Understanding Height Measurements
A common point of confusion is the measurement system used for height restrictions. At Six Flags, heights are typically measured in inches rather than feet and inches. For example, a ride might have a minimum height requirement of 54 inches, which is equivalent to 4 feet 6 inches, not 5 feet 4 inches [1:1]. This distinction is important for ensuring eligibility for rides.
Minimum Height Requirements
Many rides at Six Flags have specific minimum height requirements to ensure safety. For instance, the Demon at Six Flags Great America has increased its requirement from 42 inches to 48 inches [2:2]. Similarly, Shake Rattle and Roll requires riders to be 42 inches tall if accompanied by an adult, or 54 inches alone
[5:1]
[5:4].
Maximum Height Limits
Some rides also impose maximum height limits, which can affect taller guests. For example, Six Flags America has a maximum height limit of 76 inches (6'4") for many rides [3]. In contrast, Xflight at Six Flags Great America has a posted max height of 78 inches
[4:2]. These restrictions are often due to safety concerns related to fitting within the ride's restraints.
Ride Accessibility and Comfort
Height restrictions can impact both accessibility and comfort on rides. Taller individuals may find it challenging to fit comfortably on certain rides, as seen with issues faced by riders over 6'4" [3:4]. It's advisable for very tall riders, like those over 6'11", to check the ADA guide available on each park's website for detailed restrictions
[4:5].
General Tips for Visiting Six Flags
When planning a visit to Six Flags, it's beneficial to download their app, which provides information on ride restrictions and other useful details [4:2]. Additionally, bringing snacks and drinks can help manage costs, as food and beverages within the park can be expensive
[1:1]. It's also recommended to wear clothes with secure pockets to prevent losing items during rides.
Edit: This Aussie has no idea about measurements in America lol.
Hey y'all,
So I took advantage of the recent special Six flags had for the buy a gold membership with a free upgrade to platinum for my wife's birthday. She loves rollercoasters and figured it would be a great gift as she really wants to go for her birthday.
Today I look up some of the rides and notice the minimum height needed to ride some of the more intense rides are 5'4". While that isn't an issue for me, my wife is below 5'4".
She's been on rides at six flags over georgia, busch gardens, universal etc. and never had an issue. Now I'm concerned that we'll turn up and she won't be able to go on any of the fun rides, like The Green lantern, Batman, Bizarro, etc. At this rate the only coaster she'll be able to go on is the Joker.
Can anyone shed some light on this or if you yourself have any experience with being under 5'4" and going on the coasters, I'd really appreciate it :)
Thanks all and have a great day!
I'm a tall guy (6'5) and I couldn't ride Cyborg lol
Oh wow! was that due to the height restriction or it was too much?
I just read the sign and didn’t feel like risking it although I know I’ve ridden other rides with similar height restrictions and have lived to tell the tale lol
Worst ride in the park. “Ohh! I’m upside down for 6 seconds. How terrifying.”
It’s slow & stupid. We went yesterday & there was no line. We walked right by it into Justice League. That was fun but not thrilling.
What are your favorites to ride?
You’re misreading it.
It’s fifty-four inches, not five-foot-four.
5’4” is 64”. As long as she’s 4’5 ”, you’re good.
My little kids ride all the rides. They’re all shorter than 5’4”.
Have fun. Take any knife type keychains off your key ring. Have as little as possible in your pockets. Try to wear clothes with zippered or buttoned pockets. Bring a snack. Pack a cooler & extra drinks for the ride home. The most expensive part of the day is food & drink. I spent $14 on the worst sausage sandwich I’ve ever had just yesterday.
Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. That makes way more sense! lol. I'm an Aussie living in the states, hence the confusion. Thank you so much for clarifying! :)
This was wild! I rode this back when I was 4 (I am 42 now) and my 5 year old rode it last year. Thankfully, he just made the 48inch marker because he would have been so disappointed! I noticed that Cedar Fair had higher height restrictions than Six Flags for the same rides (raging rapids like ride). I thought it was an IL vs OH thing but maybe it is the difference between the companies.
Corporations are so hilarious... ride was fine for how many years at a lower height? These type of nonsense policies don't protect young children. Ride injuries happen because you don't spend enough money to maintain the rides... just look at Top Thrill or nearly every accident ever....
It's probably an insurance thing
Of course, but it's moronic... I'm saying our corporations are ran by morons.
Oh man WTF. Not even if accompanied by an adult? This is going to be so disappointing for my (short) kid.
It’s a strict 48in minimum
I guess I'll hold out some hope that 6F doesn't actually update the measuring equipment on the ride.
Not every single height requirement change needs its own post in multiple subs. Just compile them, man.
I tried and for some reason it didn’t let me post multiple pictures… otherwise I would
4 feet is tiny tho. They basically stopped letting 5 year olds on the ride lol. If you’re a little person, no offense.
Literally the first five rides were almost impossible for me to get into and pull down the shoulder restraint as I'm just barely over 6'4" and long in the torso (only wear 32" inseam jeans). I forced myself into the Roar wooden coaster and it was horrible trying to push back on the bar the whole time to prevent my knees from smashing into the metal framing constantly. Only the Batwing was a fun one that worked for me allowing riders under 78" inches.
Has it always been like this? Maybe I got spoiled living in central Florida where the rides aren't so claustrophobic (Magic Kingdom, Universal, MGM, etc).
Six Flags New England has a 6'2" limit on most of the rides.
Are people shorter the further north you go or something? Florida: no height issues (I can recall), Virgina/MD: 6' 4" limits for most rides, New England: 6' 2".... Hmmmm.
Well I can say with near certainty New England has the shortest people on average (even the usually 'taller' white people). Any other part of the US I've been to with a 'short' population has been primarily due to a sizeable Asian and/or Hispanic population. So by your logic, technically yes?
I was able to get on almost every ride at magic mountain. Not comfortably, but I got on.
I had that problem at the one in Sandusky Ohio several years ago. So fun to wait in like for 2 hours to be turned away
Yeah, when I went into the line at Batwing the pole that was supposed to show the height was clearly missing/broken and I had to look it up online to be sure I wasn't about to wait for an hour for no reason. But I wouldn't have thought to be so cautious if I had not just been rejected from five previous rides.
I have still enjoyed seeing my kids have fun.
Europe, hardly ever had an issue with my 2 metres
My boyfriend and I are considering going to either St. Louis or Gurnee Six Flags in the next year but I’m wondering if all rides have a maximum height posted?
My boyfriend is 6’11” and 200 lbs and trying to figure out if he could even rides any rides in the first place.
Tyia!
Xflight in Gurnee has a posted max height of 78 inches. If you download the six flags app, there is an ADA pdf that lists out restrictions for each ride
St. Louis used to be my home park. So this is coming from an attendee (with a good friend that is 6’5”), not a park employee. I just went through the rides list, and I don’t think there’s anything he would be excluded from because of his height. HOWEVER, I don’t know how many things he will be able to fit with the length of his legs. Some rides he’ll be folded up so tightly it would not be comfortable to ride.
Absolutely would not try: River King Mine Train, Screamin’ Eagle
Mayyyyyybe: American Thunder, Boomerang, Fireball, Mr. Freeze, Ninja, Pandemonium, Boss, Xcalibur
I’d try: Batman, Colossus, Justice League, Log Flume, Super Girl Sky Flyer, Shazam, Skyscreamer, Spinsanity, Joker, Thunder River
No idea: Catwoman whip
Thank you so much!! This is really helpful because I’m trying to see if there would anything for him to do there. I appreciate the help!
You’re most welcome! I would want someone for me to do the same. ☺️
The employee above echoed my absolutely no’s. He really won’t be missing much by not doing those.
The mayyyyyybes are all a majority of the big attraction coasters. My 6’5” friend would ride American Thunder with his kid, but his knees always hurt afterwards. I think the same for Boomerang. So it will really be a matter of comfort for him.
I do think there is enough other stuff to do that would make it an enjoyable day for him, so long as he has the mindset knowing that a lot of the big coasters will be uncomfortable and he may end up just having to do the other types of rides. If he’ll be upset and not be able to handle that, then stay home. But if he is a good sport and will be able to roll with it, I think you all will have a fantastic time!!!
Former SFSL employee here. Most of the rides he will be able to ride. I would steer clear from Screamin Eagle unfortunately as the PRC trains are quite small. Same with mine train. Most other coasters should be fine. American Thunder and Boss may be a tight fight but from my experience with one of my friends (also former employee) who is massively tall he was able to fit in almost all the rides
thank you so much for the info! So no issues with low clearances on rides? That’s my biggest fear lol
The only ride I can think of is American Thunder. There’s two “head chopper” effects. My buddy who I rode with was fine but he’s around 6’8
Yes, none of the rides at SFSL have a low clearance that I can think of.
Each park has an ADA guide on their website that will include any max heights for rides
He will not be able to ride Flash: Vertical Velocity at the Gurnee park.
No way he fits on American Eagle at Great America. I'm 5'8" and my knees touch the front of the car.
I’m 6’1’and never had this issue
My fav ride and I have always felt the height should be higher when you can't even see the heads of riders it's concerning.
I wonder if the same will happen to triple play at Great America since it’s the same ride?
Based on the app, it has the same height requirement as this now
This actually makes sense. The restraint is extremely easy to slide out of. That’s the whole point of having an older rider accompany smaller ones. It’s all about preventing small kids getting hurt from purposely trying to wriggle out.
Completely unnecessary. Each vehicle has a seat belt and a lap bar restraint
Ikr
What was it before?
50 alone, 42 accompanied
Anyone know what rides I will have a problem fitting in I'm 230 pounds 6'1 so I can be aware
You should be fine for all the big rides I’m 6’2 250 and only really get squished when I take my daughter on some of the kiddie rides
would help if you said what park but i'm similar size, a bit shorter and heavier and honestly there are almost no adult rides at least here in CA that i can't get on so you should get on most anything.
Oh sorry I'm going to great america
You'll be fine. I'm about 6ft and 275 lbs, and I fit on everything. Sometimes I need a little push on the restraint to get the last click. At 265 I really fit on everything.
You might have an issue on Viper and American Eagle. They have a divider in the middle of the seats on both of those rides. My hips are 46" and while I do fit, it's a bit snug. My bf has a large back, so us sitting next to each other on those rides is kinda awkward sometimes. Lol Anything else should be fine.
What do you mean? My 7 year old was able to ride it. 42” isn’t a “big height requirement”
I took it more as "why isn't this the same as a kiddie ride" more than "why do you have to be 6'4" to ride MIB"
Same and he loved it!
The carts spin. Don't need a toddler or smaller child being flung out of the carriage.
I mean… I wouldn’t mind seeing it once
Yeah, and then you get evaced off the ride and see everything with the lights on!
A necessary sacrifice.
And then it's just drama and paperwork...
It'll be because the cars spin
The spinning
It's right in the middle. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Exactly around 34
It’s a shame they have to do things like this because some moronic 16-year-old got on the ride one day and probably didn’t fit correctly, ended up injuring himself. So now they have to put up a stupid sign with a height range.
As the subject says, I'm heading to Disney World with my partner next month (his first time, my third). Obviously height minimums are a thing on many rides, but I was wondering if anyone knows if there are any maximums, either officially or just from personal experience?
He's not big on more intense rides so we'll probably be skipping the Rockin Roller Coaster and Tower of Terror, but other than that we're wanting to get in as many rides as possible.
He's aware that leg room won't be great in many places since that's kind of a struggle on the daily anyway, but it's more the overhead height I'm worried about. I was thinking about how close some parts of some coasters feel like they are to your head and it just got me thinking.
Any tips and suggestions appreciated, TIA!
6ft5 350lbs, here right now and have been on almost everything. Here are my do's and don'ts.
Tiana's - he will likely have to either cross his legs or failing that take a row to himself. I'm tall but also big but still managed to get on a row with my partner. He'll notice that when he sits in it his upper leg from his butt to his knee simply won't fit straight so will need to do some maneuvering.
Space Mountain - i honestly would avoid this one at 6ft8. Even if you ask for legroom they'll give you a row to go in but it's honestly so tight and really uncomfortable. I managed but at 3 inches more I don't think it'll be easy to do or even possible.
Tron - Nightmare. I have huge knees so I couldn't even slide into it but another note - My knee to the bottom of my foot was too long for the ride, meaning that my feet would have been dangling off the edge. I did ride the accessible seats and they should be fine for him though.
I didn't try Avatar flight as I took one look at the test seat and thought not a chance. May be worth him having a go? The other Avatar one is fine though just a boat ride.
Aerosmith - I asked for legroom and he held me and my partner to the side and said row 1. There is LOADS of room in the front but the only problem is my missus almost lost her voice screaming!
7 Dwarves - really tight, I managed. I'm a big boy so bear that in mind but legroom wasn't a massive problem it's just a tight ride.
Everest has loads of room, guardians, loads of room. All the boat rides and rail rides like haunted mansion, Nemo, little mermaid etc are all fine, he will just need to cross his legs to physically sit or for the bar to come down. In any case if you're a large guest and you are a party of 2 you generally get a row to yourself always.
Honestly, I was so scared and anxious before going but it's been so good and they are so accommodating. Plus there's very little he won't be able to do.
Just been to universal the past two days and it's a whole different story. I fit on nothing other than the 4D rides lol.
My very tall dad did not enjoy space mountain.
look, i'm 5'4" and i still feel like space mountain is gonna chop my head off
I'm only 6' 3" and space mountain sorta sucks as I enter my 40's. Hard to get in, hard to get out, no space for my legs
I'm 6' and in my 20's, and have the same issues, maybe it's just how badly I've messed up my body, but deff not a great ride if you're taller.
6’10” here. No space mountain. Everything else is just a “try and see if you fit”. Go in with a good attitude and you’ll be fine.
This is a good response. Space Mountain is the only one I would say absolutely flat out avoid. I wouldn’t avoid Flight of Passage or Tron though. I’m very tall and had no problems on those and they are great rides. Expedition Everest might be a little snug from memory, but he’ll be fine. Incidentally, Rip Ride Rockit at Universal was the only ride I remember having a maximum height limit. But that’s closing soon anyway.
I'm 6'5 265 pounds a little fluffy around the middle
Flight of passage I can barely squeeze into. I've ridden three times all together and finally figured i how to get in the seat. One time they almost didn't let me ride. you have to get your knees in just right to get it to close l
The Goofy roller coaster is a no go.
Tron I have no problem with the seats. There is one out front you can test.
Teacups are a little tough
Most of the boats are fine as long as they don't try to squeeze too many people in a row
Exact same height here - cross those ankles every single chance you get! Only hard no I’ve ever run into was Astro Orbiter. Mine Train is a squeeze but totally doable, and a nice smooth ride once you’re in there. On the omnimovers like Haunted Mansion, Little Mermaid, the ankle cross is essential and he’ll have to really spread those knees so please excuse his temporary manspread. Tea Cups can be a little bit of an operation, just let him get in first it’s the easier way. Other than that I’ve never had a problem, anything like Pirates, Pooh etc where there is no restraint or lap bar is totally comfortable.
Space mountain will be super cramped. Watch your knees too on Haunted Mansion when the ghost host lowers the bar on the doom buggy.
Oh finally something I can chime in on! I’m 6’9” and have ridden/avoided almost every ride in Disney now.
Any boat rides are a rough fit. Think Small World, Na’Vi and those types. Basically have to fully manspread to even attempt fitting.
The cycle type rides are an avoid for me. Flight of Passage and Tron. Tron has an ADA friendly back seat on some cars so I always ask the cast member for that as I know there’s no physical way I’d fit on the bikes. It doesn’t take away from the experience to ride in the car!
Another commenter said Space Mountain is rough and I can vouch. My last ride was my last ride, I had bruises on my thighs from the restraint. Test Tracks back seats were not good either, highly recommend asking for front row and the middle for your big guy.
Otherwise, most rides at Disney are very space friendly. All the new trackless rides are roomy, most coasters have great space, heck I even fit in Dumbo with my wife and 1 year old.
If you guys find any I haven’t mentioned that he doesn’t end up fitting well on let me know too, I’d love to know more. And feel free to reach out too if you have any ride specific questions I could answer!
As a heads up, unfortunately the 3D glasses on FOP are old and have lots of micro-scratches on them now. As a result, the screen is not crystal clear like when it was new and (imo) is downright blurry during the dark scenes. Other people on this sub have also reported the water spray jets not working sometimes too. It's still an awesome ride, but just wanted to let you know so you're (hopefully) not underwhelmed.
I only know a couple at CP like I think Mav and Gatekeeper maybe. Like you can only be this tall.
Technically, every ride probably has a max height written into the operating guideline by the manufacturer, but most are so high that they’re never enforceable or posted. However, I’m 6’4 and have occasionally ran into trouble.
Superman: ROS at SFNE was really strict when I visited and a few ride ops tried to turn me away (I rode on the old trains though, not sure if that’s still the case).
Steel Dragon at Nagashima Spaland has a pretty tight height restriction since the seats were raised and modified by B&M. I think they had to take a few inches off the clearance.
I remember the Premier invert at Hard Rock Park had one. I snuck on and ended up hitting my foot on a gravel patch towards the end of the ride. It was worth the credit imo.
Not an explicit height restriction, but Intamin invert restraints are really difficult for tall people to fit in.
Infinity Falls has a 6’5 height limit. I’ve noticed a few rapid rides with similar height limits
The three times I've been to SFNE in the last 5 years, I've seen at least 1 person turned away from Superman for being too tall.
How painful was it hitting your foot while on a coaster?
I actually didn't even notice until I got off the ride and saw my toe bleeding (I was wearing flip-flops)
Wild Eagle at Dollywood is 6’5”
I think MF has a height maximum
That's only arm length
Oh. I thought it was height., but CP's website says it has a 78" max
Yukon striker has a 6'5 height limit
Vertical velocity at SFGAm does
