How to Upgrade Armor in Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree

TL;DR In "Elden Ring," you cannot upgrade armor in the traditional sense as seen in earlier games like Dark Souls 1 and 2. However, you can alter certain pieces for cosmetic changes and slight stat adjustments using a special item.

Armor Alteration

While direct upgrading of armor is not possible, you can alter some armor pieces. This alteration is done at Sites of Grace after obtaining specific items like sewing needles. The alterations mainly involve cosmetic changes such as removing cloaks or adjusting hoods, which may slightly affect stats and weight [1:1][5:1]. However, these changes are minimal and do not significantly enhance defensive capabilities [3:1].

Game Design Philosophy

The absence of armor upgrading aligns with FromSoftware's design philosophy since Dark Souls 3, where armor upgrades were removed to emphasize player skill and strategy over equipment stats [2:3][5:4]. This change allows players to focus more on aesthetics—often referred to as "Elden Bling"—and less on min-maxing armor stats [2:2].

Impact on Gameplay

Armor in "Elden Ring" plays a lesser role in character defense compared to weapons and shields. Players often find that the difference between medium and heavy armor is marginal in terms of damage absorption [4:2]. Instead, players are encouraged to invest in other attributes like Vigor to increase survivability [4:1].

Community Insights

Many players have expressed disappointment about the inability to upgrade armor, citing nostalgia for the tank builds possible in earlier Souls games [3:4]. However, others appreciate the freedom to choose armor based on appearance rather than stats, making fashion a significant aspect of the game [5:4].

In summary, while you can't upgrade armor in "Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree," you can make minor alterations for aesthetic purposes. Focus on finding armor that suits your style and complements your build, as the game's mechanics prioritize skill and strategic play over raw defensive stats.

ORIGINAL POST

I’m specifically not looking to be directed to altering its appearance and instead, trying to improve the stats of my armor.

Also specifically not weapons. Armor only.

I haven’t been able to figure out if this is possible and have been looking for the answer extensively.

Thanks in advance

Yea altering the armour with the needle does change the stats and weight

Apparently, you cannot upgrade armor at this time, directly and purposefully.

When you beat the twin boss in the cave by the sea and get the needle and thread you will be able to alter your torso armor only, which includes a reroll of abilities. It is not guaranteed to be a better roll. I don't know if you can do it more than once. It only works for torso armor.

It works for more than torso armour. I've altered helms as well.

For the life of me I can’t find it. When I go to the blacksmith or anvil the only option available is “Strengthen armament”. I’ve looked online and they all tell me that’s where it should be. Am I missing an important item or something?

No armor upgrades - just find a better set if anything. Armor isn't the biggest gamechanger though don't think it will be a massive improvement for defence necessarily. I always base my armor 20% on stats and 80% on looks, Elden Bling baby

You don't upgrade armor. You can alter the appearance of some pieces from a Grace after you find the item to do so, but that's it.

They cut that starting in DS3. It was never that important anyway, just a sink for extra materials when your weapons were done.

Aww a real shame. I was hoping it would come back for ER but alas, no.

It was so nice back in DS1 you could turn yourself into a veritable tank ala the dark iron set. It took a stupid amount of twinkling titanite but man, once it was fully upgraded you'd shrug off hits like nothing.

Guess if I want to be tankier in ER I gotta just find a better set of armor.

Between buff spells/consumables, heavy armor with high poise, and the new Guard Counter mechanic, tank builds are more viable than ever, so honesty idk what the other guy's talking about.

If you want a guide, here's a good video (and channel) that helped me a lot: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iLCIFe9h6zc

When you could upgrade armor you could screw pvp balance by staying low Soul level but maxing armor. Back then pvp was within 10 levels of each other so if you were a low level player with high level armor you had huge advantage.

It seems PushSquare lied to us. They have an article that clearly states that you can upgrade weapons and armor at Church of Ellah and Roundtable Hold. I was confused because no you can't upgrade armor, not at either of these locations, but what do I know? I'm a noob. Seems like lazy (game) journalism if that isn't the case. Good to know, anyway.

You can’t upgrade the armour but you can slightly alter the stats. Go to the cave with the double boss that leads to the dragon church, when you beat them you get an item that allows you to alter some clothes at a grace (it’s mainly things like removing cloaks or putting hoods down etc)

You cant upgrade armor. You can alter it, but that only changes it slightly. You need more health, not heavier armor. Armor is really o ky for looks, as in souls games, higher armor really only saves you a couple points of health in the long run. Not really worth bogging yourself down with extra weight.

1 upvotes on reddit
Blancer · OP · 3 years ago

Really? Seems like a huge missed opportunity, who wouldnt want to make their armor protect against higher damage. How are we supposed to become more tanking without upgrading armor or theres no point to heavy armor what so ever?

-3 upvotes on reddit
Z
Zhouston63 · 3 years ago

Okay so it's obvious you're new to these games and that's fine. Heavy armor protects more than light and medium armor and has higher poise (poise is related to how easily you stagger). However heavy armor is...well...heavier so you have to manage your weight more so you don't have a slower roll. In these games dodging is more effective than protecting yourself anyways. As the comment said above, vitality is your friend, you want more health and you may want to learn to dodge.

Flint_Vorselon · 2 years ago

You can’t.

Arnour provides a % based reduction in damage taken. So there’s no need to keep it up to date with game progression. 15% physical negation means incoming physical damage is multiplied by x0.85, this means it’s efficientivness never changes, it’s always going to be equally effective.

Unlike a weapon. If a +0 sword does 110 damage that’s going to be fine vs early game bosses with 1500 hp, but pure trash vs lategame boss with 20,000 hp, so upgrades are needed to keep the damage dealt relevent.

Dark Souls 1 & 2 used different defense system for armour. It wasn’t % based, so upgrading it to keep it relevent was actually needed. But Bloodborne onwards arnour works by % mitigation so upgrades arnt needed.

Holy moly! Strengthening armament is such a game changer.

Posted by LargeAppearance3560 · in r/Eldenring · 7 months ago

Guy in his mid-30s here getting back into gaming. I've been playing Elden Ring for two months and only recently started using smithing stones to strengthen my armament. I'm also an idiot, because I thought increasing Strength would increase the damage done by my weapons. I'm guessing increasing Strength only increases the available weapons you can wield. Whoops.

So I leveled up one of my axes to 9+ Somber Smithing Stones and wow! I can slice through enemies like butter haha.

My vigor is 44, Strength at 32, Endurance at 31. Haven't really increased other stats to be honest.

Damage output is a combination of the stats the weapon scales with, and the upgrade level.

Or rather, the upgrade level increases how much attack rating you get from the stats the weapon scales with.

You can also change which stats the weapon scales with by changing the affinity using the Ash of War system. Keep in mind that weapons that upgrade with somber smithing stones can not change their affinity.

"I thought increasing Strength would increase the damage done by my weapons. I'm guessing increasing Strength only increases the available weapons you can wield. Whoops."

It can increase the damage your weapons deal, but by how much depends on how well the weapon scales off of your Strength stat. Check the Attribute Scaling section to seee this info.

From strongest to weakest scanning, the letters go: S>A>B>C>D>E>-. Better the letter, better the scaling.

Professional_Rush163 · 7 months ago

Basically you won’t need to rely on increases on damage through stats until later (once you’ve gotten vigor to 40 for mid game, 50 or 60 for endgame). Though of you’re at lvl 9 somber you might be at end already.

Get the stat requirements for your preferred weapons (if you 2h, your effective Strength will be 1.5x your base strength), then focus on vitality and endurance. Your smithing upgrades will carry the damage until you are built up enough to start building damage through attributes. Just pay attention to scaling on weapons, your dex rating will always increase from keen, but dex also increases most lightning armaments. Heavy will increase strength affinity, as well as weapon damage with Fire. Cold is increased by Int, and status affects by Arcane.

Why is a tailor upgrading metal armors? Wtf. Really. What were you thinking? Fix it. Put it back how it was. Cloth armors sure. Just no.

3 upvotes on reddit
Eighty_Eye · 4 months ago

Nothing to 'fix' it has always been this way since the earliest access build. Armor = Tailor and weapons = Smith. I agree it logically is weird, but from a game standpoint can understand it, it makes it easier when considering where do i craft upgrades and such, imagine of you had to do the cloth, leatherwork at one vendor then the chainmail or plates at the smith then bring the metalwork to the tailor/Master Armorer for fitting and final assembly. It would be more realistic sure, but needlessly tedious and gameplay wise, splitting the armor upgrades and purchasing between two vendors would also cause confusion. Yes. They could have just put it all on the Smith, but clearly they wanted two deticated vendors when designing the game.

How to upgrade armor in Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree

Upgrading Armor in Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree

  1. Find Upgrade Materials:

    • Collect specific upgrade materials such as Smithing Stones and Somber Smithing Stones. These can be found throughout the game world, in caves, and from defeated enemies.
  2. Visit a Blacksmith:

    • Head to a blacksmith, such as Smithing Master Hewg in the Roundtable Hold. You can also find other blacksmiths in various locations.
  3. Select Armor Upgrade:

    • At the blacksmith, choose the option to upgrade armor. You will see your current armor set and the materials required for each upgrade level.
  4. Upgrade Levels:

    • Armor upgrades typically have several levels (e.g., +1, +2, +3, etc.). Each level requires more materials and may increase the armor's defense and resistances.
  5. Consider Armor Sets:

    • Some armor sets may have unique bonuses or effects when worn together. Upgrading a complete set can enhance these benefits.
  6. Check Stats:

    • After upgrading, check your armor's stats to see improvements in physical and elemental resistances, which can significantly impact your survivability in tougher encounters.

Recommendation: Focus on upgrading armor that complements your playstyle. For example, if you prefer a tanky build, prioritize heavy armor sets. If you favor mobility, consider upgrading lighter armor for better agility while still providing decent protection.
