TL;DR
Top Contenders
Oklahoma is frequently mentioned as one of the most competitive teams in college cheerleading. They have a reputation for impeccable form and consistency across their routines, making them hard to beat [1:1]
[4:1]. LSU is another team that is often predicted to perform well, with many considering them a top contender alongside Oklahoma
[1:2]
[3:2].
Other Strong Programs
Florida is considered a wildcard, capable of competing with top teams like LSU and Oklahoma when they peak [1:6]. Utah is known for coming in strong but sometimes missing the mark in finals
[3:1]
[4:8]. UCLA has had moments of brilliance and is seen as a potential underdog that could surprise with a win
[3:3]
[4:3].
Regional Advantages
Hosting regionals can be advantageous for teams like Utah, providing them with a home advantage that may help boost their performance [1:5]. This factor can play a significant role in the competitiveness of a team during the postseason.
Challenges and Upsets
The competitive nature of college cheerleading means that upsets are always possible. Teams like Missouri are seen as potential Cinderella stories that could disrupt the usual rankings [3:3]. The unpredictability of performances adds excitement to the championships, where even top teams can falter if they don't bring their best
[4:10].
Considerations Beyond the Discussions
While these discussions highlight some of the most competitive teams, it's important to consider factors such as coaching staff, training facilities, and recruitment strategies that contribute to a team's success. Additionally, keeping an eye on emerging teams and changes in scoring criteria can provide insights into future contenders in college cheerleading.
We have made it to the post season! My ranking of the top 10 teams, in descending order...
- Oklahoma - they finally put it all together this week, especially on vault. I think on an "on" day, their form is impossible to beat. Every routine in every lineup has genuine 9.9+ potential (and should arguably go 9.9+ if hit well), which I don't think any other team can say - including LSU. Given they haven't seen massive improvements week over week this year, I'm curious if they continue to make progress or if this is their ceiling. To me, whether or not they win comes down to how well they stick the vaults - as well as whether they have any wobbles on beam (which have snuck in a few times this year). It does feel like they are still kind of tweaking lineups on vault and beam - which is both good that they have depth and options, and a negative that they don't have a "go to" slate of gymnasts on these.
- LSU - an increasingly close #2 to me. It's honestly a little hard to judge LSU looking back on their scores over the season just because the home scoring can be...a choice. In contrast to Oklahoma, it feels like they have pretty much locked their lineups (with the potential exception of Kaliya vs. Lexi on vault) - and to me, each rotation still has 1-2 routines that should arguably go <9.9 even if the gymnast does their absolute best. However, their energy and performance quality (especially on floor) gives them a boost on the days that they are "on". I think to win Nationals, both Haleigh, Konnor, and Aleah need to have very good days on almost every event (and Haleigh has been looking a lot better recently).
Similar to last week, I see a big dropoff between the first 2 and the rest of the top 10:
- Florida - I've said it before, but their resilience the past few weeks has been impressive (and they've been moving up my list). I do think their most recent score was at least 3 tenths too high on Skye Blakely's bars alone. On almost every event except beam, they looked the best we've seen them all season, most notably on vault. Arana and Disidore have been incredibly impressive in stepping up and delivering on several events, and some of the one-eventers like Clark are real standouts. I just don't know if we see them repeat this in post-season - too many things have to go right, and under real pressure. Riley in the bars lineup continues to be a big liability, and we have to assume V, Leanne, Selena, and Anya all have very good days (which they did this past week!). They do still feel like the kind of team where an early fall somewhere in the lineup will really impact the performance of the next few gymnasts.
- Missouri - surprise! A new entrant in the top four for me, and a team that has really surprised me over the last few weeks. I've been waiting for them to get the landings and the details - and they've unlocked that in the past month. Similar to MSU and Kentucky, they are the fairly unique team where it feels like vault can be a real advantage on a normal week for them. And, it seems like they've really ironed out the bars and beam lineups. Having such strong anchors in Mara and Helen on each of those (that are near guaranteed 9.95+ if they hit) probably gives them a lot of confidence throughout the rest of the lineups. I'd love to see them make a real run not just at Nationals but at the final four this year - they feel like a special team with great energy, and their gymnastics is big and powerful. It will probably come down to being able to execute on the day on bars and beam, as well as the landings on vault.
- UCLA - first of all, given the beginning of this season + last season it's a huge win that a "bad week" for UCLA now is still a 197.4. That being said, obviously they weren't at their best and this weekend also exposed some of the core problems they have. I think their beam and floor issues are one-offs (they have been very strong on both all season) - I'm much more concerned about vault and bars. On vault, they need Emily Lee in there - it's too late for this but having Emma do a 9.95-level vault even would have been fantastic this year. (Brooklyn stepping it up for them has been a true game changer) On bars, it still feels like there are 1-2 slots where I kind of lack confidence in a 9.85+ score - and this is even with Frida getting fairly...generous marks on the Bhardwaj execution. I think for them to be a top 2 team we'd need Jordan, Emma, Chae to all have 9.9+ level days pretty much across events, and we'd also need Mika to make a real push towards scores that are 0.05 - 0.10 higher than what she's getting now.
- MSU - I still contend this is the top 10 team that gets the most underscored, especially at home! When they are "on" they have the best vault rotation in the nation - and beam this weekend (before Gabby's fall) was incredibly exciting and felt like a real breakthrough. The event I am probably most concerned about now is bars...it feels like there are a few routines in there that consistently go 9.75 - 9.85, which isn't going to cut it for the top four. And, I don't know if they've had enough consistency in the lineups both here and on beam for each gymnast to be extremely confident in what they can put up, especially in a pressure postseason situation - later in the meet with UCLA a few months back, they kind of melted a bit. They feel like a team that could either massively upset or get massively upset, which is an interesting position to be in!
- Cal - maybe I'm just too optimistic because I really like this team and they have great energy, but on everything except vault they have such beautiful gymnastics! And even on vault, the amplitude and form are clearly there but the landings just aren't yet. Given what we've seen, to me this doesn't feel fixable in post season. Bars has improved over the last few weeks as well, but we are still quite a bit below "peak Cal bars". They are a solid team and given the consistency this season, I would be surprised to see them get massively upset in Regionals, but again their ceiling just feels a lot lower than it was last year (sadly!) I am impressed how they've worked freshmen or people who haven't competed before into basically every lineup throughout the course of the year, and am excited to see them build on this depth over time.
- Utah - yes, they are this low to me! They clearly had their best meet all season (by a lot) this week which was fantastic and great to see for senior night. I feel the opposite of how I feel about Cal - something about the team dynamic, coaching, and energy just feels a bit off, and I worry that's going to manifest in how they perform under even more pressure. I could be wrong given Utah has made it to Nationals pretty much every year since forever, but I think too many things have to go right (similar to Florida) for them to credibly go 198+. While this past week was great, a lot of the senior meet scoring was still....generous and to me it wasn't a "real" 198. Vault in particular is not just weak but downright scary. It feels like something is just fundamentally broken here, and it unfortunately is really holding back their overall team score.
- Georgia - they could go even higher for me. I think they've been doing clean and dynamic gymnastics all season - if they had even one more star AAer, they are a clear top 5 team in my opinion! There's a few routines in each lineup that feel like almost guaranteed to be in the 9.8 range, unfortunately - and they also need some of the 1-2 eventers like Nyla Aquino, Anaya Smith, and Naya Howard to really get the landing (and ideally be 9.9+ versus 9.75-9.85). They did a lot of this in the past meet, which is I think why they finally nearly cracked 198. It may not be their year since they are arguably still in a rebuild, but I would be so thrilled to see them get to Nationals and have a strong showing - to me, that's the real win for them for 2025.
- Kentucky - I want them to be having an even stronger season, but I still think they've got a shot at Nationals on an "on" day. It's a real puzzle to me why they have several 9.95-max vaults in the lineup when they theoretically have so many vault specialists (or at least people who can do 10.0-vaults)...even not putting in Delaynee on vault in favor of some of the other 9.95s is confusing to me. Floor I'm not worried about - bars I need them to just not have a fall early. Beam, I think we unfortunately have to expect there is at least one routine with major wobbles, and again hope it's a good day and that's the drop score (versus having to count that and drop a fall).
A few other teams that I thought about for the #10 slot - Stanford (not seeing huge improvement, though they could surprise me at Regionals as they usually do!), Denver (I just don't know what's going on with them this season), and Oregon State (their home scoring sometimes feels a bit high - and I think their ceiling is just low).
There's Oklahoma and LSU. Then there's everyone else. It feels like anything is possible this year.
Happy (Regionals) hunger games. May the balance beam odds be ever in your favor
As a Denver fan, that is both a painful and accurate thing to read ahead of the post season 🤣😭
I could legitimately see LSU repeating, though I still give the edge to OU.
Florida’s #3 ranking is funny because it feels too high in terms of their nqs and average encompassing their whole season, but I also think that at this point in time they are legitimately the 3rd best team if that makes sense.
Mizzou is definitely my sleeper pick for fotf.
UCLA should be a lot better on bars than they are. I also don’t understand how Cal’s best event was bars when Janelle was there but that success hasn’t translated to UCLA’s bars when the talent is there.
Yeah fully agree on Florida - I don’t want them at 3 but who else is there at this point? 😂
Agree as well re: UCLA and bars…I have been critical of UCLA and others have reminded me we have not yet had a whole class that Janelle recruited. So I’m trying to wait for that to pass judgment but it’s hard haha
UCLA were great on bars the first year of Janelle. They were ranked 5th. Idk what happened the past 2 seasons. I feel like you could excuse last season with the depth being....weird... because of Olympic deferrals. There is just a point where excuses just become excuses.
I have only seen two UCLA meets this year, this past weekend's Utah meet being one of them. Frida's Bhardwaj makes me nervous, like she's going to hurt her shoulder when she catches the bar. It seems so whippy. Is that typical for her or did I happen to watch an off routine?
I am not that low on Utah, but I understand the reasons the OP has been down on them for a while now (not just this year). I also think Florida is not that far off from LSU and Oklahoma and certainly has a decent chance of winning it all. Another angle to think about is regional hosts. Utah is helped a lot by hosting a regional this year which is a luxury that the other top teams may not have, especially with Alabama lurking in the top 15ish seedings and also hosting a regional.
This is actually pretty close to how I’d rank them. Florida feels like a real wildcard to me; they could compete with LSU & OK or be 10th and neither would surprise me.
I think three is the exact number. I don’t think they’ll beat Oklahoma and lsu and i think they are better than everyone else now that they’re peaking and lineups are more set.
My surprise of the week was that a 197.975 was Georgia’s sixth highest scoring regular season meet ever. I know they’ve been on the struggle bus during the more recent bonkers scoring era, but they were great in the past. I mean, it’s Georgia, and it’s not like the scores weren’t flying in the 90’s and especially in the early 2000’s. A 197.975 seems sort of low for them.
I think the various senior nights proved that the alleged crack down on scores might be over. They still aren’t throwing as many 10s- unless it’s a Florida home meet- but the judges could only restrain themselves for so long. I can’t wait to see what the scores look like during the post-season.
Agree - they use to be so dominant! I was surprised too. Honestly also puts into context how much the team struggled in the CKC era 😬
So true! I really want to know what the culture was like during that time and what kind of head coach CKC was. Did she have a laissez-faire, hands off approach?
They got some great talent here. Love the diversity.
They’re all beautiful
fantastic
They got some great talent here. I love the diversity.
Now that we’ve had two high drama upsets (including LSU, who almost everyone predicted would win) what are your final predictions for Saturday?
My prediction: Oklahoma, Utah, UCLA, Missouri
This is rank-order from their rankings, but I feel like whenever Utah comes in hot to finals, they end up just missing. And Oklahoma often wins at nationals when the pack is closer to them than they usually expect (ie 2019 when UCLA looked just as strong if not stronger all season and had their shakiest meet in the finals or 2023 when Florida had their best and healthiest team roster in recent memory with DiCello-Wong-Thomas dominating lineups and just barely missed out). UCLA did great, but I think got some benefit from everyone being as hoppy as they usually are on vault and Missouri has a lower ceiling than the other finalists.
gymternet's gonna hate me, but: i think it's between ou and utah. if ou has a less than stellar showing (they're overdue for one this season) then utah seems the most likely of the three remaining teams to take advantage.
honestly I feel like they had their less than stellar showing at SECs and also yesterday during semis (like it was a solid meet but they gave so much away all day)
In my own opinion: Oklahoma winning would be boring, and Utah winning would be an abomination.
I'm admittedly a UCLA fan, but it would also be such a great Cinderella story if Missouri won. But ultimately (largely based on a number of extremely off-putting in-person encounters with Utah fans, and I know not-every-fan, etc.) I'd prefer any team over Utah.
Logical prediction: OU, Utah, UCLA, Mizzou
Dream: UCLA, Mizzou, Utah, OU
My prediction is exact the same. Alternatively I think whichever team gets the best vault score will win.
If there is an upset, I want it to be OU in second. It will be more exciting if that team won because they were lights out and less because of OU mistakes
UCLA 2018 repeat please 🤞🏻
Exactly. I’m tired of OU almost always winning, but the other teams are going to need to bring it.
My gut says Utah either wins it all or comes in 4th. No in betweens.
I would rather see OU win than Utah, and that’s saying a lot
I feel like I should shower after typing that
That seems about right. Utah always seems to either really bring it or really miss.
Wins it all?! Ugh
TBH, as a OU and UCLA fan, I didn't expect OU to perform so well last night. After beam, I had a feeling that they were gonna run away with the title. While I agree that they were a bit overscored on floor, I feel like their vault scores were legit. Even if they take slight hops, their form is impeccable. They were a bit nervy in the semis and at SECs (although that's comprehensible, considering it's their first time at SECs). It reminds me of 2019 when they were shaky in the regular season, but locked in at nationals. I really though Utah would come through, because of how they perfomed in semis and conference championships, but I also knew that a beam meltdown was possible because we've signs of nerves from them on beam during this season. UCLA did as well as I expected on vault, considering Mika being out and Macy not having competed vault for a few meets. I wasn't surprised by their slight mishaps on bars, because they seem to struggle with their landings on bars. At the end, they should be proud of themselves, even though nerves got the best of them on beam and bars.
Whether we hate it or not, the underdog mentality for OU is working. I think Utah felt more pressure than OU. Utah has been very close to winning in the last few years and they probably felt that this year, it could happen with Florida and LSU out of the picture. OU was more in a redemption mindset and it probably helped them ease the pressure.
It's funny how back then, we would always say that titles on won on beam, but nowadays, it seems like they're won on vault.
I find it hard to believe that Utah hasn't won a national title since 1995.
Winning 7 titles in 11 years is nuts! Also Jordan Bowers becoming the 4th aa champion from OU, after Garrison, Nichols and Webb.
OU winning did not surprise me. After that first rotation from OU on beam, I just knew they were gonna have one of those meets. It was spectacular. UCLA on the other hand also had a great start, but they just didn't have the same ceiling as OU and couldn't afford as many mistakes.
I expected Utah to give OU a run for their money.
After rotation one I texted my mom, who was watching the meet on TV, "Oklahoma ain't fucking around."
I could tell OU was locked in from the first 3 routines. They were great. I was SHOCKED and ecstatic for UCLA to come in 2nd. A great ending for them
Retrospectively, if the back half of that UCLA beam lineup copy and pasted their semi routines, they might have just eked out the win since OU took their foot off the gas a bit on bars. But UCLA just didn’t fully lock in. Chae, Katelyn and Ciena had those landings, but it looked like they didn’t fully settle into them, they were definitely nervy mistakes.
I think they needed two more stellar beam routines plus a near perfect bar routine from frida to tie or surpass OU. They were three errors away from winning.
OU won by 4 tenths. There was no realistic way for UCLA to make up that deficit on beam alone, even if all five counting gymnasts did the routine of their life. I think they could have made it up with a combo of beam and bars, but at that point you're talking a pretty different night than what they actually had.
I crunched the numbers and they would have been as close as it can get if all gymnasts did their best routine.
Emily Lee: 9.925 (FOTF), Katelyn Rosen: 9.8875 (Semis, drop score) Jordan Chiles: 9.9375 (FOTF), Chae Campbell: 9.9125 (Semis), Ciena Alipio: 9.95 (Semis), Emma Malabuyo: 9.975 (Semis)- Total: 49.7
The score they needed to tie would’ve been a 49.7125. If you want to go deeper into hypotheticals, Emma got a 9.9375 in the final with a very minor adjustment on her front aerial+ beat jump combo. If you assume that all of the judges deducted for that, she would’ve gone as high as 9.9875 with that routine, enough for a tie. I’m not sure if there is a tiebreaker scenario, I think 10 years ago or so Florida and OU tied for a title, don’t know if they changed the rules to require the tie to be broken now.
Were people expecting that any other team would win?
I’m a diehard UCLA and LSU fan, but it’s impossible to deny how polished and stacked OU is. Sure, we’ve seen some cracks in the foundation in the last year, but it would’ve required a repeat of uncharacteristic catastrophes to rewrite yesterday’s outcome.
When Florida and LSU were out? Nope. Utah and UCLA both had the ability to do it, but OU was ranked higher for a reason.
If UCLA had a perfect day and OU was below their normal, it was possible a la 2018. But I think the only team really capable of going toe to toe with OU at full strength was LSU and once they were out it really cleared the way for them.
Yeah, I expected OU to win, especially once they killed beam the way they did. As much as I love Mizzou and appreciate UCLA/Utah, I definitely found myself wishing Florida and/or LSU were there to make it a closer, more exciting comp.
OU showed up and earned it though, and I’m happy for them.
I’m 20 male looking to get into cheer for the first time as a base/thrower person haha. In high school I did dance and show choir stuff but never stunting. I’m going to a D1 college but there’s not a lot of guys that are in cheer and they don’t have a competition cheer team. Idk if they don’t have a lot of guys because nobody try’s out or because they only have limited slots. I’m just trying to do football games and such.
Do I need experience stunting? Could I make the team?
I cheered at a D1 school and I'm going to give a different persepective and say that you'll probably be able to walk on pretty easily, especially considering they don't have a competition team. Requirements are generally lower for male sideline cheer candidates because there are so few of ya'll to go around - as long as you're personable, willing to take direction from the coaches and/or captains, and try anything at least once I would say you have a good shot! More than anything sideline cheerleaders serve as representatives of the athletics department and the school as a whole when travelling with the football team to other campuses, so it's important to show the coaches that you're responsible, charismatic in front of a crowd, and just generally capable of performing in that role.
The one thing that may hold you back is tumbling if you don't have it already because a lot of D1 schools have a standing backhandspring or tuck as part of their fight song. If you have the time and extra cash before tryouts, I would look into classes or private lessons at cheer or gymnastics clubs local to you so you can work on nailing basic tumbling skills.
And I would definitely start stretching regularly in preperation and maybe google some basics of co-ed stunting videos just so you know what you're walking into. A male base's job is to be strong and sturdy beneath the flyer so if you're not in the gym lifting already, start looking into forming a regular routine there.
Good luck! I hope you make it :)
Unless you can stunt, tumble, or fly it will be very difficult for you to make a team. Since tryouts are in late spring or early fall I would spend the next few months at a local gymnastics or all star gym learning the basics of all 3.
If they aren't a competition team that is specifically coed, that means they don't "need" guys technically to fill the team. Expect to be judged at the same level that any other athlete trying out would be (which is usually a high level at D1 schools, but it varies). No free pass on having no experience just because you are male.
Make an action plan:
For the first time I can remember, I have a VERY clear top two in my mind - and then a bunch of other teams that could be in the mix depending on the day. I think it’s going to be a really exciting post-season because it genuinely feels like anything could happen.
The top two:
Oklahoma - feels like more of the same from them this weekend (in a good way!) I think it was scored somewhat generously, I saw it as more of a high 197 meet. Great to see Fatta show up well and the team withstand a tough meet by Pederson. My biggest questions going into post season are less about their performance and more about whether anyone is going to show up and absolutely knock it out of the park. As I’ve said the last few weeks, because we haven’t seen steady improvement from them over the season on the details I think they could get beat by an LSU on one of their amazing days, but they still feel like the likely winner.
LSU - it’s hard in some ways to disentangle the performance from the score here, as clearly the score was at least half a point lower (and arguably below that) versus what they got. I do love seeing Coen and others contribute more routines, as well as Bryant get closer to her normal form. I still see Chio as the clear MVP of the season. In reflecting on them as a team, they seem to have some kind of internal strength or engine that other top teams just lack. It keeps them going despite injuries etc and it seems to push them to do their best when the stakes are highest. I think this is what makes them most dangerous to Oklahoma come Nationals.
The next eight (roughly ranked):
-UCLA - with beam and floor now looking very solid, and vault and bars having at least a few near 9.9-9.95 guarantees, I think they have a pretty credible case for being a top four team this year. That being said it’s UCLA, so consistency will be the biggest risk. UCLA home judging is odd - I expect, for example, Jordan to be lower scored in post season - but other routines I think are somewhat harsh. How the first few do on vault and bars will probably be the make and break here.
-Florida - they always seem to squeak it out in terms of making Nationals, but I just feel such a massive delta between how they get scored and reality. They are this high on the list almost solely because of how Victoria, Gabby, and Alyssa have stepped up in the past few weeks - it actually feels plausible now they have a lineup of at least 9.85+ potential on every event, which is a huge credit to them with so much talent injured. My gut says this is just not their year - especially with AAers like Anya not doing all events - but I could be wrong. Selena has really impressed me this season, and Leanne is looking better and better too.
-Cal - I WISH I could be more excited about them as a top four team this season. They have the components and over the last few weeks they’ve given me a bit more hope as form and landings improve across events, especially on bars and floor. Vault continues to be just such a big hurdle for them - I’d love to see them get the Y 1.5s more consistent before post season in terms of smaller and more controlled hops, as it feels like they aren’t really sticking those this year. They have quite a bit of new talent in the bars and bean lineup - beam is looking good, on bars I think we need more people looking closer to the Maddie Williams form (as we’ve seen from Cal in the past). Let’s see what they can do…
-MSU - I love this team but I’ve lost a little bit of steam on them in the past month. I do think they’ve had a tough lineup in terms of meets - they get underscored sometimes at home or tend to go to schools / meets that are weirdly low scored across the board (Elevate this weekend was one example). But, I also feel like we haven’t really seen them put together a full meet scores all four events - this weekend vault was pretty weak, in prior weeks it’s been bars or more commonly beam. If they can land on a great beam lineup they may be top four potential, but they are also going to need Nikki, Gabby, Skyla to have their 9.9+ days instead of 9.8 days.
-Missouri - no, I don’t think their meet this weekend was really a 198. However…it was close! And they’ve made real progress this season on bars and vault that gives me some more hope for the post season. Similar to MSU I feel like we’re going to need to see Amari, Jocelyn, Hannah have their best days (and not just good days) to get anywhere near the top four. The tumbling is really dynamic and their gymnastics overall feels confident, so if they can get the landings I think we could see them make a real run at it. I’ve been super impressed by people like Kyra, Elise, Mara, and Kennedy (and of course Helen!) who only do one or two events but they are really show up every week.
-Georgia - call me crazy but I think we could see them at Nationals and even challenging for final four on a good day. The main question for me is if they are confident enough now to have the beginning and middle of the lineups really show up on the day. I worry the most about the people who just do 1 event, it seems like in each lineup they have 1-2 people who often go in the 9.7s. Lily, Nyla, JaFree, and Ady are really bringing it this year and I’d love to see them shock people in postseason with a huge performance.
-Utah - I got a weird vibe from Carly’s interviews this week, which I think is reflective of my weird vibe from the team overall this season. They don’t seem cohesive and focused. I know they’ve had a lot going on with Avery’s injury, Ella’s anxiety, and then it being Grace and Amelie’s last season. I found it strange that Carly said she thinks some of them are showing up to really perform, and some are showing up just to show up - isn’t this a core part of YOUR job as a coach, to help bring the team together? I may be way off but I worry that her lack of head coaching experience is going to leave this team in a tough position for a few years. We aren’t seeing them put together full meets or even improve week over week in the way they have in years past.
-Kentucky? This spot could also honestly go Stanford, Alabama, a bunch of other teams depending on the day. I would be more excited by the first two of those - Stanford needs to get vault together but it’s been awesome seeing them shine overall this season, and going back to Nationals would be huge. Kentucky still seems to be figuring out a few bars spots but beam looked improved this week.
My biggest concern with OU is fatigue. They have been putting up the same 4-5 all-arounders week after week all season long. While they look great now, at some point fatigue has to set in and if they have an injury or need to rest someone, they have very few other athletes with meaningful competition experience this season. I feel like they are primed to have a semi/finals breakdown again like last year. If they do (happily for me), I think it opens the door for UCLA or Florida or even MSU or Cal to have the meet of their lives and steal a title.
Cal’s ceiling this season is much lower than it has been in the past few. Frazier hasn’t been hitting 9.9+ nearly as consistent as last season, vault is still a liability for them, Williams hasn’t really been able to stick her bars dismount much… they’re just not nearly as sharp this season as they have been, so it’s hard for me to see any world in which they could steal a title as of now. UCLA, Utah, OU, Florida, and LSU have all been able to score higher than them even with some iffy meets.
Yeah I think this is fair - at the very least it’s creating a dynamic like at Michigan, though at least at OU a few of the AAers are freshmen (or at least not seniors).
OU feels like they are one injury away from disaster. They started the season very strong but I can’t see any progression, if anything a slight decline. I don’t understand with The exception of Faith Torrez why we see so little from the middle classes. Athletes like Caitlin Smith, Aspen Lenczner, Ava Siegfeld etc. It‘s not like they need to chase NQS the last few weeks and unless they have another stellar freshmen class they will need them next year with all the senior routines they are loosing.
LSU looked like the best team to me. That was a dominant performance. UCLA and Florida look like they have a shot at rounding out four on the floor along with Oklahoma.
Exactly…they have a solid argument for best beam team in the country
I fully expect them to finish in the top 10 on beam this season, while it'll probably be a win if they finish top 20 on vault. The dichotomy is fascinating.
Oklahoma to me still needs a lights out meet, and they haven’t done it yet. They have so much potential within their AA gymnasts. If they all can hit on the same day then game over natty goes to OU.
LSU for sure a bit of home cooking has helped, but no denying the talent on the team. Depending on how these two teams show out at nationals it could be either. I agree with you if OU doesn’t hit their full or close to full potential LSU seems more like the winner. I think LSU has shown more of what they are capable as a team this year than OU.
UCLA please just put together a solid meet and you’re in the final 4, but agree depending on how their beginning lineup does is the make or break for them.
Florida just needs to make sure those 9.85 don’t turn into anything lower than that to stay with the others. Also very impressed how much some of them have stepped up recently with all the injuries they’ve suffered this year.
Cal agree with you. Still need to put together vault and find those landings. I also feel like a few of them still haven’t hit their full potential yet this year.
MSU has had a few really tough losses this year with ucla and cal by a tenth or less. They finally put together a beam rotation over the weekend. They are still trying to find their lineups, and they seem to be running out of time to do that.
Missouri I agree their meet wasn’t a 198 but definitely a high 197. Their endurance is really great and they seem to be peaking right now so hopefully they can maintain this momentum going into post season. I need Helen Hu balance beam champ please and thank you.
Georgia they have great scores from the back half of the lineup just need to front half to minimize those 9.7s and get them to be counting 9.8s.
Utah don’t really watch them. I swear it was Carly who said they are doing lineups different, in the past years they pretty much knew lineups in the fall but this year they did it so it’s a week by week basis so anyone feels like they could make lineups. I swear this was her talking about it but don’t remember where I saw it, this could be why the team vibes are off. Now that they have to compete at practice for a spot weekly.
Kentucky has been good, I think they still need to get their first few athletes to get the ball going to really build up their scores. Their back half of the lineups are great.
I'm cutting Utah a little slack because of the Neff injury. Her at full speed is really a big plus and should settle down some lineups.
I completely agree re: MSU seems to be figuring out the lineups but is running out of time. I feel the same about Kentucky unfortunately….
On Utah, it actually makes me wonder a little bit on the coaching that Neff is back so soon. Same with Zirbes competing so many events through her anxiety. Feels like there is room for a coach to step in and do what is in the best interests of each athlete there, and I’m not convinced we’ve seen that
As someone who loves to hate Georgia because of SEC rivalry and because of how dominant they were for what seemed like forever, I will go ahead and admit that I'm excited to see them back in the conversation. They had far too much talent on their roster for them to consistently be on the bottom of the SEC the last few years. I remember last year when everyone went crazy that they almost made it out of regionals like that was a reasonable expectation for the level of talent they had and something to celebrate. They were absolutely capable of getting out of regionals and more with this roster and I think that's pretty clear now.
I think we all knew they were going to improve under the new staff but I honestly thought it would be at least another year until they were a real part of the conversation, but I'm very glad to be wrong. Seeing the progress they've made in such a short period of time is exciting.
I’m so insanely proud of Georgia. I hope they make semis just to really light that fire. I would love a storied program like that to be in the top 8/top 4 conversation again.
Using a throwaway so this can’t be linked back to me, my school or anyone on my squad. I don’t want to get in trouble by my coach or the athletics department for revealing secrets.
Like the title says I am 19 years old and recently joined my college cheer team. I have no prior experience at all with cheerleading and am honestly very surprised I even made the team. I have come to realize that cheerleading is no joke. It is probably one of the hardest things I have ever done in fact.
For context I have played high level soccer and ice hockey for my whole life and have never had a coach as strict, practices as intense or conditioning as brutal.
I know there’s a lot of misconceptions about cheerleading and I’m bored so Ask me Anything that pops into your mind!
congrats on making the team! I cheered for almost my whole life. was gonna do it in college but it was too big of a commitment and at the point I sort of lost interest lol. a couple questions:
what made you want to try cheer for the first time?
what were the criteria for making the team (i.e. tumbling skills, stunting ability, etc)
is it a competitive team?
good luck and have a great season!
A girl that was on my soccer team for years did cheerleading as well. She was super good and competed (and won sometimes I believe) at worlds every year. When I saw the competition videos I thought it was so cool! I wanted to be able to lift girls over my head and flip like that lol. But I never tried to join a team because I was too scared of trying something new. This year was my first year of college where I didn’t know anyone and had no friends so I decided to join a team. The soccer team was full but I saw they were holding try outs for cheerleading and pretty much said ‘fuck it’ and just went for it.
The team welcomes people with no experience so the try outs was basically a 3 day boot camp where they assessed general fitness level, flexibility, strength and attitude. They taught us a cheer, a dance and some basic stunts and jumps which we had to preform for the coaches on the last day. There was no real “criteria” that I know of aside from mental strength and a good attitude, as my coach says she can teach us the stunts and movements etc but she can’t teach us to have the right mental state lol.
We are a competitive team. This year there is a different group of girls who have started to cheer at boys games but don’t do stunts or tumbling and they are causing us a lot of grief lol
What makes it brutal?
Well first of all the sport is just extremely dangerous. You’re holding girls above your head and throwing them around as high as you can. There are injuries. Girls have competed with broken shoulders, concussions, sprained ankles and a lot of tape and pain killers lol. Also The conditioning is no joke. Half of all of our 3 hour practices is just conditioning. To be able to lift someone over your head over and over again while they’re moving around doing tricks, a lottt of strength and stamina is needed. We have daily workout routines we are expected to complete on our own time as well. Lastly our coaches are extremely hard on us (Which I have come to find out that by cheerleading standards they are normal.) If one person slaks off during practice, half asses their conditioning exercises or anything the whole team is suffering with even worse conditioning drills that take us to the point of girls puking.
Have your teammates or you played any pranks on one another? Like give a wedgie or hide a shirt?
When you are hoisting the girls up does your hand, maybe finger ever slip into her...area of pleasantness?
Lmaoo! No! Personally I’m a main base so my hands are mostly just touching her feet but the back base does have to push her up by the booty. I’ve never heard of an accidental vag slippage though.
What is your favorite genre of porn?
What are some college cheer teams that require no experience or just do sideline cheer
most d3 schools or NAIA schools, but like r/mshappy said, they’re going to be more expensive because they tend to be private institutions. i know the previous college i cheered at didn’t require any experience to make the team. the only thing i would recommend though is really familiarize yourself with the sport and practice stunting!!! due to lack of experience on the team (two other girls and myself were the only ones who had cheered before) i ended up with a dislocated elbow and had to have surgery.. so that’s why i suggest that!
do you also know ow any schools that don’t do competitive cheerleading
typically schools that don’t require experience don’t do competitive cheerleading.. i would recommend looking at my previous college but they’re on the verge of shutting down due to financial issues, which is part of why i transferred
Basically any NAIA school but they're more expensive than state schools
This is not correct, NAIA has competitive cheerleading as a varsity sport with scholarships.
I was a head coach at NAIA. Trust, they will take any kid- no experience necessary. Money is all that matters. And like I said they are more expensive since they are private schools
tryouts in a few days and having trouble choosing which team to pick. i know i want to be a flyer either way though. i don’t have much cheer experience (two years in high school) but i have a lot of gymnastics experience to make up for it!!
What style of stunting have you been practicing? Do you have coed experience or All Girl primarily? What are the suggested stunting skills for each team listed?
Look up each team on youtube, etc. and see what they look to be doing skills wise to get a better idea of if you would better fit one vs. the other. All girl will technically have more spots available for girls than coed will for girls...
I'm not sure of your stature & the college you are looking to tryout, but the standard to be a Coed flyer will differ depending on how competitive it is to make the team.
i’m 5’3”, around 117lbs, and trying out at UVa. I’ve done a bit of stunting with both but wouldn’t say I have experience in either. Is coed generally more competitive than all-girl? Is one considerably harder than the other or are they just different?
Coed is usually the "premier" team of D1 schools. It is often times more competitive as there are limited female spots on the team & generally the flyers will be very tiny for Coed stunting (though this will depend on the school and team....they need mid level pyramid flyers as well as top level pyramid flyers, so it just depends on who fits the puzzle best to make a full team). The stunting is not necessarily "harder", but it is a different skill set in terms of how to hold your weight and partner.
If you must choose between the two & are not confident yet in your stunting skills, then All Girl is probably a safer bet at your height as a relatively new flyer (as you will be competing with existing team members as well as new recruits).
I would say coed if you want to be a flyer, since you are more likely to be a good base or back in an all girl team, and having more competition for base/back in coed should make it so that you are more likely to get your flyer role :)
try out for both and let the coaches pick for you.
all girl may be easier for you since i've heard gymnasts who become flyers have an issue with not trying to balance themselves. with COED if you try to balance yourself even just a little bit, you are falling.
All girl imo, just feels right to me
Why does that "feel right" to you?
It just does. I'd feel more in-place and comfortable in a girls only team. But that's just me
In terms of competitivity, OU's. In terms of artistry, UCLA's. Nola and Tiana X BJ choreography will be amazing!
UCLA for sure but also very excited for Stanfords class! Only losing 2 seniors but a big and talented class coming in, hoping they can continue the momentum from winning ACC this year.
UCLA because I feel like I’ve been waiting forever for a Nola NCAA floor routine, and I’m over the moon that she’ll be working with BJ.
The high that UCLA fans experienced when Nola, Tiana and Jordis all committed the same day (in addition to Ava Callahan a few days prior) was unreal 🥰
I am soooooo stoked for Nola and Tiana at UCLA I am local and have been a Nola fan for a long time, her creepy floor is iconic. I cannot wait to see her on the UCLA floor
There's a terrible alternate timeline where BJ remained at Utah we never saw her working with UCLA gymnasts. TBH, I'm sure Val was the one who spotted BJ. I saw an Insta pic of BJ with Val in 2019 with BJ captioning "thank you for welcoming me in the UCLA family".
BJ is so LA. Her being at Utah still feels like a weird fever dream sometimes.
Stanford. Jennifer Williams, Ana Barbosu, and Levi Jung-Ruivivar (yes I know)
I forgot Stanford!
Wow. Just wow. What a team honestly
I think Tiana I’ve always been into her on beam and floor and I think UCLA finally has good vibes for an entering class to come into. Also I live in Sweden and it will be fun to see the Swedish gymnasts
With NCAA, gymnasts don't have to do long bars routines. They can do a toe-on + Maloney + Pak and dismount and voilà!
She’s got clean form too, a lot of the times taking out the difficulty makes for clean, great ncaa bars
It helped me get through the rough 2024 season, tbh
