How to Use the Prawn Suit in Subnautica

TL;DR

  • The Prawn Suit is best used for deep-sea exploration and resource gathering.
  • Essential upgrades include the Grapple Arm and Jump Jet Booster for improved mobility.

Understanding the Role of the Prawn Suit

The Prawn Suit in Subnautica is designed for navigating the sea floor rather than swimming, making it ideal for exploring deeper regions and gathering resources [2:1]. It has a high crush depth and is durable, which makes it suitable for environments that other vehicles might not handle as well [2:1].

Essential Upgrades

To enhance the Prawn Suit's mobility, acquiring the Grapple Arm and Jump Jet Booster upgrades is crucial. These upgrades significantly improve maneuverability, allowing you to traverse difficult terrains more easily [2:3][2:4][3:3]. Without these upgrades, the Prawn Suit can feel clunky and slow [3:3].

Using the Prawn Suit Before Acquiring the Cyclops

While the Cyclops can transport the Prawn Suit to distant locations, it's possible to use the Prawn Suit effectively before obtaining the Cyclops. Some players suggest focusing on areas where the Prawn Suit's strengths, such as resource gathering and durability, are most beneficial [3:4]. Planning expeditions carefully and using the Seamoth for initial explorations can help bridge the gap until you have all necessary upgrades [3:4].

Building and Customizing the Prawn Suit

To build the Prawn Suit, you'll need to scan fragments to obtain the blueprint, typically found in the Aurora's Prawn Bay [4:2][4:3]. Once built, customization and upgrades can be done through the Vehicle Upgrade Console, which is constructed in the Moonpool using the Habitat Builder [5:1][5:3].

General Tips for Using the Prawn Suit

  • Keep one arm free for picking up smaller items like diamonds and lithium [1:4].
  • Be mindful of power usage, especially in deep caves or when surrounded by aggressive life forms [1:7].
  • Experiment with the Prawn Suit to discover its full potential, as it can become a powerful tool once mastered [3:1].

Nothing like the first time you roll up to an aggressive life form in a prawn. Not so awesome when it runs out of batteries deep in caves surrounded by said aggressive life forms.

What did you name it? My seamoth is OceanGate (probably too soon), and my prawn is TBD but I'm thinking Jerry P.

very cool but make sure to leave one arm normal so you are still able to pick up smaller items (like diamonds, lithium, etc.)

[No spoilers] When am I supposed to use the Prawn Suit?!

Posted by hippopotacampus · in r/subnautica · 3 years ago

New to the game and I LOVE IT SO MUCH.

I have been using my seamoth a lot and I really like it, with all the upgrades and stuff, it’s amazing.

However, I just recently got the prawn suit and I was really excited about it, but after having tried it out I’m super confused.

How tf am I supposed to explore or even get around when I can’t swim in it??

I just keep sinking to the bottom and trying to get back up is a hassle. Are there any major upgrades that makes it better or something? I really want to get the drill-arm to gather resources, bc that’s the only way to get stuff from the big chunks right?

Or is there another tool, separate from the prawnsuit??

I’d love to hear some tips and tricks + hear about when and why you use the prawn suit instead of the seamoth. :)

I’m so happy that I found this game, might be my favourite game of all time honestly!

Hey there. Prawn is supposed to me used as a tool to explore deeper regions and gather resources. Its easiest to get the Cyclops and transport your suit with it and exit when you'll reach your destination.

Pretty much don’t use it until you have the grapple and jump boots. Once you do, the sea moth becomes pointless

Hey there! Welcome to Subnautica!

The lack of buoyancy is a feature of the prawn suit to navigate the sea floor. It's why it has such a high crush depth and is really difficult to destroy. Each of the vehicles you have are designed to navigate a specific kind of environment and learning how to use the right tool for the right job becomes very important to learn and deal with.

It's a pain to dock and get any real lift besides the jumpjet it's equipped with but if you plan your expeditions right, it might be the best vehicle in the game.

How to use the PRAWN suit before having the Cyclops?

Posted by MegaJello1234 · in r/subnautica · 6 years ago

Hello, Subnauts!

Like quite a few starter players, I built my first base in the Safe Shallows, where it borders both the Kelp Forest and the Grassy Plateaus. I feel like the natural way to progress with the vehicles is Seamoth - Prawn - Cyclops, which means there's a gap between having a Prawn and having a Cyclops.

As of now, the Prawn is just kinda sitting at my base in the Shallows. I don't find much use for it? On the one hand, it's quite far walking to deep-sea areas. It feels so clunky and slow, not to mention very inefficient and time-consuming to just take a stroll towards the Blood Kelp/Lost River. On the other hand, the Seamoth with 3 depth modules feels more suited for the time being, until I can build a Cyclops.

Please share your thoughts on this. How can I put the Prawn to good use? Or do I better wait until I have a Cyclops?

Thank you for your input!

The prawn is more or less useless mobility-wise until you get a grapple arm, then it's the best thing in the world.

I never bothered finding the cyclops parts on my 1.0 playthrough and just used the grapple prawn for the entire game.

I honestly didn't use the PRAWN much until I needed to go below 900m. That's around when you finally have access to all the things you need to fully upgrade it too, so. Keep seamothing on, if you want to.

^(PRAWN is fun once you get the hang of it, but it also runs into a bunch of bugs that the Seamoth doesn't.)

Hey bud, gonna just drop this here, it's the result of many many hours testing the prawn suit.... here goes!

Honestly, it bothers me that more people don't experiment with the prawn suit.

It's unbelievably good.

These videos are all of the original Subnautica game!

Unmodded, in real time & are over several rigs with varying performance.

 TLDR: do this instead

Edit: Holy crap, I've been testing exclusively in the prawn suit for 6 months now! Weird.

Holycrapballs yes, after testing for a few hundred hours i'm crazy excited. It's completely satisfying.

LIke everything else in the game, you have to scan the fragments. You will be able to get them all in one place. No hurry. It's more of an endgame vehicle. The Seamoth will be enough for a while.

There was a message at the beginning of your game that’s stored in your PDA that will explain fragments and why you need them. Should be under the log messages tab or the data bank tab. (Could be both.)

Data bank entry.

>Warning: blueprint database corrupted

>Damage to your PDA's hard drive has corrupted approximately 80% of stored survival blueprints. Blueprints may be reacquired by scanning a salvaged technology using the handheld scanner, or by downloading plans from a ship-board databox. In the circumstances these assets will most likely be found amongst wreckage from the Aurora.

It was one of the first messages you received at the very beginning of the game. It’s easy to miss the first time around in all of the chaos.

You also need blueprints for the prawn suit arms themselves.

If its around 50 I will get out, but even at 50 the prawn suit will only take 20 or so damage from a Reaper, so I feel fine cruising around at 85. Plus (aside from getting stuck in a wreck) I'm not too shabby at breaking ankle-fins of topside leviathans.

PSA about the Prawn suit

Posted by AgilePlant4 · in r/subnautica · 1 year ago

Do Not Leave your Prawn Suit behind when going through portals in Subnatica, there is a good chance (especially in facilities) that the floor will eat your prawn suit. It is also possible to loose it if you leave it out and go far away.
The likely culprit is zones unloading before the prawn suits, or loading in after the prawn suit.
Note, while it is possible to free the prawn suit while it is partially submerged, it is unpredictable and more times that others will send your prawn theough the floor entirely.

I just tale my prawn suit into the portal. I mean one would imagine that in an scenario of being in an ancient alien facility and taking their teleporter to who knows where that you would want to be inside of a giant mevh suit. What if it teleports you into outer space?

Posted by SoonlyXo · in r/subnautica · 4 years ago

I just got my first prawn suit and it feels very clunky. It is slow and it doesn’t really fit my style, but I think it’s necessary that I have it. But what is the best way to use the prawn suit? Should I pair it with the cyclops or should I use it on its own (on a side note, I find it hard to dock the prawn suit with literally anything). Which are the most essential arms or should I bring multiple? What role does it play in terms of exploration (I.e seamoth is a reconnaissance/mini vehicle while the cyclops (for me) is a mobile self sufficient base for extended missions)

Multiple prawn suits

Has anyone done a play through with 2 prawn suits? I’ve created a base with a moonpool in the jellyshroom caves and want to drop a prawn suit down there to mine for stuff. I know that I can ‘spiderman’ my way back out but it’s tedious and I’m thinking of just leaving the prawn in the moonpool for when I want to just go down there and find resources. I’d then create another to use everywhere else

How to use the prawn suit in subnautica

Using the Prawn Suit in Subnautica: Key Considerations and Tips

  1. Crafting the Prawn Suit:

    • You need a Vehicle Upgrade Console to craft the Prawn Suit.
    • Required materials: 2x Plasteel Ingots, 1x Enameled Glass, and 1x Advanced Wiring Kit.
  2. Entering the Prawn Suit:

    • Approach the Prawn Suit and interact with it to enter.
    • Use the control panel inside to manage upgrades and power.
  3. Basic Controls:

    • Movement: Use the W, A, S, D keys (or joystick) to move around.
    • Jump: Spacebar (or designated button) to jump; the Prawn Suit can jump high, useful for navigating terrain.
    • Crouch: Control (or designated button) to crouch, allowing you to fit into tighter spaces.
  4. Using the Grappling Arm:

    • Equip the Grappling Arm (if installed) to grab onto surfaces and pull yourself towards them.
    • This is useful for climbing and navigating vertical spaces.
  5. Using the Drill Arm:

    • Equip the Drill Arm to mine resources like Lithium, Titanium, and more.
    • Hold the left mouse button (or designated button) to drill into resource nodes.
  6. Power Management:

    • The Prawn Suit uses energy cells; ensure you have spare power cells to avoid running out of power.
    • You can recharge the suit using a Power Cell Charger.
  7. Upgrades:

    • Install upgrades like the Depth Module to increase the maximum depth you can explore.
    • Consider adding the Torpedo Arm for offensive capabilities against hostile creatures.
  8. Combat and Defense:
