TL;DR
Croydex Toilet Seats
Croydex toilet seats are frequently mentioned as durable and reliable options. They have a reputation for staying fixed and not slipping, which is particularly important for heavier users [3:1]. The adhesive pad under the fixings helps ensure stability and longevity
[3:1]. Users have reported satisfaction with Croydex seats over several years without them coming loose
[3:7]. However, some users noted issues with soft-close mechanisms failing after a year
[1:5].
Church Toilet Seats
Church toilet seats are another brand that has received positive feedback for durability. They are known for having metal hardware, which is preferred over plastic due to its robustness [2:1]. This brand also offers soft-close features, which many users find beneficial
[2:2].
Material Considerations
When choosing a durable toilet seat, material plays a significant role. Wooden seats are often recommended over plastic ones, especially for larger individuals, as they provide better support and prevent pinching [2:11]. Solid oak from Croydex was mentioned as a superior option compared to MDF or plastic
[3:10].
Additional Tips
It's essential to measure your toilet before purchasing a seat, as sizes and shapes vary and can affect fit [1:7]
[2:6]. For families with small children, consider models with a smaller flip-down seat for easier potty training
[2:6]. Avoiding cushioned seats is advisable, as they tend to crack and become uncomfortable over time
[4:1].
In summary, Croydex and Church are standout brands for durable toilet seats, with considerations for materials and additional features like soft-close mechanisms enhancing user experience.
I'm actually serious.
Renovated a bathroom. Previous seat is about 20 years old and not a problem with it apart from colour doesn't suit room as it's a shade of white darker.
Looking on Amazon there just seems to be a load of complaints of every one of them like the markets been flooded with cheap plastic rubbish.
Has anyone bought one recently they have no complaints about?
Is there a really good brand of seats rather than random Chinese names?
Screwfix Croydex toilet seats are good, and universal fit.
I bought a Croydex toilet seat from Screwfix. While it is a sturdy seat, the plastic chrome on it starts to peel and turn green, and it stains on some parts where the plastic is rough (around the hinge).
I have the Croydex Constance and it was brilliant but the soft close has died. Only lasted a year if that.
I went through four cheap B&Q and Amazon seats (kept loosening) before I got a croydex flexfit. It's been solid for a couple of years now.
Yes Croydex are decent, providing they have a model that matches the shape and size you need.
Available on Wickes, Amazon etc too
Over the last 6 years I’ve installed 5 or 6 of these between mine and my parents house. They are amazing. The only seat I’ve ever had that has zero wobble, and is super easy to fit. And if/when you want to replace it, it just pops off and the new one clips on. Bonus points that it’s soft close too.
Yep, I have that and the quick release is so handy for cleaning that nasty area just under the seat.
Just clean the seat, click it off, wipe the bowl, click it back on, bosh.
Did you know you have to measure it too? Turns out they’re not standard, even aside from the different shapes. I could only find mine at Screwfix. It’s a soft close that’s easy to remove and I’m happy with it.
Did you know you have to measure it too?
This blew my mind when I replaced my then-girlfriend's now-wife's toilet seat two or three years ago. I can't remember how I twigged before I went out and bought a random toilet seat, but glad I did.
Crazy, isn’t it? I’d bought one already, thankfully I happened to place it on the rim before opening the plastic wrap, to find it was nearly 2” too short and also too wide.
Drives me nuts when a simple 2 minute job becomes a deep dive into “the history of the toilet” “what shape do toilets come in?” “how to measure your toilet” and then spending hours trying to find one that fits 😂
It’s why I’ve yet to touch plumbing. I’m not scared of it so much as I’m horrified at the 50-million-different-pieces catalog of… stuff.
This is not a time to shop on Amazon. Go into a local plumbers merchants, bathroom supplies etc and find a good quality one that matches.
I think you replied to the wrong post and the wrong comment.
As for brand. The clapper 500 super deluxe++. With hidden sloft close hinges.
I believe the chemical is chemical formula ({C_{27}}{H_{36}}{O_{10}}).
Tell me to put a lid on it if I'm talking shit.
First time doing a seat switch out. I figure it will be easy but no idea what to buy for comfort purposes. Willing to go high end on the budget.
Make sure you know what shape all three seats need to be. In the USA at least, it should be either “round” or “elongated.” Otherwise you will be standing in the aisle at the store second guessing yourself.
If you have kids, look for a model with a smaller flip-down seat. It’s made life a lot easier for us in potty training our littles. The ones we have use a magnet to hold them against the lid, so the experience for adults is no different.
I can’t agree with this more. We changed all of our seats to this and they are great. They are also soft close.
Solid advice. You don't want to glancing around the aisle, making sure the coast isn't clear, so you can hold a packaged toilet seat up to your butt to gauge the size.
Just get the high quality ones, the ones I have if I don’t hold the seat for a few seconds after I lift it it starts to close on its own in the middle of my piss for some reason . Fine when I’m sober, tragic when I’m not.
That means the seat is mounted too far back, or the tank too far forward, not due to the seat itself.
The mounting holes in porcelain are oversized and allow for some adjustment. Try loosening the bolts on your seat and I bet you'll be surprised how far it will move. Pull it forward and tighten 'em up, then enjoy doing your business with both hands.
Fun fact, this happened and I broke my FILs toilet seat. He said that in his 50 years working in construction, he's never seen someone break a toilet seat in half lol.
Most stuff's been covered, but worth covering again:
Soft close changes lives.
Church has done right by me, plus I get to crack jokes about 'going to Church', which is a bonus that shouldn't be overlooked.
One thing, go for metal hardware - eg, hinges, bolts. Plastic is pure shit. Pure shit belongs in your toilet, not on it.
100% agreed on the plastic. I got a cheap soft-close seat, and the "bolts" and "nuts" are pure shit, and just fall off randomly.
Get a quality seat with quality fasteners and hinges and enjoy never having to think about them again.
Bought a high end toilet the other day, $1.6k. That shit opens up when you walk in the bathroom. It’s fucking magical.
Also, I’m not even wealthy. It’s literally the most expensive thing in my house.
What is it? The highest end toto goes on sale for less than 1k
When we moved into our new old house, the toilet lids (switch to soft close) and light bulbs (switch to LED) were the first things we did. My kids were used to soft close and they slammed those suckers right and left.
Get a wood one and not the plastic ones. If you're any bit on the chonky side it will pinch your ass between the seat and the toilet on the edge...im fat. I know this is a fact...
I have relatives who are quite fat (their preferred term - they hate euphemisms like “large”!), and no matter what toilet seat I fit (I have tried a few types), it always ends up slipping.
Can anyone recommend a toilet seat that can take a lot of weight and stay fixed long-term? Several models advertise themselves as being up to the job, but I remain sceptical. Would love to hear from anyone who has found a good one.
Get a squat toilet.
No more worries about the seats breaking.
Search for bariatric toilet seat
Fat guy here. Currently using this one. https://www.argos.co.uk/product/3261956
It feels flimsy, but I reckon it's indestructible because of the material. I had to lubricate the hinges to stop it making a godawful loud creak every time it opened, but it hasn't budged at all.
The other thing to note is that the seat only opens up to 90° so it may not open as wide as you'd want it to.
Whenever I go to America, I’m always amazed at their toilet seat for fat people tech. Maybe try an American brand?
I’m also amazed at the amount of water they put in the bowl. And the gaps in the public toilet cubicles. But that’s not what we’re here for
Edit: I’ve been downvoted but I’m serious, all their public toilet seats are like, heavy duty shit.
Edit 2: balance has been restored
There the only seats I have installed for years. Literally 100s of them. IV had maybe 2-3 damaged on arrival. Never had one fail or come loose
Croydex seats. There moto is always fits, never slips.
Only replacement seats I fit (as a plumber) now, get fed up of going back because they come loose. Never had a croydex come loose in 6-7 years of using them.
They have an adhesive pad under the fixings. Work a treat they do.
Yep, I second croydex. Very pleased with the one I fitted a year or so ago, no movement whatsoever and unclips for easy cleaning
Seconded croydex but I found their solid oak kind much better than MDF or plastic just because it's a much better material for holding screws tightly.
Any trouble with splitting over time? I’ve had my share of arse pinches
Reminds me of the amazing squatty potty adverts 😂😂
Different flushing mechanism, so American toilets have a bowl with a large water surface area. http://www.badperson.net/2019/09/american-vs-european-toilets.html
Is it possible to have a cushioned toilet seat that isn’t gross and cracks after a couple of years? Also ours weirdly have turned blue on the seat and we don’t use blue cleaner in the toilet
have you tried a bidet?
I have a bidet attachment but I just mean a comfy seat in general
You can get gel seats that are better than the padded ones
The cushioned ones do crack after awhile. The plastic gets brittle eventually. I think you should just plan on replacing it regularly.
Hello. We recently replaced our old toilet seat (Kohler; seat that came with the toilet - K4436) because it had a crack in it. The new one is "American Standard - Moments #1694169". I'm not sure if it's just placebo effect of not being used to it but it feels a lot less comfortable.
Sometimes I'm on the toilet for 30+ minutes if I get really into the book I'm reading. But on this one I can start to feel uncomfortable after 5-10. For some reason it feels "harder" or perhaps it's shaped strangely, I'm not sure. This is the first time we've ever replaced a toilet seat, so had no idea they could be so different.
I'm not exaggerating when I say I'd be happy paying $500 for a toilet seat if I can get one that's as comfortable as a regular chair, where I don't feel the need to constantly shift around because my butt/legs are getting sore.
Don't care about any fancy stuff like buttons and lights and bidets, just want something really, really comfortable to sit on. Also don't want to get an entirely new toilet, because the one we have is great, just want a new seat.
So, what is the "Ferrari of toilet seats"? Is there any such thing? Or are they all basically the same and it just takes awhile to get used to a new one?
Those padded ones back in the 90s were pretty awesome.
My parents still use them! Drives me crazy, but they love them
Why...why can't you just keep reading the book off the toilet?
I can't remember where I read it, but sitting on the toilet for long periods is really bad for you and can lead to hemorrhoids. Just finish your business and get out. Or put a chair in the bathroom if you like hanging out there.
Shitting in my desk chair is causing real problems.
Why don't you just sit on the toilet in reverse so you can have a nice little desk space for your book?
When I was a kid I thought it was a shelf for my chocolate milk and face backwards.
Oh the AC Slater
And that subtle peeling-tape sound when you stood up was always nice too.
Please listen to this!
You will regret sitting on a toilet for 30 minutes.
Glad I saw this thread 28 minutes in… I’ll be right back……..
It's not healthy at all to sit on toilet seats for an extended time
I've been in the bathroom for THREE GODFORSAKEN HOURS, I'm probably not going to be able to walk when I stand for a couple minutes.
During this latest visit, I have come to realize I have a horribly cheap toilet seat, and with as much time as I spend in here, it's time for some comfort.
I come to you, oh wise ones, to please share with me your favorite toilet seats.
Some of us on here surely have to have a nice set-up.
Idk but i dream of the day i can afford a japanese digital toilet
I would like that too
Dude, right? I've seen ones that have lights and sing.
But I've replaced dozens. Quit pivoting with the whole ass body. Seriously. If they don't snap a plastic hinge, they break the seat itself. I'd go with a plastic seat but all their hinges are also plastic.
Idc about my time and labor - it's nothing. But I'm still shocked by how frequently this happens. How often are yall replacing toilet seats?
I had a male resident who had a loose toilet seat. One night as he was running in to handle urgent business, he sat down quickly and hard, breaking the seat bolts. The seat slid off the side of the bowl and pinched this man's balls against the porcelain. I can't imagine the pain.
Years ago, I worked at Lowes in the evening, for some extra money. One day, I had a kid (employee) wander down to me, with an elderly customer…
Kid has this weird look on his face, and asks me if I have ever heard of tall toilet seats. I was somewhat confused, but then the old guy says:
“When I sit down on the toilet, my balls sag down into the cold water! Then my ass tightens up and I can’t shit! Don’t they make tall toilet seats to stop that?”
I tried not to laugh but say, “Yes, they absolutely do make those! But you need to go over to Walgreens, or a medical supply store. If you talk to your doctor, he/she might give you a prescription so your insurance covers it.”
Happened to me a few weeks back but worse, had swamp ass from moving furniture 3 flights up back and fourth, went to the shitter and sat down, needed to adjust but the seat stuck my ass like glue, moved forward at the same time so my balls went forward and sat on my balls under the seat itself. Never thought id ever cup my balls and shit at the same time. Happens to the best of us.
My ex was close to 400lbs and would flop when she sat down. Never broke the seat, but went through a ton of seat bolts. She also killed office chairs every 2 months or so.
We have some things which are nearing 50 years old and for 50 years they’ve put up with some crazy abuse. One day someone finds a way to still break something in ways I could not imagine.
I worked in broadcast engineering before making the move to maintenance. My team was fond of saying that news could manage to break an anvil. Some people just have a natural talent for unnatural levels of destruction.
Toilet seats, ceiling fan pull chain switches, and window blinds. Ive used them for decades and I don't think I've ever broken a single one. Somehow I am replacing these every week.
I’m a 37 year old dude, never once clogged a toilet in my life. Blows my mind this is such a prevalent problem. I lived alone in an apartment for 4 years, didn’t even own a plunger.
I call um wiggle poopers.
Had a property that got a fair amount of foreigners; I guess they were used to floor toilets and would stand on the seats and squat. Shoe prints and broken toilet seats….
Yeah that’s another one… I used to run into that a lot in manufacturing facilities. You’d even see bare feet prints on the seat.
Thats why they wash their feet in the sink...
Our powder room toilet is about 20 years old and keeps getting clogged. It’s also the main toilet myself, husband, and 2 kids use the most throughout the day.
My plumber recommended replacing it with a new one.
I want to be prepared about the fact that I have a husband who enjoys eating and a son who is already a big kid at 5 yrs old and will likely grow to be a large man as he ages.
So I’m looking for a toilet that can withstand years of abuse and can flush with some power 😅
I don’t know how to search for that though. Anyone know?
Just had to replace one at my house. My plumber recommended Kohler or Toto, but he preferred Toto. So that’s what I got. Never heard of them before, but it’s obviously a much better quality toilet than the one it replaced.
Toto is very good. Japan made. We have three. Replaced all in our house.
Post this question to r/askaplumber Their answer will be TOTO brand toilets hands down.
Indeed the difference between a $150 no name Home Depot brand vs $500 ToTo is night and day. Ordered from Costco delivered. Easy to install yourself. Will last another 20 years
You're thinking of the American Standard Champion Four. I recently bought one. It's an excellent toilet.
We went with Toto in our upstairs bath Reno and we absolutely love it. Except if you aren’t prepared it’s loud. But it’s fast and easy to clean. We do handheld bidet systems not seats.
Starting our downstairs bathroom Reno this year and will be going with another Toto.
My plumber highly recommended Toto as the top of the line for toilets. He had nothing good to say about Kohler. Apparently the innards are proprietary and hard to replace.
I went with American Standard because it's a guest bath and I honestly didn't care. It's a fine toilet. Flushes and everything.
100% get a Toto.
Our current toilet is a Kohler so I was thinking about replacing it w that
Is it a powerful flush??
1960s homes with lead sewer pipes periodically need a major cleaning. Check with a plumber.
Otherwise, go pickup any $200-400 from Home Depot and install it. The condition of the flange is always a challenge. And I like the new $10 wax rings from Danco that are encased in rubber. Really outstanding engineering. It’s pretty easy to do it yourself in a couple of hours. It’s pretty dirty cleanup work at the beginning. You’ll figure that out. Worth a good cleanup job. Plumber won’t do it. Just cover it up and the bathroom will smell.
Oh? Avoid store brand toilets. Go name brand. Kohler, American standard. Whatever. Long nose, short round. Slow drop seat is premium, I prefer to buy a wood one aftermarket. Nothings too good for my ass.
I am thinking about buying the American Standard Champion 4 toilet. The toilets at our house clog frequently.
That's normal with any modern 1+ gallon flush toilet, assuming your old toilet is a 3+ gallon toilet. If you want to save slightly more water, you can go with a dual flush model that has one flush setting for pee and a more powerful/more water use one for poo. Unfortunately, most of the dual flushers are good flushers but not great ones.
Honestly, I wouldn't mess around with a Toto or Kohler. Some Totos flush decently but are hard to repair when parts fail. 2 specifics: It's hard to find the correct replacement 3" flappers for some models, and the side mount handles tend to fail fairly quickly because they aren't engineered well. Kohlers are more expensive for the same quality and performance, often slightly harder to assemble, and sometimes use non-standard parts. The only reason to buy a Kohler is if you like the styling - Kohler makes some unique looking potties.
I've used the Glacier Bay Power Flush https://www.homedepot.com/p/Glacier-Bay-Power-Flush-12-inch-Rough-In-Two-Piece-1-28-GPF-Single-Flush-Elongated-Toilet-in-White-Seat-Included-N2450E/308702440 in several applications where users' massive loaves were clogging their existing toilets, even some decent quality newer toilets. No complaints yet. Decent plastic slow close seat, no reason to buy an upgrade. I use the elongated chair height ones, but available in round if you can't fit an elongated, and in extra tall if you need it.
BTW, don't mess around with a wooden seat either. Eventually the paint chips off and they get rotten. And the wood technology makes for a flatter, less comfortable seat because they don't curve down below the plane of the bowl top.
I have been researching and researching electric bidets. First tried the cheaper bidet attachment style and it was a nightmare to install, returned and now trying to find an electric bidet that lasts longer than its warranty period. I notice on most every single review for electric bidet seats, there are always quite a few that say that they break down coincidentally right after their warranty period ends.
Obviously if companies make their products too well they will run out of business as no one will need to buy them again, but if I am paying for something in the price range of $350-400 I expect it to last at least 10 years.
I also noticed many reviewers say “the older model of this brand lasted me 5-10 years,” but none of them say which model and I’m honestly not even sure there is a model that lasts more than two years that is still being made.
Toto seems like the most reputable brand, but I can only afford the ones off of Amazon and not their site, so a little unsure about quality.
I would greatly appreciate any recommendations for electric bidet seats that LAST.
(Also, the Toto SW3023#01 washlet KC2 on Amazon is the one I am currently thinking I might get—if anyone has experience using this one I would love to hear about it!)
Yeah, definitely stick with Toto and the washlet you listed is good, but I think this one is the best.
I have a Brondell Swash 1000 and it has to be about 8 years old, maybe 10
And it is still working as it did when new
I’ve been researching and brondell seems like a great quality brand—I’m rethinking my Toto choice now lol. Thank you so much for the comment!
If you are a Costco member, good idea to see if you can find out if they are having an upcoming sale. They do a bidet seat a few times a year, that’s how I stumbled on mine, and it’s sometimes a great sale like half what others retailers sell for.
Costco carries the Toto bidet below for $360 but it's for elongated not round toilets. I see you mentioned you have a round toilet in another comment. Costco has unlimited length return policy for bidets so it's the best place to buy from if you can find one you like. Their selection is weak though they only carry the one Toto bidet.
I've done tons of research on bidets, I was really looking at getting a Biobidet BB2000 but the customer service has gone downhill in recent years. I ended up settling on a Toto K300 electronic bidet. Toto doesn't warranty their bidets long only 1 year so that was concerning but they have high quality items. Installed my K300 2 weeks ago or so and has worked great. Just buy an extended warranty or purchase it on a credit card that gives you an extended warranty on any items bought if you have that card benefit. Homedepot.com has a good selection of bidets and they will price match to Amazon/other sites. Benefit of homedpeot is 90 day return policy so easy return if need be instead of shipping it back to some online retailer. You can also buy extended warranty through homedepot for any bidet.
I have an older (68 years old) disabled aunt and she needed something very easy to use so I got her the Biobidet 1000 through homedepot for $305. Had them pricematch it to Amazon. If it has any issues back to homedepot it goes and got extended warranty as well. Needed something that could handle her heavy weight and big buttons with English words on it not icons with a dumb LCD screen like the BB2000 remote.
That's really helpful information, thank you!! If you are not a Costco member can you still return a bidet though? I am looking at the Brondell Swash CL1500 toilet seat.
I have two Brondell bidets which have broken multiple times each and my parents have Toto bidets they bought before me and they have never needed repairs. My next bidet will be Toto
I have the BioBidet and love it. Costco also sells them. I’m actually looking to sell mine (less than a year old) because I’m moving and the toilet in my new apartment is round, and my current toilet (and bidet) is oblong. Here’s the site for the model: https://biobidet.com/collections/bidet-seats/products/slim-3
My toilet is unfortunately round as well so I doubt that would fit on mine, but best of luck selling it--looks like a great model!
I would never buy a used bidet. That feels like getting 2nd hand underwear. Lol
Brondell Bidet toilet seatskick butt compared to others out there! They are expensive but worth the extra $$ for something you will use everyday.
With customizable settings for water temperature, pressure, and nozzle position, it's like getting a personalized spa treatment every time you use it for your butt. Plus, they've got cool features like oscillating and pulsating modes for a thorough clean. And don't forget the heated seat, warm air dryer, and deodorizer. We got one and loved it so much that we bought 3 more for every bathroom in the home.
Sometimes my boyfriend sits on the toilet for 45 minutes looking at his phone and then he says his legs fall asleep. There’s no getting him out of there any sooner so I wonder if there’s a toilet seat that’s actually comfortable to sit on for that long.
Thanks!
I had the same problem, the issue is probably less the toilet seat than the height of the toilet. New toilets are "comfort height" which places them higher up and makes it a lot easier to sit on them without your legs falling asleep. This is also really important for disabled people, so you'll see these toilets labeled as "ADA height" or something like that. You can buy a cushioned seat for your current toilet, but this probably won't make much of a difference on its own. If you're going to upgrade your toilet, one with an elongated bowl is also huge improvement for men in the house as well.
If you are looking for a new toilet, check out the American Standard Champion 4 Max for its amazing flush performance and bowl cleaning. If you need to save money, the Glacier Bay N2428E from Home Depot works well for under $100. You might also check out the Niagara Stealth and Niagara Stealth Nano ultra-low-flow dual-flush toilets, they are inexpensive and work well with amazingly low water usage, but their smaller water spots might cause more odors during use than toilets that use more water, and their internal mechanisms are much more complicated. Rebates from your water/sewer company may apply for any of these toilets as they are all WaterSense certified.
Thanks!
In addition to "comfort height" bowls mentioned above, you can also get padded toilet seats too.
Your boyfriend is beating his meat
But he could be beating his meat on a luxury toilet seat.
most durable toilet seat brands
Key Considerations for Durable Toilet Seat Brands:
Material: Look for seats made from high-quality materials such as solid wood, molded wood, or high-density plastic. These materials tend to be more durable and resistant to cracking.
Hinge Quality: Durable toilet seats often feature robust hinges made from stainless steel or heavy-duty plastic, which can withstand frequent use without breaking.
Weight Capacity: Check the weight capacity of the toilet seat. Heavier seats generally indicate sturdier construction.
Finish and Coating: A good finish can enhance durability. Look for seats with a scratch-resistant or anti-bacterial coating to maintain hygiene and appearance over time.
Warranty: Brands that offer a longer warranty period often stand behind the durability of their products.
Recommended Brands:
Kohler: Known for their high-quality materials and innovative designs, Kohler toilet seats are durable and come with a variety of features.
American Standard: Offers a range of sturdy toilet seats with solid construction and reliable hinges, often at a reasonable price.
