Control Customization
Customizing your controls can significantly improve your gameplay experience. Many players suggest changing the default controls to make actions like shooting, jumping, and dashing more intuitive. For example, using ZR for shooting and ZL for locking can help maintain focus during intense battles [1:1]. Some players prefer using a controller over keyboard controls for better handling
[4:3].
Mastering Core Mechanics
Dashing and parrying are essential skills in Cuphead. Dashing allows you to quickly evade attacks, especially when equipped with the Smoke Bomb charm, which makes you temporarily invincible [5:1]
[5:5]. Parrying is crucial for absorbing pink attacks and building your super meter; it's a timing skill that requires practice
[5:3]. Always be shooting, as this maximizes damage output while you focus on dodging
[5:2].
Weapon and Charm Selection
Choosing the right weapons and charms for each level can make a significant difference. The Roundabout shot acts like a boomerang, allowing you to focus on dodging while still hitting bosses [4:3]
[5:5]. The Chaser weapon is recommended for beginners as it doesn't require aiming
[2:3]. Experiment with different setups to find what works best for specific bosses.
Patience and Practice
Cuphead is known for its difficulty, so patience and persistence are key. Expect to die frequently, but use each defeat as a learning opportunity to understand boss patterns and refine your strategy [3:2]
[4:1]. Completing levels in simple mode first can build confidence before tackling regular mode
[2:4].
General Gameplay Tips
Avoid overcorrecting movements during bullet hell sections; small adjustments are often sufficient [3:1]. Focus on learning boss patterns and staying calm under pressure
[4:2]. Remember, taking breaks can prevent frustration and improve performance. Lastly, keep in mind that your monitor is not responsible for your failures—resist the urge to take out your anger on it
[5:4].
Hey! Fellow switch player here! Here are some tips I used to help beat the main game!
Hope these help! Cuphead is an awesome game and you'll have a blast!!
Do all the bosses in regular mode if you want to finish the game, but simple mode is good for training.
Also complete run n gun levels in order to get coins. Chaser, Spreadshot, Heart and Parry Sugar are recommended imo.
You have do regular mode to finish? Simple mode is kicking my behind! 😂
Thanks for the tips!
Master parrying.
Nuke quadratus (or however tf you spell his name)
Heya fellow Switch player! Here are my tips:
First Change Your Controls: Jump B Shoot ZR Ex Shoot A Switch Weapon X Lock ZL Dash Y
Practice Make Perfect Cuphead bosses on the one-side are each uniquely fun and adds news to the table but on the other hand goes from 0-10 as you progress.
I'd suggest practice parrying, it may seem simple but it's mandatory for the later(like King Dice.)
Weapons and Supers
Weapons are the items you buy from Porkrind.
During Inkwell Isle 1-2, Charge/Spread/Roundabout and even Peashooter are your best friends.
If you want to buy Heart early, then go for it. For Inkwell-IV buy the other items.
Super 1:This is the MVP for %80 of the bosses. This guarantees you an easy 6/6 Parry score, as long as you use when the boss is vulnerable.
Super 2:2 is invincibility, so se it for the Run-And-Gun. During my first run I didn't think about this one but I regret. Post game, w/Chalice Super 2 helped me get P ranks.
You ever played Undertale where you could go the Pacifist route by making friends/not battling them? Well, that's what P-Ranks are. They are a pain the ass so worry about them once you've unlocked Chalice and heated the DLC.
Super 3:It's useful. The only downside is as it moves around you too as well, leaving you wide-open to attacks. Just use it wisely and you should be good.
Fun Fact:By the time you're finished with Cuphead you'll have all the Weapons, Charms and Supers.
Don't Worry About Ranks(Yet)
Listen, listen I know ranks in games are fun to test your skills but for Cuphead it's stressful enough beating bosses like Dr. Kahl's Robot and Wally Werbles.
Focus on beating the boss and the DLC, then go for the Expert Mode and Acheivements.
At the end of the day you choose :).
COLLECT DEM COINS
Oh boy. After I beated Cuphead I realized that I was missing 1 coin to buy the last item and had to replay a run-and-gun to get the coin.
During your run look out for coins and hints. And definitely collect the coins in run-and-guns
Hope my guy helps😁!
._.
Smoke bomb and get the chaser, you won’t focus on aiming. And if you really have trouble. On the world map spin in a circle until Djimmi the great doubles your hp. (I am not kidding)
For me I played everything on simple mode first after then I went back and did regular and am a lot more confident with everything. The non boss levels can be done with persistence and patience. gl!
Thanks I’ll try that
Just so everyone that comments knows I’m on switch
Try different approaches at the start, I immediately bought the heart charm and couldn't beat anything, got a weapon and now I'm 300% but that doesn't seem to be the problem, but some recommendations for the three bosses:
Wally Warbles: Hug left wall and bullet are easy to dodge. Phase two just make minor adjustments, don't go out of your way to kill babies, phase three shrink to enter the shield around Willy when it opens and exit as soon as it is half closed, last phase I don't really have a tip, I just got stupid lucky with a glitch in the trash talk move where the velocity was super high so the junk immediately left the screen. Use whatever gun your comfortable with, but I'd recommend using peashot bullets on phase 1-2 and lobber bombs 3-4.
Grim Matchstick: First phase stay high and to the left, keep an eye and ear out for the tail, be careful when dodging the laser attack and wait for the fireball to come close. Second phase move to the high right and listen for a high pitch grunting noise, scan the bottom and jump out of the way. Last phase stay in the same spot, also helps avoid shooting clusterballs and it should be easy. Use lobber the whole time.
On Beppi use lobbed first phase for east damage as he is always on the ground, just jump when he comes. Second phase use spreadshot to deal big damage and use the parryable dogs for a boost to use an EX. Third phase hide under him and use spreadshot unless you want to EX attack him, use lobbed EX and switch back. Last phase set a lobbed trap (shoot multiple lobbed directly up) and get ready. When he comes up unload every spread EX into and pray. When the penguins come out drop in a safe spot and shoot them with lobber. Stay to the left to always (or vey close to) hit him with spread and use EXs when you get them.

When I did
I kept watching videos of this game on YouTube and finally decided to buy it myself but now I'm struggling. Like really really struggling lol. I haven't really played platformer games before so that has something to do with it but it's also because I'm just not the best gamer in the world. Anyway, are there any basic tips you would have for a first time player? I play on PC and I've only beaten the two easiest bosses in the game so far (you can probably guess what those are) and I'm excited to do better but figured I'd try and ask for help.
Be patient and practice. This game is all about learning the bosses and mastering the controls. I'm really bad at games in general but I practiced a lot and I was able to finish the game on expert and get all achievements. Death in this game is the part of the learning. Good luck!
My biggest tip (cuphead is the first video game i've played) is to not overcorrect with movements. Especially for the bullet hell bosses, I've learned to just barely move to dodge and not overdo it. I've died over 1,600 times and I'm on the devil! It's possible!
I finally beat Cagney Carnation tonight and that felt like a huge accomplishment lol. I'm hoping I get done with the frogs soon, I can easily make it to the final level I'm just struggling a bit with timing on the slot machine stage.
I absolutely adore Cuphead's visual style, music, characters, as well as the cartoons it references and bought it for these. But I haven't played a videogame in 25+ years, and never one on PC. I can't get past the first level. Any tips for general gameplay that will allow me to master the game's mechanics?
Some things I am already trying/will try:
I haven’t finished the game yet and I’m on world 3, but if you don’t already you should always be shooting, try to use certain weapons for certain bosses (when you get enough coins), try staying calm, and for the first level, don’t freak out too much.It takes patience, and learning the patterns, so once you get the hang of the bosses and what they will do, it’ll be much easier
I would highly recommend getting some sort of controller to plug into your PC. The best charm to get in the beginning is the smoke bomb. Whenever you dash you will be invisible for a moment so you can't get hit. Another tip is to get the round a bout shot. If you aim away from the boss it will act like a boomerang and hit the boss so you can focus on dodging attacks. Another bonus is that the attack is useful in basically every stage you play. You will die a lot so don't worry about it when you do. The only other thing I can say is good luck, the game is hard.
Something that I’ve learned is that Cuphead requires patience. You’re probably not going to beat most levels after your first, fifth, or even tenth try. But that’s okay. Because you can learn about boss patterns or flaws in your setup from each defeat. Also I suggest getting the Smoke Bomb or another weapon first since having two weapons as early as possible is nice.
Always be shooting, most basic tip but also the most useful learn how to move, dodge, dash and parry all while holding down the x button, it’ll save a lot of time and you’ll beat the bosses way faster
How do you parry???
Press jump on a pink thing (usually projectile) while in air
Dashing and parrying are the two skills you need to learn the most. If you ever get stuck, it's likely that one of those can save you. Finally, always consider what guns and charm to use in each level
How do you parry???
By pressing jump in midair you'll do a "parry" move that let's you absorb pink attacks when you collide with them and add a card to your super meter. It's a timing thing to learn, but well worth getting good at
Remember, your monitor loves you for who you are. It is not laughing at you for failing a boss fight. Do not punch a hole through it.
Roundabout and lobber are the best along side with the invisible dash. Your first super is the only good one you get honestly. But that’s my opinion. Also just switch the controls for shoot to right bumper. Original controls make the game 10x more anal
Me who got all the achievements with default controls: 👁️👄👁️
I use left bumper for shoot and right bumper for dash
Console fs. PC controls are solid imo. But I play groove coaster on pc so I don’t think any game can annoy me when it comes to fast clicks on a keyboard lol
Huh? All I see is toast.
Just got it in the mail last night and spent three hours playing it this afternoon. This is far and away the hardest game I have ever played. Definitely would appreciate any tips especially what to use coins on. God bless anyone who has beaten this game, especially 100%.
Play a boss enough so you understand patterns. After that you can beat any boss with any weapon.
My 100% achievements playtrough took 2800 deaths.
Depends on how you want to play, and what boss you’re fighting. If you like to stay back and shoot from a far, like with ribby and croaks for instance, roundabout would be a good option. If you prefer to do higher dps and enjoy close combat (which can be harder) something like spread would be better. A lot of the fun of the game comes from trying different stuff and seeing what’s the most effective for any particular boss. But if you get bored or feel like you’re struggling with a specific boss, don’t feel bad about looking up the recommendations for that boss. Remember, you gotta have a great plan and then some! Hope you enjoy the journey :)
Thank you! I don’t really have a preference as far as style. Just whatever makes it easier to accomplish beating the stages/bosses. I only beat two in three hours. I think it’ll take some time to get used to the mechanics.
And that’s fine! When I was first starting out it was sooo hard but after a while you learn the movement and how to avoid stuff and it gets easier. Definitely get smoke bomb if you’re having trouble avoiding attacks, as it makes you immune to damage while you’re dashing. Helped immensely on my first play through
Definitely think and do research before spending coins cuz you only get so many . Chaser, spread and smoke charm are great
Yeah, I might have to restart
There’s detailed explanations on YouTube of locations of coins and if beat run and gun level without getting all coins you can go back to get them all
honestly. roundabout and spread or roundabout and crackshot got me thru most of the game
Ty
Get the improved dash asap. Also the roundabout shot is insane if you know how to use it
Yes, as we know, Cuphead is not an easy game. Mainly because of the boss fights. You gotta have skill for sure. This game really puts you to the test. I’ve been playing this since 2020 and maaan.. it feels damn good to get an S rank, especially one handed. Cuphead and Sekiro are the two games that really tests my skill. Are you a fan?
Maybe I should go into Super mario community and ask "who's a fan of Mario?"
Jokes aside, glad you enjoy the game and congratulations on S rank with 1 hand
lol I know that was dumb of me 😅 but yes, playing one handed isn’t too bad, but having to do two commands with one hand takes a lot of practice and focus. I appreciate it 💯
I think we all are a fan bud
It’s such a damn good, but challenging game for sure!
Yup, it's flipping amazing
One handed?! On the flower boss?! /j
Yup! Hated flower the most in isle one lol 😂
I love the game so much I got a 300% save file and all 42 achievements
Did you just go to the cuphead subreddit and ask who’s a fan of cuphead?
Yes I did. You never know. 😅
I'm just now getting my chance to do a playthrough of cuphead because I hadn't had access to any of the systems that it was on when it came out. I was dreading it because I don't like really hard games, but this is hard in a good way. this is fun hard. this isn't punishing hard like meat boy. this is I want to do better next time and I can't wait to go back in there and try again hard. it balances difficulty and fun perfectly. I'm surprised cuz I was expecting to put it on for a few minutes and drool over the graphics and then turn it off m because I was expecting a very punishing game but this is fun and challenging not rip your hair out, punch holes in the walls and get yourself evicted for screaming at the top of your lungs hard. though that may happen too because I've seen videos of people on YouTube doing that. but it's fun.
Well deserved of the popularity it achieved when it first came out.
yeah i was basically in the same situation as you (though i started being able to play cuphead for some years now, but at that time i never thought of it since it was too late, like years after it released) i was also always a fan of plataformers and remember watching all sort of content about the game when it came out in 2017. I started playing like 3 weeks ago, i think i just remembered it one day or something, ive been playin hell of a lot games recently so of course i had to try it after so much time of never playing it, i literally beat saltbaker yesterday and i finally leveled up the cursed relic to divine, now the only thing left for me is to defeat every boss in expert mode and get that 300%, i knew it was a great game, and after playing it i was exactly right.
I definitely think it's a fun great game I just don't know how much longer I'm going to last cuz I think it's more of a game than I can handle cuz I'm not a great gamer I just enjoy the hobby. I love Platformers there's some of my favorite genre video games. But I'll probably never stop playing it completely because it's just fun even if it's every once in awhile I go in there and mess around and then it's fun. Despite the fact that it's one of the hardest games I've ever played it is absolutely fun. Just to have a little more fun in the game I decided to look up and download a save file that was already 300% complete so I could kind of just go through and see what the rest of the game had to offer before I could get there myself
Welcome to your new obsession.
Definitely the kind of game you enjoy so much that you want to reward it by buying the DLC.
I love watching my plat vid for this. I was so locked in at the end I was just jumping around the falling chip perfectly and I love reliving that moment. I have no idea how many hours it took to finally beat him but it was a lot. Congrats 🎉
The fun thing is that I did that parry on the video by accident and so glad I did because it would have taken me out. I was so locked in that I didn't even noticed the super was charged
Don’t say that, it is that hard, u are very good playing and that’s it, I also got it 2 years ago, my 2nd favorite after Dark Souls 1
I just thought it would be harder because of all the boogeyman stories around it. But by no means it's a walk in the park
It’s mostly kids especially with how cuphead looks.
>Not as hard as the reputation it has.
Totally agree. I think it was the prefect level of difficulty for me.
I expected it to be way harder based on the stories i heard about it on release. It wasn't easy, but it wasn't some rage inducing impossible game either. Just a pleasant challenge
Exactly how I felt. Liked it so much that should be playing the DLC soon.
I think the dlc is a bit harder than base game, but nothing crazy. It was great
I’ve always wanted to go for it but always found it intimidating. How long did it take you?
Not OP but took me approx 20 hrs including dlc. If I were to redo this I think I could do it under 10 hrs as there is def some stuff to get used to at first but once you get a hang of the concept it's not too bad.
If you love a challenge go for it. It's not easy at all but once you get use to it, you'll get better amd better.
This game has 43 trophies: 24 bronze, 12 silver, 6 gold, and a platinum.
They are very hard (8/10) and take 25 - 35 hours to complete.

Title says it all. I got cuphead, and i wanted to know any tips for a newbie
don't ask this subreddit how to get an A+
but in all seriousness, if any of the bosses are hard, do them on simple mode, and if you beat them then after or later you can come back to them and do the boss on regular mode
But also know that you will need to complete them all on regular mode to unlock the ending.
I completed them all on simple mode and had to go back after realizing I couldn't unlock the last but until I finished all on regular.
It was somewhat easier the second go around becasue my skills had gotten better.
yeah
One boss a week, your sanity will thank you
LMAO brother
Do the mausoleums
Do you recommend a wireless switch pro controller? When playing the game? I am using the the joy control that comes with the console.
it doesn't really matter much, so whichever you're more comfortable with
The what?
these things. they give you Super EX's which you can use by pressing the EX button when you have 5 cards
Learn breathing exercises
For boss fight you should use a weapon that fits, and one that deal tons of damage. At example for beppy the clown (isle 2) you may use the roundabout, that makes the fight easier, and spread, to deal damage and make the fight shorter. "Damaging" weapons are usually spread, charged, and lobber.
Remember, more damage = shorter fight = less hits = S rank. :3
