What Redditors are Saying

How to Spot Fake Products on Social Media

TL;DR

  • Use reverse image search tools like Google Lens or TinEye.
  • Check for consistency in product images and reviews.
  • Look up the domain information of the seller's website.
  • Compare prices and availability on platforms like AliExpress.

Reverse Image Search

One effective method to identify fake products is using reverse image search tools such as Google Lens or TinEye. Scammers often steal images from legitimate sites to make their listings appear real. If you find the same photo used across multiple unrelated sites, it could be a red flag indicating a potential scam [4]. This technique can help you avoid purchasing counterfeit goods by verifying the authenticity of product images.

Consistency in Product Images and Reviews

When evaluating a social media brand or seller, look for consistency in product images and customer reviews. Legitimate sellers typically use consistent backgrounds in their posts and provide detailed proof of transactions, such as visible customer details or business cards [2:1]. Be wary of pages that have different backgrounds for each post or use copied images from the internet, which may indicate they are selling replica products [2].

Domain Information and Reviews

Another way to verify the legitimacy of an online seller is by looking up their domain information. You can use domain lookup sites to find out where the website is hosted, who owns it, and other relevant details [4:2]. Additionally, searching for reviews about the domain can provide insights into whether the seller is reputable or potentially fraudulent.

Comparing Prices on Platforms like AliExpress

Social media ads often feature unique-looking items at inflated prices. By screenshotting these items and searching for them on platforms like AliExpress, you can find similar products at significantly lower prices [5]. Many items advertised on social media are drop-shipped from platforms like AliExpress, so this comparison can help you identify if you're being overcharged [5:1].

Additional Tips

Be cautious of brand ambassador scams on Instagram, which frequently target young people [1:1]. Also, consider reaching out to the seller through provided contact methods like WhatsApp or email to verify their legitimacy [2:2]. Engaging with communities or individuals who specialize in authenticating products can also be beneficial [3:1].

Way to identify fake pages

Posted by sunnykingxd · in r/BhartiyaReplicaParty · 3 months ago

I’ve noticed something on Instagram—many pages that sell replica products often post reviews in their stories. If you look closely at those images, you’ll often spot American-style doors, windows, or rugs—things that are uncommon in most Indian homes. That’s because they usually just copy and paste images from the internet, and unfortunately, a lot of people fall for it.

Each and every post will have different background.

someone who runs a legit page will have same background in all of the posts and will upload proofs with visible details of the customer/Insta account Card/Phone number/Business card etc.

Check highlights and posts by the date they posted.

See likes and comments irrespective to their followers and proofs.

Posted by hoopingmomma · in r/Moldavite · 6 months ago

It is really disheartening to know so many scammers are out there fooling people, or unknowingly selling fakes having been duped themselves, when there are reputable sources if you do a little digging and research :(

I just want to know if anyone agrees or some feedback? I educate about how to spot fakes on my tiktok and YouTube pages so I will incorporate what people need to hear!

That's why I wish they would ask (me) BEFORE buying.. If people shop with me .. great! If they don't shop with me, I will still help authenticate! 😊

I hate that I can't help people in M.E. and M.T. with this, but I do what I can here and in other FB groups that don't have a couple of ... people.

I feel the same way and always encourage people to message me on any of my socials other than TikTok, because there’s no photo or video messaging there, but I will gladly help you find the perfect real authentic piece of Moldavite, even if not with me! I often share my friends links when they carry something I don’t, like body jewelry or something!

Exactly!

Miss Abby is the go to for body jewelry! I debated getting her items for the shop, but for now.. I send them her way 😊

I don't do tiktok, had no idea that messaging didn't allow pics or vids.. strange! 🤔

Luckily fakes are, for the most part easy to spot. For me I think the bigger scam with moldavite is overpricing. Even when wholesale lots were 3 dollars a gram I see people reselling less then a gram for over 100. Miss those days before the moldavite trend blew up on tiktok and prices quadrupled haha.

LPT: Make your online purchases safer by reverse searching product images.

Before buying from an online seller you’re unsure about, use tools like Google Lens or TinEye to reverse image search the product photos. Scammers often steal images from legitimate sites to make their listings look real. If the same photo appears on multiple unrelated sites, it could be a red flag. This small step can save you from falling victim to fraud.

Or just look up their domain via domain lookup sites, see where it’s hosted, dig deeper and see location of domain registry, who owns and boom you have a lot of useful information to move on and do more research to see if you’ll be scammed. From here can even look for reviews on the domain and take it from there.

Thought it was common knowledge, but my friend didn’t know that so I’m sharing it here.

Whenever I find some unique looking item on insta of FB ad from some sketchy website, I screenshot it and look it up on Ali. Prices are usually 3-5x lower and wider selection

So true!!! There are so many inspiring ideas and items on social media ads that redirect you to an online store. Most of the time it's just a drop shipping store and with a quick search you can find the EXACT SAME item in Ali.

(Same goes with most of my local stores in my country)

How much does social proof really matter? Have you ever decided to follow or buy just because a page looked popular?

Posted by Longjumping-Mega · in r/DigitalMarketing · 1 month ago

Gotta admit, if I land on a page with thousands of followers and tons of engagement, it definitely makes me take them more seriously even if I know some of those numbers might be boosted. I’ve definitely followed and even bought from brands just because their page seemed "legit" at first glance.

Curious if anyone else does the same or do you look past the numbers?

Only if the social capital can somewhat be verified, i.e. they are indeed popular. So many vibe-coded landing pages these days just whack on these social proof elements which make them look... dodgy.

Is there a reddit where i can find the real things from fake social media ads

Those pesky dropshipping companies have a habit of posting stolen photos of beautiful things of high quality and then fulfilling orders via cheap knockoffs. Is there a reddit where i can post a photo from the ad and people tell me where i can get the good stuff?

I managed to track down the company who made a pair of shoes i really liked a few years ago, turns out it was some artisinal cobbler in spain whose photos got stolen. I just wanted to see if someone was familiar with the artist before i started doing actual leg work.

A lot of the recent "stained glass lamp" type knockoffs are actually just AI generated pictures, so in a way there is no "original" of those; they aren't impossible to make in a similar style, but you can't just find the shop that made them.

Depends on the kind of item. Electronics and general knick knacks are found on aliexpress and similar sites

3 upvotes on reddit
rsteele1981 · 1 year ago

Correct. The original for most of the items will be more expensive if you an find it. I'd recommend saving the image then using the google image search to find the original product.

The Ultimate DX set and RBV8 are from fake sellers account there’s many of them on shopee and sold with low prices. The pictures themselves is from a known aliexpress seller. There’s one review where the guy just receives a water bottle alone in a box LOL. No idea about the gold Big Bang Pegasis. The Jade Jupiter and Duo Uranus on 4th and 5th slide are midfake.

How to spot fake products on social media

Key Considerations for Spotting Fake Products on Social Media:

  1. Check the Seller's Profile:

    • Look for verified accounts or established brands.
    • Be cautious of new accounts with few followers or posts.
  2. Read Reviews and Comments:

    • Look for genuine customer reviews and feedback.
    • Be wary of overly positive comments that seem generic or repetitive.
  3. Examine Product Images:

    • Compare product images with those on official brand websites.
    • Watch for low-quality images or stock photos that don’t match the product description.
  4. Research the Product:

    • Search for the product online to see if it’s being sold at a significantly lower price than usual.
    • Check for any news or alerts about counterfeit products related to that brand.
  5. Look for Red Flags in Descriptions:

    • Be cautious of poor grammar, spelling mistakes, or overly promotional language.
    • Legitimate brands usually maintain a professional tone.
  6. Verify Payment Methods:

    • Use secure payment methods that offer buyer protection.
    • Avoid sellers that only accept unconventional payment methods (like wire transfers or cryptocurrency).
  7. Check Return Policies:

    • Legitimate sellers usually have clear return and refund policies.
    • Be wary of sellers that don’t offer returns or have vague policies.

Recommendation: Always do thorough research before making a purchase. If something seems too good to be true, it probably is. Use trusted platforms and consider reaching out to the brand directly if you have doubts about a product's authenticity.
