Tokyo Ghoul: Manga vs Anime Differences

Overall Adaptation Quality

The consensus among fans is that the Tokyo Ghoul anime is a poor adaptation of the manga. While Season 1 is considered relatively faithful, subsequent seasons diverge significantly from the source material, leading to rushed storytelling and lackluster character development [1:1][2:1][5:1]. Many fans recommend reading the manga for a more complete and satisfying experience [1:2][5:4].

Storyline Changes

There are notable differences in the storyline between the manga and anime. In Season 1, the anime rearranges arcs and omits scenes crucial for character development and foreshadowing [1:1]. Season 2 takes an entirely different direction, with Kaneki not joining Aogiri and other major plot points altered or omitted [3:1][4:1]. The anime's version of Tokyo Ghoul:re is particularly criticized for its incomprehensible narrative due to condensed storytelling [2:5][3:3].

Character Development

The manga provides more in-depth character development compared to the anime. Important scenes that flesh out characters and their motivations are often skipped or poorly adapted in the anime [2:2][3:2]. For example, Takizawa's transformation is better explained in the manga, offering insights into his character that the anime fails to deliver [3:4].

Art and Emotional Impact

Fans praise Sui Ishida's art in the manga for its ability to convey emotions effectively, which is something the anime struggles to replicate [3:2]. The manga's detailed artwork enhances the emotional depth of pivotal scenes, such as Kaneki's torture by Jason, making them more impactful than their anime counterparts [3:2].

Recommendation

For those interested in Tokyo Ghoul, reading the manga is highly recommended over watching the anime. The manga offers a richer, more coherent narrative and superior character development [5:2][5:5]. If you enjoy the themes and story of Tokyo Ghoul, the manga will provide a more fulfilling experience.

Things that matter, not small nit-pick stuff mostly. I would look it up but don't feel like going through hours of websites honestly.

In season 1 they switched the order of the arcs, in addition to the removal of various scenes that develop the characters and foreshadow some stuff. The whole season 2, Kaneki never joined Aoigiri instead it has a different story, in the Anteiku raid, Touka doesn't even go there, Hide doesn't die and Kaneki doesn't carry him, in addition to that the manga actually shows the fight between Arima and Kaneki, and shows the aftermath of the whole thing, which sets up TG:re.

In TG:re the anime rushes the whole story and cuts character development, for example Mutsuki's backstory isn't shown.

Yeah, I highly recommend reading the manga, even if you're not a fan. The anime just failed to capture the great things from the manga.

If you had a hard time reading the manga, I recommend trying to playing the OST of the anime while reading. The music might help to concentrate and set up the mood and it's the great thing about the anime that I have no complaints.

Tokyo Ghoul manga better than anime ?

Posted by KrishnaP17 · in r/MangaCollectors · 6 years ago

So I just finished watching Tokyo Ghoul a couple days back (I know its quite late) since so many people were saying its amazing. However in all honesty I didn't really get it that much and found some scenes really hard to understand. Some of the parts were really cool though and the fights were amazing. I wanted to know if the first few volumes of the manga are worth getting along with RE ? Thanks

I'm reading the Manga right now (just finished volume 10 of 14) and watching the corresponding anime episodes as I go. The first half of the anime follows the manga fairly closely and has some stuff I liked more but does skip in some other places such as character development and pacing. The second half of the anime however makes some very large changes and while I still have a few volume/episodes to go it overall feels inferior to the manga.

The anime mixes up the ordering of events and leaves out information. Also suffers from lack of development in certain characters. First season of anime is still good but the show quickly goes down hill in season 2 (and 3/4 for RE). If you’re a fan of the anime read the manga for sure.

Alright so I just finished all 3 seasons of tokyo ghoul today and was happy how it ended but soon felt hella empty as I realized it was over. I haven't read the manga yet as my friends told me it was important to understand parts of the show. I'm prolly gonna read it but was wondering how different it is from the anime, since I've heard that most of season 2 is completely different from the manga? (Also does it explain how Takizawa transformed after the raid? I'm very interested in the character but felt like the anime didn't really show everything with Noro capturing him during the raid)

Please read the manga. Ishida's art draws out every emotion felt to their extreme. Notably, the Jason torture scene in the anime is much less impactful (crazy I know) when compared side by side to Ishida's original composition. The manga is truly art, art that the anime was not able to fully replicate.

For reference, Season 1 adapts 7 Volumes, Season 2 adapts 7 Volumes, RE Part 1 is 6 Volumes, and RE Part 2 is 10 Volumes...

Season 2 is entirely anime-original, Season 1 cuts out many character scenes, Season 3 adapts the least, and STILL needed to cut major plot relevant scenes which makes Part 2 a mess, which speaking of, Part 2 is 10 VOLUMES. The final volume is also the size of 2 Volumes, so it's more like 11. They couldn't fully adapt 6, and added an extra 5 on top of that for Part 2.

There is so much missing...

7 upvotes on reddit
Nangbaby · 4 months ago

>I'm very interested in the character

Then you definitely need to read the manga. Take it from someone who fell in love with him in in Root A having not even read the manga at the time. There's so much that the anime left out...and the :Re anime REALLY did him dirty (it was worse than Root A's changes).

> but felt like the anime didn't really show everything with Noro capturing him during the raid

While the manga is more detailed in many regards and does explore this issue more fully, I do have to say this point is shown in a flashback in the :Re anime, but due to the breakneck pace it probably wasn't memorable. That said, the conversion is one of those plot points that didn't need a explicit exposition as a watcher or reader should have been able to infer what happened from the visuals alone. Without too many spoilers, I'd say that while there are significant divergences between the manga and anime versions of events of the raid, the way it's presented is similar.

Yeah season 2 is completely different and is anime original.

I highly recommend reading the manga from start to end. Since even season 1 which is the considered the most faithful to the manga sacrifices a chunk of the story to stay within the 12 episodes. The manga does cover his transformation.

I started reading the manga after the anime and I am shocked

Posted by enginbeyefendi · in r/TokyoGhoul · 28 days ago

I finished Tokyo Ghoul and Tokyo Ghoul:re a couple weeks ago and I thought about reading the manga and I am at chapter 87 on the main manga.

It's so different. Instead of joining the aogiri, Kaneki breaks 103 bones of Touka's brother by beating him "half-to-death".

I haven't read the rest but if the main story is like this I am curious to see what's different in the Tokyo Ghoul:re manga.

Also can someone explain why it's so different? The manga storyline feels way better than that half-ass story season 2 had.

This isn't true. The manga author was the one that wanted a new story. The anime staff just couldn't follow it because the higher ups didn't let them deviate too much from the manga.

> I am curious to see what's different in the Tokyo Ghoul:re manga.

Story wise, nothing. It's the same story, however the anime removed a lot of scenes that give context to the story and explain what is hapening. The anime was basically a summary of the manga.

> Also can someone explain why it's so different?

The differences in season 2 are due to the manga author wanting the anime to be different from the manga. He even wrote a full script for the new story, however the higher ups didn't let the anime staff deviate too much from the manga, so they mixed the new story with various things from the manga, which led to a story that has an identity crisis of not knowing if it's the manga or a new story, and it makes no sense.

They should have just sticked to the manga once the higher ups didn't let them go fully original.

Manga to Anime disparity

I am one of the newcomers to TG due to the exposure through Dead By Daylight. I've thoroughly enjoyed the few episodes of the anime I've seen and already read 44 chapters of the manga but there's a serious difference between the events of both and it's insane. Should I even watch the anime all the way through or does it get worse?

What really threw me off was how soon the anime has Tsukiyama show up. I thought it was insane how different they are almost immediately, it's like the manga creator wasn't involved in the process at all. I don't watch much anime or know the adaptation process so I'm not sure if it's normal for them not to be but if they weren't, that was a mistake.

9 upvotes on reddit
Nangbaby · 6 months ago

In the anime both the Tsukiyama and Mado arcs are switched, with a few anime-only inventions to bridge the gap.

I don't think that the creator was completely unaware of this change, and it flows well enough in the anime that I didn't even see anything "wrong" when I watched it.

LaPapaVerde · 6 months ago

Fun fact, The manga creator agreed to make a original story for the anime so you aren't wrong in a certain way

Yes, I can consider it as "normal" based on my experiences when consuming manga/anime simultaneously. Overall, it is rare to have an faithful anime adaptation, but in the scale of well - known manga, TG anime adaptation is " not normal"

I'd say continue simultaneously enjoying the manga and anime until you reach the end of Season 1 of the anime (I believe that's around the mid 60's mark of the manga? You'll know when you get there)

From there, just stick exclusively to the manga

The anime gets worse...but...if the videos I seen or anything to go by, the DBD gameplay appears to be heavily influenced by the anime in terms of presentation, so you may not want to abandon the anime at least until after the first 12 episodes.

I’ve been a big fan of Tokyo Ghoul for a long time, I’ve watched the anime in its entirety about 5 times, I was wondering if the manga is worth buying and reading, I’m not much of a reader but I’m sure that considering my love for the series then I would make it work. I know that the show doesn’t compare to the manga with most of the plots skipped over in :re especially. I’d love to hear people’s honest reviews on the manga and how it compares to the show. I feel like I can answer this because I just did the same thing. I am also not a big reader but it’s pretty easy reading. I’m a big Tokyo Ghoul fan and I’ve also watched the anime a handful of times. I just bought and read through all the manga. Finished it 2 days ago. It’s is 100% worth it. It only improves upon the anime. Imo It’s just a better telling of the story. It has more detail, expands on different points, and shows characters in a different light. The changes from the anime to manga are all better than what’s in the anime imo. Which is partly why people say it’s so much better. It doesn’t ruin the anime for me, but I’d rather now reread it than watch it. I hope you go for it, if you’re that big a fan you’ll love it.

It's not only better but it's also ANOTHER story. The anime did a weird thing where second season is an original story and then the next seasons tried to come back to adapt the manga but they never filled the gap that not adapting what'd be the second season left. So you have an original story in the middle (which you can like or dislike) and then an incomplete and rushed sequel that is :RE anime, which isn't even very faithful btw they needed to change some things bcs there were too few episodes.

Simply put, the anime skips a great deal (and changes everything between Kaneki’s escape from Jason and the beginning of :re ). Without the things that are skipped, the story loses a lot of emotional depth. You would also be missing out on some of the most intense manga panels put to page, which the anime never managed to fully capture.

Main issue is it gets very confusing for anime-only viewers in later seasons. Season 2 in particular made some major changes to the story and skipped some important plot points which set up the plot for season 3, and then season 3 doesn't adjust events to fit the changes season 2 made and doesn't explain anything. The pacing is also quite rushed, it's hard to keep track of things later on when there are so many characters and events happening (on top of the actual continuity issues making things confusing).

Despite the issues though, if it's a choice between watching the anime and not checking out the series at all, then I'd say watch it. While I strongly recommend the manga over the anime, if you absolutely refuse to read the manga then give the anime a watch.

Side note: For the anime-only watch order I recommend: Season 1 -> Tokyo Ghoul Jack -> Season 2 -> Tokyo Ghoul Pinto -> Season 3 (keep in mind unofficial sites split season 3 into two separate seasons). Jack and Pinto are OVA episodes, they might be listed as their own season depending on the website.

The OVAs are prequels to the main story, but they introduce characters that appear in the main story and watching them at those points should help things more enjoyable when they do appear. Plus it also helps space out the seasons enough so you feel a bit of the break between events that viewers had when they were airing without actual taking a break from watching.

3 upvotes on reddit
idontlikeburnttoast · 4 months ago

Yes. The reasons?

S1 is fine.

Season 2 was meant to develop the main plotline and the main characters and build the correct bonds. None of that happened and essentially nothing really happened in s2 except a load of overly dramatic and non-emotional scenes.

Then season 3 assumes you learnt all that and a bit more and assumes the mangas timeline again despite season 2 changing so many original event. Theres literally a flashback scene to a major plotline that only happened in the manga.

And then s3 cuts so much content anyway. The main plotline isnt even told to you and you dont understand what the main plotline even was or why things happened or people were alive.

Do NOT watch the anime. It's just a bunch of animation with no story.

25 upvotes on reddit
Oblivion_3101 · 4 months ago

It’s pretty damn bad in comparison to manga like entire seasons worth of chapters were left out and they said screw the source material let’s do our own thing yet tie into endgame situations without the build up of the manga but you could enjoy it as it’s own thing if you’d like.

The anime gets a bit edgy at times however.

Season one is pretty solid, most fans will agree on that. You lose some of the nuance from the manga, but not too much. Season 2 they changed a major plot beat but still did all the events from the manga. It's very weird and frankly pretty garbage. The fights are still neat, but the story is barely comprehensible. Season 3 picks back up, but it's not pretty out there in terms of content. Lots of new plots beats come and go so fast you sometimes end up wondering what any of it was for. If you want to experience the story of Tokyo Ghoul, the manga is probably the way to go, just be warned that the manga art is...busy.

The manga is way better and the only way to know the full story.

Season 2 is anime original and season 3 ignored that and followed the manga, but they never adapted the real story that should have been season 2 despite following various plot points from that. You're expected to read the manga to know what happened. Also, season 1 and 3 rushed the whole story and removed a lot of stuff to the point I don't think it's possible to understand what was happening. The anime is a shit show, I recommend to just drop it and read the whole manga.

I feel like the anime is so incomplete that at the end it doesn't make any sense. It was also rushed because the prod agency wanted to quit and spend time on other animes. Tokyo Ghoul first two seasons of the anime were kinda okay I guess (thanks to the animation and the ost) but Tokyo Ghoul:re was (I have to be honest) irrevelant and unsatisfying..

The manga is, to me, a true masterpiece. The story is complete and every chapter answer readers' awaited questions. The panels are incredible (because the art style is) and each character has their own personality development. I completely recommend the manga to anyone who liked the anime because it's way better. And lately I've been reading it again listening to the anime ost !

The manga is great. It comes in two parts: Tokyo Ghoul and its continuation Tokyo Ghoul RE. Would recommend reading both series before watching the anime. This is because the manga series remains at a good to godlike consistency while the anime starts off great and then drops of the chart into shit. And thats just Tokyo ghoul season 1 and two. The anime adaptation for RE is soooo shit it genuinely is one of the worst anime’s ever. So just read the manga and if its for you keep reading it and then read RE for the full story. Then if you want watch the anime. The manga is so so so much better. Hope this helps :)

Tokyo Ghoul manga vs anime differences

Key Differences Between Tokyo Ghoul Manga and Anime

  1. Storyline Adaptation:

    • The anime adaptation diverges significantly from the manga, especially in the second season ("Tokyo Ghoul √A"), which introduces original content not found in the manga.
    • The manga provides a more detailed and nuanced storyline, including character development and plot arcs that are either condensed or omitted in the anime.
  2. Character Development:

    • In the manga, characters like Kaneki and Touka have more in-depth backstories and development, which helps to flesh out their motivations and relationships.
    • The anime tends to rush through character arcs, leading to less emotional impact and understanding of their journeys.
  3. Pacing:

    • The manga has a slower pacing, allowing for more buildup and exploration of themes, while the anime often compresses events, leading to a faster but sometimes confusing narrative.
  4. Art Style:

    • The manga features Sui Ishida's unique art style, which includes intricate details and a darker tone that enhances the horror elements.
    • The anime, while visually appealing, may not capture the same level of detail and atmosphere as the manga.
  5. Ending:

    • The manga has a definitive conclusion that differs from the anime's ending, which can leave viewers feeling unsatisfied or confused if they only watch the anime.

Recommendation: If you're a fan of deep storytelling and character development, I recommend reading the manga for a more comprehensive experience. The anime is visually engaging and can be enjoyable, but it lacks the depth and detail that the manga offers. If you choose to watch the anime, consider reading the manga afterward to fully appreciate the story.
