Overview of Popular Songs
The music landscape in 2023 has been met with mixed reviews, with some listeners expressing disappointment over the year's offerings. However, several songs have stood out and garnered positive attention. Among these, Caroline Polachek's "Desire I Want To Turn Into You" was highlighted as a favorite album [3:1]. SZA's "SOS" was praised for its unique blend of R&B elements and relatable themes
[3:2].
Notable Tracks
Several tracks have been frequently mentioned across discussions as standout songs of 2023:
Emerging Artists and Trends
The pop scene in 2023 saw contributions from emerging artists like yeule and CMAT, whose songs "dazies" and "Where Are Your Kids Tonight?" respectively, were appreciated by listeners [4:1]
[4:4]. The year also witnessed a trend towards nostalgic sounds reminiscent of previous decades, as noted in some pop songs that evoke 80s vibes
[5:12].
Listener Demographics and Preferences
Interestingly, the demographic focus of pop music in 2023 seemed to target younger audiences, particularly teens and young adults. This was reflected in the popularity of artists like Sabrina Carpenter and Chappell Roan, who successfully captured the attention of this age group [5:1]
[5:2]. Despite this focus, pop music remains accessible and enjoyable to a broader audience, proving that fun and catchy tunes can transcend age barriers
[5:8].
Overall, while opinions on the quality of 2023's pop music vary, certain songs and albums have undeniably made their mark and continue to resonate with listeners across different demographics.
I think we all agree that 2023 was horrible for music but to change it up a bit I'm gonna post the only good mainstream songs of 2023. It's not a long list because music was just so bad in 2023. Here they are in no particular order:

It's gonna be a good year in 2024 for music if I have anything to do with it.
Are you a famous singer or something?
These songs just prove that this decades culture is basically an extension of the 2010s. Like half the artists on this list are core 2010s artists.
In 2013-2014 there was still some lingering artists of the 2000s but hopefully by later this year or 2025 we will have some new artists and sounds
Like 5% lingering core 2000s artists at that point.
Whereas in the 2020s its more like 50%.
I found 2020/2021/2022 better for music somehow
Oh yeah 2020 - 2022 was great

I'm kinda surprised Electricity got a higher score than One Kiss!
Be the One out of the top 10 oh HELLLL NOO
(i didn’t vote)
If you and me knew to vote it would have ranked 😔
I also forgot to vote so its also my fault her best song didn't rank 🤦♀️
Nooo justice for Happy for You, her best song
Boys Will Be Boys getting exactly one vote for 10th place is so funny, thank you to that person!
Glad to see that Radical Optimism got some love. I hate how it's routinely tagged as Dua's flop album when it really is a solid pop album with some fun bops.
Also sad to see Be The One fall out of the top ten, even though I'm part of the problem and didn't vote for it, lol.
SZA - SOS:
RIYL (Recommended If You Like): Getting mad at your man for cheating on you in your dreams; being “wifey” even if you’re not a girlfriend; R&B with both harp and 808s; Hannah Montana; immaculate and conversational melodies; running up your therapy bill
BYE.
Tbh Nobody Gets Me is a hannah Montana S4 song with curses in it.
I believe they run from Dec-June. A friend writes for Pitchfork here and there… let me ask them. 💀
I guess if the end-of-year list comes out in November, it makes sense that the next list picks up in December
Desire I Want To Turn Into You by Caroline Polachek is my fav album so far
can't decide between caroline lana and kesha the girls showed out this year 😭😭
Those are my top 2 as well!
Yep, album of the year so far
The production is A+, her vocals are on point, and she pulled Dido out of hiding.
She wins.
The concert was soooo good. The way she just sold every song, every beat was accounted for. Just blew me away
I saw her as an opener for Dua and she's an amazing vocalist 😍😍😍😍
Not the vibrators for Jessie Ware 💀

Weak In Your Light by Nation of Language
Welcome To My Island by Caroline Polachek
Free Yourself by Jessie Ware
Not Strong Enough by Boygenius
Free yourself was last year, amazing song tho
It’s on an album that came out this year so it counts imo
CMAT shoutout, hell yeah. More of a “Stay for Something” guy myself
Honestly most of the songs from that record could be on my list. Full of bangers
I wasn't all that hyped about the new LDR album, except for A&W, which immediately became my new favorite LDR song. And, yes, probably favorite of the year.
I love lana but ocean blvd is probably one of my least favorite albums of hers.
I kinda find it weird that people are now nominating her and giving her tons of credit for all her work. This album isn’t nearly as good as her others.
yeule - dazies
Wednesday - Chosen to Deserve
Carly Rae Jepsen - Shy Boy
Sufjan Stevens - Shit Talk
L'Rain - Pet Rock
Underscores - Girls Like Us (Locals)
Joanna Sternberg - I've Got Me
Lana Del Rey - A&W
Palehound - The Clutch
Kara Jackson - no fun/party
If you were in the intended demographic (teen/young adult female or similar), it must've been a bop year. The teams behind these artists really nailed the formula. Expect the next 3-4 years to sound exactly like these songs, though, as other teams try to capitalize on the meta. Good ol' pop music, eh?
this is interesting to me because i am a teen girl but until about last year i was the kind of person that didn’t listen to pop music really but some of these new songs from people like sabrina and chappell really got me into pop music.
Pretty much, anyone who thinks music has stagnated or whatever doesn't understand that music sells to young people first, and the crop of young people is a revolving door. They can just keep rehashing the same stuff forever because the customers are always being born. Regardless of that, last year was a bop for pop music.
Expect people 15-20 years from now saying these were all fire...
People are praising Despacito today. It's ridiculous.
you’re the first person I’ve seen even mention despacito in a looong time
I am so far outside of their target demo, and I adored these bops. Music can be fun. That’s okay.
If it’s a bop, it’s a bop. Doesn’t matter if the singer is 20 or 60.
This isn't insight. Pop stands for popular. It's what people like.
It’s better than other pop songs, especially the Camilla Cabello song “I luv it”
im pretty locked in on pop music and hits i’d like to say and i had never even heard of this song and god is it bad
I loathe Beautiful Things as well. That buildup and chorus just grate at my ears
It’s crazy how half of these pop songs on this video sound like total 80s knockoffs lmao
Welcome to the reveal of the Top 100 Tracks of 2024, as voted by our subreddit!
We had a total of 304 people submit votes this year, which we compiled into the final list that we are revealing today. Remember, any one artist can only have a maximum of THREE songs make the final list (not including features).
The reveal will start about an hour after this post goes up, at 12:00 PM EST. We will be listening to all the songs that made the list from #100 to #1 together in the video-sharing site Queup. You don’t need to have a Queup account to watch along, but we encourage you to create one so you can talk with us in the chat! We will also be revealing the songs one-by-one in this thread, each with a blurb written by one of our many amazing writeup volunteers. We are going to be listening to all 100 songs in full, so this will be a LONG event (6-7 hours). Please pop in and out as you are able, but definitely try to tune in for the big top 10 reveal!
While we wait, remember to vote in the "anti-vote" poll, if you haven’t already. This entirely optional and entirely unofficial poll asks what song you would remove a vote from if you could (which, to be clear, you cannot actually). We will close the voting at Top 10 and post the winner (loser?) after the reveal is over.
Once again, HERE is the link to join us in the reveal Queup!
P Le
One of 3 Brooke Candy voters, and one of 4 or 5 Arooj Aftab voters. Represent!
Sole voter for Rêve, Hannah Khemoh, Britti and Spice by the looks of it
Seeing Kali and Rachel on that list made me so genuinely happy
DEATH AND ROMANCE 🗣️🗣️🗣️🗣️🗣️
I am more than happy to see Yves, Loosemble and ARTMS here but boy this list was a mess. I see glimpses of incredible music mixed up with tiktok slops and generic radio plays added just because they charted and like… What is the criteria exactly? Why are we putting Camilla Cabello next to Madgalena Bay? Gracie Abrams over Coraline Polachek and Doechii?.. We have Lunch from Billie and not Chihiro or Blue? Same with Kendrick, the most generic pics out of incredible album with golden songs that also charted.
Edit: I just realized it was a subs’ choice list and not an receipt from some article.
Let's make it a genre diverse thread. :) You can also share your Top 10.
