TL;DR Buying from Instagram shops can be risky due to scams and counterfeit products. It's advisable to use secure payment methods like PayPal, perform reverse image searches, and check reviews before purchasing.
Risks of Buying from Instagram Shops
Many users have reported scams or issues with orders when buying from Instagram shops. Common complaints include long shipping times and receiving items that don't match the advertised quality [1:4]
[1:10]. Some shops may simply be dropshipping items from platforms like AliExpress, leading to inflated prices and delayed deliveries
[1:9]
[1:11].
Payment Security
To mitigate risks, using secure payment methods is recommended. PayPal offers buyer protection, which can be useful if you encounter issues with your order [1:1]. Additionally, using a credit card can provide an extra layer of security through chargebacks
[1:1].
Research Before Purchasing
Performing a reverse image search can help identify whether the product is being resold at a higher price on Instagram [1:2]
[1:11]. Checking reviews on platforms like Etsy or eBay can also provide insights into the reliability of the seller
[1:2]
[4:1]. Many Instagram sellers are reselling items found cheaper elsewhere, so it's worth comparing prices across different platforms
[3:5].
Community Advice
Some community members advise against buying anything from Instagram due to the prevalence of scams and counterfeit goods [2:1]
[4:1]. Others suggest using established e-commerce platforms with formal buyer protections instead
[4:1].
Recommendations for Jewelry Purchases
For those interested in buying jewelry from Instagram, connecting with reliable sellers who have positive reviews can be beneficial [5:2]. It's important to confirm receipt of payment and expected shipping dates with the seller
[5:2]. If issues arise, reaching out to the seller for updates is recommended
[5:2].
There's always a bunch of jewelry ads on my Instagram. Some of them are really beautiful and I've thought about purchasing but then I read the comments and people are saying, "Where's my order?!"
You’d be shocked at how many of these stores and boutiques sell the same stuff — and at different price points to boot. I’d definitely follow suit of doing a reverse image search. I’ve also had luck searching on Etsy with a description of the IG jewelry since it’s a bunch of resellers on there too but they have so many store reviews.
I bought a super trendy ring a few years ago, and the variance in the market surprised me. I bought three different rings in the same style, and the price point really did correlate with quality. One ($200) ring was heavier than the others ($100). The cheaper rings were gold plated, and the gold rubbed off after a few weeks of wear.
After shopping for demi fine jewelry, I'm happy to pay more from a trusted seller to guarantee consistent quality. Do you have any Etsy shops you recommend?
Nice! I was definitely thinking about jewelry in the 20-100 dollar range, haha. It’s been on my mind but I haven’t bought much yet! I have been watching a lot of various brand reviews on YouTube though, I recommend looking brands up there actually.
Jenny Odell has an amazing piece called “There’s No Such Thing As A Free Watch” about Instagram jewelry brands—it’s so interesting!
I just read the piece! I had no idea that J. Crew acquired Madewell. It's astonishing how many fake websites scammers make using shopify.
Thanks for the read! Seems like it's less of a scam and more of crafty marketing. You'd probably see the same prices/products on Wish, but Wish isn't trying to attract that anesthetic insta hipster crowd lol.
They linked another interesting article: https://www.buzzfeed.com/dannosowitz/how-madewell-bought-and-sold-my-familys-history probably common knowledge, but J Crew fictionalized Madewell as some honest, quality, staple American brand with deep roots. When in reality they just bought the brand and logo just for that "circa 1937", and made up some romanticized marketing ploy.
Selling brands and logos happens everywhere, it's so disheartening when you find out the company you trusted for their standards and quality exists in name only.
The other day, I was in the market to buy a microSD card. I saw that Lexar cards were surprisingly cheap, and I had remembered that brand from over a decade ago when u was into DSLRs--they made good, quality stuff that pros used. Upon reading the Amazon reviews, a lot of the recent ones complained about abysmal quality control. And then I found the root of the issue: they sold the brand a few years ago.
>On June 26, 2017, Micron (the then-owner of the brand) announced it was to discontinue the Lexar retail removable media storage business and put part or all of the business up for sale. On August 31, 2017, Lexar was acquired by Longsys, a Shenzhen, China-based flash memory company.
Polaroid was also sold, I keep seeing their brand plastered all over cheap junk.
It might be a scam, or they might be asking "where's my order" because they're waiting more than 4 days for delivery.
I'm guessing it's usually the second reason.
You can take screenshot and do image search on Aliexpress. Usually they are just resellers and it’s way cheaper to order direct. Also safer
I second that!! Aliexpress shipping takes pretty long, but if you’re willing to wait the products are much cheaper than the ones people resell on instagram
Most of the time they're dropshipping so they literally just charge you 10x more to put an aliexpress order in to your address. That's why you see so many "where's my order" complaints after they say it will take 2 weeks but aliexpress will take a month or more anyways.
Third this - also DHGate.
If you do buy from an Insta store, use PayPal and a credit card (so you have double avenues to pursue a chargeback). I have found that many times these Instagram stores are selling something I can find cheaper on eBay or Amazon. They're just repackaging stuff from Alibaba.
Instagram isn't a store, AFAIK. My recommendation honestly is not to use any social media ads or any websites that are not explicitly set up as ecommerce platforms with formal buyer and seller protections. Trying to buy stuff on Reddit or Instagram or Snapchat or wherever is basically spraying money out of an open window and hoping that someone throws something good back at you. Maybe in theory it could happen that way but more likely you're going to get fucked every single time.
Instagram actually does have shopping integrated into it. If you have Instagram there are 5 navigation buttons on the bottom, one of which is shopping.
Why exactly are people shopping on Instagram? As far as I can tell it's only scammers, counterfeiters and dropshippers.
(Mushrooms aren't plants, they're fungi.)
But he has a bijillion and a half followers. That must mean I can trust him, right?
I want to order things from the TikTok shop, but I’ve seen or heard people get scammed and get credit card or debit card information stolen from them if I use like PayPal, will I get scammed or is the whole shop Just a scam? Cause I’ve read multiple things saying don’t buy it do it’s fine so I’m confused. I want honest opinions no holding back, please
I think tiktok shop is safe…. Just be careful of who you request samples from.
Just curious because I have just started requesting samples. What made you say be careful of who you request samples from?
I've bought 3 items from TikTok shop. I received all of it. I opened a return for 2 items. One they gave me a full refund and I got to keep the item. Second one they charged me for shipping and I was able to send it back
It’s safe all my orders have arrived
Yes it’s safe but always check Amazon for same product as in my experience it’s always cheaper
i’ve bought multiple things and have been fine, i would read reviews and check how many sales they have but i think tiktok is very protective over this sort of thing
Literally anyone can make a website to buy goods, and create an ad on instagram.
Just because Instagram has a high quality reputation and production, doesnt mean everything advertised to you is legit.
Same with facebook. Vast majority of the ads are scams. Warn elderly relatives too.
Amazon too. I found a bag my wife wanted for literally half the price and instead of 6 weeks it was prime shipping.

TLDR: Instagram has shady sellers. Just use E-bay instead.
Hi jewelry lovers! 😊
Alright, so I’m big on buying from reliable and trustworthy IG sellers when it comes to jewelry. Most of my jewelry are second hand from pawn shops and IG sellers. An account caught my eye and I made sure her account is legit. I bought some earrings from her and haven’t heard from her since the weekend.
What do I do? I’ve been wanting to reach out to her, but I don’t want to be pushy. Should I wait until Friday and message her asking for an update?
I guess this is my first and last time buying from her, which sucks bc she has amazing pieces I want to add to my collection. :/
Hello! I am an ig seller and 30 year plus collector and dealer.
Happy to help with any recommendations or ‘stay away froms’!!
You should absolutely touch bases if you have purchased something already.
I like to ship same day or next day, I know this isn’t possible for some people but they should at least message you to confirm receipt of payment and when it will be shipped.
Do you have any recommendations for people that buy or collect gold charms? I have a piece from Ochre Objects that I’m looking to give a new home. Thank you!
Thank you!! 😊 I’ll send you a message!
Yes! That’s the case with a lot of jewelers on IG. They usually ship same day or the next.
I see a lot of posts here bringing into notice some scams. I am curious to know why did you choose to buy from unnamed instagram shops instead of trusted platforms like Amazon ? I believe if instagram shops had a review system, shopping experience could have been a lot better.
Instagram shops do have a review system.
This is true and it takes forever😂. I'm still waiting lol I don't know how all these scammers got approved!
I shopped because my cousin’s cousin from the other side runs it and their work was good. They delivered well and became my permanent go to. Now I recommend them to almost everyone I who asks me.
Édit - i think your answer is word of mouth
Uniqueness
We are building exactly this. You can follow us on Instagram for updates! Link in my bio
Idk man, you must be like way smarter than everyone else or something. Congrats
Oh I wasn't mocking anyone. I wanted to start my own instagram shop and was worried that why would anyone trust my shop to buy when there are platforms like Amazon.
Just wanted to understand from the buyers here as to what made them choose an instagram shop to buy from. Is it because the product was available only with this shop, or it was at a highly discounted price, or anything else. I wanted to learn from it what I can do to get people to buy from my shop.
I want to buy a necklace via small business through instagram dms, how do i know if its legit?

Is the price too good to be true?
not really? its £10 for a stainless steel necklace with some beads
Ask them to video call and show
Any of you ever bought an IG account? I know it's against the ToS but it might be worth getting a head start with buying a good 10k-100k followers account.
I know Fashionnova bought accounts but given their ad spend, probably IG wouldn't do anything to them IF it ever gets to that.
I suppose the risk is if Facebook/Instagram are ever on the hunt for whoever bought accounts but so far I haven't heard of anyone getting punished for that
Opinions please?
Nope don't do it you'll get scammed (Also grow the following yourself, any followers are most likely bots)
I reckon with some research (igaudit, socialblade/igblade, a bit of analysis into who comments) you can tell between a fake-follower account and a proper one.
What I'm asking is: given that it's a proper one, is it worth the "risk"?
No, never just grow a relevant following yourself :)
Depends on what you are trying to achieve. If you get an account with over 10k for the purpose of flipping it to a business insta account, and using the swipe up function for your posts/ads then sure.
On the other hand, if you looking at buying accounts.. to leverage as a starter... Might not be a great idea..
What I would do (as I currently do) is create your own or buy some aged accounts, and follow/unfollow and engage with direct message using a simple message with the purpose of having them follow your main, to introduce who you are, and to also offer a freebie (they can get said freebie on the main account)
That will definitely help drive REAL accounts to your main, filter out the crap, while keeping your engagement ratio on your main high.
If you want to know more feel free to reach out.

You end up with lots of bots and people who don't care about your content..avoid
I do not recommend this at all, besides the fact that you will most likely be scammed, most pages that are sold are inactive or almost impossible to grow, especially if you’re not familiar with the niche you’re planning to buy into.
Besides that, re-selling is a pain in the ass
As quickly using Google Search, there are many revealed cheap services you can buy to use Instagram followers. You can just buy followers for 6$ for 500 followers and 10$ for 1000 followers but the question is, is it safe? I don’t think it is safe it is because it does violates the Terms and Conditions through buying followers. You can get easily banned and you are avoided by purchasing high quality followers from a reputable vendor. The problem also in buying followers in Instagram is that your followers are real people but engagement is still unlike. It is a risky investment because you can’t guarantee that these accounts will follow you back.
I'm thinking of buying an account (not sure which yet though) but I'm worried that if i buy one instagram may ban the account i buy etc.
Following on from this I'm from the UK so if I bought an account from USA for example, would they see this as a red flag and ban the account for strange activity?
Any help on this would be great thanks!
social tradia
Is this a safe website to use? Can I see how much engagement the page gets?
No idea, try buying a page for 50-100 bucks, work on it for a month and sell it for higher, see if its legit or not. If youre planning on buying a big account its probably worth putting that money into ads for your own organically grown account, shout outs from 100K+ accounts cost around 20 bucks.
Hi,
This is a reminder to not promote your instagram page here,
Thanks.

so as the title says how reliable are they? i’m in need of a new plug but a lot of the sellers seem really fake, are any of them actually legit? and if so is there any way to tell if they’re legit
I only get my stuff on IG or telegram pages. I’ve prob met up with about 10+ pages and everyone has been sound with good quality stuff:)
I was kind of sus of the telegram seller groups, since they were really easy to find. Are the legit ones private?
Same, 2 years here and no issues using telegram/IG
Did they ask you to pay before meeting up?
Some people are legit. Anyone that hasn't been around already with an established reputation I wouldn't trust though. Basically if you don't know them already you are pretty much out of luck
If they follow more people than they have following them, their story's are usually screenshots of other people stories aswell.. Annoying af
I was once desperate staying in Dublin for 2 weeks and I didn’t know anyone I could get stuff off so I went on fb and had heard about this page that someone I knew had gotten stuff off before. This was during the height of covid so it was very sketch as it was just being out and about lol but it was grand. I was skeptical because I was buying an oz but it went so smooth. The stuff was lovely and the 2 fellas I met were lovely. Obviously I was scared being a woman and meeting two strange guys but I met them on a public street and it was a quick painless transaction. I got straight in a taxi back to where I was staying and enjoyed my smoke. Don’t even know what page it was now cause it’s been so long but it was my only interaction with that kinda thing and it was super positive!
In my experience they’re all grand, as long as you arrange to meet them in a publicish place and you don’t send them money beforehand.
Also don’t believe a word from all the sellers currently in your Reddit dms because of this post
Is it safe to buy from Instagram shops?
Key Considerations for Buying from Instagram Shops:
Seller Reputation: Check the seller's profile for reviews, follower count, and engagement. Look for verified accounts or those with a good track record.
Product Information: Ensure the product descriptions are detailed and clear. High-quality images and accurate sizing information are also important.
Return Policy: Review the shop's return and refund policy. Reliable sellers should have clear guidelines on returns and exchanges.
Payment Methods: Use secure payment methods (like credit cards or PayPal) that offer buyer protection. Avoid direct bank transfers or payment apps that don't provide recourse.
Customer Reviews: Look for feedback from previous buyers. Check comments and tagged photos to see real customer experiences.
Privacy and Security: Be cautious about sharing personal information. Ensure the shop has a secure checkout process (look for HTTPS in the URL).
Recommendation: If you're unsure about a shop, consider purchasing from well-known brands or shops with established reputations. Additionally, if the deal seems too good to be true, it might be worth investigating further before making a purchase. Always trust your instincts and prioritize safety when shopping online.
