TL;DR
Quality and Durability
Warby Parker is generally perceived as offering higher-quality frames and lenses compared to Zenni Optical. Users have reported that Zenni's glasses can diminish in quality over time, with issues like frames bending or lenses scratching easily [1:1]
[2:7]. However, some users have found Zenni's glasses to be durable enough for daily use, especially considering the low price point
[2:3].
Customer Service
Warby Parker is often praised for its excellent customer service, with reports of hassle-free replacements and attentive support [1:2]. In contrast, Zenni's customer service experiences are mixed, with some customers facing challenges when addressing issues with their orders
[5:1].
Price and Value
Zenni Optical is known for its affordability, offering glasses at a fraction of the cost of Warby Parker [2:3]. This makes Zenni an attractive option for those on a tight budget or needing multiple pairs. However, some users feel that the lower price comes at the expense of quality
[1:4], while others argue that Zenni offers good value for money given the price
[3:3].
User Experience and Satisfaction
Both brands have their loyal followers and critics. Some users have had positive long-term experiences with Zenni, appreciating the ability to purchase multiple pairs cheaply [3:4]. On the other hand, there are reports of dissatisfaction with Warby Parker due to recent quality issues and price increases
[4:1]
[4:5].
Recommendations
For those seeking high-quality materials and robust customer support, Warby Parker may be the better choice despite the higher cost. Conversely, if you're looking for budget-friendly options and don't mind potential variability in quality, Zenni Optical could be suitable, especially if you prefer having multiple pairs or backups. Additionally, exploring other budget-friendly alternatives like EyeBuyDirect might also be worthwhile [4:2]
[5:8].
Hello, I will be buying a new pair of glasses soon and wanted to know if there's a difference between the materials being used for Warby Parker vs Zenni? Obviously Zenni glasses are more affordable, so does that mean they are cheaper quality?
I can’t speak for Zenni, but I’ve used Warby Parker for years and their customer service has always been amazing. I have a high prescription, and they sent out three new pairs of glasses for me, no questions asked, when my original order had the wrong pupillary distance and was causing headaches.
Nice. Thanks for the input. I have an appointment tomorrow with them at one of the locations. So hopefully I find a pair. Thanks again
I use both company’s -Warby Parker are definitely of a higher quality material wise but Zenni glasses hold up ok. I have had one pair of Zenni’s that were metal and got stretched and bent pretty quickly. But I’ve owned other pairs of Zenni’s that have lasted for years. If you are rough on your glasses than go with Warby Parker - if not I would get a couple of pairs of Zenni’s Good luck
Awesome! Thanks for the advice
To put it on a scale, if a decent pair of glasses you buy at a real, licensed independent optician is a 10, zenni is 1, and warby is 2, maybe 2,5.
I am happy zenni customer for several years. And last year Consumer Reports magazine did a reader survey and the results were in this order...
Costco
Warby Parker
Zennioptical
Etc...
Good to know. Thanks!
Warby. I’ve used both and can tell you that the quality of the frames and lenses from Zenni greatly diminish within a year. I think Warby’s customer service is a bit better too. Zenni’s pricing is clearly better but you lose the quality.
I've only ever bought one pair of online glasses, and it was Warby Parker's. I bought them about six years ago and wore them for two years before replacing.
I'm looking at new glasses (updated prescription) and all the local discount places still have their vision centers closed. So I'm looking online.
I can get a pair of Zenni glasses that I like for about $45 total. The comparable Warby parker glasses would be about four times that price.
Simple question: is the durability of Zenni glasses good? I wear my glasses all day, everyday, so I don't want to save the money just to have a pair of glasses that break super easily.
(Most of the quality comparisons I found online and on Reddit compared them both to expensive frames at an optometrist's shop, not to each other.)
I've been using glasses from Zenni for a couple of years. Build quality seems to be the exact same as every other pair of glasses/sunglasses I've ever owned.
>Build quality seems to be the exact same as every other pair of glasses/sunglasses I've ever owned.
The frames are fine, but I've had major issues with their lenses. Their coatings are cheap garbage that easily scratches and flakes off within a year or two.
I was able to find a local optical shop that replaced my Zenni lenses with Crizal lenses and 3 years later they still look like brand new.
My current main glasses are a pair of ~ $10 Zennis. I've had them almost two years and they show no signs of wear whatsoever. My previous ones were also Zenni and I had them at least 3 years.
I'm sure certain frames are better than others but I've never had any damage with any of them. For the price, even if you did have to replace them more often, it'd be worth it.
I personally bought a second pair of the super cheap ones to have around as backups just in case, it's worth it at that price. (....They actually ended up becoming my main glasses because they looked better, I wear the $9 ones instead of the $35 ones I bought).
TIL that Zenni exists. Tomorrow I'm ordering a new pair of glasses. Been needing some, but been putting off the $150+ I was going to have to spend elsewhere.
I got two pairs a few months ago from Zenni for less than $50. I will never buy from "traditional" places again.
May also depend how bad your eyes are. The zenni frames are really lightweight & cheap. If you have really bad eyes, like I do, you're going to have to deal with trying to get them adjusted constantly and they may break sooner from that. And thick lenses are going to look worse in cheap frames.
I have two pairs of $4.95 Firmoo glasses. I will never pay for Warby Parker’s. I feel like glasses are glasses. I can’t imagine the quality is anywhere near enough to justify such a high price, especially when I misplace mine so often.
UPDATE: thank you for all the comments and suggestions. I went to a large Warby Parker store, tried on a few that I had pre-selected online and style-wise they were OK. Quality wise, at least the ones that I tried they were "good", but IMO not excellent; although my experience is limited to wearing sunglasses.
So I opted for Zenni, the style is similar to the ones I like at WP, but the price is 1/3.
I will eventually need a second pair, I like to have a pair at the office, and a pair at home.
I need a new pair of reading glasses, I am tired of the cheap stuff; therefore I have decided to invest on something of quality and durability.
Of course the de facto standard is Warby Parker, I have friends who swear by it in terms of quality and service. A pair there would be $95. My quick search online gave me Zenni as an alternative, and there a pair would be about $40, but I don't see the same level of service as WB.
Regardless, in terms of quality and durability of the frame which one is better, WB or Zenni?
Thank in advance.
In terms of quality, both WP and zenni are the lowest of the low.
If you want actual good quality glasses, go to a real optician.
Been using zenni for over ten years. Still happy customer. If you are ok with a sort of DIY ordering process might work for you.
I am very ok with DIY ordering process, my only concern is quality.
WP might be a touch better, and they have stores in some cities. But I am very happy with Zenni quality. My last pair of single vision glasses was $30 and I wear them everyday, over a year old. My prescription did not change.
And you will not find total agreement on this topic in this sub.
Here is what Consumer Reports related a couple of years ago from a reader survey. https://www.reddit.com/r/glasses/comments/glidlq/consumer_reports_march_2020_58k_members_review/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=ioscss&utm_content=2&utm_term=1
I think that they use to have ok quality for the price. I recently ordered 3 pairs after not ordering for about 2 years. They are junk, they scratched within days of getting them. I bought the 1.57 high index with anti reflective coating and they're just junk.
I really wish they hadn't gone to crap but they have. With Warby Parker's prices I think I'm just going back to an optician.
These threads always bring in the brigade of THEY SUCK GO TO A REAL PLACE
I've used WP for years and now Zenni. Both are totally fine if you just want a pair of affordable glasses. Never had any complaints with either
Affordable-ish. I sprung for their high index lense and they were scratched within days. They're far too soft for any use beyond sitting at home.
My professional opinion? If your RX is low, WB and Zenni are probably OK.
And just OK.
If you have a prescription that is above normal, either in sphere(the first number of your RX) or cylinder(the amount of astigmatism; the third number is the astigmatism’s axis-the way the lens needs to set in the frame to correct the astigmatism), the online orders are absolutely NOT great.
The higher the RX, let’s just say anything over a -/+2.50 in the sphere, or over a -1.50 in the cylinder, the pupillary distance must be measured correctly in the monocular. Adding both PD(pupillary distance) measurements and just dividing the difference can cause something called unwanted prism.
Ordering no-lines(progressives, PALs) online is also going to be a possible mess. Dividing your binocular without the individual eye being measured will most likely cause your eye to not go into the channel with the best visual acuity/correction.
And getting the seg height(placement of the bifocal segment or the no-line in relation to the lower lid or pupil) where it needs to be can cause some unpleasant side effects.
Another issue is the type of lens. Usually around first or second generation lenses are used, ie outdated tech. We all got rid of our VCRs for a reason.
Patients have also brought in online glasses with crooked bifocals, lenses thicker than they should be, poor material quality or non glare(AR) coating that I could almost swear came from a spray can-and expect us to replace them for free because it was our RX in them.
This is all opinion from a 30 yr veteran. Believe it or not, I’m still learning.
And one more thing; I understand the financial reasons people go online. By all means, go. I never treat anyone poorly for that decision. But when you come in to ask us to take the PD measurement for you to take your business elsewhere, don’t do these two things:
Be a loudmouthed asshole about how we are “ripping you off,” are too expensive, or we “just don’t have anything out of your 1,100+ frames in stock that you like”. Admit you have a budget. You don’t have to treat us like shit when we are doing you a favor.
While we’re finishing up with another patient, getting our pupilometer, whatever, don’t walk around and sneakily take photos of the glasses you said you “didn’t like” to look them up online to get them cheaper. Again, just ASK, and we’ll write them down for you; you just look like a lying, cheap, POS. And, no, we probably won’t price match.
My professional opinion? If your RX is low, WB and Zenni are probably OK.
Reading glasses, +1.25. That's all I need.
Thank you for the very thorough explanation, and sorry for your #1 and #2 at the end.
My advice on those? Buy at least one really good pair for around $20.00. The nicer ones use higher optical quality lenses.
Then get a crap ton at the dollar tree and spread them like glitter at a strip club around your house, workspace, what have you. Do not neglect a pair or two in the bathroom.
Save the good pr for serious up close time, when you’ll be spending an hour or two doing serious reading or crafting, or whatever, or use them for your job.
To be clear: I was not intimating that you had strip club glitter around your house.
Zenni has a range of frames at different price points. I've only laid my hands on one WP frame, but it didn't look much better than a $20 Zenni pair. Maybe the coatings are better?
Try kits.com Their lab is in the Pacific Northwest (not sure if bc or wa), and they have a first pair free deal (just pay shipping).
Really just venting here… I used to swear by Warby Parker, but the last two pairs I bought developed warped lenses after about a year of normal use. I went into my local store to see if anything could be done, and the optician was useless—basically told me I could order a new pair at full price and that there was no manager or escalation process.
I called customer service and got the same runaround. Their “solution” was $30 off, which is still more than what I originally paid since their prices went up in April.
Feels like their quality has gone down while prices keep going up, and their customer service is nonexistent. Anyone have recommendations for better alternatives?
That's rough about Warby Parker. For alternatives check out Zenni Eyewear Lensdy or EyeBuyDirect.
I’ve been waiting over six weeks for a replacement pair of glasses, and this whole experience has been a disaster. The pair I received was so scratched up that every time I wipe them, they get worse. They’re now so bad they’re actually messing with my eyesight.
I’ve spent weeks on the phone with their customer service, and all they do is apologize. No solutions, no urgency. I made it clear that I was leaving the country on September 23 for a month, and they promised me I would have my glasses before then. Well, today is the 22nd, and guess what? Still no glasses.
Now I’m stuck. I either risk my vision or spend $400–$500 out of pocket for a new pair I shouldn’t even need. This is insane, unfair, and completely unprofessional.
Warby Parker is quick to sell you on “stylish, affordable” glasses, but when something goes wrong, they leave you stranded. If you value your eyesight, do not trust this company.
Bro, I'm at two weeks and I'm pissed. My old warby parker glasses are scratched to shit, paid for expedited service - no replies, no emails, nothing. I've bought this shit for ten years. Last time.
I feel like I read the same post (complaint) before. Did you post this earlier in the Warny Parker subreddit?
Nope just happened and came here didn't even know there was a Warby subreddit
That’s the thing about investment, private equity and becoming a public company. Eventually, the need for higher profit margins come due.
The game plan is always offer a superior product and experience at low prices to increase your market share, draw customers from competitors and increase revenue. Once you’ve locked in the customer base, slowly increase prices, increase profit margin and decrease quality and user experience. It’s a repetitive process in this hyper consumeristic, capitalist system we have going.
Look into r/EyewearEnthusiasts for brands that many people follow and have good quality. Not always the cheapest glasses but better than the Luxoittca crap that’s out there.
Also tariffs. That’s the bigger reason for the increases. I personally believe the $95 price point is part psychological and won’t be abandoned.
Thank you!!
Hi r/glasses!
It's been a fairly long while since buying glasses, but I've reached that point where I need to buy again.
Zenni for a long while was widely considered the best frugal/budget option, but I was wondering if that had changed as taking a look now Zenni seems to have went up a bit.
Anyone got any good frugal/budget options?
How much are yall paying through zenni for Lens & frame. I keep getting confused on sales on sights because it will end up being frame only and lens a lot more (I don't have insurance). I don't ever really see people say how much the total cost for new glasses is, usually just cheap or frugal. So I'm just wondering. I see from the comments you have to be careful for the quality too. :/
No one answered you! On Monday of this week, I spent $41 on new glasses and sunglasses. Considering my eyes have gotten terrible (-3, -2.5 and astigmatism) it’s a steal!
Hard to wait when walking around with -1.5 -1.25 lenses tho 😭
I just got some glasses from eyebuydirect and they're very high quality.
they're very high quality.
No, they aren't.
Oh so you know me personally and have seen the specific pair of glasses I bought? Didn't think so.
I had two pairs in a row break on my face. Buyer beware.
I continue to use them for over ten years, happily. But you will not find total agreement in this sub to this question.
Simple fact, their prices have opportunistically gone up dramatically for identical products/specs, in parallel with their rise in popularity. Now they're a ripoff.
I just recently purchased a pair of glasses from Zenni Optical and it was a completely terrible experience. To summarize, I ordered readers with a certain percentage with purple tinted lenses and received brown tinted glasses. No matter how many times I asked why I ordered purple tinted glasses and received brown lenses, no one could tell me how that happened. All they would say was it was my computer resolution or the lab made the glasses you ordered - but how could that be? They also show you online from their website how your glasses should look and my pair online from their site shows purple tinted lenses not the brown lenses I received. I also had probably 15 people from Zenni Optical contact me to find out what was going on but not a single person offered to explain to me how to get the glasses I actually ordered. They also provided no solution. Then they would email me asking me to rate my experience??? They used to be a great company - probably ordered 5 pairs of glasses over the last 15 years and now - I will never do business with them again. Buyer Beware!
Need new glasses, all the comparison threads I'm seeing on Reddit are 3+ years old.
Help me get some awesome glasses I won't regret while not going broke. Go!
My sister has ann unusual prescription and uses Costco (one nearsighted, one far sighted) I use zenni because I like being able to get multiple pairs of glasses and zenni is cheap. I've never tried warby parker.
Costco is good. But have been well served by zenni for several years.
You will find a range of opinions on this question.
Here is a Consumer Report survey…
Costco is best. Then WP. Then a dumpster. Then Zenni.
Nothing is wrong with zenni
I've been a faithful Warby Parker customer for over a decade, and this will be the last pair of glasses that I purchase from this company.
I've had my sunglasses for less than a year, and the lenses have degraded quickly, requiring replacement (small divots began forming at the center of each lens). I visited the store to find that replacement lenses are $205, while a new pair is $245. Meanwhile, I've consistently purchased brand-new glasses at WP for under $150.
I get that prices go up, but this is ridiculous, especially if the customer (a loyal one at that) is being punished for a quality issue that isn't their fault. When I asked the employee what may have led to the degradation of the lenses, she said "leaving them exposed to heat". I can't imagine this being a valid reason, considering that I live in Texas and am literally exposing the sunglasses to extreme heat every time I wear them - that is their sole function.
I've had several good years with this company, with thousands of dollars spent and countless individuals purchasing WP products at my recommendation, but this experience in unconscionable. I'm curious if other WP customers have had similar experiences with their products.
"My lenses are damaged"
*Doesn't use the free warranty
"I've been a customer for years"
*Has this argument worked for you in any other retail space?
You got prescription sunglasses for less than $150? When? Minimum would be $195 during the last few years, at least. Polarized or non-polarized started at frame price + $100. Only recently have they changed polarized to frame price + $150...
They've had $95 frames for 15+ years. This is the first major price increase ever in the company. Keep in mind that a SIGNIFICANT part of this is due to tariffs. Have you bought anything anywhere the last 4 months?
Prices are rising be of the Trump administration. Warby has to react and adapt.
Also, sounds like you just need to take better care of your glasses
The lens damage started in considerable amounts shortly after the 6 month period in which the warranty is effective. I took great care of my glasses, ie proper cleaning methods and never leaving them to sit in the car. And yes, customer loyalty is very often respected by brands. After doing my research I've found that not only is this quality issue but Warby's pricing exceeds many other brands that have superior styles/options.
Glad you really really really love this brand though lol hopefully they recognize your loyalty when you have a faulty product and need replacement.
do you have recommendations for other brands I should go to with better pricing/quality? I've been very disappointed with warby parker.
You didn’t answer any of my questions lol
Have fun complaining, I guess
You know you got a 6 month scratch warranty on every prescription pair right?
Yeah - key word, 6 month. Unfortunately I had my glasses somewhere between 8-9 months so they wouldn't honor the warranty
There are so many factors when purchasing glasses. Did you price out polarized versus non-polarized lenses this time? Were you in need of a progressive lens when perhaps you didn’t need it in the past? Was insurance involved in the previous purchase? Was there an RX change that may have caused your optician to recommend a different lens material or style? Did you choose a frame that may have been more expensive than your previous? And prices do change. Also, heat and chemical exposure can cause damage to lenses. Salt water, chlorine, improper cleaning, prolonged heat. There are just so many things that can happen to lenses.
Heat as in leaving them in the car. It can cause lenses to delaminate and deform. It can also cause the frame to come out of alignment which can damage the lenses depending on how the frame’s bent.
Totally get that. This didn't apply because I never left my glasses in the car, if I'm not wearing them they're in their case in a drawer
I am also a long time WP customer and came to this subreddit for some answers as I experienced something similar.
I have a pair of glasses that are no longer available in that size or color. But available in the same size other colors or same color other sizes, so of course I asked if I can have the lenses replaced for a fee and I’d send them Via mail.
They agreed to this but in the price quote, they told me I’d have to pay for the full frame price again, yes, on the frame that I already own and paid for.
I’ve bought about 7 pairs of Warby Parker frames over the last 10-15 years. I’ve never had any issues up until now.
I bought a pair of glasses about a week ago. 3-4 days later, I got an email from them saying they still hadn’t received my prescription from my eye doctor. I called up my eye doctor and they informed me that they had already faxed over my prescription days ago. I thought that was weird, but uploaded the prescription to the app anyways.
Two days later, I got another email saying they still haven’t received my prescription or my PD. I then did the PD test on the app which informed me that my PD isn’t needed for any order at this time (?). And I then sent my prescription over a second time, this time via email.
Finally, today, a week after I placed the order, I get a short email from a person this time saying that the glasses I ordered are actually sold out and Warby has no plans of bringing them back. Meanwhile, as of now, the glasses are still listed on the website as available and I haven’t been issued a refund yet.
All around a chaotic experience and such poor organization and communication from a company that has grown so significantly in the past decade. Recommend avoiding them if you can.
Warby Parker has one of the WORST customer service experiences I've seen in my long life.
I went in on August 15 to a local branch with my new prescription for progressives. I was told that because of a "new system," there might be a 3 day delay on glasses.
I did not hear from WP by September 6, so I called the number for the local shop. This number took me to the customer service line overseas. The woman I was speaking to found my account and could not see what had happened. She said she would investigate what was going on with the glasses and call me right back. She did NOT.
Called again on September 9, and was told that "UPS never picked up the glasses." I expressed my disbelief about that - what does it even mean? If the glasses were made, wouldn't someone just send them out with the next shipment? The CSR told me she would put the order through again and expedite it, so I should get my glasses in 7-10 days.
I checked progress on the new order using the app. It said, "Building the fames" for a full 10 days. On Sept. 19, it finally said they were shipping to the store.
On Sept. 26, I checked progress again, and it still said, "Shipping to the store." Then, about an hour later, I got an email saying, "Thanks for visiting today! We will begin making your glasses right away!" And now when I checked the progress online, it was back to "Building the frames."
Called the number, woman again said that she would investigate and get back to me via email about what was happening with my order. She acknowledged that their "new system" does not allow them to track orders during shipping. (WTF?! Like... I buy a used item off eBay and I can follow its progress from some woman's basement to the post office to my house. But a huge corporation can't track their orders!?!) No further contact with the CSR.
Today (Sept. 27), I went to the store and was immediately given a refund by the employee who worked there. He was very apologetic and explained that the "new system" is causing many problems.
I'm not sure why a large company like WP would deliberately implement such a woefully bad and frustrating customer service system. CSRs cannot track orders or resolve any issues, and appear to openly lie to customers about tracking down orders or solving problems.
Beyond that, WP - a company whose mission is to BUILD AND SELL GLASSES! - seems to be unable to produce a pair of glasses and get them to a customer who has paid for them.
I will never use WP again.
Having a similar experience. Initial pair of progressives delivered were made wrong. The transition line was way too high on the lens. The local store where they were originally ordered took new measurements and ordered a replacement to be made. Long story short - still waiting on the replacement pair a month after the replacement was ordered. Customer service told me yesterday that it will be another 2 weeks. So if they actually follow through, that will make a total of 8 weeks from the time I placed an order at one of the brick and mortar stores until the time I receive a usable pair.
They attribute the delay to “upgrades at their lab”.
In parallel to this, I ordered a pair of prescription sunglasses from Costco. Costco’s most expensive lens was the same price as Warby Parker’s least expensive lens and I had my new perfectly made glasses in 6 days.
I should just cancel my order and get my money back.
I was a part of their customer service team, and on May 30th, they let go of almost their entire US customer service call centers to hire only overseas. They started hiring them slowly about a year prior to this happening, and our jobs essentially became 50% cleaning up their messes. It was actually scary how truly bad they were at their job, and how little they cared about the customers whatsoever. They will blantantly lie to you, or tell you that they're going to do something and simply not do it without another thought. I never recommend WP to anyone who doesn't have a physical store to go in person, because you will never get proper help over the phone from them. I'm so sorry that you're dealing with that. I would call in and just ask to speak to a manager.
Yikes. I am big US based buying person.
I’m here because of horrendous customer service issues and incorrect measurements on my glasses. I recently re-ordered the same pair and they are so tight they can’t even be adjusted. This is the same style as my last order which fit fine. Then the size up is so large they fall off my face after adjusting. I kept telling them I think original pair was labeled wrong and was a narrow instead of medium. They also coded my order wrong and this is after having a different rep give me skit level atrocious phone customer service to the point I was left in shock just trying to get my order! I’ve ordered from here dozens of times and they suck now. Also, the narrow, medium, wide dimensions change drastically with each pair. One pair was 132mm, the other 142mm and both were “medium” … it’s really frustrating when I used to have amazing service and no issues. I’ve had countless the past couple months just trying to get a pair of glasses
Not a fan of the labeling of the width on any of the websites. The actual width is very dependent upon the adjustment of the frame. The frame front gets heated when the lenses are installed and the same frame can become very narrow or very wide depending on the lenses and the technician installing the lenses. This is an adjustment an in person optician can make.
I think they’ve slowly been losing their edge since going public. There’s even been a huge decrease in customer service and overall optical expertise in their brick n mortar locations.
Oh, it wasn’t even that slow if you were working for them at the time. I was in a CX role and right after they went public a bunch of employee and customer benefits were flushed. They outsource for employment now too to places in the Philippines so they can likely get away with paying people pennies. They’re really shit.
I was an optician at one of their brick n Mortar locations, and left right before they went public, and the benefits before were actually great. I heard from friends that they changed that relatively quickly.
Wait spill the tea! Today was my first day working at warby opening a brand new location
Yes, which is definitely why it comes down to WP just wanting to save money. It’s such a gross decision. Their cost of living is substantially less, so we can’t really compare their hourly rate to ours, but I understand what you’re saying.
My prescription is pretty high, -9.00R/-9.25L and the reason i'm skeptical about the quality of these glasses is because they're quite cheap; about $300-$400 cheaper than if I had gotten them at a local optometrist shop with insurance.
I just received my first pair of glasses from Zenni Optical today! Titanium frames with blue-blocker progressive lenses. They were only $125 total. First time with progressive lenses, so there's supposed to be an adjustment period. But I can actually see with them! The pair that I bought originally from America's Best were over $400 (no blue-block) and I could not read a thing with them on. I took them back immediately. Oh, that $125 also included a pair of matching clip-on sunglasses (shaped just like the lenses on the glasses)
WP can do okay in person. Your rx is high enough I would never get glasses online because you can't get proper measurements done, and I would recommend going to an actual optician.
Proper measurements as in the lens? I was thinking of just getting my prescription from an optometrist and then ordering a pair online to save money lol.
Also, what's the difference between getting the glasses done from an actual optometrist vs an online glasses company? Do the online companies cut corners, which is why its way cheaper?
No, proper measurements like OC height and such. These measurements are basically how the frame fits you/where your pupils are in the frame, and need to be taken while you're wearing it. OC height is basically how far from the bottom of the frame your pupils are looking at, and it's used to get the clearest part of the lens as close to in front of your pupils as possible. Online companies cut corners, but a large part of online being cheaper is not having anyone to take measurements and not needing a storefront. For prism or high astigmatism, this basically makes online glasses dodgy at best and often straight up useless. You don't get glasses from an optometrist, you get them from an optician. An optician should be trained to take measurements and assess the type of lenses that would be best for your frame and rx as well as recommend frames that will look good and fit well. They also adjust frames to fit properly (which you should not be doing at home because you can break things). All in all opticians are vital for some prescriptions, but if your rx is mild enough, then not having the measurements may still be within your range of tolerance.
All of the measurements that you need are on your prescription. Sometimes they leave of PD (pupil diameter) but I just called where I got the exam, and they gave it to me over the phone. Apparently you can do that measurement yourself at home with a printable template too. But whomever did your eye exam will give it to you
None of the companies you mentioned make good quality glasses. For a good quality pair, the only option is a real optician. As for your high Rx: in order for tour glasses to actually work, measurements need to be taken by a professional on you when wearing the actual frame. This is impossible to do online.
The prescription sunglasses from Eyebyedirect are very good quality. I was very impressed. I would say better than clearly
Zenni I love them ! Got my family to use them too.
So on my third pair of Zenni glasses. Had one pair a year ago I got for cheap ones to use if I’m doing something I don’t want to risk damaging my good glasses. 2nd pair were prescription sunglasses. Those seem good quality and work well.
Just got my third pair to use now as my main pair and the frames feel very comfortable and don’t feel flimsy or cheap at all. They feel about the same quality as my glasses that costed 3x the price.
The lenses as well are very clear and I see no difference in the Zenni transition lenses over my Rayban lenses that are digitally surfaced (supposed to be the best). They are just as clear.
Nice. I have used zennioptical for my glasses for over ten years. Still a happy customer.
If these new glasses remain good I’ll definitely be buying from Zenni again. Plus it only took 7 days to get my glasses vs 3-4 weeks it took LensCrafters.
Agreed same here, when I order incorrect frame due to my mistake they issued me a refund without me having to ship it back as I am in Australia.
Before that I purchased 5-6 pairs.
One of the first pairs was coated with oil from the lab and they sent me replacement immediately after showing photos.
I never buy glasses in store personally. I have a couple of times, but the slight quality difference in the lenses just isn’t enough to justify paying 5x as much for the same thing to me. Allegedly some people can’t get online glasses to work, but I personally think a lot of that is either customer error or hype by luxottica and its affiliates. I’ve bought my glasses online since the very beginning and I honestly don’t think I missed out on anything because of it. Only I definitely have a lot more money in the bank lol
That being said, zenni isn’t my favorite. I used them for a while, but they’ve definitely been hiking up their prices recently, and the prescription range is pretty limited. My go to store is Payne eyewear. They’re the only store that can fulfill my complex prescription ( prism progressives), at start up prices, and their quality and customer service have always been on par with my expectations. I also like firmoo a lot, because they also have good quality and they have the cutest frames hands down. I’ve used a few others but those are the ones that really stand out.
Btw if you’re unsure of quality, you can get the prescription checked at your eye doctor for free. I’m glad you’ve found something that works tho. It’s honestly such a sweet deal to but glasses online
Yeah. They seem just as good quality as my more expensive glasses. The lenses feel the same too.
I mean I noticed a /slight/ difference in quality of optics, but not anywhere near enough to justify the price difference. It’s crazy too bc I wear prism progressives, which most opticians will advise you not to buy online under any circumstances, but the company I use (Payne eyewear) definitely nailed it. I had my eye dr check and the prescription is spot on, and the measurement method they use seems to be accurate. Like I guess you could buy a low quality or incorrectly made pair of glasses online, but you can definitely do that in store too, only you’re way less likely to get yelled at for actually pointing it out. I’m glad your new glasses are working so well! I honestly think more people should order online instead of in store
I have two pairs from Zenni where the frames broke at the temples after about six months. There is no warranty. There are no replacement parts available.
They are very low-quality frames.
