What Redditors are Saying

When to See a Doctor for a Cut

TL;DR

  • Seek medical attention if the cut is deep, won't stop bleeding, shows signs of infection, or exceeds your first aid abilities.

Depth and Severity of the Cut

The depth and severity of a cut are primary indicators for seeking medical attention. If the cut is deep enough to expose yellow fat tissue or does not stop bleeding, it’s advisable to see a doctor [4:1][5:1]. For cuts that are wide or deep, stitches may be necessary, especially if they are beyond basic first aid capabilities [1:2].

Signs of Infection

Infections are a significant concern with cuts. Signs such as redness, warmth, discharge, or increased pain around the wound indicate an infection, which requires prompt medical attention [1:1][2:2]. Ignoring these signs can lead to more severe complications like cellulitis or sepsis [3:4].

Time Since Injury

The timing of when you seek help can affect treatment options. For instance, stitches are typically only effective within a short window after the injury occurs, usually within 24 hours [1:1]. If it's been several days since the injury and issues persist, seeing a doctor is recommended [3:1].

Personal First Aid Ability

Your confidence and ability in handling first aid should guide your decision. If a wound exceeds what you feel comfortable managing, it's better to consult a healthcare professional [5:1]. Even if you lack proper supplies like bandages, it might be worth visiting a doctor to ensure the wound is properly dressed and cared for [5:2].

Mental Health Considerations

For individuals who self-harm, seeking medical attention is crucial not only for physical care but also for mental health support. While there may be concerns about being placed under observation, the risks associated with untreated infections are far greater [2:1][2:2]. Mental health screenings and referrals can provide additional support during recovery [2:2].

ORIGINAL POST

I don't think I do need to see a doctor, but I wanted to check on here to be sure. Cut is about two days old and 6 cm to 2mm.

Yes I’d go see a doctor . That looks pretty deep and wide . Stitches are needed or at least some sort of bandaging to keep it closed

This looks like an old cut so you won’t get stitches even if you go to the doctor. Just watch for signs of infection - discharge, redness, warmth, etc and keep the wound clean

Potentially yes, they will ask you about it and probably give you a mental health screening but unless you are an active danger to yourself like planning suicide, they will probably just treat you and offer mental health referrals. This changes a bit if you’re a minor, are you under 18?

Also, the risks of an infection worsening are much worse than being in a psych ward for a week, like losing your limbs or dying painfully from sepsis. Get those treated ASAP

Yeah I’m 16, I guess you have a good point i probably should go

Yeah to be honest with you, you might get placed on a 72 hour hold which is pretty much up to your parents’ and the doctors discretion. It’s not too awful, it may be helpful. I understand your fear though. But please don’t let that fear keep you from getting medical attention! I’ve nearly died from infections and sepsis and it is much worse than anything else I’ve experienced.

It happened last Thursday and I’ve been having a difficult time walking! I thought it would be silly to go to the doctor for skinned knees, but something’s got to give

If it’s been several days and you’re still having issues it would probably be a good idea to see a doctor.

Especially if you haven’t been taking care of the wound (antiseptic, dressing, etc)

I fell off a bike in highschool and skinned my elbow. I thought i cleaned it out good but after a few days it was only getting worse, went to the doctors and i had cellulitis. So just because its skinned and doesnt seem worth it to go, it could be something! Imo theres never a stupid reason to go to the doctors or urgent care!

Sooner rather than later is generally the way to go. Grit and dirt and gravel can be embedded and you want to get that cleaned out and cleared out

2 upvotes on reddit
C-D-W · 4 months ago

That's true, but to go to a doctor for that is insane unless we're talking fell off a motorcycle level of road rash.

I'm assuming your in the US but if I'm wrong my apologies. Here we have walk in centres as well or pharmacy staff can offer advice too. If you have the stuff to clean and check it at home then that's an option

Are we talking fell off a motorcycle at 60mph wearing your daisy dukes' level of bad, or tripped on the sidewalk?

Tripped on the sidewalk while running

Here's the reality - if you go to the doctor, unless you can articulate an issue more specific than 'it hurts to walk', or there is some obvious malformality - there isn't much they can fix. Prescribe you some pain meds maybe, and charge you a lot for the experience.

What specifically hurts when you walk? Is it joint pain? Skin pulling on the scabs? Is it like, ouch hurt or like, can't make it more than a few steps before you have to rest.

Details are important.

It doesn’t look like it’s too terrible to be visiting one, as long as you keep disinfecting it and keep it away from moisture. Or if you really are concerned you can visit one and decide if it’s worth it.

So I was in a high crazy sad mood and sh and it went deep not too deep I’ve had deeper but also shallower but I never knew when you need to seek attention so at what point does a cut have to look like to get medical attention? Or should get medical attention?

I'd say anything that exceeds your first aid ability. Unless you have confident experience treating wounds, anything that doesn't stop bleeding or is more than like ------- this wide, bc it will take a long time to heal leaving it at risk of infection much longer.

Trick-Barnacle-554 · OP · 2 months ago

I mean right now I don’t even have a bandage as apparently I used them all already so i used a Cotten pad with tape. But it’s not terribly wide but it’s definitely a cut I just don’t want to go and they laugh at me or judge me for coming with a tiny ass cut that isn’t worth doing anything too. I’d say it would probably take a month to heal if I just leave it go

I mean it took me a while but , people that talk about others are envious, they have nothing better to do then to speak on others and people like that, have issues within themselves there lives are boring ,so then they talk about people they think are beneath them , when in reality this perosn means nothing to you, this person doesn't pay your bills , this person doesn't help you with your home ,or your car, you room , this person doesn't shop with you. Or clean ...this person opens there mouth to feel useful

THEY MEAN NOTHING

If they talk bout you ,let them

It doesn't stop you from living your life ,but you know you made that gossip persons day by giving them something to talk about in there miserable life.

You are special never forget that 😝

When is a cut serious enough to see a doctor?

Posted by eclectic-gemini · in r/medical · 5 years ago

I was chopping chicken with a cleaver and accidentally cut off a small chunk of the corner of my finger. This happened about three hours ago but the bleeding still hasn’t stopped. I cleaned it, put gauze on it, and wrapped it tightly to keep pressure on it. I don’t have health insurance so I’m not trying to go unless it’s major. Blood poured out continuously and got everywhere, and it’s still bleeding (slower now though) as well as throbbing pretty badly. If it’s still bleeding when I clean it tomorrow should I go to a clinic?

Yeah, I’d say if it’s still bleeding uncontrollably tomorrow get it looked at. Just keep it elevated with a pillow and hold pressure.

UK GPs and wound care

Posted by Mother_Direction40 · in r/AdultSelfHarm · 1 month ago

Has anyone ever contacted their GP to ask for wound care assistance with any success? I’m aware I should have gotten stitches, but it was over a week ago now so we are where we are. I’m already undergoing DBT at the CMHT, so I don’t want or need mental health advise, I just need support with the right dressings etc for wound care - I’m anticipating a 2 month healing time! Thank you in advance

Update: I did an e-consult with the gp, who called and said they couldn’t see me and I’d have to go to urgent care to get it checked as it’s over a week old? I’ll try and go tomorrow morning for opening. I find large waiting rooms quite triggering so I was trying to avoid it, but I think I’ll give it a go.

Edit to update again: I went to urgent care this morning. They were super nice and helped me with advice and cleaned it for me etc. They said the practice nurse should have seen me and that’s it odd that they didn’t but I’m trying not to let that annoy me. Thank you everyone for all your support it’s really helped ❤️

If you're an adult, and have capacity (which you probably do if you're asking the question), they can't refer you to any mental health teams. They can put the pressure on quite a lot sometimes, but they can't force you.

I had the same thing where I had a wound that was large and ended up having complications because it should have got stitches, had an urgent GP appointment, and had a practice nurse steri strip/fix dressings/etc. and she ended up seeing me regularly to manage the wounds (and obviously more were coming up...), which was good especially as I had a nasty infection scare too.

I will say she was amazing, I think I was lucky but she was kinder than any mental health professional I've encountered and really wanted to help, although she maybe didn't always know how. Gave her a Christmas card. It's definitely something that can happen although like with everything NHS there is an element of postcode lottery.

Remember a SH wound (in terms of medical attention) is just a wound

I know you’ve resolved your situation OP and i hope you’re getting good support and that the wound heals up okay for you, but also omg i have such bad experiences going to my GP for help with wound care. they just make it worse every time! like i only ever even go as a last resort, when i’m not getting treatment anywhere else and need help with wounds, but they put terrible dressings on that only make whatever wounds worse, they don’t treat me like a person present in the room, and they just try to ambush me with overreactions that i didn’t ever need at the times. treatment at various other places in my experience is almost always great though, aside from the odd thing. there’s a few specialist hospitals i am/was a frequent patient at and even my local hospitals are never as bad as my GP is. but my GP is great for anything not-DSH or not-MH related, so i’m not completely shitting on them lol just read this post and went on a ramble sorry! best of luck OP :)

I’m not sure if it’s been mentioned, but be wary of who you share that you’re sh’’ing with as when I did dbt it was a condition of the course that I didn’t sh. I hope you managed to get seen and are okay x

1 upvotes on reddit
Mother_Direction40 · OP · 1 month ago

Thank you :)

My DBT course doesn’t have any requirements like this - just that I can’t use phone coaching for 24 hours after engaging in target behaviours. And that you then have to do a behaviour chain for it. There is no way they would have put me on the course if I couldn’t SH at all, because at the beginning of the year (when I was referred) it was several times a week.

It seems really sucky that some courses have this requirement - all it’s really going to do is encourage people to lie. You’re not doing DBT because you’re super healthy with great coping mechanisms!

I hope you’re doing alright

If you have a Minor Injuries Unit near you, I've always found them to be quite good with stitches and subsequent wound care if needed. They usually offer Crisis involvement but are also happy to just send a note through to CMHT to document that I attended.

General rule of thumb is:

  • Heavier bleeding that doesn't slow after 15 minutes of constant hard pressure
  • Exposing the subcutaneous tissue (fat, looks like pale yellow/orange/yellow bubbles)
  • Gaping more than 0.5 cm (you can get away with taping wounds around that width if they don't fit the other points)
  • You don't know how to take care of it or don't have the materials needed to care for it yourself
3 upvotes on reddit
Trick-Barnacle-554 · OP · 2 months ago

Okay so I don’t need stitches then because I don’t think it’s wider than 0.5cms and I don’t see any bubbles I’d say if it went a tiny bit deeper then yellow bubbles would be popping out but it’s not quite there. Also the time frame has passed sense I did it around 10pm I think last night and it’s now 7am so I don’t think I can go seek help anyway. But no I normally just let them go and then pick the scab and let it scab again I’ve never cared for them tbh mainly because idk what to do and idk when you need to seek help because I never just worried about it ya know but thank you for some info

2 upvotes on reddit
BulkyComfortable3040 · 2 months ago

The biggest one is if it doesn’t stop bleeding or if it is squirting out in pulses. My gf told me that if it’s gaping then you need stitches but I think you can get away with steri strips if it isn’t too big.

Do you feel comfortable sharing the size/location of the cut? It’s totally okay if not because there are some creeps here. Also don’t send a picture of it to really anyone here

4 upvotes on reddit
Trick-Barnacle-554 · OP · 2 months ago

That’s why I posted because I don’t want to just send people unsolicited sh pics ya know that can be very triggering to many people so I thought I’d ask on here. But it’s on the top of my arm and it stings like a bitch and it’s been bleeding for about 15+ mins and it’s not very wide or deep I’d say maybe —— this wide and ———————— about this long if that makes any sense

3 upvotes on reddit
BulkyComfortable3040 · 2 months ago

I think that makes sense. It sounds pretty bad to me but that’s just my experience. Now, I’ve never gotten stitches but I’m pretty sure I should’ve and mine were about the same width but shorter. Make sure to clean it as well by the way, even just some water. I personally would recommend being seen if you’re comfortable with it

I (19f) have a doctors appointment today and I have to get undressed from the waist up and I have cuts on my arms. Do you think that they will say anything or have to tell someone that I’m a danger to my self or whatever. Im already at work and I leave work to go straight to my appointment so I can’t grab anything from home to try to cover it. Please help explain to me how it works. I hope that she just ignores it.

if you tell them you’ll agree to therapy or they weren’t from the past 90 days you should be fine. or, i think you can get away with just promising to them you won’t do it again. from my experience, they just say “what’s this” and if ur good at talking them in circles or convincing them you’re better you’re fine. to be safe though hide ur wrists when possibke

Generally I’ve found your doctor (if they’ve never seen them/don’t have that info in your chart history) will get a look of concern and try to broach the subject hoping you will address it so they can get you a referral to their network of mental health specialists

Generally, there isn’t a lot a GP can really do in this situation as it’s kind of out of their scope, you have full autonomy on the healthcare you’d like to engage with and they can only “open the door” if that makes sense

When to see a doctor for a cut

Key Considerations for When to See a Doctor for a Cut:

  1. Depth of the Cut: If the cut is deep enough to expose underlying tissues (fat, muscle, or bone), medical attention is necessary.

  2. Length of the Cut: Cuts longer than 1/2 inch may require stitches to promote proper healing and reduce scarring.

  3. Bleeding: If the cut is bleeding profusely and does not stop after applying pressure for 10 minutes, seek medical help.

  4. Signs of Infection: Look for increased redness, swelling, warmth, or pus around the cut, or if you develop a fever.

  5. Location of the Cut: Cuts on the face, hands, or joints may require professional care for cosmetic reasons or to ensure proper function.

  6. Foreign Objects: If there are any foreign objects embedded in the cut (like glass or dirt), it's important to see a doctor for safe removal.

  7. Tetanus Risk: If the cut is caused by a dirty or rusty object and your tetanus vaccination is not up to date (usually every 10 years), consult a doctor.

Recommendation: If you're unsure about the severity of the cut, it's always better to err on the side of caution and consult a healthcare professional. They can provide the appropriate treatment and guidance for your specific situation.
