Daily Schedule of a K-Pop Idol

TL;DR K-Pop idols have highly demanding schedules that include early mornings, late nights, and various activities such as performances, rehearsals, filming, and more. Their schedules are managed by their companies, freeing them from mundane tasks.

Intense Workload

The life of a K-Pop idol is far from a typical 9-5 job. Idols often start their day as early as 3 am for music show recordings, which can involve multiple takes [1:1][4:4]. Their schedules are packed with performances, rehearsals, travel, recordings, and content filming, sometimes lasting up to 8 hours a day [1]. During comeback seasons, they might have less sleep and work through the night [5:2].

Managed Schedules

Idols benefit from having their schedules meticulously managed by their companies and staff. This management includes logistics like travel arrangements, appointments, and even holding onto personal items like passports [2:2][2:3]. This support allows idols to focus on their performances and other commitments without the mental load of scheduling and daily errands [2:8].

Activities Beyond Performances

In addition to their group activities, idols often engage in individual pursuits such as attending university (often online), learning languages, participating in sports, modeling, and maintaining social media presence [2]. Even when not promoting, idols may follow individual schedules for recording, beauty appointments, or lessons [3:2].

Nighttime Filming Norms

Filming during nighttime hours is common in the entertainment industry, including K-Pop. Pre-recording performances at night allows for better production quality and logistical efficiency [5:1][5:7]. Music shows often require pre-recordings due to the complexity of live broadcasts [5:9].

Cultural Context

The demanding schedules of K-Pop idols reflect broader work culture norms in South Korea, where long hours and intense workloads are common across various professions [4:1][4:7]. Despite the challenges, many idols are passionate about their careers and dedicate themselves to their craft [4:10].

being an idol is a job n its not a normal one!! their schedules aren’t like avg people with 9-5s who clock in and out. performances, rehearsals, travel, recordings, and content filming can take hours. that doesn’t mean idols can’t be overworked, because they definitely can and companies should take better care of them. but you can’t compare being an idol to a normal 9–5. some people think idols just train for a couple hours a day. no 😭 training 4–8 hours a day is normal for them. it’s not just about being overworked either. their bodies are constantly under pressure from intense choreos, performances, and promotions. injuries and getting sick happen, and that doesn’t automatically mean the company is abusing them. this is just the reality of the job!!

Also let's add the fact that most of idols have another job outside of being idols. We always have in mind the big idols, but most of them can't even pay back debts and need to find other way to do it. I remember a Crayon Pop member explaining that at some point they had to pay themselves for some group activities. I wanted to add this because some people always have this idea of "but nugu don't always have things to do" but in reality they still have other things to do since they LOOSE money by being idols :/

Not only that, but unfortunately, their job also has an age cap, so getting as much done as soon and as often as possible is a top priority for these companies. I'm sure there are exceptions, but there's a reason the younger groups are insanely active 24/7.

i've always thought idol promoting schedules are insane, specifically when it comes to music shows, like imagine having to wake up at like 3 am to record a performance for some trashy music show that lasts about three minutes. and afaik, they do multiple takes but the broadcast doesn't even include their live voices!

Genuinely, how do they do it all?

Posted by nxt2you · in r/kpoprants · 6 months ago

I am consistently amazed by how much these idols are able to keep up with. Many idols will not only be in an active group, which requires a ridiculous amount of time already, but also go to university (probably online), learn English, go to the gym regularly, play sports, produce/write music, do tourist activities, have an active role in fashions/brands/modeling, etc… on top of their daily 10 step skincare routine, staying in touch with family/friends, health care, posting on social media, sleeping, eating, etc… and many even have the time to play insane video games like Valorant, League, Overwatch, Genshin on top of everything else??

I can barely comprehend this. How are they able to do so much??? I know they are often exhausted and sleep in vehicles or on couches in between schedules but I still can’t understand how they are able to fit so much into their life time wise.

The short answer is the company/managers/staff. They’re the ones dealing with the logistics of their schedule, and that frees up a lot of time compared to if a regular person tried to do as much and had to arrange everything themselves. There’s also the concept of “mental load” which adults feel when they’re very busy and having to schedule and remember all the things they need to get done— just the act of having to think and remember it all can be physically exhausting, and the idols also have less of this to deal with.

Of course the idols are super hardworking as well and often sacrifice sleep, downtime, etc during comebacks and other busy seasons… they also get exhausted and stressed and all of that. This isn’t to discredit their hard work by any means! Just keep in mind that a lot of their regular adult responsibilities are taken care of (in whole or in part) by company staff.

I think most people would be surprised by what they can accomplish when their life is literally laid out in front of them and they're basically ferried from place to place to execute whatever is next on the agenda.

Obviously it still requires them to put in the effort and energy to do the actual thing that's in front of them so all credit for that, but their situation is definitely not the same as if you and I had to set out to do the same amount of stuff in a day or a week, when in addition to doing the stuff we would also have to figure out how it was all gonna fit together logistically and make sure nothing gets fucked. They do save a lot of energy and headache not having to deal with that aspect of their lives to the same extent as a normal person.

Came here to say this. They can do it because they don’t have to cook, clean, worry about bills, or even book their own salon appointments. Need to go somewhere? A driver takes them while they sit comfortably on their phone, reading, or working. Sports? The trainer comes to them.

It’s hard for us outside that world to grasp, but when you have time and don’t have to deal with daily mundane tasks, what you can achieve is insane. Just look at rich people, they travel, stay fit, eat healthy, ride horses, spend quality time with family, paint, and who knows what else… Having availability and someone handling the boring stuff for you is the real luxury.

I went to renew my passport, and it was hours of stress, forms to fill out, and the fear of messing something up, and that’s not even the visa application for my trip yet.

They’ve probably never even seen the immigration website because they have lawyers handling it. There’s so much we deal with daily that eats up our time, drains us, and keeps us from doing other things, stuff they never even have to think about, THAT’S HOW!

Yeah apparently idols don’t even have to worry about losing their passports since some manager or other will hold onto everything for them. It’s still and exhausting life. Jihyo lamented she wanted to take time off in LA for extra dance classes and English lessons and I’m like.. eh do you need more dance classes? But she’s the type that likes self improvement like Pilates and cleaning the house on her day off.

It’s not the same as a university student. I had to ferry myself to and from school, buy my own food, take on a job sometimes, even something as mundane as printing out slides for lessons would take an hour or two because of the school costs of print we all had to spend so much time just resizing every slide to fit 6–9 per page and make each slide extra large and double sided.

nxt2you · OP · 6 months ago

Ahhh when I look at it like that it makes a lot more sense. I guess I just think about when I was in university, it took over my entire life and I had to sacrifice a lot of things for it. It’s hard to me to think about keeping up with studying and classes alongside the idol duties.

They all work extremely hard but also it helps not having to worry about paying bills, doing laundry, going out for groceries, not having to make their own food, cleaning their home, planning out their schedules as their staff manages it all for them.

Older idols had to do some of these works, like making food and cleaning homes. In addition they went to schools / universities physically, not online schools.

If the idols were living by themselves, food and cleaning isn't a massive task. That doesn't really become a time suck until you're a mother.

Celebrities are known for having higher chances of anxiety. They don't have it all as well as you think. Most of them have breakdowns and probably have a lot of dark thoughts.

That said, being rich helps cut off the mundane parts of life like doing laundry, fixing your calendar, cleaning your place, doing grocery, scheduling appointments, even skincare— someone always does it for you. All you have to do is show up.

They're extremely busy during comebacks (and even then have a lot of downtime during music shows) but they also have a lot of downtime between comebacks especially when they don't have individual schedules/gigs, hence being able to do so many things. Also some idols are quite used to busy schedules since their trainee/student days and are able to cram as much as possible in a day.

I don't know what K-Pop idols do on daily basis and I'm pretty curious of how hard their life is as a Kpop idol. What is TWICE's or generally any Kpop idol's daily routine/schedule? Do they have breaks too? If so, how long?

In terms of days when they are not promoting the girls reasently said that they don't have to wake up early. We still have 2 of them in school however, I think they only attend when they have to but theoretically they go in the mornings when they don't promote. I think because there are 9 of them that they all follow individual schedules. Some may have to go and record, some have a appointment at a beauty salon. They also take individual lessons in singing and lessons in Japanese when they are preparing. The girls haven't been out of a promotion or touring cycle at all this year so they are always in rehearsals. When they learn choreography it's always taught on one day and then I think they spend another 2/3 sessions synchronising. You can see from the YoY TV that none of them are as happy with the choreo as they want to be when they shoot. For DTNA they didn't even know the whole thing when they shot the video. So I reckon a daily schedule when not promoting goes:

7/8:00am - school or beauty appointment, song writing in the hair salon (Jihyo said she did this)

11:00am - recording studio individualy

2:00pm -6:00pm - learn choreography

6:00 - 9:00pm - practice choreography or singing lesson or language lesson

9:00pm - 12:00am - personal time, maybe go out to eat with friends or go for a bike ride or go to the gym. Maybe chill at the dorm.

I think it’d be pretty difficult to pinpoint a daily schedule for Twice (and for other K-Pop artists in general) just by virtue of there being a variety of different events, tv appearances, filmings, photo shoots that they do. For example, their schedule probably involves a lot of early mornings and sleepless nights during Korean comeback promotions because a lot of these music shows do pre-recording at 3am or something and they have to do makeup 4 hours in advance. If magazines want them to do a photo shoot, they’ll fit that in the schedule. If they have performances, they’ll fit that in the schedule too. Their schedule revolves around whatever jobs they have at the moment. There were times during Cheer Up promotions, for example, where they didn’t sleep for 2 days and still had to go to a variety show. And unbeknownst to the fans, they are also probably preparing for the next album (i.e. jacket shooting, MV filming, recording, choreography practice). I think they get the occasional day off here and there when time allows, and they have a few days off every now and then to visit friends and family. But it’s certainly no 9-5!

After watching the kian84 video, I really don't know why anyone would want to be an idol

Posted by citizend13 · in r/kpopthoughts · 1 month ago

Kian84 - (webtoon artist turned variety star) sort of did a ride along with "Say My Name" - I didnt realize how exhausting promotions are. Unfortunately there are no english subs but its sort of structured like a day in the life so you can follow along. I can sort of get why some idols can get pissed, hell I dont know how they find it in themselves to try to be cheerful.

Day starts 3 am, they travel to the studio, hair and makeup takes an hour or so - then they do rehearsals and do the final shot. all through that, they wear skimpy outfits and when not on call they wrap up because I dont think they heat those waiting rooms. after filming they do a fanmeet outside, then do individual schedules. then late in the afternoon, they have fansigns. to top it off, their day doesnt end there, they have practice in the evening. You really have to want this life. you can watch it here; https://youtu.be/G0sOX1ZgCR0

There's probably various reasons why, but I bet the time (and energy) commitment is why a bunch of senior idols (Onew and Taeyeon, for example) have chosen to not promote on music shows. I know fans want to see it... and obviously, I wouldn't say no to seeing it either... but I totally get why they may choose not to go. It takes up the whole day, it doesn't give you as much visibility as it used to in the past, and it's exhausting.

84 upvotes on reddit
goingtotheriver · 1 month ago

Senior idols who do go often only do pre-recording (and often at a slightly better time like late night or mid-morning, not the 2-5am ones) and then show up again for the interview + first place announcements. They go do other schedules, eat etc. in the time between. So it's a little better, but I still understand why they might choose not to go.

it's because senior idols no more need music shows to promote. they already have established fans who will buy their album. meanwhile, rookies need it. many fancams and stage go viral and help them get recognized.

humans can be passionate about stuff and dedicate themselves to it, it's not everyone, but it's not uncommon too.

think actors for example, saw an interview with David Corenswet (new superman) and he said he spent TEN HOURS in his costume, hanging by wires in his trunks shooting flying scenes. For pirates of the Caribbean they spent the whole day in water, feeling cold and wet. Lord of the Rings, hours putting on make up and prosthetics to them climb a mountain in the snow to shoot. Why would anyone want to be an actor?

or an athlete who has to train every day, including holidays and weekends, while minding their diets for whole years for competitions they know their best shot is coming 20th, why would people want to be athletes?

or compare to people who play instruments for 12+ hours a day cause they love it, authors who spend weeks sleeping 3, 4 hours a day to write what they want before inspiration leaves, ballerinas who stay in the studio all day and then have performances at night, normal people who get home after working the whole day and still go through the night reading or playing games... I could go on and on, but I think the why you talk about is a much deeper question on psychology and biology of humanity, why and how do humans endure so much for what they want? Why do some of us even like these strenuous conditions? Why some humans simply don't and give up as soon as it gets hard? etc and etc

I think one thing people need to understand is work culture in South Korea. This schedule isn’t limited to idols.

Most young graduates in Korea work as unpaid or poorly paid interns for between 1-3 years minimum. They often get up early and finish work extremely late.

It’s almost impossible to take time off work for holidays or personal leave and if they complain they are criticised and told that they are the issue.

It’s part of the problem with regard to the birth rate.

The bigger issue is that retirement can be imposed and it’s legal to move older staff members to lesser paying roles despite their experience or time with the company. So many have to save from a young age for retirement.

It’s also widely accepted that many young people will never be able to own property these days.

Being an idol is hard and difficult but it’s a gamble that could pay not only for your future but your families too.

Too many people comment on Korean culture and life without ever truly understanding the culture and the history of why it is how it is.

People forget that until the mid nineties South Korea was extremely poor and still to this day this has left a huge impact on its society.

Being an idol isn’t something I would choose for myself but I would never look down on someone for trying.

idol schedules in the middle of the night?

i’ve noticed after watching a lot of behind the scenes or vlog-style content from groups (NCT in particular), they offhandedly mention having schedule obligations or filming things at insane times, like going to the recording studio at midnight or filming music shows at 3 am.

does anyone know why this is the norm? is this a korea thing or just a kpop thing?

From watching different people's vlogs, I think the majority of people in the entertainment industry tend to be night owls, or that is the easier schedule to maintain during off time that matches their working hours.

Yes, they work long hours, but having midnight or 3 am start times doesn't mean that they aren't sleeping. Instead of work starting at 8/9 am it can start at 2/3 pm, i.e. swing shift.

73 upvotes on reddit
goingtotheriver · 3 months ago

This is definitely true too. During comeback season idols do seem to sleep less but outside of that a lot of the ones I follow (including NCT from OP’s post) regularly talk about waking up at midday or later. I think you’re right that it makes sense to just maintain that schedule in off time so it’s not such a big shock when they have to do late night schedules.

27 upvotes on reddit
Mani_srao · 3 months ago

It's actually a entertainment industry thing in general. If there is a scene being shot in the morning, usually the set prep starts at 2-3 AM, the actors arrive at 3-4 AM. Hair and makeup for 1-2 hours and they have to start by 6-7 AM. This is an example of a quite tight schedule.

and when concerts happen. Normally ends at around 10 PM. By the time they get to the hotel, remove makeup, unwind, have dinner, calm down from the adrenaline from the show and sleep it gets really late as well.

With music shows where there is hours and hours of waiting time, idols get up around 3 am as well.

23 upvotes on reddit
NE0099 · 3 months ago

It’s not particular to idols. If you’re filming on location, you have to work when the conditions are right and you can get a permit. I used to work in an area of New York where a lot of stuff was filmed, and there’d be crews out at all times of the day and night. The same is true for musicians. Most groups don’t have the money and know how to do professional quality recordings on their own, so they have to go in whenever their schedules align with the studio’s schedule. If the studio is in demand and you’re not a top group that can convince them to clear their schedule, that can be some odd hours.

46 upvotes on reddit
127ncity127 · 3 months ago

To add to what others have said: music show filming happens at night because they pre-record the performance and then do it again later in the day live. When you have lots of groups pre-recording then you have no choice but to have a schedule like that. This is the same for award shows

Recording music for albums is usually at night because they’re filming other content in the day (ads, YouTube content, dance practice)

Also filming outside happens at night because of filming permits and the lack of studio houses. Seoul is densely populated and there is a lack of Hollywood type production houses where you can build a set that big or just shut down a street to film a scene like they do in NYC.

And finally, because Seoul has a lot of traffic, they usually have idols traveling at night time to avoid the traffic and crowds.

Why do they prerecord the performance if they’re just gonna do it live again later?

6 upvotes on reddit
wickle_moonery · 3 months ago

they usually perform two different songs. pre-recording is the title track, live performance is a b-side promotion. the pre-recording does have an audience of just their fans, although smaller groups might combine audiences (ateez and skz used to combine audiences back in the day) and they do about 3-4 takes. the live performance is crucial for up-and-coming groups because the audience is a mix of all the fans from the groups that did pre-recordings the day before.

2 upvotes on reddit
punk_mary_poppins · 3 months ago

Pre-recordings are for a couple of reasons - they get a larger scale production (different camera angles, cameras on stage, bigger and more elaborate staging than what is available at the live recording studio), and logistically the live recording would be impossible without the prerecords. They move from song to song so quickly that there is no time for everyone to perform live.

The “live performance” a group does during the broadcast after a pre-record is solely for the benefit of the studio audience, and is often incomplete to give time to set the stage for the next actual live performance.

For example, when I went to see an Inkigayo live recording last year NCT Doyoung sang a bit of his song but mostly goofed off and interacted with the audience. IVE’s Yujin joined her bandmates on stage to dance to HEYA - she’s a host and was in a doctors outfit for Children’s Day while they were in their stage outfits, it was hilarious and adorable. And Seventeen only did half of Maestro because they were last on the schedule and they needed to get everyone up on stage in time for announcing the results.

13 upvotes on reddit
127ncity127 · 3 months ago

if a performance is live they cant have the production we're used to seeing. The final product has different camera angles and different shots.

its really unique to kpop music shows. TRL and 106 & Park didnt have that but KPOP is about perfection so they pre-record everything.

Even ""live"" performances are pre-recorded. Idols often go into the booth and sing live and mimic the concert hall, award show, music show etc and thats the backtrack thats played. So anytime you see a performance and people are saying its live...unless its them on weverse/ig live doing something acapella...its not really live.

This is normal for most of entertainment. I had call times like that all the time when I worked in film and television, whether I was in front of the camera or behind it. For the music shows, pre-taping is in the morning. They have to be there hours ahead for hair, makeup, etc and some people are going to get the earliest pretape time slot because they can't all have the later ones. For music videos or other filming that may be outside, lighting matters. If you're filming daytime, you arrive before sunrise so you can be Camara ready as soon as the sun is up. If you're filming nighttime, you will be arriving in the afternoon so you can be camera ready when it's dark and filming likely all night. This has nothing to do with Korea. Entertainment Jobs are just rarely 9-5.

You're welcome! One of the things that definitely doesn't help is I've noticed a lot of groups seem to have one hair person and one makeup person with them for a lot of things, so if the group has 7 members, that's hours of prep to be camera ready as a group.

Which K-Pop idols do you think have the busiest schedule?

IIRC, Lee Know had hosting duties and right as the show ended he took a flight straight to LA for Stray Kids' performance for KCon LA. Absolutely wild to do.

Wonyoung lately. It's insane how many things she's filming and doing amongst the constant music promotions

Who is a group who lets us in on their schedule quite a lot?

Posted by mollyplop · in r/kpophelp · 2 years ago

I am always so curious about kpop groups’ schedules. (And therefore behind the scenes videos about their daily routines) Are there are who let us see them fairly in depth?

Thank you so much! :) ♡

i don't really watch them so idk if that's exactly what you're looking for, but seems like a lot of super junior members have vlogs from schedules on their personal youtube channels.. like from concerts, oversees schedules etc.

NCT! They’ve done two relay cam series where a different member has the camera for an hour or two and shows you what they’re up to. It… means you have to watch Doyoung be like just super sleepy for ten minutes when he got assigned that like 4AM slot though lol.

They also have a lot of footage of behind the scenes of recording sessions, MV shoots, music show dressing rooms etc.

Here’s NCT Daily’s YouTube page.

Girl Group tripleS have daily vlogs (AS IN EVERY DAY) where you can watch what they did for the day (if they're only in their home) or when there's schedules

If you want to see a bunch of the daily routines kind of thing check out the show The Manager. It gives you a lot of look into just the normal routine of idols from the managers' perspectives. Here's a clip from one episode to give you an idea.

Most groups also tend to have a channel that shows behind the scenes of photoshoots, performances, etc besides their company channel.

In particular, Wonho is very much a vlogger and likes to take his fans on his day to day routines quite often whether through his YT channel(s) Ohhoho or his vlives.

Do you know how idols especially those who are still students, catch up with school?

Posted by Legal_Potential4720 · in r/kpophelp · 2 months ago

I’ve always wondered how do idols especially those who are still high school students catch up with their studies especially when they have very hectic schedules does anyone know how?

Depends on the idol, their company, and how serious they try to keep up with school.

A lot of Idols use whatever free time they have to study/do school work. Fromis_9’s Jiheon was known for being a hard working student even with how busy she was with idol stuff. She did a study with me video that became popular, and you could see her during Music Show behind the scenes videos of her studying. Even during car rides.

tripleS has a lot of members still going to school. In their recent music video behind the scenes they would film their scenes early in the morning and then go to school with their makeup and outfits they had on for the shoot.

They often have tutors. Some may drop out of high school as it is not compulsory.

And not only high school but there are some very popular and busy idols that also went and got both undergrad and master's degrees at university. G-Dragon and Taeyang got both undergrad and graduate University degrees while juggling multiple tours and album releases (solo and group). So it is possible. I am sure there are more, I just don't have names.

I forgot to add that I have heard some idols high schools allow to count practices, etc similar to an elective class like art/fitness/language skills, etc. So they only go part time to school and the rest of school hours are counted toward thier dance, singing and other idol work.

They usually don't really. Most attend art high school where they have far lax schedule and rules which grant them graduation even if they miss like half of the school program.

i always assume they do online classes; the last time i googled most of BTS attended a type of cyber university for their bachelors/masters

I think it depends on the company and the kind of schedules the idol has.

For the ones I follow, if theres no schedule, they tend to attend school in the day and dance/singing practice at night.

If they have schedules, then they'll not attend school on those days that are booked. They probably have to catch up but I've seen them studying during the downtime during the music show days as there tends to be a long amount of downtime.

But yea it's tough to be an idol student as imo being a student is still their number one priority and hopefully companies will see it this way and let them attend school as much as possible.

Edit: Most of them probably attend an arts high school so the curriculum is probably not as intense as a normal high school.
