TL;DR
Comedy and Exaggerated Emotions
One of the defining features of "Ouran High School Host Club" is its comedic style and exaggerated emotional expressions. Several anime capture this essence, such as Kaguya-sama: Love is War, which combines comedy with psychological elements and over-the-top emotional displays [3:1]
[5:1]. Monthly Girls' Nozaki-kun is another recommendation that shares a similar comedic tone and character interactions
[4:2]
[5:4].
Romantic Comedy and School Settings
For those who enjoyed the romantic comedy aspect and the high school setting of Ouran, Kaichou wa Maid-sama is frequently recommended. It offers a mix of romance and comedy within a school environment, much like Ouran [2:1]
[5:1]. Special A also fits this category, featuring a prestigious school setting and comedic rivalry between characters
[5:1].
Slice of Life and Friendship Dynamics
If you're looking for anime that focus on close friendships and slice-of-life dynamics, Fruits Basket and Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun are excellent choices. These shows emphasize character development and interpersonal relationships, providing a heartwarming experience akin to Ouran [2:1]
[1:2].
Unique Recommendations
For viewers interested in exploring different genres while maintaining a comedic flair, The Disastrous Life of Saiki K. offers a blend of supernatural elements and humor [3:3]. Additionally, Lovely Complex provides exaggerated emotions and comedic scenarios, making it another suitable option for fans of Ouran
[5:5].
These recommendations should provide a range of options for anyone seeking anime similar to "Ouran High School Host Club," whether you are drawn to its comedy, romantic elements, or character dynamics.
I love this show. Like literally everything about it. The voice acting is great, the translation is great, the charecters are funny and unlike almost every other anime I’ve watched, I actually care about them.
The homosexual moa is funny and tastefully done and is honestly really cute.
But I can’t seem to find any show that hits the same spot, other than Kill la Kill for some reason.
Any recommendations for similar shows? Or rather shows that have a sense of close friendship, like “Friends” or that old cartoon “6teen”?
Maybe Gekkan Shouko Nozaki-kun? It's got the same vibe but without the rich people antics. The characters definitely care for each other
It's got a K-Drama vibe to it. What you need to look for in anime are reverse harem shows or high-school K-Dramas
It's a different setting but Azumanga Daioh is very hilarious
Hi Qwerty177, it seems like you might be looking for anime recommendations! I have changed the flair on your post to indicate that, but if I'm wrong, feel free to change it back!

Ouran is definitely better, but you might like the comedy of Kiss Him, Not Me! or Princess Jellyfish.
For some close friendships and characters you care about, look to slice of life dramas and/or romance. Some examples:
Ok so im SUPER new to anime (watched less than 10) but i really loved ouran host club all recommendations would be great with a small description
Kiss him not me
Monthly girls nozaki kun
What did you like about it? The reverse Harlem? The comedy? The art style? I don’t mean to picky, but it would be great if you can give context.
Here’s a few that are similar by a few of the points I just mentioned:
Fruits Basket
Kaicho wa Maid-Sama
Gekkan Shojo Nozaki-kun
I think you’ll enjoy these, since you liked Ouran Host Club a lot. Enjoy!
Just looking for something like Ouran High School Host Club preferably on Netflix or Hulu
If by that you mean funny reverse harems then {HameFura} and {Dame x Prince Anime Caravan}
If you don't care about gender or love interests, but want smart MC surrounded by their silly friends then {The Disastrous Life of Saiki K.}

There’s this person posting bits of Ouran Highschool Host Club on tiktok. This show had so much top tier comedy I just love it. I’ve watched Ouran 3 times already. It’s a comfort anime. What other animes do you recommend that have that same level of comedy in them? I’m willing to try different genres.
I haven't counted but I've easily rewatched Ouran over 20 times at least, I'm insane for that show haha
I think the closest I get in vibes is Monthly Girls Nozaki-kun.
If you don't mind trying other genres, The Devil is a Part Timer (just the first season... I can't really recommend the rest) is also really funny and tackles low income humour
Fellow Ouran stan here. My next two favorite shows in that same vein thus far have been Toradora! and Kaguya-Sama: Love is War. On my list from when I made a similar inquiry once, but still unwatched for now, is Monthly Girls' Nozaki-kun.
How about Yamato Nadeshiko Shichihenge from the same era of Ouran Highschool Host Club?
Ever since her crush rejected her by insulting her appearance, Sunako Nakahara has been a shut-in with a hatred for beauty, embracing all things morbid and occult-related. She is sent to live in her aunt's mansion which, to her dismay, she'll share with four exceedingly handsome boys her age. Furthermore, her flighty aunt has made a deal with these boys that in exchange for living there rent-free, they are to turn Sunako into a proper lady by the time she returns from a trip around the world.
Isn’t that The Wallflower? I watched this one ages ago and it was funny! I’ll have to give it a rewatch. Thanks.
Kaguya-sama
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya - A comedy about a high school club.
If live-action is ok, you might like Hana Kimi, which is based on a manga. Similar to Ouran, it's about a high school girl who disguises herself as a boy.
I'm about to finish reading OHSHC and I really want some recs that are similar in terms of comedy, characters, and animation style e.g. heavily exaggerated emotions.
Are there any anime/mangas that are similar to this or will I just have to re-read OHSHC over and over again lol?
I second Special A and Maid-sama.
If you want something even more romance-heavy I would also suggest Kimi no Todoke.
If you want something with basically zero romance but otherwise similar I would suggest Ramen Fighter Miki.
Meika-San Can't Conceal Her Emotions is good and has exaggerated emotions and comedy but not quite the exaggerated anatomy. It is probably a bit closer to Maid-sama.
S.A Special A Class - A comedy romance anime/manga that you might love.
Kaichou wa Maid-sama - Same vibe with OHSHC & S.A.
Kaguya-sama, Love is War - Also have this vibe.
I've been thinking about reading Maid-sama, it seems really good.
Ty for the recs!!
You're welcome!
The thing about the animes/mangas I recommended to you, all have some things in common. Like a highly educated school for rich kids, with one of the mc's being rich and the other poor who has to work hard for things. It's also comedy with over exageration. So I'm sure you'll definitely like them.
Monthly Girls Nozaki-kun would probably be the closest I can think of. Not too much "lol rich people" humor, but its very exaggerated but pretty consistently funny.
i honestly love any show that has super exaggerated emotions.
ty for the rec, i'll defo check it out
Lovely Complex has the wacky, exaggerated emotions and the anime came out around the same time. The comedy is very over the top too.
Hana Kimi I could recommend
I’m looking for an anime that’s kinda like Ouran or Nozaki-kun. Chaotic, flamboyant, and preferably satirical. Idk something that gives off similar vibes lol
Shoujo is preferable, but I’m fine with anything else.
Not exactly similar but romantic killer and wotakoi give me the same kick as nozaki-kun. simikar to ouran maybe something like special or my little monster
I second the romantic killer suggestion
Oooh thanks
Princess Jellyfish!!!! It's like a reverse ouran!!
I read that one a while ago! It’s great ^^
Kamisama Kiss has some of the same goofy energy to me
I’ve been meaning to watch that one! Thanks!
Pretty Boy Detective Club starts with a similar premise to Ouran, and it just a zany ride. Both are definitely on my favorites list.
Sounds fun!
It really is underrated in my opinion! It’s a show about aesthetics, and the production matches that. Bones really out in a good effort here. If you need a hook, check out the op
https://youtu.be/jMAqzd9CgQM?si=f61Z_o6T2FrIBoX7.
Both endings are also great!
Yuri on Ice?
I tried, but I couldn’t get into it :(
Hello friends, I need some good recommendations for anime. I feel like ever since Ouran High School Host club I am just constantly searching for something similar that has a good balance of romance and comedy. Would be very happy if you could share any good animes you might wanna recommend.
Lovely complex
Special A
Maid-sama
Super Gals!
Skip beat
Wotakoi
I would recommend the Wallflower - about a shut-in who is sent to live at her aunt’s house where she’ll live with four other boys.
Monthly Girls Nozaki-kun is very funny, but the male lead is extremely dense.
Is the one you mentioned good? I'm thinking of seeing
Kiss Him, Not Me
kiss him, not me
I love OHHC and I've watched it through multiple times, hate that they never made more seasons though 😭 can anyone recommend another show like it to get me my fix?
The quintessential Quintuplets is pretty good, if u haven't seen it or even know about it, it's basically OHHC but reversed genders and is pretty good.
{Kamisama Kiss}
There’s nothing quite like it, but I agree that there’s a lot of overlap with Kamisama Kiss in terms of fans. Definitely a good rec.
I've seen some people compare it to Kaguya-sama.
School Rumble
Kamisama Kiss
Monthly Girls’ Nozaki-kun
If you don't mind the art, Paradise Kiss is sorta similar
I finished watching Ouran High School Host Club yesterday and I loved it. I've always loved shoujos (though I've only watched magical girl shoujos. I'm a huge Sailor Moon and Card Captor Sakura fan) , but I tend to have a hard time finding some that don't annoy me because I always stumble upon two issues: a childish, damsel-in-distress protagonist, and REALLY weird relationships.
I loved OHSHC because Haruhi is a smart girl that isn't dependent on the hosts, and the hosts / her love interests are DECENT PEOPLE. That, and the comedy aspect, I love it!! I think the issue is that I haven't searched for more shoujos. I'm sure there are a ton like this. The thing is, I'd like to find a wholesome and funny shoujo with a good main character, decent love interests / side characters, and a good story!! Or even a dramatic one with, again, a good protagonist and decent side characters.
Here are a few series that mix comedy and wholesomeness, with well-written characters:
And not necessarily comedies, but these are also worth checking out:
Also there's a manga from the 90s-early 2000s, Hana Kimi, that's getting an anime adaptation (release date TBA). You might want to check it out when it comes out (to me it's a bit similar to Ouran, without being exactly the same)
edit: looking at other comments, I didn't realize you might've been asking for anime specifically, hopefully if you're open to read manga you'll give these series a try! There are just so many gems that will never get an anime adaptation :')
Aside from the series I already mentioned, keep an eye out for the anime adaptation of Mechanical Marie coming out this fall, it's a comedy that looks very promising (I've yet to read the manga).
Kamisama Hajimemashita hits the spot.
Nanami really have to develop her own skills in order to express her romantic feelings. And the magical world is SO dynamic. The anime doesn’t do the manga justice. Though the theme song slaps, the magic lies in the manga
My favorite manga is Ran to Haiiro no Sekai thooooo it can only compare to Ouran when it comes to how it hits the heart. The story beats are completely different!
And then one I think you would truly love is Island Manager! I read this manga just a few months ago and it is now my second favorite manga. It’s hilarious (lol funny which is rare for a manga) and the romance is just drool-worthy
Ran and the Gray World (second title you mention, published in full by Viz, seinen from one of my favourite magazines, art is gorgeous!!) is a really fascinating title but I'm not sure if it quite fits OP's request; at least one of the relationships is definitely "really weird."
So true. I do think it elicits feelings of beautiful relief that I felt while watching Ouran Host Club though
And for my first read, I was so taken by the magic that the “other stuff” went right over my head
I second Island Manager!!! Soooo funny and cute and a very unique story!
In English its Kamisama Kiss, which is avaliable in print, possibly at a library near you.
Special a where girl is hyperfocused on beating the ml and is a genuis too.
Maid sama where fl is also top of her school and takes no crap from anyone.
Both of these series tend to show the girls getting beaten/outdone by the guys though, so as "strong/smart/capable" female leads go, they were really frustrating for me to read.
I mean yeah but the point is ppl want male love interests to be better that's why.
Even in ohshc tamaki x haruhi isn't that popular and ppl prefer kyoya or mori more with haruhi. Kyoya and mori come close to usui/kei personality.
But SA and maid sama had excellent female protagonist and male leads didn't hinder them but supported them a lot. That's a departure from usual shy/clumsy female leads.
I'm guessing you mean anime recs? Most of these I've watched quite loong ago, so take these with a pinch of salt.
Skip Beat is a showbiz, mostly acting-focused anime that has a pretty fiery and headstrong MC. It's also the only shojo anime from my childhood I went to read the manga for. I really liked it. (It's not finished)
Kaicho wa Maid sama is set in a high school. MC is pretty cool, smart, a bit of a tsundere actually, and treated like a girl crush for some of the other female characters, if I remember correctly. It does have some old shojo pitfalls, though, and ML is a bit hit or miss for people.
Hanasakeru Seishonen. This one is... uh. Well, I don't know how to explain it, because I remember it being weirdly paced. But I also remember liking the MC. She was written like a larger than life type of person, which I think is usually a personality type that falls on male characters. She's not all that relatable (like the other extreme end from possibly poor everyday girl), and I've seen people call her Mary Sueish, but eh, I liked her.
Akatsuki no Yona. Just watch it. It's great. 🤧 Historical fiction, fantasy setting, with great characters.
Since you mentioned magical girls, you might have seen it, but I'm saying it just in case, Kamikaze Kaito Jeanne. It had that magical girl, monster of the week, rivals(?) to lovers thing going on. I couldn't tell you where to watch it nowadays.
And technically-not-shojo by rules of where it was published, but the Apothecary Diaries. The MC is really smart and just great, honestly.
Lovely complex (more romance driven) and Skip Beat (set in the acting world, but only has one season, the manga's much much longer) kinda give me the same vibe as OHSHC.
If you're not familiar with shojos, Akatsuki no Yona is a bit more dramatic (mostly adventure focused) but also has only one season and the manga's way longer.
guys can you suggest me animes like that literally all the guys falls for the female lead, and also with great ost too just like in the kamisama kiss... also 2000s vibes and drawing style... I already watched fruits basket, maid sama, ao haru ride, skip beat, itazura na kiss. and it would be better if its not only 1 season cause I can't get enough 😩
Saiunkoku monogatari
Hanasakeru Seishounen
Fushigi yuugi
Brothers conflict
La corda doro
Ayashi no ceres
Shugo Chara
thank you!! does female lead chose anyone at the end tho?
In Hanasakeru Seishounen, Fushigi Yuugi, Ayashi no ceres and Saiunkoku monogatari the female MC has a final partner. In the other ones she doesn't officially start dating with someone, but there is always one guy who has strong hints to be her main love interest.
kaichou-wa maid sama fruits basket special a ao haru ride kimi no todoke kiss him not me clannad wotakoi horimiya my dress up darling
oh I watched those too!! totally in love with ao haru ride and kimi ni todoke
god i am the biggest die-hard fan of maid sama, i have yet to find a ML i like more than usui
Kiss Him Not Me is a great one. MC is super into BL so instead of messing around with her reverse harem she just tries to get them to do gay shit with each other
Romantic Killer
omg its also one of my favs! still waiting for the new season its been years!!
Sadly, I think there’s no season 2. I heard that season 1 is where the manga ended 😞
vampire knight
Wish they'd make a second season of Ouran host club... but I liked Special A & Yona of the Dawn too
