Chronological Order
The chronological order of the "How to Train Your Dragon" franchise, including movies, series, and shorts, is as follows:
Additional Context
Some users noted that certain shorts like "Legend of the Boneknapper Dragon" and "Book of Dragons" could fit within the timeline of the "Riders of Berk" and "Defenders of Berk" series due to their content [1:2]. Additionally, there are comics set between the second and third movies that expand on the storyline
[4:3].
Viewing Platforms
Most of the content, including the first movie, HTTYD: Legends, and Race to the Edge, is available on Netflix [3:1]. However, availability might vary by region, so checking local streaming services or purchasing DVDs/Blu-rays might be necessary for complete access.
By following this order, viewers can experience the full narrative arc of the "How to Train Your Dragon" universe in a coherent manner, understanding the development of characters and plot across various media formats.
Please don’t include a link. Usually they are all not up to date and don’t include the recent films, shorts, and series. I’m not looking for books only animated screen adaptations. Thanks! I just want the chronological order not the release order. Thanks in advance!
It's like how Zealous said, but Legend of the Boneknapper and Book of Dragons could also take place during Riders/Defenders of Berk, as they come across and discover the dragons seen in the short. For example, they record Changewings into the manual in Gem of a Different Color, whereas they have detailed pages for it in the short.
1- how to train your dragon 2- legend of the Boneknapper dragon 3- book of dragons 4- gift of the night fury 5- riders of berk 6- defenders of berk 7- dawn of the dragon racers 8- race to the edge 9- how to train your dragon 2 10- how to train your dragon: the hidden world 11- homecoming
Thanks! So that’s all the animated content for httyd? What about httyd legends shorts on Netflix? Is that the same thing as the boneknapper one?
That is the boneknapper and the book of dragons
Dawn of the dragon racers is after edge as far as I’m aware ?
Nope, it's before. Remember when Astrid indirectly told Hiccup that the colour red really fit him? Well, guess what. In Dawn of the Dragon Racers Hiccup's undershirt was green, and afterwards he changed it to a red one in Race To The Edge!
Hello there. I am good fan of HTTYD universe, and I remember watching it as a quite young kid very well. Now however, that I am 19 years old, I wanna come back to it. See it all again and know how entire story in HTTYD goes. I found an blog/article about order in which movies and cartoon should be watched, to understand entire official canon story easily, however I want to ask, just to make sure.. Is the order listed here correct?

The website is wrong about 1 thing. HTTYD 2 is on netflix and also you'll love it if you watch the tv series and the movies. You might just be our new r/httyd regular redditor.
Yes the website is correct! Enjoy your HTTYD adventure!

So if I watch it all like this I should get full story? Well okay then. Just a question though, since my main language is Polish... Would you or anyone else mind listing me titles order in my language? I guess I could have some trouble making sure I watch in proper order.
Currently rewatching
First movie / 3 shorts bonenapper, book of dragons, gift of night fury / season 1 riders of berk / Season 2 defender of berk / Short dawn of dragon racers / Season 3-8 race to the edge / Second movie / Third movie / Short sheep chronicles / Short dragon homecoming / Short snoggletog log /
I kinda live in Poland and I have a bit of an issue getting all series names correctly. Would you mind getting me a Polish list from somewhere? I hope that's not an issue. They just tend to change names of movies differently for different countries, same goes with cartoons
Hey!! Here's what I was able to find. Getting this list was kinda hard since my native language is spanish, but I hope I was able to get everything correctly!! I couldn't find the polish translation of the Snoggletog Log short unfortunately, but it's the last one on the list. Hopefully you'll be able to find it!
•Jak Wytresować Smoka •Prezent Nocnej Furii •Legenda o Smoku Gnatochrupie •Smoczy Podręcznik •Jeźdźcy Smoków •Jeźdźcy Smoków: Obrońcy Berk •Świt Jeźdźców Smoków •Jeźdźcy Smoków: Na końcu świata •Jak Wytresować Smoka 2 •Jak Wytresować Smoka 3 •Jak Wytresować Smoka: Święta w Domu
I’m sorry but where can I watch the shorts ? Is it just called bonenapper?
you can find that movie in full HD in Trailers(dot)TO
It was a hell of a ride on this journey with everyone, but it was a shame to have ended this way we all have split paths but, in the future, it shall be remembered.
I've seen the first movie and want to watch the rest of the movies, shows, shorts and specials in the best order, so can someone explain? I don't really care about the movieverse books and comics or the bookverse books, just the stuff I can watch.
I made a post about this 2 days ago, you can find it here: https://www.reddit.com/r/httyd/comments/u9yetf/complete\_and\_comprehensive\_watchread\_order\_of\_all/

This has been asked about 6 billion times
Can anyone tell me the chronological watch order for httyd whole franchise? I've been getting confused on what is the right order
How To Train Your Dragon
Legend Of The Boneknapper
Gift Of The Night Fury
Book Of Dragons
Riders Of Berk
Defenders Of Berk
Dawn Of The Dragon Racers
Race To The Edge
HTTYD2
The Hidden World
Homecoming
Crazy how much effort was put in between movies 1 and 2. I feel like there was so much missed potential between 2 and 3.
Even before The Hidden World came out, the one year gap really bugged me. Not just because there's a lot less potential for filling in the gaps, but because it diluted a huge part of my emotional connection to these films.
The three films came out at three different times in my life. I was 10 years old when the first movie came out and 14 with the second one, and it really resonated when I saw that there'd also been a five year time skip in-universe. I loved this franchise and these characters, and it felt like they'd grown up with me (the fact that the spinoff shows filled in the gap only heightened this effect).
So then another five years passed and I was just starting college, and seeing bearded Hiccup in the first poster made me even more excited. But then it turned out that, while another five years passed for me IRL, The Hidden World picked up right after the second film and the time skip wasn't until the very end.
The separation at the end is fairly emotional, but if there'd actually been a time skip and it was the older, bearded Hiccup who let Toothless go, it'd have hurt me more than Toy Story 3 did.
1 and 2 are separated by 5 years.
2 and 3 are separated by like one year.
yeah the development between ice covered berk and the overpopulated berk was so missed out
Don’t forget the comic books that happened between movies 2 & 3
Where did the pinned post made by the mods go? It was saying the order.

After all the memes on Instagram I just watched the Croods, and then how to train your dragon (still fav movie) and they both just left me with a happy slightly nostalgic feeling and looking for something like that.

I didn't get into the series ironically until the remake came out. I was 6 (born 2004) when the original came out. I was 10 when the 2nd came out but by the time I really knew what the franchise was, I was 13 and in my edgy phase of life. I was only watching PG-13 or R rated films thinking "G and PG films are for kids...." I eventually got out of it but I had already forgotten about How To Train Your Dragon. By that point I sort of convinced myself to judge it as "boring" by it's title. But that all changed in May 2025. I wanted to take my 14 year old sister out to a movie because I was bored and I wanted to spend some quality time with her. There were only two films that she could plausibly sit through. How To Train Your Dragon (2025) or Lilo & Stitch (2025). She had already scene Lilo & Stitch so I took her to How To Train Your Dragon at the suggestion of my father. We both thought it was pretty solid (8/10 as both a standalone and a remake despite the start/stop pacing, but she gave it a 9/10).
And then, with my family, I was trying to convince them to watch the original with me, and during my birthday party (which was just me, my dad, his girlfriend, and my sister) I got my wish. My dad rented the film on Fandango (so that I didn't have to settle on my birthday) and we sat down and watched the original. And it was absolutely incredible. It was a textbook 10/10. Absolutely nothing I could even think about nitpicking. Pacing? Perfect. Writing? Perfect. Characters? Perfect. Animation? Amazing. Humor? Hilarious. Villain? Amazing. All I could think to myself after was "What was I thinking? Why didn't I let myself watch this when I was younger?!"
And then we watched the second a month later. And despite the fact that I felt like Astrid wasn't as present as I would have wanted her to be and the amount of the "Idiot Move" trope I counted, it was a very worthy sequel that earned a 9.5/10 from me for nailing absolutely everything else.
I still have yet to watch The Hidden World (no spoilers in the comments please!) but I have high hopes for it.
Anyone enjoy my story?
Uh ok if you have to Watch it yea... you are going to understand why i #####( ah no spoilers! Sry! Yea maybe you like it! )
I’m so glad new people are getting into it. It’s pretty deep, it’s not just for kids. If you weren’t aware already there’s a series on Netflix called race to the edge that has the same characters set between the first and second movies. It’s very beloved in the fandom and I highly recommend it. The animation is more budget and there’s some filler in there, but they have a lot more time to flesh out charecters and their relationships, which it sounds like you’d enjoy. Plus it had one of the best written and my personal favorite villains (Viggo)
Title says it all. I'm just curious to know if there's any dragon movies to watch that I haven't already seen.
For reference, here's a list of the ones I've seen:
Anything like that one Harry Potter, Hobbits & GoT are mostly one offs or aren't dragon focus enough.
Same goes for those documentaries, I've seen 'em ;)
I'm not against series suggestion at this point either.
Damsel which came out on Netflix earlier this year I think would be right up your alley. It wasn’t something that left any massive impact on me, but it was an enjoyable watch
Welp, I'm glad you suggested it because I did enjoy it despite some minor points I disliked.
The end had a good payoff and the dragon herself was worth the 1.5hrs.
Yeah haven't heard great things about this movie, but the dragon design is REALLY cool.
May give it a try later, I think I've already watched a compilation of the dragon's scenes on YT but eh, can still be fun.
I just saw this, and I personally enjoyed it. Elodie is kinda badass. I would watch again.
The Hobbit has an amazing dragon
The most recent Dungeons & Dragons movie (2023) has a great dragon that you won't expect how it looks.
Seen it ahah
Yeah when you first see him I was like "Oh he's a chunky boy isn't he" and then the reveal delivered. Honestly wasn't expecting it.
Vox Machina has Dragons in it, mostly in season two if I recall.
DOTA: Dragon’s Blood has dragons
Dragonlance: Dragons of Autumn Twilight. Haven’t seen this, but I’ve read the novel and dragons are in it a lot.
Mulan, 1998
Live Action with the Same Script is pretty new. Excited to See the Outcome. Worked well with Wicked
that’s an adaptation of a stage show though, not a movie that already exists
Guess I'll learn how to train my dragon
The funniest thing about this movie is that Toothless looks like an HD version of old version.
And EVERYONE ELSE looks like they are cosplaying a HTTYD character.
Hiccup in this picture looks like Martin Freeman
The design for the crooked toothed dragon (Forgot the name, the red one) just looks like your average fire dragon you would see in Fantasy movie or videogame. They did not even try to make him accurate to his cartoon counterpart.
Yeah. Astrid’s is alright but (I think it’s hookfang or something?) looks so generic.
What irked a few people is they seem to have gone out of their way to make the blokes as close to the animated version as possible.
And very much changed the women.
I just wish the live action dragons looked like live action dragons, just to switch it up a little bit?
I think the other dragons looked a lot more realistic, only Toothless kept the very cartoonish look.
At least it looked like that in some shots I randomly saw.
Especially when the animated dragons had such unique looks and expressive faces.
Which is a shame, because the slightly more realistic dragon designs of the live show that happened once would be a great basis for these.
