[5:9].
About Face by Halsey
About Face stands out for offering affordable yet high-quality makeup. It's known for vibrant colors and innovative products that cater to those looking for something beyond the "clean girl" aesthetic [5:1],
[5:4].
These celebrity-endorsed makeup lines have managed to carve out a niche in the competitive beauty market by offering unique products that reflect the personal styles and values of their famous founders.
Now Ariana Grande has jumped on the makeup line bandwagon and is creating her own line. To each their own but I'm beginning to think this has become a new fad or a way to make extra income on the side. This brings me to a very interesting Q:
Let's keep existing brands out.

Now that I think more about it - Lupita Nyong'o 's line might be really cool as I feel she is always very well put together makeup and dress wise.
Celebrity makeup for the most part is pretty good. I've been impressed by Rihanna and KVD's products (even though the latter has shot herself in the foot).
Ru Paul would make a killer makeup line. Call it "Ru Paul's Drag Makeup" and it should fly off the shelves.
Most cringeworthy-- Donald Trump making a self-tanner.
Ru had a makeup line during S6, or at least a collab that they promoted during the show. Some tie-in with Color Evolution. It seemed cheap, to be honest.
I have never seen a mention of ColorEvolution beyond RuPaul’s collab, that’s the only reason I think anyone may know the brand
I came here to say I dont particularly care about celebrity makeup and that celebrity connection doesn't make me more interested in looking into a product,
but then I read "Ru Paul" and "makeup" next to each other and that careful, mindful shopper in me fled town and disappeared across the border of Mexico, never to be seen again. I would so be on board for that shit.
I guess celebrity makeup marketing really does sell as long as they're celebrities you're actually interested in. ♂️
I think that for the most part a makeup line is pretty separate from the celebrity. Rihanna built her makeup line on her celebrity, but it is known for being very pigmented and shade inclusive. But celebrity is not enough to carry a makeup line-- Kim Kardashian is much more famous than her younger sister Kylie, but only one succeeded (and became the world's youngest billionaire) with makeup.
Kat Von D is another story. HEr line was very successful, but she came out as an anti-vaxxer last year and there's rumors her husband is a neo Nazi. Now I only see her makeup on the clearance racks of TJ Maxx or Marshall's.
For me to buy makeup-- I need to be interested in the product first. Someone show me a good cool-toned palette and I don't care who it is (within limits-- I wouldn't exactly buy a Harvey Weinstein makeup line)
Id be here for a Trixie/Kim Chi/Violet/Detox/Alaska/Asia OHara or Raven line. I imagine all of them would have a lot of awesome eyeshadows and lipsticks that would stay on through anything.
I know a few of them have done little collabs etc but I want a full collection from each
I will always dream of a Dita Von Teese line. I know she’s had a MAC lipstick and several years ago had a collab with a German brand but I’d love to see her have a permanent line of her own
YES. I have wondered for years why Dita hasn't done her own makeup line. Her red lipstick and black eyeliner would be to die for, and I would just hand over my money.
She had her "line/special edition" of a few products under German brand ArtDeco. It was red lipsticks, lip gloss and a blush. Maybe a few more products.
Red lipstick were classic red, really good quality for a price.
She did a collab with MAC too. I’ve brought this up before and folks didn’t think it was a true collaboration and she was just a model for it. But it was called Nocturnelle and I spent all my birthday money on it.
In a broader sense, I think Janelle Monae would have just the most amazing and artistic makeup line, if she ever decided to go there.
In a narrower sense and based on my own tastes, I'd absolutely buy the shit out of anything released a la Meghan Markle and/or Gemma Chan. Both wear the kind of makeup I'd love to wear, and both are super cool women.
On the more "hilarious" end of things, I'd love to see what Kanye West would come up with.
I’m waiting very patiently for Gaga to release her line because I feel like it’s going to be amazing.
I wish Idris Elba would release a cologne just so I could know what he smells like. Because we all know he smells amazing.
I would die if Kid Rock released his own brand of hair grease. “One free pre-stained gross white tank top with every purchase!”

For me, Rhode is the only real celebrity beauty line that I keep coming back to.
I tried Rare Beauty, I didn't like the blushes, and found their other products pretty meh. I've had a good few from them - contour sticks, highlighters, lip products. None of them really did what they said they would do. I found the blushes hard to blend, the highlighter was way too liquid and the lip products just didn't hit for me, at all.
I've dipped in and out of other celebrity brands over the years too.
But for me, Rhode works because each product is well thought out. There's not been a million and one launches of new products - they're variations on the same products. The skincare is genuinely designed to be good skincare, and is the only skincare that works for me. The blushes are perfect (for me) as I like a lighter makeup look. Same with the lip tints and shapes. Even the phone case, which is a novelty, is actually pretty good for me too. I'm glad they're coming to Sephora, so I can stock up easier, and genuinely really like them as a brand because it's all curated well, and works well.
Does anyone know why all these celebrities are creating makeup/skin care brands like JLo, Lady GaGa, Hailey Bieber, Selena Gomez, Drew Barrymore and Alicia Keys… (who was once so against makeup)
Is it for a cash grab? These celebrities have had nothing to do with the makeup or skincare industry before, does anyone trust their brands?
It just doesn’t make sense it makes sense for MUA’s and aestheticians to have brands because they work and are highly educated in that field.
It’s just a trend at the moment I think. A couple years ago everyone had a fashion line and now with the rose of skincare it’s skincare and makeup lines. Just what’s popular and profitable these days
Exactly this, no deeper meaning to it. With that being said, Rihanna did do very well with Fenty makeup though. I know many people like Selena Gomez's Rare Beauty too but I've yet to try any of her products myself.
I think part of it is also that there are brand incubators that basically make creating a brand super easily. Kelly Gooch has a video on this which I think is interesting
Alicia keys was never "so against makeup"
she just wanted to show people that there is beauty in a natural face... no issue with her starting a skincare brand
The only celebrity makeup line thats not considered a "celebrity makeup brand" is Fenty
Obviously there’s been an influx of celebrity makeup and skincare brands in the past few years, and I’m not necessarily against it as a concept or am making this post just to complain about it since I know that’s tired.
I’m just genuinely confused, how do these celebrity makeup brands work?
In order for me, and I assume the majority of people, to want to buy from a celebrity makeup brand, I’d have to respect and have a lot of love for them. It makes sense for celebrities with large fandoms like Rihanna, Arianna Grande, Harry Styles, etc… hence why those brands have been so successful… but who is buying from Jared Leto or Kate Moss or Jennifer Lawrence?
It makes a little more sense for celebrities with an older audience who might not be prevalent on social media, and it could all just be money laundering or cash grabs, but I assume a lot of time and money goes into some of these brands and I’m confused who they believe their target audience is and who is going to buy their products.
I’m mostly including ‘irrelevant’ celebrities in this, but also celebrities who aren’t necessarily doing badly in their career and are well known, but don’t have any sort of dedicated group who likes them enough to buy from them.
I honestly don’t know, and so many of them make no sense to me. Lady Gaga having a line makes sense, her style and fashion are almost as famous as her music, same with Rihanna & Halsey, and being generous I can even extend that to the plastic Kardashian/Jenners. Pretty much all the others? Nope, you lost me. When I think of someone like Pharrell, Jared Leto, Selena Gomez, etc, I just don’t automatically associate them with skincare/cosmetics. The vast majority seem like the whole thing is a massive cash grab and little thought is actually paid to why these products are different and how they represent their personal brand.
I don’t even think they necessarily have to be interested or associated with makeup and skincare. Selena Gomez’ brand did well because she had a dedicated fanbase who was willing to buy her products.
But Pharell or Jared Leto? They’re mostly liked, well known, but I don’t see anyone who’d be willing to support them or buy cosmetics from them.
There have been plenty of celebrity brand flops, but I think Rare has been so successful bc A. The products are truly fantastic and work for the everywoman, and B. The ethos of the brand
Selena Gomez's brand is GREAT, there was a lot of skepticism when it was announced but it won out because it's just fantastic user experience. She suffers from shaky hands because of Lupus so her line focuses on easy streamlined application that doesn't take a lot of skill or product, it's a great angle.
They're for the celebrity. To make money. To get as much money as they can while their name still means something to the public and before they fade into irrelevancy.
I see this posted all the time, as though celebrity brands are a new thing. They aren't. They've been doing this for decades. I remember in the 2000s, it was all about perfumes. Now, skincare and makeup are having a moment, because that's what is "in" right now.
Just to illustrate the point, I did a super quick Google search and came across this PopSugar article talking about celeb beauty brands going back to the 90s:
https://www.popsugar.com/beauty/timeline-celebrity-beauty-brands-48036286
I mean, I agree with you.
As I said in my post, I’m not against celebrity makeup brands as a concept. It was perfumes, then alcohol, now cosmetics, some are successful and the point of all celebrity business ventures is to make money.
My point was more who they expect to buy their products and how they expect to make the money they’ve invested back without a solid fanbase willing to buy their products. Who is spending hundreds on Pharell’s skincare products? He has a little advantage because he’s known for looking good for his age, but it makes no sense for other celebrities.
These celebs have legions of fans. I would imagine there is a fair bit of market research done by whoever their investors and backers are before they launch to gauge interest in these brands.
But regardless, a quick search shows that Jared Leto has 10 mil followers on Instagram. Pharell has 14 mil. If beauty guru influencers with only a fraction of those followers are able to sustain a beauty business, certainly these people can, especially with the markups they can charge. Tons of beauty gurus have been made millionaires with a much smaller fan base, solely because they have a devoted base of fans who will try anything they release. Lots of people will buy into it just to try it out. Others will support just because they are a fan.
Don't underestimate the power of name recognition alone. Just because the very small Beauty Guru Chatter community or /MUA communities thing it's ridiculous doesn't mean the vast majority of the populace will.
Totally forgot Jennifer Aniston was involved with Living Proof! Man, it's crazy that this isn't even a complete list of celebrity cosmetic collaborations.
I personally prefer if celebrities come out with makeup lines than skincare. Idk it feels weird to me when they promote skincare cause we know damn well they would NOT even be using that stuff XD they are getting botoxs, expensive facials, etc.
Beauty incubators are blowing up. It makes it a lot cheaper and faster to launch a line than it used to be. So the barrier to entry for all these celebrities is lower.
I think that’s the most likely answer to my question. The majority of these celebrity brands are probably pre-packaged, designed before the celebrity agreed to put their names on it, and their involvements ends at the money they make from it.
Some seem a lot more well-designed and unique, they make sense to the celebrity and what they’re known for, but they still lack a fanbase who would be willing to buy it.
Kate really should've released a makeup line around the mid 2000s since that would've been the best timing to capitalize on her whole look/vibe/popularity imo, but she might've had a non-compete with Rimmel at the time, I suppose.
Nowadays it's a harder sell as I don't think she has icon status with Gen Z and her whole aesthetic/look/rep would definitely be more in line (imo) with cosmetics aimed at people going out and having messy party nights, college/20s age range. She should def have an amazing eyeliner formula first and foremost since that's the singular piece of makeup I think of when I think of Kate Moss, before anything else.
Skincare/wellness just doesn't feel like a proper match for Kate Moss, you know? It's not believable as her brand to me.
Title.
I like the following celeb brands:
• Victoria Beckham makeup- really nice formulas, and luxurious packaging
• Pattern beauty haircare- best shampoo/conditioner and styling products I’ve ever used on my wavy/curly hair
• Lisa Eldridge makeup- wonderful formulas and nice packaging
• Haus Labs makeup- really nice foundation
• About-Face Makeup- really nice and affordable makeup for a celeb brand.
• Rare Beauty- I love the liquid blushes
• makeup by Mario … kinda celeb brand right? - I have a few things from the brand that i thoroughly enjoy
There is probably more that I like, but that’s all I can think of off the top of my head
Victoria Beckham eye liners are hands down the absolute best I have ever used.
Yes, they're fantastic!
Same!
Love Victoria Beckham’s packaging… Counter worthy and it just makes me feel extra when being used.
Same! The packaging is seriously impressive. Some of the most impressive I own. Because they have the look, but they also have the weight. Most brands give you one or the other. It’s rare to have both.
And the actual makeup itself is so good too. I really love the actual products themselves, it’s just an added bonus that they really delivered on look/feel too. I guess it’s only fair given the prices, but I still appreciate everything.
I’m surprised nobody has mentioned Fenty yet. I couldn’t care less about celebrities and I’m not a fan of Rihanna’s music at all, actually wish I’d never heard it. But I really enjoy her makeup brand. So many great products. Also they were one of the early brands to release such a wide shade range in their base products.
The loose powder, contour stick and bronzer powder are everyday staples for me. I also like the foundations, primers, highlighter powders, mascara, lip gloss and eye primer. The only thing I’ve tried that I didn’t like were they eyeliner pencils, they were too hard and dried out quickly.
Fenty was the first one i thought of. Love the highlighters and the contour sticks
I love her powder, the hydrating foundation she discontinued was good too. I just used up her cookies and cream scrub… thankfully it was half price at TJMaxx but even then it wasn’t worth the $15, it was nothing special.
About Face. They always get popular this time of year for festival season, but it was nice seeing a brand not going all clean girl when most brands were turning the color down.
I like Ashley Tisdale’s brand Frenshe. It’s affordable and they’re the types of products that don’t stick around too long.
About Face and Lisa Eldridge are probably my favorites. About Face's fair olive foundation is the only foundation that ever truly matched me.
I have Lisa Eldridge's olive skin tint and her Rouge Experience lipsticks are now my favorite. They are so comfortable and the colors (the ones that I have) are true to tone.
I have a few Rare Beauty items that I enjoy as well.
I don't mind celebrity brands as long as they are putting thought into them and not just a cash grab.
Gonna be real, I’m really turned off by celebrity owned/endorsed brands. Like, what makes you so special that you need a makeup/skincare line on top of all of the other shit you already do??? Did you go to beauty school? Are you a cosmetologist or esthetician? Are you a cosmetic chemist? No? Then fuck off. lol sorry. I’ll admit though, I do like the Haus Labs blush in “Dragon Fruit Daze”. It was an impulse buy and it looks great with my pale skin tone. But yeah, I usually steer clear from celebrity brands.
I consider the celebrity brands the same as any other brand. There are probably good and bad products but the celebrity is more like a paid endorsement.
I feel like some of them make sense though. Like with fenty, known for having an extensive shade range in pale and deep shades when it was hard to find anywhere else.
They succeed when the celeb genuinely cares about the brand and is extremely involved not just at launch but after (and is passionate about their line!)
The ones that flop feel inauthentic and you can tell the celeb was just approached with the opportunity, collected their check and only shows up for whatever is contractually obligated.
Totally agree. I can tell who actually cares about the brand and is super involved and who’s just the face of it. REM - not so much. HAUS/Rare? I feel like they’re super involved. Fenty started off that way but now I think it’s a machine that runs itself so she’s stepped back.
Haus and Rare definitely. Fenty im not sure about I don’t really follow the brand. Rhode, Hailey seems very involved.
Gxve and Outset are two off the top of my head that never felt authentic and flopped
Tbh, I might actually view a product slightly negatively if I know it’s owned by a celebrity which means I’m just more wary of it.
Me too. I don’t buy from celebrity owned brands. I’d rather spend my money on well established prestige brands.
Fenty / Rare Beauty / Haus labs - I cannot say for the entire range of products, but I tried some and they were nice and would repurchase
Fenty: foundation, concealer, setting spray
Rare Beauty: highlight blush, highlighter (both powder), brow pencil
Haus Labs: lip oil
Tagging onto this as these are pretty much the only celeb brands I bother with.
Fenty - any of the glosses. For a gloss they last pretty long and depending on the shade they’re very pigmented. Also love the contour stick.
Rare - the blushes and highlighters but also a special shout out to the tinted moisturizer. Gets me through all my lazy work days, is super effortless to apply on the go and lasts the whole day.
Haus Labs - that foundation needs to be studied because I look like a goddess whenever I wear it, and I’m not exactly skilled lol. I always, always, always get compliments whenever I wear it.
Same here re: Haus Labs! I got my makeup done at a Sephora in LA for an event once and my artist used Haus Labs on me for the first time (for me) - I haven't looked back since. I still get compliments on my makeup and I am TERRIBLE at makeup 🤣
I agree about fenty and haus lab. Rare beauty is pretty meh to me
Some seem like the celebrities actually care about market niche and quality products. I'll get skin/hair products from Fenty and I really like the color products from about face. Makeup artist and drag queen founded brands are usually fine too.
I completely avoid anything from JLo, Beyoncé, Kardashians, and influencers.
Oook this is inspiring me to check out about face! I wanna go out w snatched clever art on my face and I'm thinking her Brand would be suuper fun to play with✨💗✨
I think a lot of celebrity makeup brands have some cute products, but I dislike the brands as a matter of principle because I think they’re a big factor contributing to how saturated the beauty market is. The only one that’s a really heavy hitter to me is Fenty because it kickstarted brands having wider skintone ranges. I really like REM beauty lip glosses but I don’t see why Ariana needed to make her own makeup brand, same with the Drew Barrymore makeup brand, the Victoria Beckham makeup brand, the Hailey Bieber makeup brand, etc- they might have good products but the market wasn’t in desperate need of them. What happened to celebs just becoming the face of Covergirl, Lancome, etc and mostly using professional makeup like MAC and Nars onstage and in films? Just my hot take! I long for simpler days. I wish new brands wouldn’t pop up all the time unless they actually had intention to innovate.
i actually think victoria beckham is one of the best celebrity brands out right now— there is so much care put into every product and as someone who is extremely picky about products, truly nothing i’ve tried from her brand has disappointed. i think she truly understands glam!
I’m not usually a fan of celebrity makeup brands in general but I like Fenty for the wide range of skintones they cater to. They have 6 different red shades of eyebrow pencil. 6!!!! Most brands don’t even have one, so they are an obvious go-to for my ginger self.
Haus labs has some great products too. I love the highlighters and blushes.
Same here!! Riri’s foundation is the closest I’ve gotten to a shade match.
Love that they have so much for you! Red heads rock!
my fav is fenty. i just starting to dislike how they’re so pricy. they’re already rich, what more do they want now.
I really like Fenty. I tried their contour sticks and branched out from there. I love the quality. I'm not a makeup expert by any means, but I have not been disappointed by Fenty.
Agreed, price is fair and quality is excellent. My top products are blushes, soft lit foundation, original lip glosses and new lip gloss sticks. I usually use Chanel, Dior, Hourglass and I find Fenty quality to be very similar to them.
I like Fenty but I wish they used better packaging. Some of their packaging feels cheaper than it should be.
What are the best products around owned by a celebrity?
Kay Beauty and HRX.
I need to read up about HR’s brand as I hear good things about it. It’s incredible how deeply and passionately Kat is involved with her brand. Would love to see a “making of” type of documentary. Same for Huda. I haven’t used Kay as it is not available where I live but I’ve never heard anyone say negative things about it.
Glad HR and Kat are not merely lending their name to the brand.
Correct but hrx quality is questionable saying this from experience.
Still Kay and HRX and Quench
Oh really? And what’s Quench?
Ditto
Kay Beauty - love the products. Katrina definitely has established herself as an entrepreneur and built a strong reputation.
Kay beauty
Not owned exactly
Joint venture sold through Nykaa
Kay beauty
Kay Beauty, FTW! Always! ❤️
No other celebrity brand has come close to its quality standards and popularity. From the celebrities to the consumers, Kay Beauty has set very high benchmarks. All hail Kay Beauty! ❤️
I feel kinda mixed about them. For example, Fenty by Rhianna or Rare Beauty by Selena Gomez are genuinely good makeup brands that provide really nice products and lots of shade ranges. They also create some cool staple products (like Fenty highlights or Rare liquid blushes) that are really unique and worth the money.
But then sometimes I see new celebrity makeup lines and it just feels like they want money. Gwen Stefani is known for her bright red lips, yes, so I understand that, but then these quad eyeshadows that are $36 and literally look so uninspired and basic just scream "people will buy it because it has my name on it". Not to mention the face oil for $62.
Maybe I'm just being cynical, but I'm a little tired of seeing uninspired celebrity makeup lines. Thoughts?
> But then sometimes I see new celebrity makeup lines and it just feels like they want money.
I mean, that is basically the main reason. Even with Rihanna and Selena. Especially with less people buying music today, musicians see the value in making money other ways. Influencers have jumped on the train too.
I’ll still buy their products if it’s good quality.
Yes, definitely agree. Fenty was a good release because they had such good shade inclusion (right when the lack of shades was getting attention) and Rare stands for a good cause. I haven't heard anything about Gwen's line so its just another makeup product.
It may work out for her or it may be a bust. Fully agree with your comments on the quad and face oil. In my mind, maybe she should have focused on a lip line. This will likely be something customers try once, but will it end up being a holy grail item? Remains to be seen.
This goes back to my post about packaging. Very eye-catching, right?
I'm over it. I have my staple products and the stuff that I am interested in trying isn't from a cash grab. I'd much rather give my money to a small indie brand than some millionaire celebrity.
I agree. Mostly tired of it. Maybe I’ll find one product I’ll like but I’m much more interested in makeup lines from actual makeup pros.
I really like Kat Von Dee’s artistry and design. The formulas can be just okay. But the packaging and components always looked cool.
I must admit I loved the lipsticks. But not much else.
Thank immediately thought of Kat Von D
I ain't no hollaback guuuuuuuuuuuuuuuurl!
Between all the influencer bs and celebrity brands being shilled, it just makes me want to shop directly from my favorite brands.
It's not the year 2001 anymore. Like I don't care about anyone enough to dislike them, but trying to BE relevant again by throwing some drug-store quality products up for sale isn't the best way.... but what do I know? Lol
Gwen Stefani is 15 years too late imo, should’ve come out with her makeup line when everyone was into LAMB
THANK YOU! Let's not forget about her little Harajuku Lovers body sprays and Alibaba lip pencils and crap that ended up in the TJ Maxx clearance bin like 15 years ago.
I genuinely don't care for anything outside of Fenty, Rare beauty, and about face beauty. Mayybe I have a mild interest in Haus Labs, I've just started trying their stuff. I actively despise celebrity skincare brands lol - why would I believe someone who spends thousands on cosmetic treatments on how their skincare line is superior?
I need to get me some Fenty sometime, their stuff looks amazing to me! What’s one of your favorite products?
I love the gloss bombs (but I know they have a reputation for being a "either you love it or you hate it") product. I also love their matchstix (The shade Amber is widely recommended as a perfect cool toned contour for fair-medium skintones), their highlighters, and cream blushes.
Steer clear of their twist up eyeliners - those suck lol
you got GOOOOD taste
I do love how tiny the tip on the Haus Labs felt tip liquid liner is. Helps me get a very thin line that no other felt tip can.
I really like the lipsticks by Drew Barrymore’s Flower Beauty brand. It’s drugstore prices but great moisture for a drugstore lipstick.
I’ve heard some good things about Flower Beauty! Also Drew Barrymore just seems delightful and sweet, like yes she’s already rich as fuck but every time things go well for her I’m like “yay, good for you!!” 🤣
Any Kardashian/Jenner Brand! (BTW, As worst) Lol
The new Haus Labs foundation is truly witch craft. I love it so much.
Dammit not another thing I need to try! I’ve heard such good things about her atomic lip products too!!
I haven’t tried a ton but the fenty beauty products I’ve tried have been amazing!! For the worst I’d have to go with the OG Kylie lip kits… SO thick and drying
I love how the Kylie stuff is just forever being sold at a deep discount because we refuse to let fetch happen 😂
