TL;DR
To watch the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movies in chronological order, start with "Captain America: The First Avenger" and follow through by the timeline of events depicted in the films. Disney+ provides a list under the "MCU Complete Timeline" section for easy access [5:1].
Chronological Order Guide
The chronological order of the MCU movies is based on the timeline within the universe rather than their release dates. Here’s a basic guide:
Streaming Services and Resources
Disney+ offers a convenient way to view the MCU movies in chronological order. By navigating to the Marvel section, you can find the "MCU Complete Timeline" which lists the movies in the order of their internal timeline [5:1]
[5:3]. Additionally, there are numerous online resources and lists available that detail the chronological order, such as those found on Rotten Tomatoes
[5:2].
Considerations for Viewing
While watching in chronological order can provide a unique perspective on the storyline, many fans recommend watching the movies in their release order for the first viewing. This approach ensures that the post-credit scenes and references make sense and do not spoil future plot points [1:9]
[3:5]. After experiencing the MCU in release order, viewers often enjoy revisiting the series in chronological order to gain new insights
[1:10].
Additional Content
If you're interested in expanding beyond the movies, consider integrating the Marvel TV shows into your viewing experience. Shows like "WandaVision," "Falcon and the Winter Soldier," and others tie into the movies and can enhance understanding of certain plotlines [1:8].
That's good for the first viewing but I prefer to watch them in chronological order the second time around.
Same! Tbh I’d watch a supercut on Disney+ putting the movies + their pre/post credits scenes (and maybe the one-shots but probably no tv shows) in order. Something like:
•Multiple prologues/scenes from Thor movies, Black Panther’s prologue
•Captain America the First Avenger
•Ego with Meredith Quill, Original Ant-Man and Wasp’s midsole mission, Peter Quill’s abduction, Hank Pym leaving SHIELD, a couple scenes with Tony Stark’s parents from Civil War, flashback of Thanos meeting Gamora from IW, T’Chaka talking with his brother from Black Panther
•Captain Marvel
•Iron Man 3’s prologue
•Iron Man
•Incredible Hulk/Iron Man 2/Thor cut together, + CATFA’s ending scene waking up in the present
•Avengers
•Thor the Dark World
•Iron Man 3
•Captain America the Winter Soldier
•Guardians of the Galaxy
•Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
•Avengers Age of Ultron
•Ant-Man
•Captain America Civil War
•Black Widow
•Black Panther
•Spider-Man Homecoming
•Doctor Strange
•Thor Ragnarok
•Ant-Man and the Wasp
•Avengers Infinity War
•Avengers Endgame
•Spider-Man Far From Home
Y’know what ig this guy on Twitter already did it, just read that haha (spoiler warning though)
Tbh I’d be thrilled with a super cut on Disney+ that let you select which media you wanted to include. Default is just the movies, but you could select to add the one shots and shows too. Then you just hit play and bam, like a 50+ hour MCU movie you could just leave going as background noise
You should look for the ultra mega cut that someone put all of the movies in chronological order, but not like as one movie after the other, they made one long 50+ hour monstrosity that has each MOMENT in chronological order, so if a flash back to a phase 1 movie happens in one of the phase 3 movies, the phase 3 flashback is just cut out of the movie and put somewhere it belongs in the middle of another movie.
I hope that makes sense, I didn't explain it very well.
Chronological order means in the order of the time periods in which the movies are set. For example, that would make the first MCU movie Captain America the First Avenger, since it was set in the 1940's. And then Captain Marvel would be second, since it is set in the 1990's.
But to back up the original point, the release order is best for first watch .
That’s mostly the current order of when they came out yeah! There’s also Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness, Thor Love and Thunder, and Black Panther Wakanda Forever which all came out this year. Two out of the three are on Disney+, you’ll have to wait for WF in January to come to the streaming service I believe.
I’m not sure how you feel about watching some of the shows, but they are also decently important too as they tie into later films. If you end up liking a lot of the movies and want to continue watching MCU content, then I’d say watch the shows.
It’s mostly the same order, but you start with Captain America: The First Avenger and Captain Marvel. The Guardians movies go back to back, and Black Widow goes after Civil War. I think that’s it? I’m going off the top of my head here. There’s a few lists out there that have better detail.
I agree with this with the ONE exception that you should watch black widow after civil war. Other than that stick with release order.
Get a Disney plus subscription. They have it in release order as well as time line order. I am now watching reverse time line order
One thing to note is that after Endgame when the shows start coming out, some of them start to affect the movies. We haven’t seen it much yet, but it’s obviously going to, moving forward. I think right NOW the only one that matters in that regard is that you should watch the WandaVision series before you watch Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness. But it’s going to get more important not to wait for the shows as we go forward, like, it’s obvious that the Falcon and Winter Soldier show will be important to have watched before the Captain America: New World Order movie.
First go round, I'd watch them in release order for sure. If you watch them chronologically, you get the bookend scenes and post-credits scenes that won't make as much sense.
They’re meant to be watched in release order. Do that first and then get weird with it and watch them in chronological order. Fourth or fifth time around, go reverse alphabetical.
Hi. I'm not familiar with Marvel movies, so it's a shame that I purposely avoid and not watch new releases because I fear I won't be able to understand them fully.
Now I got extra time to watch one movie daily, so I wanna know – Is there's a proper way to watch them chronologically?
I tried Google but answers are varying and overwhelming.
Also, are there movies you think are irrelevant or I could/should skip?
Appreciate your inputs. Thank you!
This might be a bit late for you, but a couple years ago when I re-watched everything with my teenage daughter, I made a few adjustments to the then-popular thematic order, and I called it the "storyline order."
The intent was to help the stories and themes flow smoothly from one movie to the next, connecting plot points and character arcs that get separated and lost in pure release order or pure chronological order. I was surprised how well it worked, both for a first-time and repeat watcher.
There will always be debates about where to put some movies, especially Captain Marvel and Black Widow, but for the sake of the broader story arcs being told throughout the main movies, this "storyline order" worked surprisingly well.
I detailed my observations and reasoning here: https://www.reddit.com/r/marvelstudios/comments/10zuugc/the_storyline_viewing_order_maybe_the_best_option/

WARNING SPOILERS IN THE ARTICLE, but the order is:
Captain America: The First Avenger
Iron Man (2008)
Iron Man 2 (2010)
Thor (2010)
The Avengers (2012)
Captain Marvel (2019) (Should I Watch the Credits Scene? No. It’ll make no sense at this point in time. Watch it after Infinity War.)
Thor: The Dark World (2013)
Iron Man 3 (2013)
Captain America: The Winter Soldier
Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015)
Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)

Captain America: Civil War (2016)
Black Panther (2018)
Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017)
Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018) (Should I Watch the Credits Scene? No. It’ll either feel like a J.J. Abrams-style mystery or a confusing spoiler.)
Doctor Strange (2016) (Should I Watch the Credits Scene? No. It’s just a scene from Thor: Ragnarok, which you’re about to watch next.)
Thor: Ragnarok (2017)
Avengers: Infinity War (2018) (Should I Watch the Credits Scene? Yes. Then you can watch the Captain Marvel credits scene for the follow-up.)
Avengers: Endgame (2019)
Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019)
Release order. Otherwise post credit scenes will spoil future movies you haven’t seen. Aka Black widow post credit scene = big spoiler
What was the order of the avengers
I watched it based on the release dates as suggested by many.

I'd like to do a complete watching run of all Marvel Universe movies and I was wondering if there's a guide that could help me find the right chronological order. I am not a big MCU connoisseur at this time, but would love to understand more about the overall story(ies).
thanks! :)
For first time watch, release order is best.
After, you can use this one where you get the order of the shows too.
Also, because you said you're new, don't forget to watch the post credit scenes too. Every movie has either one or two (mid-credits and post-credits)
Just follow MCU release order, anything Marvel Studios is canon (and some other stuff too after Spiderman No Way Home)
Of just the MCU movies?
Disney+ lists them in chronological order.
I guess the DC movies as well; I just didn't know I could mention it on this sub' too!
Thanks for your response!
The DC films go in order of release... except the 2 Wonder Woman films... which are prequels to everything.
Don’t do chronological order. Because in chronological order, some movies were released years after some others, and there’ll be references, callbacks, or even references that you won’t understand.
Hell, some will even spoil future shit. And not like minor stuff, but MAJOR stuff. Just watch in release order.
Does anybody know the chronological version of watching?
Thanks.

Made this one myself for a huge marathon leading up to Avengers 4, I’m gonna keep it up to date with each release.
Shouldn't AMATW be in there either right before IW or during AoS S5?
I’m in the UK so I haven’t seen it yet.
After Antman and Wasp i think people should realize chronological order is wrong and stupid. Dont listen to people who tell you chronologixal. Either go by release or try this order:
Iron man, Incredible Hulk, ironman 2, thor, cap, avengers, dark world, guardians, ironman 3, wintersoldier, ultron, antman, civil war, spiderman, black panther, doctor strange, ragnarok, infinity war, antman and wasp
> After Antman and Wasp i think people should realize chronological order is wrong and stupid.
Alternate viewing orders can provide hitherto undiscovered insights.
Don't listen to people who tell you that there is only one way to enjoy the universe.
Oh yeah there's nothing better than having the giant crossover movie and the thing this entire franchise has been building up to spoiled by Antman and the Fucking Wasp.
Did you really just say "hitherto undiscovered"?
This is my own personal order. It's definitely not perfect, but that's intentional. If you did everything in true chronological order, you'd get super burned out on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., so I usually pop in a movie or another season where they don't belong, to mix things up.
Please do release date. It’s how most of us saw them
No, I prefer to do the chronological version of watching. :)
Release date is mostly chronological except for the first four movies can be watched in any order and the two guardians movies can be watched whenever
I've made some updates to my orderings this weekend; perhaps one of these graphics can help.
Watching Order (mostly chronological):
http://www.flaminio.com/images/mcu-watching-order.png
Note that everything released so far (and in the near future) happens chronologically before Avengers: Infinity War. I've left most future series unplaced for this reason -- no one knows when they will happen timelinewise yet (except the creators).
In putting this together it occurred to me that intermixing the Netflix series and Hulu/Freeform series into the mainline MCU is becoming more and more complicated, and less and less relevant, so I've put together an alternate graphic that keeps each of these branches in order with respect to their own chronology, but does not try to slot them into the mainline:
http://www.flaminio.com/images/mcu-alt-watching-order.png
Finally, for those chiming in with "Release date!" -- release date is good but breaks down somewhat when trying to include all the TV series. For example, Luke Cage S1's release date is two episodes into AoS S4. It doesn't really make sense to watch two episodes of one series and then break away to watch 13 episodes of an unrelated series. With this in mind I've put together a "mostly release date" graphic -- shows are kept together to maintain story continuity, but it's still mostly by release date:

Thanks for reading...
If I wanted to watch all the marvel movies in chronological order, what should the list be?
There is thousands of lists like that in google: https://editorial.rottentomatoes.com/guide/marvel-movies-in-order/
Go to the Marvel hub and scroll down to the “MCU Movie Timeline” row
If you go under the marvel tab it’s got a chronological order
I like the release order so you can start with the Infinity Saga and then the Multiverse Saga if you want
The first movie chronologically would be Captain America: The First Avenger.
If you click on the Marvel square on the Disney+ hoe screen and scroll down to ‘MCU Complete Timeline’, you'll see the chronological order.
This was the order I got from https://www.techradar.com/how-to/how-to-watch-the-marvel-movies-in-order
Captain America: The First Avenger (takes place during WWII) Captain Marvel (takes place in 1995) Iron Man (takes place in 2010) Iron Man 2 (takes place after Iron Man) The Incredible Hulk (time unspecified, pre-Avengers) Thor (time unspecified, pre-Avengers) The Avengers (takes place in 2012) Iron Man 3 (takes place six months after The Avengers) Thor: Dark World (post-Avengers, pre-Ultron) Captain America: Winter Soldier (post-Avengers, pre-Ultron) Guardians of the Galaxy (sometime in 2014) Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (after Guardians) Avengers: Age of Ultron (takes place in 2015) Ant-Man (takes place in 2015) Captain America: Civil War (post-Ultron, pre-Infinity War) Spider-Man: Homecoming (post-Civil War, pre-Infinity War) Doctor Strange (takes place in 2016) Black Panther (takes place in 2017) Thor: Ragnarok (post-Ultron, pre-Infinity War) Avengers: Infinity War (takes place in 2017) Ant-Man and The Wasp (ambiguous, but fits nicely between IW and Endgame) Avengers: Endgame (starts in 2017, finishes in 2022) Spider-Man: Far From Home (post-Endgame)
NOW I NEED SUGGESTIONS ON WHAT TO WATCH NEXT.
Seen all the TV shows? You could watch them...
I haven’t. Netflix? Disney +?
If you've not seen any TV shows, a good starting point would be Agent Carter. The series picks up about a year after Cap goes into the ice and follows the ongoing adventures of Peggy Carter in the SSR. It's only 18 episodes spread across two series, and can be a good test if you're into the "vibe" of the TV shows versus the movies.
If you get through Agent Carter and want MOAR, your next stop should be Agents of SHIELD. It starts off a bit slow and uneven, but stick with it and you'll be rewarded by the end of S1, and from there it's solid right through S6 (S7 coming in summer).
Want even MOAR? Next up I would recommend the Netflix series: Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and The Punisher. There are 13 series; watch them all in release order for the most complete story. Some are decidedly better than others, but taken in total it's quite an epic ride.
After that, if you're into YA material, watch Runaways and Cloak & Dagger.
At the end of all that, if you've watched literally everything and want to join the "100% MCU" club, watch Inhumans. Be forewarned: You won't like it.
Going to get downvoted but, daredevils the only show worth watching
Release order is better
Why do you say that?
What are the differences? Really just Captain America and Captain Marvel, right? Would seem to be odd to have Captain Marvel so early on to have her disappear for 20 movies.
This. I never understood the need to view Marvel Studios' films in chronological order. The ideas and concepts are slowly eased in with release order. Starting with First Avenger and Captain Marvel makes very little sense to me.
One little correction Black Panther is in-between Civil War and Spider-Man, they state that its been 1 week since T'Chaka death
The Wizard of Oz with the volume muted and Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon album playing instead.
(sometimes refered to as the Dark Side of Oz )
Schindler's list
Haha great call! Really blends in well.
Hey y’all, I’m a marvel newbie and I for long wanted to start watching marvel movies (like all of them) but in what order should I go? Like chronological, release date, any other specific order? thank you.
Release order is the best way to go.
If you're specifically trying to get into the MCU first, I would recommend watching the Infinity Saga, and then after Endgame, go back and watch stuff like the Defenders Saga shows and pre-MCU Legacy movies like Spider-Man and X-Men. Then continue the MCU with the Multiverse Saga and the shows that come in that era like WandaVision and Loki.
Always watch/read/whatever stuff in release order the first time.
The order they released
Always release order. I'll never understand why this is even a question.
The overall recommendation tends to be release order.
Personally I'd say chronological but that's because my brain keeps up better without the whole "oh this must happen before X event and that's why they're here" thoughts. Only thing I'd say to watch out for in chronological order is that the Captain Marvel post credit scenes won't make a ton of sense.
I recently restarted watching the MCU but I don’t think I have seen most of the non-MCU movies and some references and the storyline make no sense without watching them.
Can someone provide me with the list of every Marvel movie in watch order or just the non-MCU ones?
I have searched almost every corner of the internet but just couldn’t find anything about the watch order of both MCU and non-MCU movies so I would be really grateful.
Lets try and think about this.. "Non-MCU Movie" (you said Movie).. but still in pieces, and u still have to put together
Spiderman 1-3 (Raimi films) introduces origins of Peter 2 (Tobey Maguire), Harry Osborne, Doctor Octopus, Sandman
Amazing Spiderman 1-2 (Webb films) introduces origins of Peter 3 (Andrew Garfield), Lizard, Electro
WandaVision to introduce how Scarlet Witch became corrupted, also introduced her kids Billy and Tommy
X-Men (2000), X2 (2003), X-Men Last Stand (2006), X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014) to introduce origins of Professor X (Patrick Stewart)..
What If S1 (2021) for Captain Carter, film introduces a variant of her
Inhumans (2017) for Black Bolt, film introduces a variant of him
Fantastic Four (2005) for Reed Richards, film introduces a variant of him
Obviously, Deadpool 1 and 2 films (also non-MCU) for Deadpool, Peterpool, Blind Al Shatterstar, etc
On top of the X-Men films mentioned earlier, X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009), The Wolverine (2013), Logan (2017), for Wolverine, film introduces a variant of him.. also X23 origins
The X-Men films also give Professor X's background, and Cassandra Nova is his twin.. also other character origins (Sabretooth, Pyro, etc)
Daredevil (2003) and Elektra (2005) for Elektra Natchios
Blade (1998), Blade II (2002), Blade Trinity (2004) for Blade (Wesley Snipes)
Fantastic Four (2005) for Johnny Storm
Loki series to explain Alioth & the Void, plus the TVA where Hunter-B15 & Paradox are from
Just started typing on the commute, Will continue to edit if i think of anything to add..
Dang it really explains everything I wanted to know
plus real effort has been put into this.
I really appreciate it. Thank you.
There is no MCU movie where you have to watch a non-MCU movie for it to make sense. You don't even have to always watch other MCU movies for most of the MCU movies to make sense.
But if you want a list of all Marvel movies ever, here you go.
I meant like the appearance of Andrew Garfield Spider-Man and Tobey Maguire Spider-man in No Way Home, and also the X-men and the Fantastic 4 aren’t much in the MCU in the movies which make me lose track of the background.
Anyways, thank you for the list and everything.

Why is Captain Marvel down twice.
ChatGPT made the list for me. I didn't notice that
So I'm sure this has been asked many times but I'm in a bit of a different scenario.
I have found some fan-edits, of some tv shows turned movies.
I have a collection of 132 movies that are Marvel based/adjacent and was looking in creating a watch order of them to fit chronologically through the storyline(s).
(Some Marvel TV Shows I will watch the entire shows as I love them, others I will only watch the movie condensed fan-edit)
TV Shows:
Movies:
> So I'm sure this has been asked many times...
Remarkably, you're not the first to ask (this week!).
If the "fan edits" movies (by which, I presume, you mean video files, as many of the entries in your list are TV shows) are just cut-down versions of the original content, then surely the chronological order to watch everything that is connected will be the same as the full-length versions.
However, yes, you do have a few entries that are outside the established Marvel Cinematic/TV Universe (including, but not limited to, Sony's Spider-Man Universe), and those are not connected or follow the same timeline and/or character development - so finding somebody who has watched everything you listed and can cohesively and comprehensively connect all the content is quite the challenge!
PS. From u/Nearby-King-8159 in a later thread comment:
Your list includes a bunch of TV shows that were conceived to be canon, but have since been deemed non-canon/non-essential since Marvel Television was shuttered.
Marvel posted their own comprehensive list 2 weeks ago that's more or less the same, but is absent AoS, Inhumans, Agent Carter, Runaways, and Cloak & Dagger.
Your order for post-Endgame is also different from the official list.
As for what's left (Blade trilogy, Daredevil/Elektra, old Fantastic Four films, old Cap films, old Punisher films, old Ghost Rider films, Bixby/Ferrigno Hulk, Hulk '03, Strange '78, Howard the Duck, Generation X, Hasselhoff Fury, Generation X, pre-Sony Spider-Man, Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, Legion), those can all just go after Loki S1.
ah so you include them after loki season 1 since it's kind of a universe split/timeline ambiguity spot?, so youd put them after loki season 1 but before the x men series?
so example would be
loki season 1 -> season 2 -> all different movies then into --> x-men movies which then leads to shang-chi etc.. rest of that image?
?
That would be good, yes.
