressure to stop the bleeding. if you have gauze, USE IT. if you don't, a clean rag or (not nearly as recommended) paper towels work in a pinch. don't use toilet paper or tissues, they tear too easy when wet. hold it onto the wound firmly and don't peek at it. once you're SURE the bleeding has stopped, you can remove but be so careful.
  2. do you have any saline solution? i would really recommend washing it out with that. don't use things like nasal spray or contact solution even if it says saline. pure saline solution only. you can also make your own! 1/2 tsp salt for 1 cup of distilled water. you can make distilled water. i know you're in a pinch right now, so boiling some water instead could be fine.
  3. keep it covered. deep wounds are very prone to infection. wrap it up.

you should go to the hospital if it is ANY one of the following things: appears to be gaping, won't stop bleeding, is down to the fat layer, won't appear closed when you try to push it together, nicked/severed any veins or especially arteries, etc. generally, if you cut deep, you'll want to go to the hospital asap.

To stop bleeding, put pressure on wound for 15 minutes, if it does not stop bleeding go to the hospital. If the blood is pulsing, it's either an artery or an arteriole, if it's an artery you can bleed out in five minutes without pressure and you urgently need medical help if you do.

If it's a vein or an arteriole, even if the bleeding stops they tear open easily and you will be losing more blood than you should be, so unless you're literally unable it's very recommended to go to the hospital.

If you hit hypodermis/beans, it is highly recommended to get stitches within an 8 hour window after making the cut. Anything below beans is 100% time to seek medical help, it's untreatable at home without severe risk of infection and generally at that depth you're very at risk of hitting important structures like blood vessels, nerves, muscle, tendons...

As for treatment of beans past heavily recommended visit to the hospital for stitches - within 8 hour window if you can't get stiches use steri strips or butterfly bandages, put topical cream on bandage and bandage the cut all the while keeping an eye out for infection. Steri strips and butterfly bandages are also good for dermis-level gaping wounds.

I am by no means a doctor so take this with a grain of salt, but I know you should take a clean towel and apply pressure to stop the bleeding, you should really use a towel, but if you're going to use a paper product don't use toilet paper. If the cut has reached subcutaneous tissue, (aka hypodermis or "beans") or deeper that does require stitches. I have heard of people hitting hypodermis and going to the er and they just apply a butterfly bandage, but it's better safe than sorry. I don't have the best advice for aftercare because I've never gone too deep but I've heard you should clean the outside of the wound with unscented soap and water, and then apply an antibiotic ointment of some kind (like neosporan), and if you want I use antisceptic sometimes. As for bandaging I don't think I have any good advice or tips because I don't really know but I do know butterfly bandages are good for anything gaping and you can make a makeshift one with two bandaids. Good Luck! You can find some really good aftercare tips on here and also tumblr which I really recommend because they probably describe it a lot better than me. Again I'm by no means a doctor, these are all just thing's I have heard and picked up on, stay safe!

I just had a look. Keep it covered, change the bandaid every few days or when it starts to come off and make sure to clean the wound when you do. If you have some antiseptic cream then you can dab a little onto the inside of the bandaid.

If you can find something to close it with then that would be ideal but it will heal ok if you don't, it will just take a long time (a month+) and will leave a big scar. I used to use small strips of medical tape to close mine and then stick a bandaid on top.

How do you take care of a deep cut yourself? And how much do doctors need to do if you're a kid?

Posted by Rhiz2 · in r/Advice · 4 years ago

Yo. Sorry the titles worded like that. I'll get right down to the fat (hehe): I cut the shit out of myself. I do it every now and then, but this time I went a bit uhh. Overboard. And now I have a fat fucking gash on my wrist. Its about 4cm long, bit under 1cm cm wide. I can see some jelly type shit in there (beans looking), not sure if it's fat.

Anyway. Question number 1: can I take care of this myself? It's not bleeding unless I move my arm too fast and then it re-gashes itself. How would I go about it? Been considering trying my hand at stitches.

Question number 2: if I go to the hospital (most likely off the cards), do they need to put you in the looney bin for a bit or can I go home after? And do they need to tell my parents? I'm 16 and in England

Thanks.

Sounds like you've cut to or through the subcutaneous tissue and yes you need stitches. Don't fucking do it yourself. There's a roughly 100% chance it will get infected which can lead to tissue necrosis, amputation, sepsis, and death. Go to the ER.

Pretty sure that's going to need stitches. You should see a doctor. I don't know the laws in England, but I'm pretty sure they can't admit you into psychiatric care unless they think you might kill yourself or hurt somebody else. Generally though, if you're going to the hospital for care that suggests you aren't planning to hurt yourself. Plus, they would need your parents to sign off on it since you're a minor.

anyone who cuts themselves needs therapy, there is no way around that. Mentally healthy people don't harm themselves.

A cut does not need to be deep to cause issues, many people have random nerves that run close to the skin and such, hit one of these and you are screwed even with just a minor cut.

2 upvotes on reddit

Go to an emergency room. They have seen it before and won't believe any bullshit story you concoct about working on your wood carving skills and the knife slipped. If you nicked a tendon you can be crippled for life.

Go to A&E. They won't send you to the 'loony bin' as you put it, or tell anyone anything you don't want them to as long as they aren't concerned that you aren't a further risk to yourself.

They will likely signpost you to further help and support, which it sounds like you need.

For heaven's sake get it seen to medically. These kinds of cuts get infected and like another poster said it can lead to sepsis, necrosis, all sorts of nasties. And even if not it, without proper stitches it may not heal particularly well otherwise.

How to treat a deep cut

Key Considerations for Treating a Deep Cut:

  1. Stop the Bleeding:

    • Apply direct pressure to the cut with a clean cloth or bandage.
    • Elevate the area above the heart if possible.
    • If bleeding does not stop after 10 minutes of continuous pressure, seek medical attention.
  2. Clean the Wound:

    • Rinse the cut gently under clean, running water to remove dirt and debris.
    • Avoid using hydrogen peroxide or alcohol directly on the wound, as these can irritate the tissue.
  3. Apply an Antibiotic Ointment:

    • After cleaning, apply a thin layer of antibiotic ointment (like Neosporin) to help prevent infection.
  4. Cover the Cut:

    • Use a sterile bandage or dressing to cover the cut. Ensure it is secure but not too tight.
    • Change the dressing daily or if it becomes wet or dirty.
  5. Watch for Signs of Infection:

    • Monitor the cut for increased redness, swelling, warmth, or pus. If any of these occur, seek medical attention.
  6. Consider Stitches:

    • If the cut is deep, gaping, or located on the face or joints, it may require stitches. It's best to consult a healthcare professional for evaluation.

Recommendation: For deep cuts, if you are unsure about the severity or if it requires stitches, it's always best to err on the side of caution and seek medical attention. Proper care is crucial to prevent complications and ensure optimal healing.
