Top Tools for App Prototyping

TL;DR

  • Figma: Highly recommended for its features and free resources.
  • Adobe XD: Popular for detailed animations and transitions.
  • http://Proto.io: Drag-and-drop interface with ready-to-use templates.
  • ProtoPie: Excellent for creating micro-interactions.

Figma

Figma is frequently mentioned as a top choice for app prototyping. It is praised for being free to use, offering robust features, and having an extensive range of plugins [1:3][3:2][4:3]. Figma's collaborative nature allows teams to work together in real-time, making it ideal for projects that require input from multiple stakeholders. It's also noted for its ease of use and suitability for both high and low-fidelity prototypes [5:1].

Adobe XD

Adobe XD is another popular tool among designers. It offers powerful prototyping capabilities, especially for creating detailed animations and transitions [5:1]. While some users prefer Adobe XD for personal projects due to its user-friendly interface [4:2], others debate whether it will overtake Sketch as the industry standard [4:4].

http://Proto.io

http://Proto.io is highlighted for its drag-and-drop functionality, which makes it accessible for those who may not be familiar with more complex design software like Photoshop or Sketch [1:1]. It is particularly useful for creating interactive prototypes using native iOS and Android components, allowing for effective user testing and feedback collection.

ProtoPie

For high-fidelity prototypes and micro-interactions, ProtoPie stands out as a favorite. It is known for its ability to create realistic interactions without requiring code, making it a powerful tool for designers looking to simulate real-world app behavior [5:2][5:5].

Other Notable Mentions

ORIGINAL POST

What are the leading free or paid prototyping tools you are using? Looking for component based prototyping that enables drag and drop iOS and Android design elements to create an interactive prototype app for user testing and feedback.

I dont know how to build screens using Photoshop or Sketch and want to build user journeys using native iOS and Android components.

Best app prototyping tool for mobile?

Posted by jssmith42 · in r/UI_Design · 3 years ago

Figma has a mobile app but not really for building designs, just for viewing.

I know an iOS app called DetailsPro that’s pretty good.

Any other good app design tools to be used on iPhone?

Thank you

Best is subjective, but Adobe Comp is pretty good on both high and low fidelity mock ups. I really like how you can draw out common ui wireframe elements (such an x inside a box) and it will create a clean element for you that you can edit and resize.

However, if you want to steer away from Adobe (or just try out others to see which works best for you) I’d also recommend Marvel - design and prototype. I’ve used it the most.

Looks like Adobe Comp is being discontinued and has been removed from the app stores.

Mobile app prototyping tool recommendations?

Posted by sambarguy · in r/Entrepreneur · 4 years ago

Looking for something

  1. Cheap
  2. Easy & intuitive to use

Too many search results to sift through, so I figured I would ask people who have prototyped a few app business ideas to brainstorm product-market fit, to do the same thing.

Thanks in advance!

Figma and Adobe XD are both great and have many free resources.

Actually, you can also use slides (ex. google presentations). It will still a valid prototype, but with less interaction. You can add more explanation text though.

If you're trying to do a more "useful" prototype, you can try Flutter or Svelte. They are both directed for production already (Flutter specially for mobile apps and Svelte for websites). They both are too fast and allow you to launch and try without much burden.

I'm creating a prototype in Flutter and its taking almost 4 months already... But this is because I'm creating a kind of simulator and the simulation logic is getting me mad lol. Flutter itself is helping as much as possible.

Please ignore what you don't understand :/. My English is rusty.

Adobe XD and Figma are really good, free tools. Personally I prefer Adobe XD for my own projects.

Sketch is also highly popular, but it's paid, and I have never tried it out myself, so I can't say for sure. Also, it's Mac-exclusive. It is, however, very reputable, so if it's in your budget, I think you should check it out as well.

What tools do product design companies use for high-fidelity prototype

ProtoPie, Origami, actual code.

Figma is godawful for anything beyond simple flows. Everything is simplified and none of it really delves into how things actually work. No logic, no separate timelines, etc. Always an amateurish touch to them.

ProtoPie is the best hands down. Sadly, I probably won't use it nearly as much now that I've had to jump on the AI train and have been building most of my prototypes that way as of late.

I built this entire thing on Bolt casually in two days, and now I'm hooked: https://www.reddit.com/r/howtheyvote/comments/1lsi3eq/original_prototype_screen_video/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

For high-fidelity prototypes and micro-interactions, well-known product design companies commonly use tools like Figma (with its robust prototyping features and components), Adobe XD (good for detailed animations and transitions), and Framer (powerful for code-based interactions and realistic prototypes). Principle is also popular for creating animated UI elements and micro-interactions.

Some companies even use code-based solutions like React or Swift for extremely realistic prototypes, especially when testing performance or specific device features. The best tool often depends on the specific needs of the project and the team's skillset.

Exploring prototyping tools

Posted by joe_plays_games · in r/tabletopgamedesign · 5 months ago

I’ve been struggling for a while to find a set of prototyping tools that really helps me quickly iterate. I’d mainly been bouncing around a few tools and never sticking to one.

I recently started using Dextrous (online component prototyping tools) and have been a bit wowed by how quick it’s made my iterative process.

I wonder what other tools people are using that they feel are a really solid addition to their workflow. Can anyone else share their “go to” tools? 🛠️ I’d love to know about the tools that you’ve really locked in to and now couldn’t do without!

I use GIMP to touch up art.

Inkscape to make templates, icons, boards and sometimes cards.

Multideck to use the above with a spreadsheet to make large decks of cards.

Then Scribus to make rulebooks (and sometimes cards).

joe_plays_games · OP · 5 months ago

Thanks. I’ve heard of a few of those. I know gimp and Inkscape are both open source is that the same for the others?

1 upvotes on reddit

Scribus is open source, it has a similar function as Quark XPress or Affinity Publisher.

Multideck is a paid Mac only program, US$25. Works similar to nanDeck if you use nanDeck's Visual Editor. The others have PC, Mac and Linux versions.

Best prototyping tool with already built, functioning components?

Posted by KriWee · in r/UXDesign · 2 years ago

Hey all, I know I should do my own research but I figured it would be faster just to ask ya'll, is there a prototyping tool that literally lets you drag and drop working, functioning components for like a functioning wireframe? For instance, I'd love to just select a drop down menu, plop it in, and then populate it with items and have it work when I click through it, without having to make entirely different screens to show how the dropdown menu would work.

I'm an intermediate UX/UI designer so I know I should know these things but I'm just so used to working in XD and Figma for so long and making things super polished.

Free tool for iOS app prototyping

Posted by Careless-Debt-3719 · in r/UIUX · 8 months ago

Hi everyone,

I am an iOS app developer who has just started creating my own apps.

I am looking for a free or low cost tool that I can use for UX and prototyping my app.

I don’t have much experience in UX design, still in the learning phase, so don’t want to use a lot of money buying subscriptions for UX softwares.

Also, I have worked with fellow UX people in my team and this is how I have some experience with Figma.

Any ideas will be great help!

Thanks.

Key Considerations for App Prototyping Tools:

  1. Ease of Use: Look for tools that have an intuitive interface, allowing both designers and non-designers to create prototypes quickly.

  2. Collaboration Features: Choose tools that support real-time collaboration, enabling teams to work together seamlessly and provide feedback.

  3. Interactivity: Ensure the tool allows for interactive prototypes that simulate user experiences, including transitions and animations.

  4. Integration: Consider tools that integrate well with other design and development tools you’re already using (e.g., Sketch, Figma, Adobe XD).

  5. Export Options: Check if the tool allows you to export your prototypes in various formats or directly hand off designs to developers.

Top Tools for App Prototyping:

  1. Figma: A web-based design tool that excels in collaboration, allowing multiple users to work on the same project in real-time. It supports interactive prototypes and integrates well with other tools.

2. Adobe XD: Offers a robust set of features for designing and prototyping with a focus on user experience. It includes voice prototyping and easy sharing options.

  3. InVision: Known for its prototyping capabilities, InVision allows you to create interactive mockups and gather feedback from stakeholders easily.
