Hip Hop and Urban Styles
Hip hop continues to be a major influence on dance innovation, with many dancers incorporating elements from hip hop into their routines. This style is known for its versatility and ability to blend with other genres, making it suitable for public performances and emotional expression [1:1],
[2:2]. Urban styles like house, tutting, popping, and locking are also gaining popularity due to their unique movements and the cultural impact they have on modern choreography
[3:1],
[5:3].
Contemporary Dance
Contemporary dance remains a popular choice for those looking to express emotions through movement. It allows for freedom of expression and often incorporates elements from various dance styles, including jazz and modern dance [1],
[4:2]. Contemporary dance is characterized by big movements, jumps, and an emphasis on storytelling through dance
[4:2].
Fusion and Choreography-Based Styles
Many dancers are exploring fusion styles that combine elements from different genres to create innovative choreography. These styles are often defined by the choreographer's unique vision and can include influences from hip hop, jazz, modern contemporary, and even ballroom or vogue styles [2:1],
[4:3]. The blending of these styles allows dancers to explore new movements and expand their creative boundaries.
Traditional and Cultural Dance Influences
Traditional dance forms such as Ceilidh, Blues, and Japanese dance continue to inspire dancers by offering unique perspectives on movement and cultural expression. These styles teach important skills such as partner dancing, improvisation, and connecting with music and rhythm [3:3],
[3:4]. Belly dancing is another style that has gained attention for its focus on self-acceptance and confidence building
[3:7].
Innovative Dance Experiences
Dancers are increasingly seeking transformative experiences through dance, exploring styles that challenge them and change their relationship with movement. House dance, rave combined with ballet, and traditional Japanese dance are examples of styles that have provided breakthrough moments for dancers, helping them connect more deeply with themselves and their culture [3:1],
[3:4].
Hi! I am joining a dance class near me, i have never done any dance except bharatanatyam
I have 3 options hip hop, jazz and contemporary/lyrical (it's combined into one class in the studio i am joining)
I want it to be versatile so i can dance in public to most songs (and more emotional songs because i dance as an outlet for my emotions), and i can only learn 1 dance style. I also want to work on improving my flexibility, and be able to do cool dance tricks and just low-key dancing
So what do you guys recommend?

I’ve been dancing ballet for 14 years and tap and irish during those times as well but Im now done with those because I’m going to Portland Oregon for college!
I’ve always wanted to do this type of dancing but not sure what it’s called exactly. Could someone help me figure the name out?
I’d say hip hop mixed with modern contemporary Just an uneducated guess.

The music is Afro Pop.
But they aren’t doing Afro.
Although it may have some hip hop and more commercial moves, it’s just Choreography but the style is defined by the choreographer and what he mixes (dance genres) in the choreo.
I know that we always want to label things, but most of these dances are dance variations and combinations so, the teachers only put their names on the flyer because they have their own style but isn’t that organized to make it a dance style or genre itself.
I'm curious about transformative dance experiences. What style challenged you, opened your mind, or gave you a breakthrough moment? How did it change your relationship with movement and self-expression?
Combining rave and ballet with a touch of hip hop.
Ceilidh: my gateway style. Taught me motion and the joy of movement and how to be silly and competent together
Blues: taught me partner dance skills: how to lead, how to follow, how to connect with a partner via anything from a 1 hand contact to fully body close embrace. How to improvise
Balfolk, my true dance love: taught me how to connect in massive groups or tiny partner dances. How to become one with a rythm. How to fly on music. How to embody tiny differences in cultural styles. A huge amount of musicality (11/4 waltzes :D)
If the only form of dance, I do but… Traditional Japanese Because the movement isn’t just about beauty it’s about perfecting the movement and the Strict a discipline of the art and I think it’s something borderline spiritual about it. That makes me feel connected with my culture.
House Dance. When you research about the history you understand the impact of this dance genre in modern and street dances / culture.
Absolutely. It's one of the most underrated dance styles. I love the emphasis on free movement and vibing together.
And yet it has such big impact in Choreography creating nowadays.
Belly dancing. taught me about self-acceptance. Gained a lot more self confidence and self esteem from it.
Could anyone please tell me the genre of dance style that they use in all of their music videos? I want more than anything to be able to take classes to be able to dance in this style, but I'm not sure what it's actually called or even in general. Could anyone help me out?
Thanks!
Pretty sure it's just contemporary, with all the jumps and big movements, but it's got inspo from them all.
I think the thing that ties it together for them is that each of their dancers is tellably good at one, and then expanded that.
Much like musicians finding their voice.
Just start with one, any, that you enjoy, run w it from there.
No point doing it JUST to learn the one imo
Many of the videos have choreography that is based in hip hop. Some of them feature jazz elements and even ballroom(vogue) ish styles.
i think theres a little bit of breakdance in there too
I found this coreographers react a great way to at least know of the different styles 😁 she does reac to the whole album so it is a longer video. But she talks about the different styles in each one or where they originate from :)
I would agree! Hip Hop, Jazz...and definitely Michael Jackson inspired!
For me, it is probably jazz and contemporary. Jazz because of the athleticism, jumping, turning, and usage of flexibility, and contemporary for the freedom of movement and emphasis on expression. How about you?
Irish dance! I've been doing it for a couple years and it's so vastly different in so many ways, but it's a ton of fun!
I love urban styles—house, tutting, popping and locking—its really a different language than ballet, but its so fun. Plus, in all honesty, I love hip hop music more than I Iike classical.
I love jazz too - its just so much fun!
Let's do da spinny spin.
Tap! I am not very good, but I love that it is almost more a mental exercise then a physical exercise. Both are almost meditative for me, but in different ways.
Modern. I did the Paul Taylor intensive one summer during college, and that was a blast!
At the moment, I am trying to come up with a list of the best dance styles to use for dance reels and was hoping to get some outside perspective from other dancers!
I feel like I am a bit biased of what styles I prefer or enjoy dancing more, but at the same time, I know that my personal preference may not help me get jobs or show off my full dance range. So what are some styles you would recommend putting in a reel?
I'm thinking ballet is a no brainer and I'll def include that in my reel, but I'm also thinking of adding two types of jazz (like fosse jazz with heels and then a more comp style jazz), modern/contemporary, lyrical, tap, hip hop, and musical theater. Anything else I'm forgetting?
I don't have any dance friends that are available or willing to do partner work stuff, but maybe I could also learn some basic solo ballroom moves?
What about including West Coast Swing? https://youtu.be/x1nfhBxCdZY
I'll have to check it out! Looks super cool!
What are you using these dance reels for? Is this for a portfolio or application for a company/school or are we talking about making social media reels? These are ENTIRELY different criteria and greatly affect what we could suggest.
If this is for a professional situation like a job/school/company then you're far better off demonstrating the QUALITY of your dance, not dabbling in dances you don't actually have experience in. A teacher/instructor/director will easily spot an amateur or advanced dancer based on little movements you do, so 30s of dancing ballet (if you've never taken lessons in) would actually hurt your chances quite badly, compared to 30 seconds of whatever your primary styles are.
Reviewers will be interested in your musicality, the quality of your movements (not your dance style), connection, fundamentals, balance, choreography, and improvisation. What is less important than HOW.
If we're just talking reels for social media, I would much rather watch a person dancing in a style they're awesome at, than something they've practiced for a few days.
Thank you so much for your response! This is all so amazing and informative! :)
At the moment, my goal is to have a variety of dance videos to post on my website and submit for jobs (like to show them my dance ability and range and stuff). These reels will mostly be used for job auditions and portfolios, but I may also post a few on my socials depending on how they turn out.
So since this is a professional portfolio, you need to be SELECTIVE about what you show. Again, I would strongly be against dabbling in dances that you're untrained/inexperienced with. You might think "ballet is awesome, let do some moves to show off" but a teacher would look at it and think "this is the worst pirroette I've ever seen!".
Here's some thoughts on what you should demonstrate
Something that might help is watch some "So You Think You Can Dance" auditions and listen to the judges on the things they notice and talk about.
You should have a variety of styles for your dance reel to show versatility. You should also have a couple of versions for different kinds of jobs like a high energy one for commercial jobs and one that shows more artistry for concert dance jobs.
Ultimately, it depends on what you’re auditioning for.
Thats what I'm thinking as well! :)
I think my plan is to record videos of each dance separately and then depending on the audition or gig, I'd pick whatever dances best suit the vibe I'm going for and then edit those into a reel

Hi! Dancing is probably my weakest point compared to singing and acting. What category of dance is important for theatre?
I’ve seen most (?) actors hone their dance skills with contemporary, but I feel like it’s too professional for me. Also, I’m gonna assume that other dance categories have its own advantages than others…
I think JAZZ is a good place to start for basics
Musical Theatre Jazz and Commercial Dance.
Edit to add: Ballet as a foundation for jazz technique too!
It could be style that they do on the current seasons or a style that they did in the older seasons.
Jive. I love the idea of making it look like you’re skipping on air
Same as well as polka. Both dances if done properly, makes it seem like your flying in the dance floor.
Cha cha I feel like it would be best for social situations and easier to learn than the others!
Cha Cha is easy but not as easy as Salsa
I also choose Cha Cha for the same reasons!
I want to dance a Quickstep so badly.
I just want to dance a sick ass Argentine tango at least once before I die
Argentine Tango or Contemporary. The story telling aspect is just cool.
[deleted]
Salsa
Mine is definitely Broadway…
It is very rare to see a Lindy hop
They've done Lindy Hop I'm pretty sure... Way back in the day. They also did Bollywood a few times
Yeah, and I remember and loved it. That’s why I said it’s rare. I’ve watched every season since the beginning!
Bachata
Yes!! Especially Pasha and Daniella
This is THE answer omg
Jitterbug
They did jitterbug back in the day .
Tap
West Coast Swing, I’d say other styles but I don’t need the pros butchering styles the way they do jazz and contemporary no offense 😭
