How to Unlock Spells in Hogwarts Legacy

TL;DR

  • Complete quests and events to unlock spells.
  • Some spells may be missed if not obtained during specific events or quests.
  • Check spell lists and ensure you scroll through available options.

Unlocking Spells Through Quests and Events

In "Hogwarts Legacy," many spells are unlocked by progressing through the main storyline, completing side quests, or participating in special events. For instance, some spells are tied to dueling club events or seasonal quests, which means they might not always be available [1:1][3:1]. If you miss a spell during an event, it can sometimes take a while before you get another chance to acquire it [1:3].

Spell List and Customization

The game includes a variety of spells that players can learn over time. Some of the spells mentioned include Lumos, Alohomora, Reparo, Expulso, Stupefy, Depulso, Levioso, and Expelliarmus, among others [2:1]. There is speculation about being able to customize spells with attribute points, allowing for different effects or enhancements [2:4]. This feature could potentially allow players to upgrade basic spells into more powerful versions, such as turning Protego into Protego Maxima [2:5].

Time-Limited Side Quests (TLSQs)

Some spells and potions are only available through Time-Limited Side Quests (TLSQs), which means they might not be accessible at all times [3:3]. Players have expressed concerns about missing out on certain spells if they don't complete these quests when available [3:2]. However, developers occasionally bring back these quests, giving players another opportunity to learn the spells [3:1].

Using Spells in Dueling

Once spells are unlocked, they should automatically appear in your spell list for dueling. If you're unable to see new spells during duels, make sure to scroll down the list, as they might be hidden below the initial options [4:1][4:2]. Some players have noted difficulty in finding their spells due to the interface not clearly indicating additional options [4:3].

Dealing with Bugs and Missing Conjurations

If you're missing conjurations or spells due to a glitch, it may require creating a new save file or checking for updates from the developers [5:1][5:2]. Always ensure that your game is up-to-date to avoid missing out on content due to bugs.

There is a lot of spells in year one that I’ve missed so how do I learn them?

AngelWithAWormstache · 5 years ago

You might get those spells in event so don’t worry you didn’t miss them. They just pop up in dueling events or something like that

But if there’s a spell from a duelling event and you don’t get it in time then you won’t get a chance to get that spell for a very long time

Rosiee04 · 5 years ago

These spells are from previous duelling club events. There has only been one time when we have been given a second chance to get one of the spells.

There might be a couple which are from seasonal/unavailable side quests, though I am not sure about that.

How many spells will we be able to unlock?

Posted by LuigiPawter-8 · in r/HarryPotterGame · 3 years ago

Hello everyone! Just wanted to see some opinions on the matter of spells in Hogwarts Legacy. I know with RPG and open-world games there tends to be a lot of freedom in terms of abilities, and it is heavily rumored, if not practically confirmed, that our character will have a spell tree to grow throughout the story.

With this in mind, I wanted to know what people were thinking! How many spells do you guys think we will be able to unlock?

I'd be surprised to see more than 15 unique spells.

I have a feeling there will be attribute points or some sort where you can 'customise' existing spells to lean more one way than another/ add an addition effect.

E.g. - Flippendo as a knockback curse, add a point and it causes the opponent to momentarily stun an opponent instead of knocking them back/ or the spell knocks an opponent back with no stun effect/ or the spell has an increased chance to knock an opponent back and momentarily stun them (if taking a middle route and wanting both effects).

You’d be surprised to see MORE than 15 crappy spells?? Lol ok.

If there’s less than 15 then that’s shit. Utter shit. They need to include ALL spells or don’t bother making the game anymore.

[deleted] · 3 years ago

This is why people need to check their expectations. You want every single spell in existence? Good, don’t play the game. One less entitled fanboy to whinge that the devs didn’t make a tailor made game specifically for you.

Ok so you’ve got:

  1. Lumos/Nox
  2. Alohamora
  3. Protego
  4. Reducto
  5. Flippendo
  6. Wingardium Leviosa
  7. Expelliarmus
  8. Ascendio
  9. Expecto Patronum
  10. Homenum Revelio
  11. Incendio
  12. Stupefy
  13. Augamenti
  14. Diffindo And
  15. Episkey (for a bit of healing)

Including the ability to modify spells with attribute points (again not confirmed just my theory) what more do you need? (Plus potions) perhaps your list might be different but 15 is a lot. Especially if we can modify the spell effects/ upgrade the spell effects.

Do you want multiple spells that do the same thing? In that case, here have Aberto AND Alohamora. Or Bombardo AND Reducto.

Do you want all of the spells so that you literally use Apparecium one time?

That’s a fair point! I would wanna see as many as they can without it feeling like ridiculous. To be honest I don’t know what that number would be for me

Another thing I would love to see would be the “maxima” of some spells. So like we could have “protego” as a beginner spell and “protego maxima” as a stronger form of it we learn later on, I think that would be pretty cool!

Ciniqs · 3 years ago

That’s a pretty good idea! Having spells being upgraded in tiers could be cool; going from lumos to lumos solem and protego /protego totalum/protego maxima and bombarda/bombarda maxima etc.

Not sure how it would work with spells that don’t have a greater tier but it’s a good idea nonetheless!

I really hope they work a system where you can combo different spells. Also I hope on next gen they increase particle effects.

Yeah haha, use incarcerous on an enemy, then depulso them and watch them roll around!

CyronSplicer · 3 years ago

The increase on particle effects is practically a definite, as Avalanche have created the game using Unreal Engine 5. I watched some YouTube videos on UE5 and I'm gobsmacked at what it can do.

Edit: I'm completely wrong they're using UE4

Now that I think about it, didn’t we get a sense of that from the trailer? Just from seeing that part where the bad guy was shooting continuous spells at us and when the girl student used a form of finisher against a bad guy where she levitated him and slammed him to the ground? Man I really hope this game delivers on the combat

The leaked trailer HUD shows the following spells at various points:

  • Lumos
  • Alohomora
  • Reparo
  • Expulso
  • Stupefy
  • Depulso
  • Levioso
  • Expelliarmus

Protego is also heavily implied via gameplay, though I don't believe the spell name ever explicitly shows up on the HUD.

I'm pretty sure one or two other spells have been mentioned in interviews, but I can't find anything concrete from a quick search. I wouldn't be surprised if we get some kind of "sempra" spell for basic combat. Also potentially Nox, to extinguish lights. Maybe Accio for puzzle solving. Hominem Revelio and/or Specialis Revelio also feel like possible candidates -- a "detect life" ability, and a classic eagle eye / witcher vision / "detect interactable" ability. My guess is around 12-16 total spells, but maybe you can spec to improve your capabilities with some/all of them.

So I'm getting to the last chapter of year 2, done all the TLSQs the game threw at me and started the Quidditch season... And yet I didn't get to learn all the spells and potions (I. Is this normal? I did extra study sessions just in case, but no more lessons were unlocked. Is this normal? Will I get a chance to learn them later / be in trouble for not having them in the future? Any input is welcome!

Meteolojinx Recanto, the Charm you are missing, is learned in A Very Weasley Christmas which should trigger in December. Fire-breathing potion is learned from Help Hagrid! which has not been available in a long time. They recently returned a TLSQ about Tonks that had also been removed from the game, so hopefully we will get the Hagrid one again at some point.

If Google Translate is correct, you said that you played this one the other day. There are MANY Side Quests and Time Limited Side Quests (TLSQs) about helping Hagrid with things. From the main Spreadsheet, 5 of the Y2 quests are not currently available in the game. One of those is one just called Help Hagrid! which used to appear after Y2 CH6.5 and had 10 parts to it. You learned the Fire-breathing potion near the end of the side quest.

Quite a few side quests were removed from the game for "adjustments" and most have not been returned. The game used to have a lot more side quests that were NOT time limited, but they don't seem to do that anymore.

"Usable in Dueling" - How to use these spells?

Posted by Pukunui · in r/HPHogwartsMystery · 7 years ago

So, I'm mid-Year 4, and have learned quite a few spells that are "Usable in Dueling," but it seems I have the same 3 spell options for aggressive/sneaky/defensive as I've had since my first duel. How do you actually get to use these other spells that are "usable for dueling ?"

Also, on the topic of dueling, with the recent Dueling Club event, I noticed that my opponents often had both more powerful spells (there was one that was frequently used against me that did 20 damage, despite my opponent having lower stats) and about twice as many hit points as I did. Is there anything I might have been doing wrong (e.g. spell choices), or is the deck just this stacked against you?

Thanks!

(Edit: It wasn't obvious that the list was scrollable. Thanks for the clarification. Now to find a duel to go test this out)

They should be on the list automatically if you unlocked them/learned said lesson. You just need to scroll down the list for the newer ones.

Odds are stacked against us. Opponent has twice hp we have, regardless of stats. So, even though they do the same damage, 20 damage spell (depulso) takes half our health, while for opponent it's only 1/4.

Are they „exploration“ conjurations that you are missing? If so, there might be a glitch. If not, go buy the ones you are missing from the shop.

most year 1 spells are from dueling events that you missed so you can MAYBE get some of them when they have a blast from the past dueling event where you get a shot at one of the ones you missed but it happens like once a year so far in november

Most of these year 1 spells are from past dueling events that rarely come back. Many of us wrote to support about this and a couple blast from the past dueling events brought back some old spells so there is hope. But we need to keep reminding JC that we want more chances to get more of the spells we missed.

As for spells and potions like Episkey, the forgetfulness potion, and the fire-breathing potion, these are learned during side quests that have been temporarily removed from the game by JC for more than a year.

Can you please join us by writing to JC about these? The more people that contact support about the dueling event spells and pulled side quests the better :)

I think the Reluctant Reverser charm is learned in the Hagrid’s Birthday TLSQ which should be in your memory book.

The flame freezing charm was from a diary event. They might bring it back somehow.

For now, just in the memory book. It's a good option, the problem is that JC. updates the book once a year.

So the 6 spells in there are all the spells since release except for the past year? I thought there were over 20+ spells from dueling events? Is there a list somewhere that has the dueling event spells on it?

This lists all the duelling spells. Column G notes if they are unlocked via story or came from duelling events.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1pC26M1yVe7rLxUMzKMEAevr0SSFmf4j3G3PyUBu_-9w/view

They only added the event retries to the Memory Book fairly recently (August?). It’s had spells added once since then (October).

ETA: I think a few recent spells might be missing on that spreadsheet. I’ll update it later.

Missing Conjuration

I have been replaying Hogwarts Legacy and I was trying to get all of the conjuration. I seem to be missing one. I know it says I am missing two but one of them I dont have because I haven't completed the poppy storyline. I have 35/35 at Hogwarts. I have 5/5 at Hogsmeade. I have 115/116 in the entire world (missing one from the poppy storyline because I have not dont that yet but that is not the conjuratuon I am looking for. I have also checked all 12 of the vivarium chests 3 times. And I have checked the 15 butterfly chests 4 times including the one from the butterfly quest in the entrance of the forbidden forest. I have added pictures of all the things I think might be helpful. If anyone knows what I might be missing or how to fix this please let me know.

It's most likely the Moonstone Garden Collection Chest bug.

"The Moonstone Garden collection chest bug is triggered occasionally by looting the hard to reach chest in the Room of Hidden Things during the Room of Requirement quest. Go to the Moonstone Garden near Irondale and cast Revelio next to both of the collection chests inside to see if either highlights despite already being open. If one of them does highlight, then you have a bugged save that will never be able to 100% your collections, leaving you stuck at 139/140 Conjurations.

To avoid this in future playthroughs, when you do the Room of Requirement quest, avoid looting the hard to reach chest during the initial walkthrough. If you've already looted it, check the Feldcroft Region of the map to see if it shows any collection chests have been collected that you can't account for, keeping in mind it's only supposed to count chests from Hamlets, Camps, and Dungeons."
