TL;DR Scorpion and Sub-Zero have unique strengths, making them formidable opponents. Scorpion's teleport and mix-ups can be countered with strategic blocking, while Sub-Zero's range and combos require careful pressure and prediction.
Character Strengths and Weaknesses
Scorpion is known for his teleportation move, which can feel almost instantaneous and is a significant part of his offensive strategy. His mix-ups can be challenging to predict, making him a tough opponent [4]. However, his teleport is a high attack, meaning it can be ducked or blocked effectively if anticipated
[4:2]. On the other hand, Sub-Zero boasts impressive range with his slide and has easy, safe combos
[1:1]. His mix-ups are also difficult to counter, often leading to a guessing game for the opponent
[4].
Counter Strategies
To counter Scorpion, gaining a life lead and forcing him to chase you can be effective. Mashing down attacks can prevent him from executing his moves successfully [4:1]. For Sub-Zero, staying out of corners and catching him on whiffs is crucial since he tends to jump and slide frequently
[4:1]. Crouch blocking can help against Scorpion's high attacks
[4:2], and applying consistent pressure can disrupt Sub-Zero's rhythm
[4:3].
Learning Through Practice
Playing as Scorpion and Sub-Zero yourself can provide insight into their moves and combos, helping you anticipate their actions better [4:4]. Practicing in lab mode against AI can also refine your skills and improve your ability to counter these characters
[4:6].
Effective Matchups
Some players find certain characters to be effective matchups against Sub-Zero. Scorpion can punish Sub-Zero's iceball with teleport [5:1]. Jade is considered a strong counter due to her ability to control distance and avoid Sub-Zero's 50/50 mix-ups
[5:2]
[5:4]. Geras is another character that matches well against Sub-Zero, providing a balanced fight
[5:3].
By understanding the strengths and weaknesses of both Scorpion and Sub-Zero, and employing strategic countermeasures, you can enhance your gameplay and improve your chances of success in Mortal Kombat 1.
I'm a beginner who mains Scorpion and I have gotten a lot better so far, however I always seem to get dominated by Sub-Zero. I have practiced and now have Sub-Zero as a 2nd character in my arsenal, but everytime I'm online I end up picking Scorpion as a Kounter pick and it ends up working. I have a long ways to go in terma of kompeting, but who do you fighting game veterans think would be the better character for me to focus on & master?
Thanks,
Legend
I personally love scorpion because I've always played with him in other MKs but afaik subzero is way better in this one. I think you should aim to play a character you like more than one you play because it's better otherwise you might abandon the game due to not have the affinity and still struggle.
Also https://youtu.be/y6LwAIS6etk had to post it. Lol
Hahahaha, I like that
Sub zero is probably better because less people know his moveset
That is 100% true as well
Sub-zero, but scorp is no joke. Scorpion is a bit easier to use tho.
Sub's range with that goddamn slide is insane and his combos are super easy and very safe.
His low kicks and mixups are good as well.
Exactly, however I use the tournament variation with the enhanced iceball so I lose the slide however those mix ups
Don't use down or any low abilities poison is all over the floor.
Use the kunai and the tower consumable that boost fire dmg.
Use a character with a cheap anti ai combo since is set on easy, I used Liu kang, some people suggest Raiden with a specific pattern.
Avoid the first missile if you do it right the round should end before the next one appears, alternatively you can remove the missile with the right tower consumable, forgot the name tho.
Be careful with long combos AI swap has invulnerable frames so can fuck things up.
Repeat as much as you need, good luck.
Beat first try, thanks for the advice.
Np, glad to help.
Perfection is key? Stage 7 i think?
Not sure, I already beat it and now I’m on the Kano stage
Ah i see. Just wait until you get to the brutality every match...literally EVERY match or extra bullshit tower where you have to win with a fatal blow every match and the opponent has infinite fatal blows that do 90% damage. Or the fucking Raiden tower where he does amplified damage and you have 4 different modifiers sending shit that stuns you at you. Fuck the gauntlet and the idiot who approved of it. Everything else is okay.
Armor, Noob, Spam Tackle, Everytime they get close b2.
What's b2?
My AI Scorpion did it with some consumables and few dozen tries.
This may be slightly bias but I feel like scorpion
New era probably sub zero unless you really piss scorpion off first, old era then hanzo beats bi Han and kuai liang and Hanzo is anyone’s game
omg, guys, really? questions like this one are never ends in a good way. Winner will be the one who u love more. Done.
if we're talking about Hanzo vs Bi Han/Kuai Liang then Hanzo wins, if we're talking about Kuai Liang vs Bi Han then Bi Han wins
Can go either way for any versions in any timeline... except 3D era Sub-Zero. Dragons Medallion + Ancestral Armour? Scorpion's cooked
Scorpion mostly for that stupid Teleport which might as well be instant, as well as his mixups, and Sub-Zero for his even worse mixups. It's a constant guessing game, and I'm constantly guessing wrong. I have no idea how to deal with these characters and I'm at an absolute loss. What advice can you give me?
I'm also having trouble with Liu Kang, but that one isn't as bad. Still bad, but just not as bad as Scorpion or Sub-Zero.
Scorpion’s teleport is very telegraphed; unless your opponent is constantly cancelling become cosy with the block button. Sub Zero is more of a guessing game admittedly; you need to keep applying pressure and if you do fall into the 50:50 trap look for a pattern.
What character are you playing??
To add to this, crouch block. Scorpion's teleport is a high as you should be able to duck it, same with his spear. EDIT: like a moron I typed mid when I meant high
They are highs not mids
Mostly Kano this season, though I also main characters like Geras and Shao Kahn.
Take them on yourself- i mean play as them. Learn their main kombos. That's the best way to beat any character tbh. Once you know their moves and when the strings end you get a better feel for when to block and when to counter attack.
Can you post some footage of you fighting those chars? That would really help in giving you proper advice on what you might be doing wrong.
Try to lab in practice mode against the AI... it will help you alot
for scorpion the most important part is to get the life lead and then make him chase you then i like to play a little game and mash down 1 because he literally can’t do anything except try to jump on you subzero is a little more difficult but just make sure you can stay out the corner and try to catch him on whiffs cuz they love to try and jump on you to enforce their mix so try to bait them to jump and slide when they can’t get in other than that yeah it’s just guessing and letting them punish theirselves
I've played a fair bit of sub and the only characters I don't like playing are Jade and Jax. Jax might be personal but Jade feels like a losing match up.
I play New Era Geras and consider it a blessing every time an opponent plays Sub against me. It's a really fair matchup for Geras.
Jade tends to own him. His 50/50s can be death, so your best bet is to stay on the other side of the screen for as much if match as you can.
Good tip.
I think Fire is good against ice. Grass might be good as well. Been a while since I've played so memory hurts.
You might think that, but for some fucked up reason (according to the movie) you beat ice with water lol.
Scorpion works. He has to come to you and if he tries to throw out an iceball, you can react and punish him with teleport.
The new MK1 game is looking GREAT, especially the cast, and I really wanna get it (Once I get bored with MK11 and MK1 is cheaper) but 1 thing is putting me off: Who do I choose?
MK1's Sub zero's moveset is looking really nice, especially with more of the use of spears but he's Bi-Han and I prefer Kuai Liang.
MK1's Scorpion is Kuai Liang but I don't have a soft spot with him as much as Sub Zero (I've known Subby since when I was a child) and wish he was Tundra instead.
I'm definietly gonna play the other characters like Kenshi, Havik and maybe Liu Kang but between the 2 "ninjas" I don't know who to choose.
(Also I'm new to the MK series, played a bit of MKX and currently playing MK11l
Personally going with Sub-Zero just because of the way he says "Shang TSOONG" in his intros.
Fr tho I have yet to see how Scorps play but Bi-Han has been really fun in the beta.
I wonder why they're hiding Scorpion's moveset...
They showcased his moveset during one of the Kombat Kast. I think they aren't showing him due to the lore implications he might have for the story. Also the other main cast characters seems to have more deviations compared to Scorpion. I wished they did show some more matches with him at least.
They did a kombat cast with scorpion, one of the first characters they showcased
I always choose Subzero with Scorpion as backup but this time I also am conflicted since Scorpion is now Kuia Liang.
I never even knew who Kuia Liang is to begin with! At least not untill the release of MK1 lol
Scorpion because it's Kuai Liang and he's goated
Why choose when I can take them both at the same time 🤭🤭🤭
I COULD do that but who first then? Its really making me conflicted
You mean with one as a cameo right?
Haha! Omg. This is doing something to me…. And I don’t have the word for it lol
Sub-Zero is so much fun in this game so I’m starting with him. Scorpion also looks super sick, so he’ll be high on my list.
Sub Zero.
sub zero sempre
Sub pq o ataque magia básico é mais maneiro
noob
Sub-zero "Eu congelo o seu inferno... Su-su-sub zero."
Like In the original Mortal Kombat (1992) video game, Scorpion’s real name was unknown and he killed Sub-Zero in the first tournament. It was also revealed he had a wife and child before his death.
I totally understand that the 1995 film was focusing more on characters like Liu Kang, Sonya, Johnny Cage, and Raiden - I just wish the 1995 film adopted a similar concept to the 1992 video game in Scorpion and Sub-Zero’s rivalry even as a side story than just mere slaves under Shang Tsung.
"Scorpion and Sub Zero...DEADLIEST of enemies...mere slaves under my powers!" - Shang Tsung
Shang Tsung mentions their rivalry and how they're slaves under his control for the tournament.
If you wanna see their rivalry in live action, you have MK Konquest.
Or mortal Kombat 2021 since it’s literally the only thing that movie does right (despite Scorpion only being in the beginning and ending of the movie)
MK legacy has a great begining story for the rivalry.
Or the animated movie from the 90s
It's an hour and a half long movie, what would you have cut out to focus on their rivalry?
Deadliest of enemies.. But slaves under my power
So the Rivalry between Scorpion and Subzero would replace the 3 minutes that fight takes?
After playing enough KL, I can know see that I dread playing against sub Zero more than scorpion.
Scorpion players are just noobs, plain and simple. Take a little bit of practice to know how to get 2 flawless matches against them.
Sub Zero same shit, but it’s a little different. There are 2 types of players. Jumping players, and 2 kombo using players.
Lame as hell
Sub's 50/50 are a lot more menacing than Scorpion overall
Does Sub Zero have a third combo? What are all these other things you’re expecting them to do?
you cant let hin get his offense staryed. use ranged pokes to keep him back. always expect forward throws when your teching. always be ready for him to stagger his combo. he used to be annoying af for me too but i think ive washed the last 6-7 ive fought
Well he kinda limited what he can do
On the one said sub zero has only two major combos in his tournament form so he’s stuck repeating them
I play with a friend, the bastard beats me in 6 out of 10 matches. He uses Scorpion. I mostly use Sub Zero, the Cryomancer variant. I don't know how his katanas connect so much. If you get careless, he'll spam you 3 times, followed by the type of trip that Scorpion has, which takes away a lot of health. I can defend myself with some mini-combos, but they don't generate enough damage. If I take cover, he uses enhanced teleport or enhanced katanas. I also feel like Sub Zero has very little range on his hits; I literally need to be right next to him to connect. You know, when it comes to friends and in these games, you don't like the fact that you lose (sometimes). I sometimes use Clone (Grandmaster variant), but I run out of combos in the middle of the arena. I have to corner him to damage him.
Ninjutsu is amazing at whiff punishes and overhead low mixes
Block and punish
Sub zero clone is a counter to scorpions teleport, if you make a clone and then ice slide before scorpion can teleport then you can punish and freeze scorpion
Mortal Kombat 1 Scorpion vs Sub-Zero strategies
