TL;DR Special moves vary by character and typically involve specific button combinations. Tutorials and online resources can help you learn them.
Character-Specific Moves
Each character in Mortal Kombat 1 has unique special moves that require specific button inputs. For example, Liu Kang's moves often involve simple directional inputs combined with punch or kick buttons [2:1]. Scorpion's attack is executed using "away, away, low punch"
[2:3], and his easy fatality involves holding block while rotating the joystick
[2:4]. These moves are designed to be accessible for players of all skill levels.
Learning and Practicing Moves
To effectively learn and execute special moves, players are encouraged to utilize the tutorial section of the game, which covers everything from basic movements to advanced techniques [3:1]
[3:2]. Practice modes allow players to see move lists and try different combinations, which is essential for mastering each character's abilities. Additionally, watching YouTube videos can provide insights into effective combos and strategies for specific characters
[3:1].
Customization of Moves
While there are no new moves to unlock per se, players can customize special moves for each character in the game's "kustomize" section [4:1]. This feature allows players to tailor their gameplay experience by selecting different move sets, especially useful in custom lobby games like King of the Hill
[4:2]. Customization offers a way to keep the gameplay fresh and adapt strategies based on opponents.
Execution Challenges
Some players may face challenges executing special moves due to input errors or timing issues. It's important to press the buttons quickly and confidently, as the game allows queuing of inputs ahead of time [5:1]. Using the d-pad instead of the analog stick can also affect execution, so experimenting with different control methods might help
[5]. Regular practice and patience are key to overcoming these challenges and improving performance.
thanks the best site
What do the #s mean? I’m on a ps5 and just got the game yesterday.
Not sure what you mean.
Press the cog icon and you can change the button layout to match PS's.
Thanks
Thanks for sharing this
Dude, Ty!
Any easy special moves my son can do on mortal kombat?
Reptile and Sub-Zero's slide, I think it's two buttons held + a direction.
Scorpion’s attack is away away low punch
Have him give Liu Kang a try. 3 of his moves are towards, towards and either of the punch buttons. Or towards, towards and high kick.
This is the one. Super easy fatality too, hold block and rotate the joystick
Up up HP at sweep distance is scorpions fatality
So I’m on Xbox how do you use your special moves. I know the attack bar has to be all the way up but like what buttons do I press and how do I do the special ability? (Not fatal blow/attack)
The tutorial section has everything from basic movement to advanced tech, try them out.
Play the tutorials
Just do the tutorial.
oh lord. Welcome to the fgc.
They all have different inputs. If you go into the tutorial, there’s a section for each character which goes over the basic ones, and then you can go to practice modes and see the move list and try all the different stuff out.
It also helps to check out YouTube videos about combos for the character you’re trying and see what some of the options are.
I installed the game yesterday and I’m already tired of seeing the same moves again and again and again. How many new moves can be unlocked for each character approximately?
Hey man, welcome to mortal kombat, I love this game so much. When you’re playing ONLINE 1v1, there’s like only 3 different move sets you can pick from to play. If you’re playing a custom lobby game like king of the hill with custom variations, you can utilize those. You can customize them in the customization
there are no moves to unlock, aside from brutatlities and fatalities. You can customize the special moves for each character in the "kustomize" section of the game. The moves you are seeing over and over ( if you're playing online are moves people have found to be good, and they often get abused when starting out. There is a LOT to learn about the game and the properties each move has.
Thank you
I'm trying to learn liu kang and when i impute the fire ball it does front 1 and it happens with other characters too with other combos too.
I'm on ps4 and i use the d-pad instead of the analog stick.
Faster, don't overthink pressing the buttons you can queue them ahead of time. So even a simple special attack/small combo just hit the buttons and it'll kombo out.
Yeah you think i didn't try that
You know what?
Yeah I think you didn't try it. Yeah you're on here moaning about basic attacks being executed instead of special moves.
Yeah. You know what? You're shite at the game. I didn't think you tried it. Get good.
Do the tutorials
Now i can't even do dragon fire WTF is going on??
Ur meat that’s what’s going on
faster
I was thinking about some of the best moves the characters have in the game (like Shao stand 2, Liu stand 1, Homelander forward 4, Conan jump 3(?) etc). I was wondering what are some other honorable mentions for this kind of category. What are some of the other strongest moves in MK1?
Conan f2 Reiko d4 Havik b2
Lol Havik B2. Lol. That shit gets stuffed a lot.
Havik D4 and sweep with mavado on the other hand...
Johnny f3
That's his mid? Definitely top 3 move in the game imo
Yes. I’m a johnny main and it’s 100% my best tool against any one.
Sektor f4, sindel b2, cyrax b2, mileena d1, havik b4
Isn't cyrax b2 the fastest overhead in the game?
No it's pretty slow and reactable. What's good about it is it low crushes poles and it's basically impossible to whiff punish. You can just spam it in neutral
Smoke F4 (If blocked)
Takeda B2 (Even if it’s not an Overhead like MKX)
Sub zero d1
I remember this game! You can unlock ida Blankenship as an astronaut!!
Good memories!
Good memories! Good times!
I was trying to do this with Rockem Sockem Robots, but no matter what prompts I used, it was determined to give me a fighter that looked like Jon Hamm. The best it was able to do was someone that looked like a Kartheiser-ish Hamm.
Betty vs Megan went hard
The finishing move with the rope was in poor taste imo
Nothing topped the Lawnmower fatality. Peak gaming moment of all time. Not even Iwo Jima came close to that.
Maybe for gore, but Joan’s move where she clangs her jugs together and her opponent’s head explodes was a foundational early memory for me.
👏👏
I came here. To say this.
She came here too!
I'm currently debating on getting Mortal Kombat 1 but before doing so I'd like clarification from people that have played the game already via the stress test on enhanced special moves.
How does it work? Is it more in line with how it was in Mortal Kombat 11 where you input your special moves and amplify/enhance it afterwards with the proper button or like it was in Mortal Kombat 10 where you need to press the enhance button at the same time that you press the button to complete your special move?
I can't get the timing down at all. I just keep calling up the cameos.
You're pressing the wrong button then, which is understandable as that was the amplify button back in MK11. It's the block button this time, but the timing is hard, I agree
It’s more like X which is probably my biggest gripe with it. MK11 really did it right and I’m not sure why they went with the old style.
I only tried a few characters but the timing was really wonky and it’s probably the biggest downgrade from Mk11 in terms of gameplay so far.
That shit was all over the place in the stress test.
Sub-Zero’s slide wouldn’t amp unless you did it a full second BEFORE pressing anything.
Most other moves were simultaneous. It was very sloppy and they’ll probably polish it a bit. But I blocked out how bad it was until I saw this post.
Its more like MKX where you amp immediately after doing the input.
Mk1 is a huge disappointment for me. I loved mk11 but both story and invasions is a let down
I’ve only been playing as sub zero, my last match was 76% special moves and I won and won quite a bit and it’s gone quite well but is there anyone better for special moves only
just use normal moves? I don't see why you want to only use special moves
Any character that zones
Liu kang
Cetrion
Robocop is more reliant on his specials than his strings
To clarify, a hit grab is a move that locks the opponent into an animation with damage they have to endure but is not actually an unblockable throw. Examples include Jax's Gotcha Grab, Scorpion's Demon Dash, Joker's Bird Boy Beatdown, and Kabal's Hook Grab. I am not an expert in fighting game terminology, so feel free to correct me on that. That's the definition I'm familiar with.
Please expand on why the option you voted for is your favorite in the comments or tell me about your favorite that isn't a poll option.
I voted hit grabs but parries are a close second

Parries aren’t the most practical but they’re my favorite to pull off
