How to Watch Harry Potter Movies in Order

TL;DR Watch the Harry Potter movies in the order of their release for the most coherent experience. Start with "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" and end with "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2." Fantastic Beasts films can be watched after the main series.

Chronological Viewing Order

The recommended viewing order for the Harry Potter series is based on the chronological release of the films, as they follow a coherent storyline that builds upon each previous installment. The correct order is:

  1. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone
  2. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
  3. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
  4. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
  5. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
  6. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
  7. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1
  8. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 [2:1], [3:2], [5:1]

Fantastic Beasts Films

The Fantastic Beasts films are prequels to the Harry Potter series, set many decades earlier. They provide background to some elements seen in the Harry Potter films but are not essential for understanding the main story. If you choose to watch them, do so after completing the main Harry Potter series:

  1. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them
  2. Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald [2:1], [2:5]

Books vs. Movies

Many fans recommend reading the books before watching the movies, as they offer more depth and detail than the films. Starting with the first book can provide a richer understanding of the wizarding world and characters [2:2], [2:6]. However, if you're primarily interested in the movies, following the chronological order will still provide an enjoyable experience.

Avoiding Confusion

Jumping into the series at any point other than the beginning can lead to confusion, as each film builds on the events of the previous ones [3:3]. Watching the movies in order allows you to see character development and plot progression naturally, making it easier to understand the overarching storyline.

If you can read the books, audio or paper/ereader, start with that, then move onto the movies. Watch Harry Potter years 1-6(Philosopher/Sorcerer, Chamber, Prisoner, Goblet, Order, Half-Blood) then 7 parts 1+2 in order. Then watch Fantastic Beasts: AWTFT, then FB:TCOG.

The books are superior to the movies for content and depth. The movies win for time.

I think 1-8th movie for Harry Potter. Then fantastic beasts. Fantastic beasts is a sort of prequel to the Harry Potter series, but I don’t think you can understand the wizarding world unless you’ve seen Harry Potter first.

Harry Potter and the...

Sorcerer’s Stone, Chamber of Secrets, Prisoner of Azkaban, Goblet of Fire, Order of the Phoenix, Half Blood Prince, Deathly Hallows pt 1, then 2.

The Fantastic Beasts films are prequels - Where To Find Them, followed by Crimes of Grindelwald.

No, watch the original movies first. The Fantastic Beast movies honestly don't stand up well on their own. But really I'd recommend starting with the books.

Just watch the original movies and then backtrack to the new ones.

While the events of the Fantastic Beasts movies have an effect on the later series they are many decades earlier

I would start by watching the philosopher's stone, then reading the first through third books at the very least before continuing on with the movies.

I suggest watching one movie first to give your mind a visual starting point. Rowling's writing is not overly descriptive when it comes to setting so already having an idea what the major locations look like will really help you to play out the scenes in your head while reading.

What order do I watch Harry Potter in?

Posted by simonjones2006 · in r/harrypotter · 3 years ago

Hi guys, I'm new to the fandom and I'm really excited to start watching the series cos I've heard it's really good. However I'm a little overwhelmed by the number of films in the series so I was wondering if there is a specific order I should be watching them in. I started watching Goblet of Fire and i'm honestly a little confused as to what's going on. I am a big Dream smp enjoyer which means I am used to massive jumbled timelines so I'm fine to persevere but some help would be appreciated. thanks!

Anyway watch them in this order:

Sorcerer’s stone

Chamber of secrets

Prisoner of Azkaban

Goblet of fire

Order of the phoenix

Half blood prince

Deathly hallows (part 1, then part 2 but that should be obvious.)

No, it's cool. You haven't spoiled much. On the other hand, you should watch them in chronological order ( date of release ). They're not like Star Wars or MCU, it's one coherent story one movie after the other. Side note : I kind of envy you. I wish I could cast Obliviate on myself and watch them all over again.

Is it important to watch harry potters movies in order from the first to last one?

Posted by callmegrizzl · in r/harrypotter · 2 years ago

During my younger days, I watched the first two Harry Potter movies, but memories of them have faded over time. Now, at 28, my interest in filmmaking has grown, and I've noticed my style aligns with the recent Harry Potter movies' cinematography – the cloudy, mysterious color grading and captivating landscapes.

However, before diving into the later films, I'm unsure if they're interconnected, requiring a chronological watch for the full story from the first movie to the last one? or each movie begins with a different story that doesn't connect with the previous one? Also, as an adult, I wonder if I'll still enjoy the first two movies, originally aimed at a younger audience or just skip them? if they're necessary needed to watch to get the story meaning then I don't mind watching them.

thank you

Yes you have to watch them in order, it's a continuous story. The first 2 movies might be designed for younger audiences but they're extremely important to the plot, just like all of the movies. You absolutely can't skip them

callmegrizzl · OP · 2 years ago

Okay thank you! I will have to start all over again from tonight haha.. btw how do you find the saga overall is it worth the watch? ( I'll watch it anyway haha) but I just want to know if the story got improved and exciting through the new movies or not ? for the cinematography I already saw some few shots from harry potter and the deathly hallows and it looks freaking amazing!

4 upvotes on reddit

MyTrashCanIsFull · 2 years ago

I'm just going to say that you asked "do you find the saga overall is worth the watch?" on a sub that is full of people who have likely watched the entire saga and/ or read all of the books many times. There is only 1 answer you'll get here.

Since you are looking at it from a cinematography angle I think that watching the entire saga will be really interesting. There were several different directors over the course and seeing how they handled the material and set the mood of each is really fascinating.

2 upvotes on reddit
[deleted] · 2 years ago

I think it's worth watching if you've read the books already. As far as the story goes, after the first two movies a LOT of content had to start getting cut because the books were becoming so long. There's also content that wasn't cut but just changed.

You should still watch them but be warned that there might be some things you're confused about because the movies don't do the best job at explaining everything. They were clearly made with the assumption that most people seeing them will have read the books.

7 upvotes on reddit
Fuzzy_Roll6419 · 2 years ago

Yeah this is isn’t like the Star Wars or Marvel franchises where there are debates on whether to watch chronologically or by release or some other weird order because these were released chronologically and build on one another. You would be missing a lot of important information if you were skipping around.

callmegrizzl · OP · 2 years ago

The movies barely make sense as they are, if you haven't read the books. If you skip parts of the story they'll make even less sense.

1 upvotes on reddit
callmegrizzl · OP · 2 years ago

So if I don't read the books it will be harder to get the meaning of the story?

1 upvotes on reddit
E
englishghosts · 2 years ago

Yeah. You can still get it, and many people who haven't read the books still find them enjoyable, but a lot of things are removed or changed due to timing, even whole characters, and some characters are very different from their book counterparts. If you're just watching for the cinematography I say go for it, but if you're really a fan of the story I'd recommend reading or listening to the books too.

They are very interconnected.. I personally can’t just watch a random HP movie.. I have to see 1-8.. it has to be in order 100%.. it’s the only franchise I’ve had to do this with.. they all hold up imo

Haha same that's why I asked before doing it 😂 btw does the story gets exciting after the two first movies? in terms of the writing etc do u think it has improved or not.. without a spoil haha. I just want to know from your perspective as I believe you're a big fan since you joined that subreddit! unlike me I'm just in my journey to watch the full saga, I got interest in the cinematography of the movie in the first hand then if the story is exciting it will be perfect!

Read all 7 books before watching any of the movies. The movies change or omit a lot of things especially from the last three books, and watching them before reading the later books will make some things unnecessarily confusing.

Let me revise... You can watch the first 3 movies right after each book. But I wouldn't watch the last 5 movies (starting with goblet of fire) until after finishing the series.

And if you're into video games play hogwarts legacy, it's an amazing game I just finished it not too long ago. But if you dont have any gaming consoles to run it you will need a decent PC.

And it's not exactly the same but once you finish this maybe check out The Dresden Files. It's about a wizard living in Chicago who is a private detective. He even advertises in the yellow pages. His name is also Harry.

We’re going to Universal and I wanted to finally appreciate some of the Harry Potter stuff as I’ve never seen the movies and always couldn’t have cared less about the HP parts of the parks.

The first two movies were a little slow, but my goodness, Goblet of Fire and Order of the Phoenix were awesome and got me hooked, and I just binged The Half Blood Prince and Deathly Hallows Pt 1 and 2. What a freaking ride. This has to be one of the most rewarding movie watching experiences I’ve ever had.

I just watched all the Star Wars movies for the first time for the same reason I watched the HP movies, as we’re going to Disney as well, and I think HP, to my surprise, was the better experience for me. Harry Potter’s “lows” were the start, which is understandable as they were sort of limited by the age of the kids and such. Star Wars lows were so much lower, and while Revenge of the Sith is one of my favorite movies of all time and idk if I can say that about any of the HP movies yet, the shear consistency of this series was outstanding. Every single movie got better.

This is kind of a random post, so sorry, and I don’t mean to stir any drama with Star Wars. Both are amazing franchises. I just mentioned it to show how amazing I found the HP movies much to my surprise.

Also, the revelations in DH Pt 2 blew my MIND. I expected some of it but WHAT??!! Absolutely amazing.

Does anyone have any recommendations for other media types I can consume of HP? I’m currently playing Hogwarts Legacy and might read the books in the future, though I’m not a big reader. Any recommendations are much appreciated.

If you can, listen to the audiobooks! Stephen Fry and Jim Dale have both narrated the series and I think both of them are brilliant in their own ways. Whoever you choose to listen to you’ll enjoy it! The movies are awesome, the books just fill in any of those missing gaps and little details the movies can’t fit in. You can appreciate both movies and books for what they are. I’ve watched the Fantastic Beasts series and for me personally they didn’t have the click that the HP series had but to each their own.

Never in my life did I think I would watch Harry Potter. As a kid idk what happened just never wanted to read or watch them. Grew up playing sports and watching sports. Never been a huge movie guy my whole life. I got on an airplane a month ago and to calm my nerves I put on a movie. Somehow I stumbled upon Harry Potter. When I tell you I am now completely obsessed, and already about to put back on the first one… all my friends and family are like you watched all of Harry Potter??? Never too old to fall in love with a movie series I suppose. Here’s how I ranked the movies… again I never read the books and went in with no knowledge at all. Happy to find this reddit btw!

  1. Goblet of Fire
  2. prisoner
  3. Deathly Hallows Part 2
  4. Order of the Phoenix
  5. Half Blood Prince
  6. Sorcerers Stone
  7. Deathly Hallows Part 1
  8. Chamber of Secrets (still wasn’t bad at all)

For me it's:

  1. Prisoner of Azkaban
  2. Order of the Phoenix
  3. Philosopher's Stone
  4. Deathly Hallows Part 2
  5. Chamber of Secrets
  6. Deathly Hallows Part 1
  7. Goblet of Fire
  8. Half Blood Prince

That's my order too! Except I think I like HBP better than Goblet of Fire because I personally think they did a disservice to the Dumbledore character more in the 4th movie than any other movie.

I just remember how he was always described as calm and collected. Like it was a staple of his character in the books and he was just an angry old man in the Goblet of Fire. I can think of a handful of times. It's also the reason why OotP isn't my favorite movie.

I love the movies, but man did they do Dumbledore dirty throughout the series.

But also can never decide if the 3rd or 5th movie is my true favorite

I'm a 31 year old who just watched them for the first time, and this is the correct ranking. I knew Prisoner was highly regarded because of Alfonso Cauron, but i wasn't prepared for how great Order of the Phoenix would be. I think it had the best villain, the best wizard fight, and Harry at his best.

Alot of people dont like them, but I'd personally recommend the Fantastic Beasts spinoff films as well. Lots of Easter Eggs and call backs. Plus you get more immersion into that wonderful world

Def read the main HP books first though.

I was wondering what to do next. I’m so sad that nothing happened after deathly hallows part 2. Understand you don’t want to ruin such a good series, but at the same time it seems like there was so much spinoff potential. Debating on watching fantastic beasts for sure! Also been watching some YouTube videos of people dissecting the movies of things I missed.

There is indeed so much potential! I've said for years they could do so many more stories (especially once you read the books you'll see several different avenues they could go). Just know if you do watch Fantastic Beasts they are prequels set in the 1920s and 30s, as the main series is set in the 90s.

I'd also recommend reading the script for the play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. It's disowned by a majority if the fandom, but I'd still recommend it just because while the story is kind of absurd, it's still entertainig. Plus you might be a fan who winds up liking it

I've been watching Fantastic Beasts after also watching Harry Potter for the first time. They're alright. Johnny Depp is always great, and Dan Fogler's character is funny.

I'd say the first Fantastic Beast is pretty good! I'm not a fan of the other two.

Chamber of Secrets is my second favorite movie, but mostly because it is nostalgic to me. I used to watch it every week and I would recite the movie word by word from the beginning to the end. At the time it was one of the two movies I was able to go back and watch.

I remember seeing Chamber of Secrets in theaters on opening day. My school rented out the entire theater for us. Definitely one of my formulative childhood memories.

You should make a different post when you are done reading the books, and rank them! I'm curious to see if it would be the same order as the one you did for the movies.
