Influence of Hamilton
Jorge Rivera-Herrans has been notably inspired by the musical "Hamilton." This influence is evident in his approach to storytelling and lyricism, as mentioned by fans who appreciate the combination of Greek mythology with a modern musical style [1:5]. The success and innovative nature of "Hamilton" likely served as a catalyst for Rivera-Herrans to explore similar themes and formats.
Passion for Greek Mythology
Rivera-Herrans' interest in Greek mythology is a fundamental inspiration for "EPIC: The Musical." The musical follows Odysseus through various sagas that align with the narrative of Homer's Odyssey [4]. His passion for these ancient stories drives the emotional depth and character development seen in the musical, resonating with audiences who share an appreciation for these mythological tales
[3].
Storytelling and Emotional Themes
The musical focuses on the emotional and mental states of its characters, particularly Odysseus. Themes such as ruthlessness and self-protection are explored, providing a rich narrative that delves into character development and philosophical contrasts [4:1]. Rivera-Herrans uses music to convey complex emotions and ethical dilemmas, which adds layers to the storytelling and engages listeners on a deeper level.
Community and Popularity
The growing popularity of "EPIC: The Musical," especially among fans of musicals and Greek mythology, has fueled Rivera-Herrans' creative journey. The positive reception and community support have encouraged further development of his work, including plans for a prequel based on the Iliad [5]. This community engagement highlights the impact of audience feedback and enthusiasm in motivating creators like Rivera-Herrans.
Potential for Future Adaptations
There is speculation and hope among fans for future adaptations of "EPIC: The Musical," such as animated movies or Broadway productions [2]. Rivera-Herrans' vision for the musical could extend beyond its current format, potentially exploring new mediums and reaching broader audiences. This anticipation reflects the cultural significance and potential longevity of his work.
I’m probably gonna get beat up for this, but I’ve never heard of this musical. I’m a big fan of Greek mythology, and have been since I was little. I got into a Hamilton phase two years ago. I wanted to make a musical surrounding Homer’s Iliad (and specifically) Achilles. BUT!!! I don’t want to feel like a fraud or a copy to someone who already has a musical related to Homer’s Odyssey. Also, I heard rumours flying he’s going to make one about the Iliad—- so it’s got me really panicked incase I worked hard for nothing. I’m young—-super young… but does anyone know how to reach him personally? Or at least know something about his current plans? Idk who he is, sorry.
Just do it anyways, yes he is planning on it eventually, but just because you had the same idea for a musical as someone else doesn't mean you shouldn't do it. As long as you stick to your own unique sound and stay away from Epics themes as to not look like a copycat you should be fine.
I'm really interested in Final Fantasy boss music and Hamilton, and that would be a sick combo. I heard one of his biggest inspirations is Hamilton. How do I make sure I "stay away from his theme"?
He's far from the only person who has done a musical adaptation of Greek mythology lol. Even if he wasn't, it would be unnecessary and weird to contact him and let what he's doing affect your own project.
Sorry, I was worried that one day I’d be called out for being a sappy copy/fraud. Thanks for ur insight :-)
No such thing as an original thought. Just do your thing and let miserable people on the internet be miserable.
What if I told you there are at least two musicals about The Wizard of Oz, PLUS Wicked?
Do. Your. Thing.
Thank you lol!...I've said this in another comment thread thing but: I'm afraid his 50 million fans will find and blame me. Also, that Polites name tag is so cool!
He's great but doesn't own Homer!
I'm just honestly really scared that his fans will one day find me, and they'll all begin to resent me for copying a guy I haven't heard of! (No offense to you guys, that came off as weird)
If he does a musical based on the illiad, he’ll probably do it in like 10 year. Or maybe more. You don’t have to worry about anything. If you want to do it, then do it. Jorge would say the same.
WILL JORGE RIVERA-HERRANS RELEASE A FREAKING MOVIE??? OR A BROADWAY SHOW???? BECAUSE I NEED ONE PLEASE I BEG OF YOU
It could be an amateur production or a big collab between some of the creators that have been accompanying Epic. Anything more than that will be dependent on mainstream visibility and getting Epic's name out to those with the power and money to attempt a bigger production.
Animated movie is most likely to come first, but will probably be a little while since that takes time.
true 😭
I think (feel free to correct me if I’m wrong) that if it did turn into a movie he wanted it to be in an animated style, like The Prince or Egypt :)
I personally think that would be really cool, but I haven’t heard about anything being in the works. However, with the Ithaca saga out now and how popular the musical has become, that could certainly change!
that’s what I was thinking too that animation style would be perfect, but yeah… I‘m hoping 🥲
Ok so I found this musical on Spotify after listening to some Steven Universe… Can all musical lovers just stop for a moment and give this man Jorge Rivera-Harrans his flowers? The lyricism, the voice changes, the story telling! I love Greek Mythology and musicals, I was beyond happy when I first heard this. No one can convince me it’s not fire! I need to talk to someone about this!!
I discovered it a couple months ago scrolling through Spotify, and am rediscovering it now! I think Jorge Rivera-Herrans is doing an amazing job so far. The writing can definitely be weaker in some parts, but songs like Ruthlessness and Wouldn't You Like are very well-written and captivating numbers. I can't wait to hear the full thing! And also his performance as Odysseus is absolutely wonderful, I mean his voice is a whole other conversation in itself like wow.
I did a musical with one of the members on the show years ago! I am excited for them, they are so talented!
They are! I can’t even pick a favorite song!
I do enjoy the musical as a whole (so far), however I can tell this is the first musical this guy has written. the lyrics are a bit clunky in certain spaces.
Whilst I agree with you on the slight clunkiness it’s actually his second concept musical
We have been listening to this non stop for months. It has quickly become my absolute favorite musical
It’s on my queue always!
Yo acabo de escuchar "keep your friends close" y no puedo dejar de escucharla...es maravillosa
I discovered this a while back but only got obsessed right before the release of the Thunder Saga. I got to watch the livestream and oh my gosh, it was such an amazing experience 😭 Jorge deserves all the credit he gets for his work, it really is amazing. I love EPIC so much!
Livestream?? Why am I always working when the good stuff happens? 😭
Aww you missed it?? That's sad 😭 I'm pretty sure he does live streams for every release though (and usually it only shows the saga being released, but the Thunder Saga one showed every song because of the Troy and Cyclops rereleases), so when the next saga releases there will be a livestream for it that you can hopefully watch! :)
I’m not a player, I’m a puppeteer.
No I don’t play, I puppeteer.
Pretty much that entire song is cringe. There are some good ones though, for sure.
I'm starting the Odyssey Unit today with my freshman, and I wanted to share something that I did last semester that my freshman absolutely loved (so much so that they still come and talk to me and my current freshman).
Last fall I came across (and then became obsessed) with Epic: the musical, which is written and produced by Jorge Rivera-Herrans (Jay). The musical is divided into nine sagas (Troy, Cyclops, Ocean, Circe, Underworld, Thunder, Wisdom, Vengeance, and Ithaca), and follows Odysseus chronologically through the story of the Odyssey. There are some creative liberties taken with the story, due to Jay wanting to focus more on Odysseus' psychological change in the story and in order to also emphasize his theme that he's trying to convey--ruthlessness is sometimes necessary in order to protect ourselves and those that we care about. However, I feel that for the most part it stays true to the plot of the story.
Last semester, I would have students read before watching (especially since there's not an actual full performance or movie--each song is a different video animated by an artist on YouTube). So for example, we'd read the Cyclops story in the textbook, then proceed to watch the Cyclops Saga.
I'm super excited to do this unit especially this semester because on December 25th last year, Jay released the final Saga--the Ithaca Saga. So now the musical is finally complete!
So my students will have easier access to look at the lyrics of the musical this semester, I created a "script" of sorts in Google Docs. I did cut, part of the song "Hold them Down" mainly because it's the suitors describing certain inappropriate things that want to do to Penelope.

Also, here's the link to the YouTube playlist I created with the animatics I use for class (Hold Them Down isn't in this, because I had to screenshare, then trim the part of the song I didn't want).

I have a student who has been having lunch in my room for weeks after she discovered the graphic novel of Odysseus and has memorized this epic - so coool! She has shared with me all her insights, lol. We are scheduled to start this unit next after we finish R&J.
Man, this makes me miss teaching The Odyssey. Easily one of my favorite works to go over with freshman.
Cool, thanks. Working on THE ODYSSEY also.
I think it's a great resource, but also a great way of discussing differences in ethics. Basically any set of standards I've seen talks about the differences in a text and it's adaptations with this as a basis. Different moral codes will create differences in the text (like Patroclus being just a cousin in Troy because ew gays)
Since the musical focuses more on the emotional/mental state of Odysseus, I also use it to address the character development standard, as well as the theme standard since the story explores the theme of "sometimes ruthlessness is necessary in order to protect ourselves and those we care about." It's also interesting to have students compare the philosophies of "Open Arms" (song 3) and then "Ruthlessness" (song 13), and seeing which one they align with more.
I pair it with O Brother, Where Art Thou? to do a comparison.
I tried this last year, but I felt my assignment was too vague. How do you have your kids approach this?
We read 12 episodes, 6 away, 6 at home, and take notes on the events, the role of the gods, Odysseus' character, and lessons to be learned. As a side activity, I have them illustrate an event and write a Homeric simile that could be inserted, and they do a gallery walk to judge effort, artistic, details, and enjoyable. A fun break to see some artwork, as well as a little creative writing and review. We watch the film, and as a class do a comparison chart. 5 columns: The Odyssey, Difference, Similarity, Difference, OBWAT. Then we run through the things they saw and take notes.
For example: Odysseus | Gone to war (noble) | Away from home | In prison (dishonorable) | Ulysses Everett McGill
They write an essay that explains how revisiting/reinterpreting old stories can give a new perspective. They choose three comparisons, provide a quote from The Odyssey that shows one, describe an event in the film, explain the comparison, and then its effect (similarities reinforce a character trait/lesson, differences change how we see them as in the following exemplar).
So, "Odysseus and Everett are similar because they are both away from home (quotes/evidence) but because Odysseus is away for a noble reason and Everett is not, Odysseus comes across as more honorable while Everett is clearly a scoundrel." Or the Cyclops and Big Dan are both monstrous for killing a companion. Penelope is a better wife than Penny.
I've shifted this from 9th to 8th grade, and it works well in teaching a 5-paragraph comparison essay using text evidence while meeting some of the standards related to multiple approaches to the same topic/work and use of various media. The 5-column organizer is a useful tool since it allows "same" (both are leaders), "different" (the Greeks die, Pete and Delmar live), or both (above example about being away).
Next post is some comparisons culled from IMDB, the World Wide Web, and my own observations. Sometimes a student will come up with a new one, like the Greeks sneaking past the Cyclops under sheep while in the film they are under KKK robes or under "sheets." A stretch, but I like the thinking.
Jorge Rivera-Herrans has confirmed that he’s officially working on a musical adaptation of the Iliad, can’t wait to see what he cooks up and see what criticisms on Epic he’ll take into account while making it!
I thought you meant the Blue Sky movie & was very confused.
I forgot he made that musical when I saw his name lol 😂😂😂
I’ve seen so many people just write off stage productions, say they’d rather it not happen, talk about it as if it is some impossible thing that will only limit Jorge and be unhelpful to EPIC as a whole.
I feel like, idk, maybe cuz of how big EPIC has gotten and the larger general crowd it has attracted has led to many fans not enjoying the idea of a musical on stage simply because many people here don’t like going to the theater or view theater/stage productions as either inaccessible or unfavorable.
And I get it, for many people seeing EPIC on a stage especially in the beginning will just be impossible. And maybe stage productions of musicals aren’t your thing. But it’s just so disheartening to see the sheer amount of people seemingly in love with a MUSICAL that (at one point) had its creator making a 2nd fitness account to one day play Odysseus himself, and make videos talking about ideas he had for stage set ups and choreography for certain songs, be so apathetic towards seeing EPIC have a stage play some day.
I too want to see an animated movie. I too want to see Jorge’s full vision explored in some crazy technological stage show some day. But I also just want to heard it peformed on a stage. I’d take a simple lineup with some loose costuming, I’d take just them singing on a stage of any kind. That stuff’s powerful!
Maybe it’s just because I’ve been following the journey for so long since back when the entire thing sounded like Hamilton and Athena was rapping the narration. But I guess just the overall decline in interest for musical theatre is making me feel down lmao
I’ve heard something mentioned about Jorge thinking about a circus like performance with more acrobatic capabilities. I would absolutely want to see live performances
This video by Jorge explains it quite well
And at 0:58, he mentions imagining on on-stage version of Epic more like Cirque Du Soleil than a Broadway show
I recently went to go see O because of that video and let me tell you, I can TOTALLY see what epic could be with that kind of technology it would be AMAZING
Maybe I’m biased here because I love Broadway shows, but I feel like EPIC would work perfectly with a Broadway style, and something like Cirque du Soleil wouldn’t do it justice, specially because EPIC not only has action, but also a lot of emotion
I’m someone who actually works in theatre, and I would say to the people who don’t think it could work in reality, I disagree! Yes, there would absolutely be artistic liberties taken with some more fantastical elements, but theatre has always been very creative with such things and I really think with the right group of designers and creatives, it could be an absolutely gorgeous and entertaining show.
Honestly, I think there should be multiple adaptions. I want to see an animated movie, a theatre production, everything I can get! I adore this show.
This is heartening! I would love to see Epic staged; I may not have much practical experience, but I've been picturing how I would try to stage certain elements since I started listening! The Ithaca Saga especially; I can already see how the scenery might be changed around Penelope as she is singing The Challenge. No idea how it would work in practice, but I can dream!
One of my friends and I were actually discussing Odysseus earlier and how it could be staged! It’d honestly so exciting, and I’ve seen so many incredible things done on stage with various shows, I’m certain it could be done in a way that would be fun and make sense, even if it isn’t necessarily the way it would be done in something like an animated film or even a live action one.
The people doubting that it could be done as a stage musical are really underestimating theatre as an art form imo
One of the things I've been struggling with a bit is how to make the gods (and more specifically Polyphemus) the larger than life characters they're portrayed as. Only thing I can think of is to have the gods be up above the mortals except in certain moments, and have Polyphemus be a voice off stage with his club coming down on that part.
Absolutely!! I love to think things through, I’ve told several people I work with that one of the only ways I would ever return to stage management would be if it was the only way I could work on Epic I would LOVE the chance to make this work onstage and run it every night, especially as an A1
I’m not personally against the idea of a stage play version of it. I just personally think it would translate better as an animated musical, or even just a live musical movie. But if it’s done right? It would be spectacular to see on stage. I wouldn’t envy whoever got Odysseus part though. That’s over 2 hours of almost non stop songs
There needs to be an Ithaca subplot happening in the background. It'll give more love to the characters of Penelope and Telemachus, as well as make the suitors feel like a much more looming threat, all while giving the Ody actor a chance to sit down and drink some fucking water, lmao.
It's a concept album loosely based on the Odyssey. So far, only 17 of the 40 songs have been released, but the creator, Jorge Rivera-Herrans, is great at posting snippets of future songs. He posts the songs in sagas (he's heavily inspired by anime).
The released sagas so far include the Troy Saga, the Cyclops Saga, the Ocean Saga, and the Circe Saga (which was released this Valentine's Day).
Some of the songs have gone viral on TikTok, and I've seen a lot of Percy Jackson fans use them for edits. The songs are amazing, and you can tell how much love and care Jorge put into them!
You can find the entire album on Spotify and here's a playlist on YouTube of animatics you can watch to understand the story.
Just thought I would share since this musical has been stuck in my head for days now, and I just wanted to see if there were other EPIC fans out there!
Tbh I was so happy that was a question in the last episode I recently got into it it is amazing.
Wait I just listened to the episode! Now, the musical is at least on Mike’s radar haha
Lol hopefully he checks it out at some point its just good content honestly.
I absolutely love this musical
Omg yay!
What are your favourite songs so far?
Mine are Just A Man, Full Speed Ahead, Warrior of the Mind, Remember Them, My Goodbye, Ruthlessness, and Done For.
Out of the unreleased/deleted songs, I really like Get in the Water, King, Little Wolf, and Man of the House.
I think I'm most excited for song 38, which is King/Odysseus.
Ruthless, There are Other Ways, Just a Man, Open Arms and Polyphemus
I am looking forward to Little Wolf, and the song the Prophet sings, and God Games
I've been listening to Epic for about a month now.
Man I love the whole work. But, HOW EPIC IS THE ENDING OF RUTHLESSNESS!?!?!
How do you even come up with such an epic melody? daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaamn.
It makes me feel invincible. <3 <3
God, Just a Man is so good. I really enjoyed There Are Other Ways and of course Ruthlessness is just… chilling in the best way possible.
I’ve been looking forward to Thunder Bringer ever since we got the first teaser for it and god the Zeus actor is phenomenal. I was looking forward to Let Me Be Your Light, since it’s the first song I ever heard from Epic, but I’m holding out hope for the Underworld Saga that we’ll get a reunion with Polites and it’ll be one of the unnamed songs 21 and 22.
Omg I love Ruthlessness! I loved Poseidon's singer. Sounds like a frat surfer dude who is pissed off.
Oh yeah, I am so excited for Thunder Bringer! I love Let Me Be Your Light, but I think it unfortunately got removed from the musical. >!I'd love for a Polites and Odysseus reunion though.!<
I hope once the musical is done, Jay records an album for the deleted songs, because I absolutely love Let Me Be Your Light and Man of the House.
I haven't listened to Let Me Be Your Light, but Man of the House was one of my favourite songs in the musical.
I'm completely obsessed with it
Same!!!
I just finished watching/listening to Jorge Rivera-Herrans' Epic the Musical for the first time. Is it possible for us to get a stage, fully animated feature, or any sort of adaptation in the future? (sorry if this topic has already been talked to death about)
Yes, that's the plan. For now we have a lot of fan animatics while we wait for the next step. Also, there are the official animatics commisioned by Jorge, but is not of the whole musical.
Epic of Gilgamesh. There hasn’t been any movies or whatever made off of it, and it’s the oldest myth in the world. And I feel like it would translate well to a musical.
If not that, then a musical off of the story of Sun Wukong in Journey to the West
Nick Flipp on YouTube (he actually did a reaction to Epic and he reacts to other musicals as well) is attempting to make a music based on the Epic of Gilgamesh! I haven’t really listened to it, but if you want to check it out you should give that a shot!
I want an Iliad musical because I want a cute little theme for Achilles and Patroclus that gets deployed to devastating effect after Patroclus dies <3
I’ve been getting so much Odysseus X Diomedes stuff fed to me by YouTube shorts and it’s just made me want to see how Jorge would portray their dynamic during the war (and how people would use that portrayal for more OdyDio content lol)
Also I want to see how he writes Agamemnon just because I think it’d be funny.
You wan Jorge to do a mythology. I want Jorge to make a space opera. we are not the same.
I really wanna see Journey to the West :3
I want Hermes to make a completely inappropriate cameo.
“Hermes! What you doing here?”
“You didn’t think you could have a musical without ME, did you, dawling? ✨”
Can’t wait for that 10 hour musical that’s not even the full story :3
(Lighthearted, by the way)
Damn, I forgot about Journey to the West. That would be so cool
The Illiad is an obvious choice, but I’d specifically love to see him focus on Hector. Most retellings focus on Achilles, but Hector has always been a deeply sympathetic and tragic figure to me; the REAL hero of The Illiad, and I’d love to see him get the narrative treatment he deserves. Especially because of the way Jorge chose to begin Epic, with the murder of Hector’s son being the first of many moral crises we watch Odysseus grapple with, I think Jorge could really get us all in the feels by chronicling Hector’s futile struggles to protect his home, his kingdom, and his family.
How many people do you believe will go watch Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey just because the gained interest through Jorge Rivera’s EPIC? The fact that this will increase viewership numbers for that movie and I know Hollywood won’t correlate the two. I already know a number of people interested in going to see the movie simply cause of that.
Red Introduced me and my sister to the Odyssey before we ran across Epic the musical, but I'm only planning on watching the Nolan film cause of Epic😅
I think you're grossly overestimating the audience of Epic. Nolan is coming off of Oppenheimer; he (and the marketing machine he works with) can do so much more than Mr Jalapeño. Even if Epic weren't around, I guarantee all of its fans would hear about the movie regardless
I like thinking that my subcultures have significant cultural sway and are more well known than I'd thought, but after my 20s I've learned that, for lack of a better term, the ocean of normies is incredibly vast.
JRH has 3m Spotify listeners; Ludwig Gorannsson has 3.8m. Hans Zimmer has 13m.
The opposite is more likely.
Came to say this.
It will not increase viewership numbers of the movie by any noticeable amount. We are talking about Christopher Nolan here bffr
I don't think a lot. I gained attraction to mythology from Horrible Histories Season 10 Episode 8 - Gory Greek Myths, then Overly Sarcastic Productions, then school, then EPIC.
