Tips for Buying Concert Tickets on a Budget

Timing Your Purchase

One of the most effective strategies for buying concert tickets on a budget is timing. Many users suggest waiting until the last minute to purchase tickets, as prices often drop significantly just before the event. This is because scalpers or individuals who can no longer attend are eager to recoup some of their costs [1:5], [5:1]. However, this method can be risky if you need to travel or if the event is likely to sell out [1:2].

Presale and Face Value Tickets

Purchasing tickets during presales can sometimes offer better prices than waiting for general sales, especially if the event is in high demand [3:2]. Additionally, being diligent about checking ticket platforms frequently can help you snag face-value tickets that might appear closer to the event date [5:1].

Venue-Specific Strategies

Buying tickets directly from the venue box office can save you from additional fees associated with online purchases [1:2]. Some venues release prime seats reserved for artists' friends and family a day or two before the event, which can be an excellent opportunity to get great seats at face value [1:6], [1:7].

Utilizing Resale Platforms

Platforms like StubHub can be useful for finding tickets at lower prices as the event approaches. These platforms may have tickets available for less than face value, particularly if sellers are desperate to offload them [3:4], [5:2].

Avoiding High-Demand Shows

If you're flexible about which concerts to attend, avoiding shows that are expected to be extremely popular can also help you stay within your budget. Less popular events are less likely to sell out quickly and more likely to have tickets available at lower prices closer to the event date [1:8].

By combining these strategies, you can increase your chances of securing concert tickets without breaking the bank. Remember to keep an eye on ticket platforms, consider presales, and be ready to act quickly when you find a good deal.

This may sound naive - Im the first to admit I dont know what Im doing- but has anyone figured out how to game concert ticket prices? I thought it best to buy early, but then they seem to go down- other times they go up before the show. Im guessing it has to do w how popular the show is but is there a consistent rule of thumb? Ill give an example- my daughter wanted to see Dead & Co in LA. It seemed like a popular show where prices would go up (or even sell out) so I bought early. Right before the show there were still seats and tix were a fraction the orig price. (Im guessing the same wld not be true of for a Taylor Swift concert, but really confused re how to secure a ticket at best possible price.) thank you!

It depends on how badly you want to see the show. When I can, I buy with cash at the venue. Some venues will still charge you TM fees if you use a cc. Others don't. It's good to look into. If driving to the venue is not an option for you, it's going to be a balance of how badly you want to see the band or how upset you would be if you lost the gamble of waiting for ticket prices to drop. Is the show going to sell out? Ticket prices may not go down if it sells out.

Live Nation does $25 sales for a lot of summer shows. Keep an eye out for that promotion to see if any of those shows interest you.

This method is a gamble, but it often works very well for me.

Oftentimes and customarily, the artist has a row or so of seats reserved by the venue for their friends and family ..... If not claimed a day or two before the event, they are often released for sale by the venue box office ..... And these seat are prime ..... usually dead center up front in first and second row.

Ive gotten AMAZING seats this way at face value, but you usually need to go online a day or two before the event at the venues website/box office/ticket sales page as they rarely end up on ticketmaster unless the venue doesn't have their own ticket purchase portal (rare)

Now, the down side to this method is you may get shut out when all tickets are spoken for.
However, Ive found this method to be successful 50-60% of the time.

I almost didn't share this method because now I'll have to try and beat all you guys to those prime, handful of seats next show! Lol

If you try this, your successful and you end up sitting next to me in the front row ...... You can buy me a beer as thanks! 👍

When was the last time you tried this? This used to work reliably years ago, but I have not seen it for any events in recent years. I think the era of premium experiences, dynamic pricing, etc. killed all that as they aren't going to hold back seats that will potentially command hundreds to thousands of dollars.

It depends on the artist and production and the promoter when the tickets are released.

Artists typically have a list planned ahead that their tour manager will pass along to the venue. Once it's determined that the band's guestlist is done, and press and photographers, and publicity tickets are accounted for, any remaining tickets will go up for sale. Depending on the artists and contract, it could be up close seats, but is usually about 8-15 rows back, in front of the soundboard.

This is a very real hack. There are VIP tickets reserved in prime locations for damn near every show, and not all of them get distributed by the artist or promoter. These are usually released anywhere from hours to minutes before showtime.

I leveraged this hack to secure 2nd row tickets to see Prince in London during his 3121 residency at the O2, paying just £31.21 per seat! As you note, it is risky.

Not quite as good but I've seen them drop the "vip" portion to sell the tix at a regular price.

My opinion is if it is a show you don't want to miss, but early and secure them. If you could've got them cheaper in the end, who cares. If it's a show that you can take it or leave it, buy week of, night of

Also, note that arena shows are highly likely to have last minute tickets where smaller venues you just don't know

If you can wait, then best prices will appear the day of leading up to show time as scalpers or people that couldn't go at the last minute look to recoup whatever money they can

Depending on the circumstances, this may not be desirable because you won't really be able to choose your seating area and if you have to travel it could be nerve-wracking to not have tickets secured (at least for me)

For most concerts it's very likely that tickets will be available. Generally, I would think it needs to be a super-exclusive one-off concert with really high demand for there to be no tickets (or prices so high to be unreasonable).

Think last show of Taylor Swift Eras tour, the upcoming Black Sabbath reunion with Ozzy, or Paul McCartney playing a secret show in a small club. Something like that.

I want to surprise my Boyfriend with tickets

Posted by Strong-Emu2104 · in r/LadyGaga · 3 months ago

Hello everyone!

I’ve never posted onto Reddit before but I’m trying to surprise my boyfriend with tickets but am finding it very hard to do. We both love attending concerts and have wanted to find more concerts to go to together with artists we both enjoy. Whenever I see a concert for an artist that I’m dying to see I try to jump on it day one with whatever presale I can get access to. Lady Gaga was never an artist I thought too much about seeing live even though I’m a big fan of her music I never followed anything she did live. My boyfriend told me about her MAYHEM tour and I told him I’d help get him tickets but what we both didn’t realize was that the presale had started two days prior to us learning about it. When we went to look for seats it was all resellers selling tickets for 1,000+ for nose bleed seats. We called it a loss and said we’d pay more attention for the next time she tours near us.

Throughout the next couple months I life turned into a bit of hell money wise. My car broke down twice in a month leading to over $8,000 in repairs and during that time my boyfriend paid for my rental car and helped me keep my house stocked with food as well as just helped me with everything I couldn’t afford because all my money went into my car. My car now runs better than ever and my boyfriend is moving in with me at the beginning of July so I will have extra money to do whatever I want with. I was originally going to use all the extra money to pay off some debts but with everything my boyfriend has done for me I want to try and get him lady Gaga tickets for one of her Chicago shows (the closet ones near us) the cheapest best seats I could find were $1,793.34 in total for two seats in the nose bleeds next to the bar (he loves to drink lol)

I made a plan for the next few months and would be able to save up money and have $1,800 in my savings account on August 28th. While I know I’ll be able to have that money on that day literally anything can happen between now and then causing me to not be able to have that much money. I also don’t want to risk someone else buying the tickets before then and missing my chance. On top of that I’d need to be able to pay for a hotel as Chicago is about 5 hours away from where we live and don’t I want to drive that far after I get out of a concert at midnight (I’ve done it before it sucks).

So to make a long post short is there anyway to find these tickets cheaper? I really want to surprise my boyfriend with them because he’s given me the most love I’ve ever felt from anyone ever and I want to give him one of the best gifts I can think of. Until then I have a lot of saving up to do!

Thank you (:

You should totally wait until right before the concert. The tickets will drop. I’ve had 2 up at reasonable prices for over a month and they haven’t sold, I don’t think they’re going any where.

Oh my God! I am trying to take a bunch of my friends, old and new, to her concert. Super excited. Saw her in 2010 with a group of friends, and it was more meaningful than many of the nights and days before. She is impressive and puts forth effort to know her fans. She is our Ms. GAGA, and I look forward to seeing her with some of my amazing friends. So excited! BTW, last concert my friends consisted of two punk rock people and my besty and myself dressed to the nines(wish I had done my hair more fierce, but I plan on fixing that this time around! Oh and I'm planning on making my boys wear black eyeliner and nail polish. So fucking excited. Lol! Worst they can say is "no"! Lol yeah as if they have a choice?!? Uh hmm not!

Given your financial stressors, I think you should reconsider your ticket budget. $1800 for 2 nose bleed seats sounds ridiculous. Surely more reasonably priced tickets at least under $500 (which would still be considered very expensive for nosebleed seats) each will come up between now and the showtime.

I completely agree!! 1800 for 2 nose bleeds is crazy!! This is definitely something I know I will never financially recover from but money is always something I can make back. Memories with my boyfriend and the big fat smile of pure joy on his face with be worth every penny (:

Advice for getting the best value?

Posted by Robpm9995 · in r/Concerts · 6 years ago

Hey guys, I've been to quite a few concerts before and I was wondering if there are any tips or tricks to getting the best value when buying tickets.

There's an artist coming to my area in the fall and its one of my absolute biggest heroes. I want to get as close as possible without breaking the bank.

It's in an arena, and my biggest concern is that my girlfriend and I won't be able to see because of taller people in front of us if we get floor seats. I'm concerned that if we get seats on the side, we won't be all that close.

Any tips or tricks are greatly appreciated.

Ugh, I hate floor seats so much!!!!

Like, just have a general admission standing area!!

So I totally get your concerns! Who are you going to see?

And yeah, you'll probably have to be ready online 5 mins before tickets go on sale and be prepared with your laptop / phone and whatever other devices you have and try and be the first one to obtain tickets. If you're lucky, you can select front row seats.

Does the website have the venue map up already?

1 upvotes on reddit
Robpm9995 · OP · 6 years ago

Phil Collins! I can understand why they have seats being that his fanbase tends to be older people, I have a suspicion that even the old people won't be sitting for the show (by suspicion, I mean I watched some Youtube clips from last years tour).

Ticketmaster doesn't have a map up yet, but thr Citicard Pre sale starts tomorrow, but of course, I'll be in class. I'm going to try my best right after class!

1 upvotes on reddit
PrincessSparkle87 · 6 years ago

Can you be a few minutes late to class? Can one of your friends get the tickets? Your parents? Just give them your card details? Is there a presale happening now? Sometimes there's like 2 or 3 presales!! Good luck!!!

The cheapest tickets you will find will be when they are first released. Sometimes bots will pick up a large amount of them and then you’ll see them being resold for 300% the original value. So, the best bet on the cheapest you’ll ever see them is right when they are released.

About the tall people: You can be the person who gets in line at the show super early, get a spot on the front rail and never leave that spot the whole night. That’s just takes so much effort. I usually show up half an hour past doors, and wiggle my way to a good spot front and center. If tall people get in my way, I change locations, like a couple feet to the left or right. I’m not particularly short though. If the venue has a balcony, that’s usually a guaranteed great view.

PrincessSparkle87 · 6 years ago

Oh, so you're one of those people who have no respect for the people that DO queue and worm your way to front anyway?!?!? * Death glare * (And I'm not here to start fights damnit, I love this subreddit, but as someone who does queue and spends 12 hours sitting outside getting sunburned or frozen etc etc just so I can see my heroes up close, to then have people like you get to the front.... Is highly infuriating!!! So, genuinely curious and yes, slightly angry / annoyed question: WHY??? Why not just queue if you want to be at the front?!)

1 upvotes on reddit
F
furrytractor_ · 6 years ago

I never shove people to get to the front. Usually when the show starts, the pit opens or people start dancing. People are moving so much that it’s really easy to move forward. You spending 12 hours outside and getting all worked up.. that’s your decision lol. Crowds move so much that getting there first really doesn’t matter with where you end up.

Ticket buying encouragement

Posted by [deleted] · in r/pearljam · 5 months ago

I wanted to offer some encouragement here for those who are looking to go to the upcoming shows, but are feeling discouraged by the prices. Be patient and wait for week-of postings on Ticketmaster. I was able to score very good seats in a lower section right by the stage in Philly for a fair price two days before the show. Do not cave to the current premium or resale prices. Something will open up. Best of luck to everyone.

Seconded. I got awesome seats for Philly Saturday Night the night before at like 11pm.

Be diligent, check often and be ready to check out as fast as possible.

If you see a pair at face - don’t even debate it. Just grab it. Have your credit card info saved and expiration up to date. Just because you have the pair in your cart, someone else can still get them from out from under you, so be fast! And don’t be discouraged when someone else snipes you for your tickets. It happens over and over. That’s where the diligence on your part comes in.

Be ready at checkout to check 3 boxes lightning fast:

  • A box to enter the 3 digits on back of your card

  • A check box if you want ticket insurance

  • A check box at the bottom saying you agree to whatever and then hit buy at the bottom.

Good luck! See you out there

This largely depends on the country.

In Korea, scalping is less of a major issue though it still does exist. Most concerts in Korea only allow you to buy a single ticket which is attached to your ID. You can not transfer tickets in Korea officially and only the person who purchases the ticket can pick up that ticket at the venue. Scalpers find buyers and then refund their tickets to free them up for the buyer. This is opposed to Ticketmaster in the US which allows people to buy 6 tickets, price gouges their own tickets with the "platinum" tickets, and allows reselling on their own site.

In Japan, it is illegal to sell tickets above face value which helps considerably.

Multiple accounts, multiple devices, fast internet, having your information preloaded, all of this helps. However when going up against dedicated scalper bots, the odds are stacked against you and there's not much you can do. Ticketmaster in the US doesn't care about scalpers because they benefit from them. If all tickets are sold, that's all they care about since they get their cut. Furthermore, if scalpers buy then many will resell through their website, which allows them to take another cut effectively double dipping. It also allows them to sell their "platinum" tickets which are just official tickets sold at scalper prices so they can make even more money. Its a blatant example of greed.

Its for this reason, I don't attend concerts in the US too often or if I do, avoid going through ticketmaster. In other countries, I will see what tickets I can get and I usually have no problem getting a ticket for a concert at face value.

Only for IU concerts do I do first 1-2 rows but I go through alternative means than scalpers most of the time for those.

tips:

- get friends and families to help. my sister, mom, and friends helped me get tickets. super grateful to them tbh lol

- get your card info save onto your Ticketmaster account for a faster checkout. And dont forget to log in!

- use data and wifi. if you know a place that have lots of computers and good wifi, go there. i took advantage of my campus/university library computer lab.

- multiple devices. i always have an ipad, 2 phones, 2 laptops, and my desktop computer all set to go.

- i made sure to get into the virtual waiting room asap; 2-3 hours prior.

i always mentally prepare myself, too so i:

- drank water to calm me down and deep breaths.

- have positive self-talk! I always talk myself through it that i will be able to get the tickets i wanted, which idk if im super lucky but i always got the sections i wanted for all of them.

I essentially got a two for one deal based off most other prices I seen for similar seats. We had a blast, no regrets and still had some spending money left over for some merch and beer. Ha! I could have bought these tickets nearly 10 times over for what I paid on the 2023 tour. I did pay more than I did last year, but I could tell the difference in value. I’ve definitely learned that it’s best to play the waiting game no matter how anxious you might get.

If you really wanna risk it for the biscuit look for tickets an hour before doors open. I went to the SD show (reunion tour). Flew back to norcal, and said I'd wing it for the Sac show. I did this on advice from here and got great seats. After doors open it's harder to sell tickets bc people plan other things to do instead so prices typically drop.

If you have time before the show you want to attend check tix for the shows before to verify.

2 upvotes on reddit
MiraQuienEs · 8 days ago

Do u suggest buying tickets like this within one hour before doors open or within one hour after doors open?

1 upvotes on reddit
norcalifornyeah · 8 days ago

During the reunion tour small batches of tickets that previously weren't available dropped an hour before the show for face value. I'm not sure if it's the same this tour so I would check for shows that are before the one you want to attend to see if it's the same this tour.

The other advice I received is to check prices after doors open if you weren't able to secure tickets before the show. Most people have committed to other things at that point and it's better for a scalper to sell for some money than no money. (We're talking online scalpers on legit ticket platforms, I personally don't trust scalpers in person but I don't think you can hard tickets for many events unless it's sports or music festivals).

If you have to travel a long ways it might not be worth the risk for the savings, but I make alternate plans just in case I don't get tickets. Catch a movie or grab dinner somewhere.

All the tickets I looked at were only for the pit bc I didn’t wanna go if I wouldn’t be in the pit. So worth a shot check it out and keep an eye out. On StubHub I found some that were a little higher so I went with Ticketmaster!

Last Minute Tickets?

Posted by Maverick_Hunter_Ace · in r/Concerts · 4 months ago

There's a concert happening nearby this Saturday that I really want to go to. When I looked at tickets a month and a half ago, the venue was already sold out. I've looked on some ticket resell websites where they're more money, but I have no idea if they're just scalpers or potentially scams. Is there possibly a way I could still purchase a ticket from someone legitimate for this concert? Or should I just accept I won't be able to make this one?

I'm still pretty new to concerts. I only went to my first one ever back in 2023.

Just wanted to add a thanks to the post! I've read all the comments and appreciate the advice and suggestions! I'll definitely check all of it out! This helps a lot!

Production holds are often released in the days leading up to, or even day of, shows. Often really good seats at reasonable prices, too.

Assuming Ticketmaster is handling sales keep checking their site. Additional tickets are often released 2 to 3 days before the show.

Everyone reselling tickets is by definition a scalper. If you don't mind paying extra most of the resale sites are reasonably safe.

Not necessarily. People also resell tickets because they can't make it anymore. Reselling on ticketswap isn't really interesting for scalpers, as you can only sell it for 20% more than what you bought it for.

Keep checking Ticketmaster. I once got 2nd row to a sold-out Earth Wind & Fire show, 24 hours before the show started, for face value. (Mike Damone was no help!)

LPT: When buying tickets for an event, make sure you are getting the best deal you can.

Posted by royaladrian · in r/LifeProTips · 7 years ago

Always look at more than one option before buying anything. Having fallen for deceptive scalping techniques recently, I want to share my experience in hopes nobody else has to pay 5x what they should.

A few days ago I was looking at a show coming up in the next few months to my area. And in haste I went on my phone to buy a ticket, saw what came up first on google and proceeded to purchase a tickets for 120 including fees. Being a popular artist, this seemed reasonable at the time. Now, I went back onto google this morning to see if there were still any tickets available, this time on my computer. Come to find out, there art multiple links to Eventbrite where tickets were going for 27 including fees. Turns out what I saw on my phone (as the first result on google) was an Ad, usually these are the first results. Though they don't always show up (only being distinguished by a [ad] next to the url). So the link that was being advertised, was sending me to Ticketoffices. This website that did not come up on the google search normally, not on the first page, not even the first 5 or 10. This website was clearly placed as an Ad because they payed to be there. This angers me mostly because I wasted $90 I can't get back. Just Be careful out there with your money.

TL;DR: Paid for tickets from a website being advertised on google. Only should have paid a fifth of what I did. Never trust the Ads.

If possible, buy tickets at the box office and avoid the add-on fees.

concert/live show guide needed

Posted by unumtheone · in r/TwoBestFriendsPlay · 1 month ago

Hello fellow nerds. I am planning on going to a live show in the near future with my wife and I've been put in charge of figuring out tickets. This show has yet to be scheduled but it is assumed that it will happen. With that in mind, rather than ask some random subreddit, I figured I'd ask here (better ask reddit) for some help. As the title suggests I need a concert/live show sherpa to help with some questions because I have never been to one or purchased tickets to one.
Here's what I already know. 1: it's going to be costly and that's fine. Its already budgeted so no problems there. 2: the ticket buying process is going to be miserable. I'm already mentally preparing myself to be frustrated by this process but my hope is the answer to my questions here will help with that.
Now to the questions. 1: is there anyway to increase my chances to aquire tickets from the primary source? I realize this is the plight of all regular people trying to get to a live show but any pro tips would be helpful. 2: since #1 is very unlikely and I will be dealing with the secondary market (FUCK SCALPERS!!!) is there a sure fire way, other than the old adage of "if it looks too good to be true then it likely isn't true", to spot a fake ticket scam? The last thing I need to to pay for everything, travel several hours to a city, get to the venue only to be told I got got. 3: is it better to dive to the venue yourself and find parking or is it better to Uber in and out? I know that both options have Thier advantages but which is truly better? 4: are there any live show pro tips that any of you have for first timers?

For now that's all I can think of but I'll likely ask follow up questions in the comments. Thanks in advance for you help all.

Get your tickets from the venue website or the links on the band’s socials.

As for trying to nab tickets, sometimes sales starts a few minutes before they are supposed to. Check when they got up for sale, ready yourself at your computer 15 minutes before, and refresh until you can buy them.

For question 3, that is completely dependent on the location of the venue. I can usually find a spot within a 10 minutes walk when I see shows in Quebec City, but when I have to go to Montreal I tend to park near a subway station and take it to the show.

As for question 4, what type of show are you going to? Outside festival? Big stadium superstar? Niche genre in a relatively small venue?

The show is going to be a superstar who recently announced a new album so the likelihood of a tour is high. we are hoping for a Minneapolis/st. paul show but will take Chicago if that happens.. This person sells out full stadiums shows faster than an eye blink if that matters.

I don’t really go to superstar shows that sell out immediately, so I can’t really help you much more.

That said, the one positive point of ticketmaster is they have a certified ticket reselling thing, so if the venue uses it, you most certainly will be able to get a ticket… but it’ll probably be at a hugely inflated price unless you’re lucky. If that’s the case, keep looking up the website just in case someone who’s not a scalper needs to sell theirs, and you might get them at normal prices. It’s more likely to happen if the date is coming up snd scalpers dump their stock.

Go to the venues website, and they should have a spot to purchase tickets. Aside from ridiculous ticketmaster fees, the process is usually pretty painless. Its pretty city dependent, but ive never had an issue getting tickets from the primary source. Id say its worth it to ask in the city subreddit where you're seeing the show and the sub for the performer you're seeing. Theyll be able to give you clearer info on ticket availability and parking

I usually drive myself to the venue and make peace with the fact that its going to take 30-40 minutes to leave the parking garage. Make sure theres gas in your car and you pee before you leave. If you've got the cash to uber several hours to a different city, I'd say get a hotel room. Driving for hours, then seeing a show, and driving hours back is a pretty miserable experience. Being able to crash and drive on a full nights rest is much more comfortable and safe.

Thanks for the response :) very good advice:) as far as sleeping arrangements go the plan is to arrive the day before at a hotel, see the show day of them back to hotel, next day return home. If that changes your opinion on Uber/garage let me know. Was just curious if parking fees and surge pricing were approximately equal

I can't imagine Uber being cheaper than parking aside from edge cases like NYC. It'll be more convenient since you could walk a few blocks and call an Uber faster than you could get out of a parking garage, probably. If you do drive, take the time to back into your spot. It's much easier to find a gap to leave that way.

tips for buying concert tickets on a budget

Here are some key tips for buying concert tickets on a budget:

  1. Set a Budget: Determine how much you're willing to spend before you start looking for tickets. This will help you avoid overspending.

  2. Use Presales: Sign up for artist newsletters, fan clubs, or credit card promotions to access presale tickets, which can often be cheaper and have better availability.

  3. Compare Prices: Use ticket comparison websites like Ticketmaster, StubHub, or SeatGeek to find the best deals across different platforms.

  4. Be Flexible with Dates and Locations: If possible, consider attending concerts on weekdays or in smaller venues, as these tickets are often less expensive.

  5. Look for Discounts: Check for student, military, or group discounts. Some venues also offer last-minute deals or promotions.

  6. Buy Resale Tickets Wisely: If purchasing resale tickets, look for reputable sellers and be cautious of inflated prices. Set alerts for price drops on resale sites.

  7. Consider Package Deals: Some venues or promoters offer package deals that include tickets, merchandise, or food and drinks at a discounted rate.

  8. Follow Social Media: Follow artists and venues on social media for announcements about ticket giveaways or special promotions.

Recommendation: Start your search early and keep an eye on ticket prices over time. This way, you can spot trends and buy when prices drop. Additionally, consider attending concerts of lesser-known artists or local bands, which can be significantly cheaper and still provide a great experience.
