What Redditors are Saying

What is the Hardest Final Fantasy Game?

TL;DR

  • Final Fantasy III: Notorious for its brutal endgame with no save points in the final dungeon [1:1], [5:5].
  • Final Fantasy XI: Considered extremely challenging due to its MMO nature and complex mechanics [2:6], [3:5].
  • Final Fantasy XIII: Requires understanding of its combat system, making it difficult for many players [1:4], [2:4].

Final Fantasy III

Final Fantasy III is frequently cited as one of the hardest games in the series, particularly due to its punishing final dungeon. Players must navigate through a lengthy area without any save points, facing multiple bosses along the way. This requires significant preparation and strategy, as dying means starting over from the beginning of this section [1:1], [5:5]. The game also has specific job requirements for certain dungeons, adding another layer of difficulty [4:1].

Final Fantasy XI

As an MMORPG, Final Fantasy XI stands out for its complexity and difficulty. It demands a deep understanding of one's role, the game's mechanics, and effective teamwork. The game was notorious for being unforgiving, requiring significant time investment and strategic planning [2:6], [3:5]. Although it has become more accessible over time, it remains a challenging experience compared to other titles in the series.

Final Fantasy XIII

Final Fantasy XIII is often mentioned as one of the harder games in the series due to its unique combat system that limits grinding and requires strategic use of paradigms. Players cannot simply overpower enemies through leveling up, as the game caps character development at certain points [1:4], [2:4]. Bosses like Barthandelus and Orphan are particularly challenging, demanding a good grasp of the game's mechanics [4:9].

Other Notable Mentions

  • Final Fantasy II: Known for its unconventional leveling system, which can make the game difficult if not approached correctly [3:1].
  • Final Fantasy Tactics: While not a mainline entry, it's often regarded as challenging due to its tactical depth and potential for soft-locking if not managed well [3:7].
  • Final Fantasy VIII: Difficulty can vary greatly depending on how players engage with the junction system. Proper use can make the game easier, but neglecting it can lead to a tough experience [2:1].

Each Final Fantasy game presents its own challenges, and what one player finds difficult may differ for another based on playstyle and familiarity with RPG mechanics.

ORIGINAL POST

The only FF games I've completed are VII and the original Tactics. Playing through the PSP Dissidias at the moment and it makes me want to play more of the mainline games. However my biggest concern with turn based RPGs is the difficulty level. If a JRPG has too easy of combat it's hard to keep my attention. Which is why a series like Etrian Odyssey is a series I adore. But those games lack deep or engaging narratives, something FF is known for having.

It's important to note that the only way I can play these games are through PS3(PSN store), PS4, PSP, and 3DS(DS). So please give your input on what you think are the most gameplay engaging titles of the series.

FFXIII is the hardest post SNES Final Fantasy.

BUT I think Final Fantasy III is the hardest overall, at least because the final dungeon can be brutal without lots of grinding. But the story is bare bones.

FFIX I think has a good balance of (excellent) story and difficulty. But grinding still fixes all that. But the final boss can get you if you aren't prepared.

Generally the story of each FF aren't ever too hard. But the optional stuff can be challenging if you seek it out. Ozma in IX is famously difficult.

I agree with FF13 being the hardest. I think I died in FF13 probably at least twice as much as in 7, 8, 9, 10, 10-2 and 12 combined. Of course you can restart the fight you died in immediately afterwards, but still...

If you don't mind my asking what makes you think XIII is hard at all?

It's been awhile since I played (got it when it first came out) but I don't think I ever really died much less needed a phoenix down or potions hardly. You just sit back and let you time meter fill then press x. You don't even have to pick any attack or move because the game selects what move you do depending on how long you wait for the bar to fill.

The game is pretty straight forward and tells you what to do. I don't really remember any secret bosses and such and never really felt any sense of a problem. Beautiful game at the time but I was not fond of it at all. I did get it on steam awhile back on sale just to give it another try one day now that it's been a few years and just see but I don't think it's very difficult at all?

It's not really difficult, but more difficult as in that most of the game your crystarium grid (is that what it's called?) and party is locked off. So you can't really grind your way to victory like the rest of the series. So there's more set up involved in your abilities and job switching.

Now none of it was hard for me, but XIII is a little more restrictive until late game and every now and then you see people say some of the bosses are hard, like Barthandelus.

There ARE hunts to do though post game. There's a secret boss that was pretty hard imo.

Really though, FF games aren't hard. There is a spin off that is quite difficult though. Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light.

FFXIII is the hardest FF of the post SNES era because it asks for a somewhat higher minimum level of strategy and tactics than the other FF games. This is partly because your development is capped and partly because stat increases and leveling in FFXIII are less impactful overall than in most RPGs.

With that said, FFXIII is not a hard RPG in an absolute sense. The FF series has aimed for a wider, less hardcore audience since the SNES era, and thus strives to be challenging instead of difficult--at least for story completion.

The hardest mainline FF games are definitely the earlier ones, as many people have covered in other responses (or possibly the MMOs, but it's hard to compare multiplayer difficulty with single player difficulty).

Final fantasy 3 is really difficult but it's through a difficulty spike at the end of the game and it's not really 'difficult' in terms of needing a good strategy or anything you just need hp to survive and it's more of an annoyance.

Final fantasy 4: 2d versions-very easy 3d versions-very hard

Final fantasy 5 is pretty hard and having a good strategy really helps. Fives gameplay shines although the story isn't the best.

Final fantasy 6-9 are all pretty mediocre. If you know what your doing they are very easy if not they can pose somewhat of a challenge. 8 can be the easiest or hardest depending on how you play. Other than that the other three are pretty balanced.

Final fantasy 10 has some tough fights and will have some battles that will challenge you (unless you grind a lot) most of them come mid to end game. There are also lots of postgame bosses which require lots of grinding and stat building if your into that.

Final fantasy 12: the zodiac job system is pretty easy however the original is slightly more difficult. There are a few post game bosses which pose a great threat on both versions which can be fun but the game itself isn't to hard.

Final fantasy 13 is a mixed bag. A lot of battles are pretty easy but damn there are some really tough fights mixed in. It starts of very slow but as the game goes on combat improves and so do the battles. 13 isn't for everyone.

I can't comment on one two and fifteen cause I ain't played them.

When people say "it plays itself", they are referring not to the difficulty of the game itself and more of the fact that the flow of battle tends to be "press the auto battle/heal button, switch paradigm, back to auto battle". But two things:

  1. You can reduce any FF down to this if you really wanted to. In most FF games you mainly spam the attack option and occasionally heal when needed. I just think FFXIII made it seem more noticeable.

  2. Despite this, FFXIII generally was hard for many players when it first came out. Because if you didn't know what you were doing/got surprised by a powerful attack you could get destroyed in one blow. In fact, I think even the developers knew the game might be difficult for some because every battle has a retry option incorporated.

I'd say FFII NES casual. Yes i know you can cheese the game, but no one knows that on their own without looking it up. FFXI is also very difficult. One of those two.

I have to agree with Final Fantasy 2. If you don’t cheese it, you’re in for a very painful experience.

If you only fight battles normally to try and get stronger, you’ll:

  1. Fight a ridiculous amount of battles
  2. Likely have to start over several times (you might raise your defensive stats too high to be able to take enough damage in winnable fights to gain health)
  3. Go insane

I attempted to play it without cheese once and almost went insane in the process.

That is definitely not true if we're just talking about storyline completion. At a minimum, FFVI, FFVII, FFVIII, and FFIX are beatable without grinding. The mainline FF series started aiming for a casual audience during the SNES era and has not been difficult enough to require grinding since that point.

3 upvotes on reddit

In 8 the monsters scale with your level. However since junctioning is the main way to power up your stats many will keep level low and then equip powerful magic through refining. If you play the game normally then you get a balanced difficulty. If you restrict yourself through not refining and not grinding to get 100 of each magic and your level is high this game can become really hard. It's a very customisable difficulty and you can personalize to your taste. As far as raw difficulty it does lack as there are so many ways to exploit the game but there are many ways to challenge yourself. For raw difficulty try 4 or 5. 3 is a bit of a pain in the arse tbh unless you enjoy grinding. But if you like to challenge yourself and can hold back from exploiting then 8 may be a wise choice.

As others have said, 3 has a difficult endgame. You must slog through a dungeon, beat a boss, then slog through another dungeon, beat four more bosses then the final boss with no save point at all. So it comes down to stats, items, and equipment. There are also a few other points in the game where certain classes will make life easier or more difficult (there’s a dungeon where enemies will continue to multiple if hit by anything other than a dark weapon).

I remember 5 being pretty challenging, but it’s been a long time since I’ve played through it.

The original FF Is challenging, but that may be due to the absence of QoL improvements that came later in the series. The Dawn of Souls version can have a challenging beginning, but the difficulty really falters as the game goes on.

10 has some challenging fights, but the real trouble I run into is never having enough ability spheres early on, so stat progress halts at times (newer versions have mitigated this though).

I can’t really say if 15 is difficult because I spent the first 60 hours of game play doing side quests without any meaningful progress on the actual story and so I was grossly over leveled. I can say that your teams AI is atrocious and you’d be better off killing them yourself just so they’re out of your way.

Of course, lots of FFs contain post game content with powerful super bosses that usually have no bearing on the main story, and usually require some level of grinding to beat.

Hardest Final Fantasy games?

Hi, ive played FF1,7,8 1and7 was not really hard and the fight maked much fun, but somehow 8 was so crazy hard that i cant win without savestates, idk what i did wrong the skillthings or rpg element are really strange in this game and didnt make fun for me, but ive tried my best on it and watched for some uprades or builds, but i was just crazy bad in the end..

My question is now, i wanna play the other ff games to, the next are 9 10 11 and then the older ones 4 5 6, is there a ff game which has crazy weird rpg elements or is just a really hard game? If there is, do you have a tip for this game? I played many jrpgs but I didnt expect that ff8 goes so heavy challenging in the end, it really surprised me idk.... i did everything so good as possible but somehow my builds never work and are extreme low idk why this was a so complicated system...

VIII has level scaling, so if you’re not Junctioning properly you’re going to get wrecked.

But the hardest FF game is definitely XIII overall. It actually demands that you understand the combat system.

That's probably the right answer.

You can out-grind all the other games. XIII level caps you at certain chapters, so you actually need to know how to paradigm shift properly.

19 upvotes on reddit
Malleus94 · 2 years ago

I think VIII is definitely harder than XIII, even if slightly.

I think that they both have a lot in common: to be effective, you have to understand what are you doing, and the bosses more often than not don't play fair. FFXIII has the problem that if your main character dies, it's automatic game over, but FFVIII has almost equal problem that if a character isn't junctioned is almost a dead weight.

But overall FFXIII does a better job at teaching you how it works (despite holding your hand definitely for too long), and bosses never reach the level of bullshit thrown at you that FFVIII reaches, to the point that you can actually cheese most of FFVIII by abusing Aura and limits, but the final boss is actually balanced around that. Even with the best junction on Squall and Zell, and Rinoa in the back healing and spamming triple+meteor, it took me good 5 minutes of unrelentlessly attacking the last phase before I won.

Also if you die in FFXIII you can reload from immediately before the fight, while FFVIII is potentially much more punishing, especially with random encounters like the Marlboro.

8 is only hard if you level up. It is easy as heck if you keep yourself extremely low leveled, and junction 100 of whatever spell in your stat slot that boosted it the most. I just recently beat the game at level 16 from just accidentally killing enemies.

Yes, FF8 is the one you can't out-grind. None of the other FF titles are like this, so if that's your main strategy, you should be fine.

If you instead want to win while being under-leveled, I think the hardest one is FFX, while ironically, the easiest is probably FF8.

The DS ports of III and IV like someone else mentioned are brutal.

As for original releases, FF II has a unique leveling system, and while I don't remember the game being too hard, people say it is up there in difficulty. The unique leveling system adds to the challenge. I had fun with it though.

Final Fantasy Tactics is probably the hardest FF game I've played. But, only because I haven't found any of the main entries to be too hard. And I've played them almost all of them(I haven't gotten too far in V or XIII)

IV is a lot tougher for sure, I had mixed it up with FFIII in saying it was kinda easy and I got reamed for it lmao. At least III has the job skills and potential for cheesing (shurikens), even with that long ass final dungeon

Yeah, it's 100% FFXI. That game has challenge at every corner, and while lots of levels and talent points can help as well as great gear, if you don't know exactly what you're doing, your role in the party, and how it synergizes with others, you're dead. And not just dead, but you lose 1/10 (iirc?) of your experience points to the next level.

Just leveling was an insane challenge originally, to say nothing of seeing all the lore of the game. I played through all the stories from the original base game until Wings of the Goddess, and started Adoulin but the story there wasn't complete yet.

You will not only die in FFXI if you don't know what you're doing, but you also won't even be able to trigger story quests or likely even navigate the world without some kind of guide. It throws you in and says "good luck, better talk to more experienced players, or you're f***ed."

What's insane is that with the level of challenge and obtuseness comes a series of "aha!" moments that are nearly never-ending, allowing a near-constant state of player discovery. That applies to the main stories, the side quests, the battle mechanics, and a lot of the bizarre side-modes that have been dropped through the years (like going to Al'taiu for AF2 gear runs).

Around every corner in FFXI is another gameplay mystery to be solved, and most of them want to kill you.

The challenge in other Final Fantasy titles isn't even remotely close.

FFXI is what finally convinced me to give Square's harder, more obtuse series SaGa a try, and now I like it even more than Final Fantasy.

Anyone who isn't saying XI has just not played XI because... it's the hardest, no contest! Like you say it's not even close.

It's not just the amount of time investment, grouping up and obtuseness but on top of that a need for true and deep understanding of your job, on the fly thinking, a long list of stats, buffs, effects, items, equipment, that have potential uses for different moments, enemies, and states; a lot of opportunity for theorycrafting

The question was "hardest Final Fantasy games?"

Whether or not you agree with SE's decision, FFXI IS a numbered, mainline Final Fantasy game. It's an MMO...RPG...made entirely in Japan...with levels, theorycrafting, build management, and a narrative...how exactly is it not a JRPG?

2 upvotes on reddit
sarabim · 2 years ago

DS version of III and IV are by far the most difficult.

As for VIII, you make things a lot harder for yourself by leveling up. The more you level, the more important it is to make good use of the junction system. As for tips... I have none. I played this game by avoiding gaining levels and drawing at least a 100 of everything, so it was easy.

Tactics. If you are going by numbered titles only and no MMO, then 2, because that final dungeon is a beast. You can grind stats all you want. At the end of the game you have a super tough multi level dungeon with limited inventory for potions and no saves.

The PSX FFT is dead easy. Outside of like, a couple of fights that are either badly designed and you need a non-support setup for Ramza (Weigraf), bad AI screwing you (any protect mission where the person you are supposed to be protecting goes suicidal), or very early fights before you have access to a lot of abilities (Dorter Slums).

To each their own I guess haha. There were a few places where I got real fucked up. Dorter Trade City was one, the rooftop battle, and that battle with wiegraf and all those archdemons. So I basically named off everything you mentioned. Those fights were harder than anything I faced in the numbered FFs.

Unless we count post game content...

XI is probably the most difficult game in the series for me. I’m not big on MMOs period, but I really have given XI a try and it was too much for me back then. Granted, I got it at launch and struggled with it from the jump. I’ve heard that it has gotten much better over time and people still love the shit out of it! I ended up just watching the story on The Youvideo. I got a little into XIV and it was fun and easy to learn, but again I just don’t feel that attraction to MMOs so I didn’t stick with it. I have been keeping up with it too, and am interested to see how this final expansion turns out!

I find IV DS to be punishing for the stupidest of reasons. The augment system is irreversible, so good luck if you gave the party members the wrong one, the process to getting ultimate weapons is annoying and as grindy as the OG, the monsters have all been buffed from the OG, and frankly the way they dispersed QoL changes is inconsistent and far too light.

II is grindy, but that's its hallmark, and is easy once you grinded enough.

III is grindy in all versions, and has a hefty spike towards the end, but you can make the argument the rest of the game is just too easy here.

V... is nice.

VI is many, many excellent things, but it's definitely not a challenge. Really relaxing to get stuck into though.

VII is challenging, right up until you learn how to break the game in two. Secrets are hidden everywhere in this game, and I love it.

VIII actively punishes you for levelling up too early. Take that as you will.

IX does something similar, but outside of superbosses, it's not too bad. Some of the strategies are bizarre though (ah yes game, clearly I was meant to use a TENT here).

X separates levels and stats nicely. It is the only game to do it optimally IMO, which makes it all the more frustrating that they stopped doing it after this game. Difficulty wise, it's fine.

XI is a notoriously finicky MMO, that's very much an acquired taste for difficulty.

XII has OG and Zodiac. OG gets reeaaal annoying at times. Zodiac however is fine.

XIII shouldn't be difficult, however there are a couple of issues. Fights don't drop Gil, so you have to grind for items to sell, the auto battle system is... less than efficient, grinding efficiency fluctuates rapidly, and your levelling is restricted behind story chapters. Add this to the fact that there are some teething issues (you lose if party leader dies, you rarely have the best party for certain boss fights in early chapters), and it's reasonably difficult.

XIII-2 fixes pretty much all these issues; turns out the game is a lot easier when you do that.

XIV is an MMO, but a relatively intuitive and more sensible in comparison to XI. Still has superbosses of course.

XV... is hard for me to judge. The difficulty is either absurd or tremendously easy, and I struggle to find a healthy in-between.

XVI is easy >!until the FF3 cast betray you, kill your brother, and you're forced to find the Heroes of Dark to form your new party.!< >!From then on, you are forced to use the DK bongo drums to play the rest of the game, making it much harder!<

That was a fake spoiler. Probably.

Overall, FFXI is probably the hardest.

Hardest FF game

Hey,

What's everyones thoughts on the hardest FF game out there, now there are many concepts to each individual game so let's base it off the below

General game difficulty Ability to max level up Full completion (i.e FF7 knights of the round table, FFXV all side quests etc) Locating secret Poi's with only game intel

This last month I've had such a final fantasy binge, went nostalgia 6/7/8/9/10 then jumped to 15 and now on FF7 remake 🤣

Love this goddamn game

If you’re including optional stuff, then XIV takes the cake. It has bosses that are so hard that they take dozens of hours of practice.

I wouldn't count 14 simply because MMO bosses are a completely different thing than single player games. Like, not remotely in he same ballpark. Clearing TOP this expansion was a blast but I wouldn't even begin to try and compare it to the other mainline games boss fights.

13 though? The barthandelus fights, Orphan, and to some extent Cid were all pretty rough as main story fights

13 isn’t bad if you know the roles and how to apply them. Like you need ravagers and a commando to immobilize your opponents to do heavy damage.

But the eidolon fights can be very very tough. I think specifically brynhildr can be a struggle if you don’t know what you are doing.

3 has a bitchass spike in difficulty at the very end making it perhaps the hardest to finish, even if it's not hardest overall. Some games are only hard on optional side content, like 10 but are easy otherwise.

Maybe 12 if we're going by the average difficulty of the overall experience?

I am surprise that people found F12 difficult. I guess the gambit system isn't that intuitive to most people. I am glad we are out of the license board era though. I though both Sphere Grid and License Board were way to limiting in choice and I would prefer traditional leveling rather then the illusion of choice in an overly complicated skill tree. Let's bring back the Job system!

One thing about OG ff12 that I think made it more difficult was that the original license board made the entire party ok at everything rather than really, really good at one specific thing like in the IZJS version. It makes the post-game content that much more of a slog when your party has to contend with the fact that they’re essentially jacks of all trades going up against giant bosses with gargantuan health bars.

It’s either FF3 or FF2, depending on your tolerance for unfair gameplay.

FF3 has a job system that strongly encourages specific lines of play for certain dungeons and bosses, and is topped off with a brutal 2 hour stretch in the final dungeon without a single save point along the way- die, and you will be starting over from the beginning.

FF2, at least in its original incarnation, has a difficulty spike so nasty toward the end of the game that if you haven’t built your party correctly, it can literally become impossible to beat. What’s worse, in the NES version, your stats can decrease if certain actions are not taken in combat. It can be tedious, repetitive, and fruitless if you aren’t prepared for it.

Pick your poison, but these two are the “hardest” in my opinion due to how unbalanced the game design is at times.

If you’re looking for a challenge that is well balanced and fun, but requires a lot of strategy and planning, FFX is a solid choice. There are a lot of bosses that take full advantage of X’s combat system and it creates a solid experience overall.

I agree, I played remakes of both 2 and 3 and they both had mandatory sections that were severe spikes in difficulty. Don't get me started on that Garuda fight in 3, I found out that you needed a full party of jumping dragoons with a few wind spears to finish that fight quickly, otherwise Garuda would wipe your party in 3 or 4 turns. I also had to do some MP grinding in 2 so that I could make it through pandemonium with enough heals and magic. It was maybe more tedious than difficult but the stat system in that game was terrible.

1 upvotes on reddit

I guess that is a player type difficulty because I was very good at FF12 both versions. The gambit system just click with me and I was able to create some awesome combinations and solutions even when I was underleveled in some scenarios. I would like to see the job system return. I want to know how that would play in an Action RPG type game that isn't an MMO.

I often see people that have problems in FFV. But when you beat it once and know the bossess, the game is not that much challenging.

The FFIII (original NEs version) has the most difficult last area in franchise. There is no discussion about that. It's so hard, even devs apologise for that.

Many depends on version you play. FFI - III is peace of cake in PR, but in their true, original form, beating them, as intended (without save states and other emulation cheating) is much more difficult than beating any other game in FF series.

I don't count extra/end game challenges. I think about difficulty of "main story" game. The discussion about difficulty in extra content is totally different thing.

FFV is only hard if you're both bad at figuring out the job system, and bad at figuring out the gimmick bosses. You really only need one of those two skills to be able to brute force your way through the game, and once you become familiarized with both things, even challenge runs like the 4 job fiesta become not much of an issue. I've even seen a lot of people do a fiesta run on their first time through the game.

a fiesta style first play likely easier for someone to mentally approach if theyve never played a job system before

plenty like FFs where 'jobs' are static roles, and you have enough tools (w/ items) to beat the whole game with any legit combination. id imagine this is how lots of kids settled into Anthology after a few hours of experimenting

I think ff3 is just hard because you really don’t need to grind during the game then the last area is an insane boss gauntlet of death where everything is harder, and when you die you lose hours of progress

Once you know that you can just watch tv while you mindlessly level everyone up and then go win.

FFV becomes easier the longer playtime you have, because of the Job system. You can combine Chicken knife + Rapid fire then Mimic with a Mime.

Excluding the MMORPGs, if taking about 100%ing, definitely FFX. If just beating the story, probably FFIII because not being able to save in the crystal tower, getting merc’d by CoD and then having to replay the last 2hrs was horrible.

FFIX is harder to 100% in my opinion, some of the achievements are basically impossible without assisted tools, and history wise FFT comes to my mind, if you're not a grinder or don't care about leveling up it's REALLY tough, especially with soft locking if you don't know wassup.

It’s a fair point. FFIX’s difficulty for 100%ing is basically down to 3 areas - jump rope, treasure Hunter s rank and Excali 2, and doing those is definitely harder than completing sphere grid/maxing stats/dark aeons and penance etc.

Especially because they’re all missable and you can never go back to complete after certain points.

Original FFIII. You cant save at any point in the last dungeon and Dark Cloud literally only spams one attack which is basically throwing a truck at the party.

Yep, I've been playing FF for 2 decades, and I still suffer to manage every single member to act as I want. But still, I can say FF4 3D is a good entry on the series, the story and objectives are really simple, even the difficulty is between easy-medium most of the time.

The only downside I see on this game is the 5 members party.

Which Final Fantasy game is the hardest for you ?

Posted by ButzK · in r/FinalFantasy · 5 years ago

Personally mine was FF1 ( NES). Fuck everything about it. The long dungeons, the limited magics and no phoenix downs, the brutal difficulty spike forcing grinding, the Chaos Shrine in the past, and how can I forget about Warmech who showed up and almost wrecked my party before I had to fight Tiamat, fortunately my white wizard survived and I was able to revive everyone.

Some people say it's FF3 but I never got that impression. I played the Famicom version ( I don't own a DS anymore and I don't want to emulate it) and the only fights that gave me troubles were Salamander and Garuda, the rest was easy. Even the Dark World was easy, I did it first try, only thing that almost killed me was Ahriman.

Having played and beaten every main series entry except 2, the 13s and 15, it would have to be Famicom 3 for me, and it isn't particularly close. The endgame dungeons are long, the encounter rate is high and the final boss is a challenge even if you're over leveled. Famicom 2 gets an honorable mention, not b/c it's hard per se, it's just so bad I couldn't finish it.

I think it's just that you have to absolutely make sure you have your strategy just right and some of the battles can take so long compared to a lot of the other games. I tend to find the difficulty in it goes a bit up and down and there's not many opportunities to grind.

Ranking the series based on Difficulty

Posted by yungdownsmash · in r/FinalFantasy · 1 month ago
post image

The tiers aren’t ordered and have no bearing on what I think of the game overall. This is also based on a first play through with no prior knowledge on how to break the games. As a whole Final Fantasy games aren’t that hard compared to more hardcore stuff like SMT, but thats part of the appeal. It’s funny remembering that I thought these games were hard as a kid because I would avoid enemies until I got stuck at a boss and wouldn’t know what to do.

FF4: I’m talking about the DS version specifically. Every boss is a difficulty spike and the final dungeon is harder than the Crystal Tower imo. I couldn’t beat it with my characters in the 70s.

FF10: Every other boss acts as some sort of wall.

FF3: Crystal Tower

FF13: Surprisingly challenging although it’s kinda artificial since the game railroads progression.

FF5: Best difficulty curve in the series. I like how the final dungeon is way too hard but the extra content prepares you for it.

FF9: Teetering on the easy side, but some bosses gave me trouble. Vivi bailed me out by being elemental immune a lot of the time.

FF6: Pretty balanced game. I think the Ultima spam problem is way overblown. You don’t get it till late game, you have to grind a lot to teach it to multiple characters, and it costs a lot of MP. People are essentially complaining that grinding made them strong.

FF12: I’ve only played the original but I’ve heard TZA is easier. That being said I thought it was perfectly balanced.

FF1: Not much to say here. Just don’t have a trash party.

FF7: Besides Demon Wall this game was surprisingly easy. Cloud gets so strong since he rarely leaves the party and boss mechanics are simple.

FF15: The healing system essentially breaks the game. You can’t get one-shotted, you’re invincible while healing, and you can take as many potions into battle as you want. Just think Botw healing system. If you have potions, you’re immortal. This is based on the vanilla game. Maybe it’s been updated.

FF16: The will-o-wisp ability and item that makes dodging easier (not the timely ring) makes this game a cakewalk. The DLC bosses are pretty hard though.

FF2: This one is hard to place. It’s easy for the game to just break itself, but it can also be really hard with unfair encounters. Also the final boss is either a joke, or really hard depending on if you missed the blood sword or not. This game probably deserves its own “toss up” tier.

FF8: Its hard until you realize how the junction system works. Then it’s the easiest game in the series. That being said, breaking the game is part of the fun.

Bonus: FFX-2: This is another toss up because so much of the game is optional. The difficulty completely depends on how much side content you cared to do. Personally I couldn’t wait to get this game over with which made it kind of hard.

Here is the thing, if you think that Final Fantasy X is hard but Final Fantasy VIII is easy, is because you didn't put the same time to understand the mechanics of either game. Which means that Final Fantasy X can be beaten without understanding the mechanics of the game, and that makes it really easy.

If the Chocobo Race counts, then Final Fantasy IX's Jump Rope counts (and so do all the mini games in Final Fantasy X-2, or Final Fantasy VII's virtual fighting one).

OP might have played a version of the game without Penance, and even then it can be cheesed, and even then the fight is not really hard, it just takes like eight forevers to grind the stats for the full grid.

I mean, it’s kinda like asking if kingdom hearts 1 is hard and citing the unknown & Sephiroth. They’re challenges most players never conquer and they hold minimal value to the lore of the series.

I wouldn’t say it’s fair to say X is hard because of the bosses/minigames you cited, but I would absolutely add a footnote that X has some of the toughest postgame fights for sure. XII probably holds the title for the hardest postgame fights, like holy shit some of those hunts and trial fights are insane.

Totaly agree. I've beaten X without even knowing what I was doing way back in the day, never using buffs/debuffs, not getting the best weapons, just winging it with the sphere grid. I only had to look up the strategy for the final boss. FFVIII is easy when you break the junction system, and use the card game to your advantage. If you dont, it can be a real pain in the ass. I had to restart a few times because I ended up stuck in spots due to bad planning with GF abilities, not drawing enough, leveling too much etc.

Which version of 1 are you basing this on?

Also, VI is easy before Ultima. Terra and Celes can easily heal the entire party to full in one cast for most of the game, and things like Edgar's tools and Sabin's blitzes can take enemies out extremely quickly. And Osmose makes it trivial to maintain full MP.

And for XVI, I don't think you should judge the game based on the use of what are essentially cheat items. But I'd still rate the game in the easiest tier (at least until you get to Final Fantasy difficulty in the second playthrough).

I just finished it a couple hours ago. Definitely one of the harder ones. It's easy to over extend in the first 1/3rd of the game and run out of resourses. Combat gets easy after you get lost forever and unintentionally grind like crazy. I had to google the canoe location. I had no idea you could walk out the edge of town into the woods. I actually got stuck there in 2003 and never came back untill last week.

When I found the caravan I was pissed.

Chaos healing for 9999 can really be a drag, also. I beat him on attempt 2, but barely.

I actually have more deaths in this one (3) than most final fantasies. A healing staff and gauntlet made grinding easy, but the wishy washy difficulty spikes and rampant status effect put this in the sweaty category for me.

Youll never really find an official game thats harder than FFIV on the DS, generally final fantasy games get easier with time, the original japanese version of FFIV on SNES for example had a pretty decent difficulty, then it got easier and easier with every single rerelease to the point where the pixel remaster version became a joke. Final Fantasy XV has a decent difficulty if you play with the no experience accessory and dont use the weapon called "Ragnarok" and the super armors (free weapon and armor added with a dlc and both are ridiculously busted), It also has a Hard mode patch made by fans that limits the item usage in battles and raises the enemies stats which makes the game a lot more fun.

Final fantasy tactics can be difficult if you haven’t built your job classes more balanced and mindfully. The “mid game” boss story arch can be almost impossible if you aren’t equipped properly. There’s points in the game where you start a plot point that takes you into a series of consecutive battles you can’t leave, so you can ruin your progress if you aren’t in the habit of making multiple save slots.

I feel like FF8 was one of the easier ones, but only because it's so easy to abuse the Junction system.

I agree with others that FF13 is probably the hardest one. It required frequently switching your tactics, even for normal battles. It throttled progression by story, preventing you from overleveling and even overgearing content. It forced you to use the whole party throughout the story, further requiring you to adjust your playstyle. Also because you healed to full after every battle and there was no MP, they were able to actually make normal battles pretty challenging since the difficulty focused on actual risk of dying over the older "difficulty by attrition" style of trying to wear down your resources.

People often complain that it was just a matter of hitting "auto" all the time. But I think that completely ignores the macro complexity of the Paradigm system, and also clearly forgets that many of the early games involved a whole hell of a lot of hitting Attack/Fight repeatedly since the standard basic attack was your strongest ability for most of the game (no cost, quick selection, usually high damage). Also "auto" would often choose unnecessary abilities, like casting Veil when the enemy doesn't use status effects, or prioritize things poorly.

The older games like FF1 and FF3 are difficult, mainly due to their lacking a lot of quality of life mechanics. The DS version of FF4 is a nightmare. The ramped up the difficulty from the older versions and ordinary monsters can wipe out your entire party in 2 turns if you're not over-leveled.

The later games are generally easier. As others have said, FF13 does have a harder main story cause you can't over-level. The battle system requires you to think and move fast as a means of winning. The extra content at the end is incredibly difficult as well.

Of the later games, FF15 is definitely the easiest. It's horribly easy to over-level waaay too early in the game. Most people don't even realize they're doing it. Even without over-leveling, you just can't die. The game constantly gives you every opportunity to get back on your feet even if you die. You just need a handful of potions and phoenix downs, which aren't expensive btw.

FF1, FF2, and FF4 are all pretty hard. FF2 is hard because of its extremely unorthodox leveling system. If you take a few hours and grind up your stats, you'll get through the game. FF1 and FF4 can be pretty unforgiving though. I remember back in the PlayStation era, I got FF8 for Christmas one year, then played FF7, and then picked up Final Fantasy Chronicles, and found FF4 was much harder than anything I had played to that point.

I'll say 6 is probably the easiest. It doesn't take much to overpower the entire cast, and they can all learn the full arsenal of magic.

Personally, I insist 13 is one of the harder games. Some people claim otherwise so maybe I've played it wrong. But 1) money and upgrading is very limited through the entire game, you'll never upgrade all your equipment. 2) The upgrade path of each character is restricted by bottlenecks in the game, so you cannot grind encounters and fight a tough boss at a higher level. 3) It's very easy for ordinary battles to go completely south and you game over if your leader alone falls, so it's not like you can play to the last standing and recover so long as they have LIFE or a phoenix down.

I agree that XIII is the hardest Final Fantasy I've played in the 3D era. It's because no matter how OP you are, you will never be able to mindlessly attack and heal through battles the way you can in most FF games. Strategy matters to the end. If you try to sleepwalk through every battle, you can be fully maxed out with the greatest gear and accessories, and an original mob can take you down if you do the wrong thing at the wrong time.

I think XII is second hardest, but mainly based on bosses. Even if you play the vanilla 12 that lets anyone be anyone without regard for jobs, there are battles that can test a Lvl 99 party with the best gear, but most mobs aren't too scary unless you're in some secret areas here and there.

Games like VII don't truly register as hard for me in the sense that you are able to cheese it using legal game mechanics. It takes a mindnumbingly long time to do, but you can become strong enough to beat Ruby Weapon with just attacking and healing and using curatives reactively. To me, that just means you can substitute strategy for time, which means the game can easily be made tedious rather than difficult.

Lastly, I think X is the easiest Final Fantasy I've ever played. There is very little that is of any real challenge, and with the fully turn-based combat, it is so predictable, member changes are instantaneous, and you get several hard-hitting fully controllable meat shields with the summoning mechanism. It was the first FF I ever played and even then, I was rarely tested because you have just so many HP bars the enemy has to get through before you're fully dead. It's still a great game, but it's so easy that you have to do so much optional content just to keep it somewhat challenging.

What is the hardest Final Fantasy game

Key Considerations for Determining the Hardest Final Fantasy Game:

  1. Gameplay Mechanics: Some games have more complex battle systems or mechanics that can increase difficulty, such as the Active Time Battle (ATB) system.

  2. Enemy Difficulty: Certain titles feature tougher enemies and bosses that require strategic planning and grinding to defeat.

  3. Leveling and Progression: Games that have slower leveling systems or require more grinding can be perceived as harder.

  4. Optional Content: Many Final Fantasy games include challenging optional bosses or dungeons that can significantly increase the game's difficulty.

Notable Mentions:

  • Final Fantasy III (NES): Known for its challenging difficulty due to limited save points and tough bosses, especially in the final dungeon.

  • Final Fantasy VII (original): While not the hardest overall, the optional boss Emerald Weapon is notoriously difficult and requires significant preparation.

  • Final Fantasy X: The Dark Aeons and the optional boss Penance present a high level of challenge, requiring maxed-out characters and strategies.

  • Final Fantasy XII: The game's Gambit system can be complex, and the optional bosses like Yiazmat and the Hunt Club challenges can be very demanding.

Recommendation: Many fans consider Final Fantasy III (the original NES version) to be one of the hardest due to its punishing difficulty and lack of modern conveniences. However, if you're looking for a challenge with more modern mechanics, Final Fantasy X with its optional bosses is a great choice.
