Storytelling Depth and Detail
The light novel (LN) of "Solo Leveling" is often praised for its detailed storytelling, providing a deeper understanding of character motivations and plot intricacies. Readers have noted that the LN offers more context for scenes and situations, which can enrich the overall narrative experience [1:3]
[2:6]. The manhwa, while visually appealing, tends to simplify or omit certain details from the LN to maintain a faster pace
[4:2].
Character Development
In terms of character development, the LN provides a more comprehensive exploration of characters' thoughts and decisions. Some readers feel that the manhwa portrays the protagonist, Jinwoo, as more of a "badass epic anime guy," which might detract from the nuanced portrayal found in the LN [4:4]. However, others appreciate the visual representation of characters in the manhwa, which helps with visualization
[5:3].
Visual Appeal
The manhwa is highly regarded for its art and character designs, which many find to be one of its strongest points [2:2]
[5:5]. The visuals can enhance the reading experience by bringing action scenes to life and providing a clear image of the characters and settings
[1:4]. For some, this makes the manhwa a more engaging entry point into the series
[5:4].
Adaptation Choices
Due to its popularity, the manhwa has made certain adaptation choices to appeal to a broader audience. This includes avoiding some content that might not resonate well with specific audiences, such as the Japanese market [1:2]. These changes can lead to differences in how the story is perceived between the two formats.
Reading Order Recommendations
For those new to "Solo Leveling," some suggest starting with the manhwa to get familiar with the characters and world through its compelling visuals before diving into the more detailed LN [3:1]
[5:4]. Others recommend the opposite, starting with the LN for a richer narrative experience and then enjoying the manhwa for its artistic interpretation
[3:2]. Ultimately, the choice depends on whether you prioritize detailed storytelling or visual engagement.
I was wondering because I want to read it but I'm not sure if I want to start over.
Since the manhwa gained huge popularity, they have avoided some portions of the LN to not piss off Japanese audience. Also, I am glad that the manhwa came out. It was really hard for me to keep track of every character with only their names, since these names are mostly foreign to me. Having a face and hair color to relate to them is very helpful
I would say the light novel is epic on its own way. I started to read the LN because i couldn’t wait anymore & I wanted to know whats going to happen in the next Chapters. And like the others already said, the whole story is told in a more detailed way than the Manhwa.
Well the manhwa has extremely cool Panels but the Light Novel has way more deteils in everything
Where could I find the light novel? I like reading the light novel and then seeing how they end up drawing the chapters.
Thanks! I use this site for other LN. Never knew SLW was there as well.
Definitely worth it. Now that you know the settings of each scene, the light novel gives a more detailed explaination on what's going on.
I've read all the Light novels and Idk if I should buy the rest of the Manhwa. (I already have 1-4) I know the story changes a bit and Jinwoo's character is a lot different from the LN to Manhwa. (Losing his emotions or whatever) Also idk if I like some of the character designs in the Manhwa and I don't want it to ruin the LNs for me. Should I get them or nah?
You can definitely read the manhwa too... The manhwa has got one of the best art and the character designs are pretty cool... If u wanna experience of Jin Woo u should definitely read it.. U have already read the LN So uk what happens.. u won't need much time either now to go through the Manhwa... So if u feel like u can definitely read it
It helps Tha knowledge from the manga helps fill in the gaps
The manhwa is a step down in terms of storytelling but the art is worth it
For me the jeju arc in the manwha is way better. And I have read some of the post-story ln parts too (~chapters 180+ for the manwha) not really that impressive for me
Can you tell me which ln has the biggest diffenrences?
It’s more about the level of description you get from ln to manhwa to anime. Some parts of the ln are a drag but there are some seriously terrible arcs in the manhwa
Sadly 90% of media is like this. The novel or written form is the best for story and lore and everything while the adaptations are worse in that regard but the art/animation is insane. Solo leveling could not be more on that trope as well.
Also bought all of the Light Novels and will ask the same question to myself in a few months. Guess I know the answer.
Yes
Yes
So i want to read Solo Leveling and i want someone who really is with it to explain me what is novel and do i need to read it to start the manhwa or just read it without the novel?
I'd recommend the oposite from the others.
Novels usually go deeper into character motivations and development, and have increased context for all scenes and situations. The novel in this case is just a WN so it's still not as complex as a full fledged LN, but that makes it an easier and quicker read, though it still serves as a more in depth version of the story.
Lately, I've developed a habit of reading novels first and then going for manga and or anime, and it has been a good one, since it greatly enriches the graphic form of the story. Knowing what the characters think and feel just makes me care more about them, and seeing them animated just becomes a super fun bonus.
Thanks you
You can read the manhwa first if you want and the art is great but ive also heard that the LN is better but most people read both(most meaning by most LN readers read the manhwa as well)
Thank you
Most people i have seen have read the manhwa first and then continued with the Novel. The novel is basically a book and the manhwa is made based on it. As all books are it is more detailed that the manhwa. The solo leveling manhwa is a good adaptation in my opinion so while it does leave stuff out it isnt alot. If you like the manhwa, continue with the novel, if you liked the novel and the story and you wonder what was changed or missed in the manhwa you can then reread the novel from the beginning
Thank you
i've read manhwa and after manhwa ongoing part i started reading novel and already done with main story. i want to hear your opinions, whats better? personally i like novel more because its more detailed and because its most original. while manhwa is easy to read and has really good art.
why i dont like manhwa is because it looks as if some badass epic anime guy beats all of his enemies. and novel shows every detail without making him look that badass and is more focused on everyone's thoughts and decisions.
so again, what's your opinion on novel and manhwa?
I would say the light novel is better on the long run after getting the character models from the manhwa. I read the manhwa till like after the S rank reveal then moved to the ln and it helped me visualize the characters better as most of them are introduced by then. So conclusion read manhwa early then change to ln it’s fun. That was the visual side of things.
Now the story telling side of it I think the ln nailed it better than the manhwa as in the manhwa apart from the comedic scenes and the funeral scene there isn’t a lot of insight and character depth to sung Jinwoo whereas the light novel clearly shows his mindset from his love of his family to his mental struggles.
Also beru and igrit are fucking badass
Well to be fair, we got a lot of thought reading in the manhwa, not just as much as the LN of course.
i find manhwa character models wrong to some solo leveling characters tho
I prefer manhwa because i suck with imagination so i like to see panels, what happens in certain situations with illustrations
i guess you gotta try reading it. maybe you'll train your imagination
I mean that's all pretty vague for reading something. I am on board with you that same like a good fiction book with a good imagination it's a very superb experience. But some people lack imagination and creativity it's an ability you can learn to an extend but not fully. And it might still be disappointing. In the end without certainly good Imagination/creativity, reading the web novel might suck. Than rather watch someone's imagination, creativity, skill being visualized and find it quite joyful. Ofcourse at cost of some personal preferences that maybe are not displayed. There is a reason there is a hierarchy of criticism regarding that. Web novel readers find the manwha not deep enough. Manwha readers find the anime/movie not deep enough. I mean we all know what happened with game of thrones and certain interpretations. And how people always said the book is far better because it's more specific.
I wouldn't have read the novel and enjoyed the story like I did if it wasn't for the mahnwa helping me imagine and visualize all the characters and actions and stuff, I love the manhwa. So, things like lack of character depth, I can just ignore them.
I binged caught up in manwha. Then COMMIT! Read the light novel with robot ivona Kendra reader voice while scrolling page by page in the manwha. Eventually when manwha ran out I could imagine rest of the show easily till part 2. Fights get a little crazy with the M's and I found it difficult to imagine them fighting. The world class hunters are humans so its easy to imagine the fights (you know what I mean).
Anyway, I would recommend that route. I would even pop one bluetooth earbud in at work and listen to it imagine it while working. So, I binged it. Tbh, its my favorite anime/manga whatever story. Simply put, it begins and ends no B.S. where I had to wait 10 years to get the ending or 30 years like One Piece(I read that too weekly).
I plan on re-reading it. I really like the story progression.
Wow, that's some dedication! But frankly, I feel like monotone voice of a robot wouldn't sit that well in my ears.
Anyway, Solo leveling just proves video game-like progression does really good to comic series, especially webtoons.
Same man, I really needed to see Jin woo in action and the ongoing system informations to really enjoy the novel
Their characters are well explored in the very end on the sides stories which make a complete closure to the series.
Characters that matter of course.
Light novel best
No questions needed
Hey all, I've watched anime all my life (never read any manga) and needed something refreshing. I'm trying to get into Solo Leveling as I've heard a lot of good things about it, however I am confused if I should read the manhwa or the novel. What is the best way to experience Solo Leveling?

I would do the Manhwa first so you at least know what the characters look like
I second this. You dont even have to go that far. Probably till Jeju ark if you want. And then jump to the novel. Its just sometimes they way they describe the characters lets just say that it didnt align with the manhwa very much hahaha
I say manga and then novel if you want more details and a bit less one sided beat down of everything. The novel shows alot more and nearing the end of the manga it feels like their rushing through it all
Manga i guess is more of a way to get into it instead of getting invested
Manhwa having visuals hypes you up a lot more than reading the novel
Manhwa
I was in a bookstore recently and saw the Solo Leveling Physical Manhwa Volumes and I checked them out. Comparing it to the online manhwa version I noticed that the editors moved some panels around in different order and also had to crop and edit panels to fit in the book page format (for example the second picture is a page from chapter 1 and it’s different than the manhwa). I already read the entire manhwa so I am considering collecting the physical books but I’m interested in hearing from the community what you think about the physical books and if any of you have bought them!

they're okay, i have the Physical volumes, while i prefer the webtoon, the smell of the volumes, the print is just too good
In sl's case the way they made it for print media is great, just be sure you get the one that uses the korean format for names, some do full translations and start with the first name, which removes the iconic sung jin woo(last name, first name)
its a lot of work to change the format to print tho, which is generally why a lot of webtoons / manwha don't print it unless its really popular
Thank you for your reply! How do I tell if it’s korean format or full translations? I was looking at buying the paperbacks from Amazon
that one i'm not sure of, I just know the one i got which is from yen press has the really translated one with the non-korean names format, so the other one might be different as i'm aware there are other publishers.
The actual panelling is cooler in the webtoon as it allows for long panels that can’t be re created in a physical format
But the books are great for a physical adaptation and good for people who want to collect them
Thank you for your reply! I agree, I’m glad I already read it so I can use them for having a nice collection and supporting the creators haha
I've read all the ones out in English, and they are good. The paneling they do feels natural.
Thank you for your reply! I am excited to collect them, glad to know it still feels natural
My sister and I recently bought some of the Solo Leveling physical volumes, and noticed that the chapter counts are very different from the webtoon. Does anyone know of a list or chart that shows which webtoon chapters each physical volume chapter contains?
I just wanted to start reading the manhwa and just opened the two first websites that appeared after I searched for it. But these two versions seem very different from each other. Of course the translation differs but also some whole passages are missing or different. Is there a "correct" version and if so which one is it?
Here are the two websites I used: https://w3.sololeveling.net/ https://levelingsolo.com/
I read them off the webtoon app
Is the webtoon different from the manga or is it basically the same just with changing format? Also, is it free to read the English webtoon?
Exact same. Its a long strip made of several smaller strips

Well, personally I read on sololeveling.com and for now I haven't seen discontinuity in the storytelling - be it missing panels or bad translation. Sometimes as you said there is an image spread across two panels, but I don't find the slightest of problem there. Usually I read the chapter too fast to even notice it.
The site I used before was mangadex.org, but you may find some problems with the translation there such as usually there are at least 2 English subs and many more on different languages. Despite this, the most viewed one is usually pretty good anyways.
But when it come to which one I prefer, sololeveling.com beats mangadex such as you can see exactly when the next chapter comes out.
I have just started the manhwa because I thought that was how the author wrote it and it was then turned into a LN later on. But it seems it was the opposite, so is there any big differences?
This is a joke, right?? The series was only popular because of its phenomenal art. The novel was about 80% how the audience breathe in awe of SJW, 15% named characters with no usefulness and 5% story.
I hated SJW's love interest. It felt forced. Like we saw Cha Hae-In for a few scans, and then that's it. Jinwoo blushed when he saw her in the shower (if my memory served me right), and he barely thought about her again afterward. Now they have a son together?? Maybe this ain't what u was talking bout, but I needed to rant, lol😭
That's because there's no character development in this manwha. I enjoyed it enough to buy the first book, I go to a bookstore often and noticed that they started releasing quite a few webtoons and light novels nowadays. Anyway, big fan but damn is it overrated. It's good at its simplicity. A straightforward story about a guy becoming OP very quickly and dealing with everything quickly. I preferred the first 70% of the story than the rest so I would definitely have enjoyed more world building and character development early on to keep the better part going longer.
It wasn’t forced in the light novel. For example, the phone call before he went to fight Antares literally doesn’t exist in the light novel! And it even breaks the story a little because Jin-Woo later says he can’t call his family cuz he’d hesitate!
I am thinking about reading the novel, but please tell me if the Manhwa representation of Thomas Andre was at least close to the novel. I love that he is a big fluff with a hard shell in the Manhwa.
Otherwise I just stay with the Manhwa version.
Thomas was an asshole in the novel. His character got flipped all of a sudden after his defeat and got turned into what you see in the manwha. No build up to his personality, it just happened to showcase that he got humbled by SJW when he defeated him, so I'd say the manwha did it better on all fronts..
You can try the novel if you want to see how the mobs make comments to glorify SJW.
Story wise, light novel. I recommend you read the manhwa to ch 110, and after that read the light novel from ch 124, cuz from there a lot of the story gets cut out. Then use the manhwa for visualization.
I'd say the WN as its the source material. The webtoon was good but they reducted too much
You're right but it's also better because it lets you use your imagination to picture the situation and then you can correct yourself on the manwha
This is really really late, but does the manwha and light novel cover the same timeline and story exactly?
Read the manhwa first. The art is top tier 👌
If we’re being honest, in terms of manhwa even of this leveling genre,
Solo leveling has great art and started well off, but was actually pretty mid in terms of character and world building.
Its all just about the MC. So i’d just read the manhwa for the great art and enjoy it, because if you’re looking for deep plot or anything like that i don’t think you’ll find it here.
Most things are just stepping stones for mc to beat up.
I just recently started and finished solo leveling anime and I cannot wait for season 3. I'm too impatient to wait so I'm thinking of ordering the Manhwa's. I can order them from Crunchyroll, however I can't see anywhere listed stating if they are the English translated ones or not.
they sell bundles in volumes 1-4, 5-8, 9-11 then 12 and 13 are separate. I know only 11 are translated to English so far, so I'm wondering if those bundles are the English translated versions or not. Is there any way to be 100% certain that the bundles are the English version before ordering though?
Another route is the light novels. They even have audiobook versions on Spotify :3
Personally, I’m not a big reader. I can’t sit down and read a novel. I have a poor imagination and I believe I have aphantasia, I cannot picture things in my mind. My wife loves reading and she talks about how she can imagine the scenes of what’s happening in books she’s reading, I lack that ability. So for that reasoning I would much prefer the manwha’s with the pictures as they would keep me interested.
I have found the manwhas online and have been reading them and they’re amazing, but I would still like to purchase the physical copies.
I mean if you are fine with it, you can always pirate them, from mangakatana, or light novel, but i wouldn't say read light novel, if it would be your first
I got all 13 off of Amazon, all in English.
Adapted by "h-goon" 🥀
Just pirate it or use tachiyomi
I am really confused... Although i like reading novels but manhua are also good. Will i be missing some lore if i read manhua?
Do both, there are some things that are missed in the manhwa (like the ending) read the manhwa and then there might be some things u missed so then read the novel.
Novel isn’t good, but it gives more details that weren’t present in the manhwa, and then read the manhwa cause the art is fantastic.
Manwha first, then on the last 2 chapters, start the novel at 232, I think because the manwha left out a bit at the end.
LN first for my detailed stories and info that wasn’t present in Manhwa
Yes but the art is nice
What will i be missing?? I like mahua bcz it really gives a good representation.
Not much at the start there are some prologue chapters in the novel that the manhua omits
