What Redditors are Saying

What to Include in a Resume

TL;DR Include your contact information, a summary or objective, work experience, education, skills, and certifications. Tailor your resume to the job you are applying for by highlighting relevant experiences and skills.

Tailoring Your Resume

One of the key takeaways from the discussions is the importance of tailoring your resume to the job you are applying for. Even if your past work experience isn't directly related to the new field, you can highlight transferable skills. For example, if you've worked in retail, emphasize your ability to work under pressure or in fast-paced environments [1:1], [1:2]. It's crucial to make every job experience relevant by focusing on the skills that apply to the position you're seeking.

Essential Components

A well-structured resume typically includes several key components:

  • Contact Information: Always include your name, phone number, and email address.
  • Summary or Objective: A brief statement that outlines your career goals and what you hope to achieve in the role.
  • Work Experience: List your jobs in reverse chronological order, focusing on achievements and responsibilities that highlight your skills [3:1].
  • Education: Include your educational background, degrees obtained, and any relevant coursework or honors.
  • Skills: Highlight both hard and soft skills relevant to the job [3:2].

Additional Sections

Depending on your experience level, you might also want to include sections such as:

  • Certifications: Any additional qualifications or certifications relevant to the job [2].
  • Volunteer Work/Extracurricular Activities: Particularly useful for those with limited work experience, these can demonstrate leadership, teamwork, and other valuable skills [4:2].
  • References: While not always necessary, including references can be beneficial if they are strong endorsements of your abilities [2:1].

For Students and Entry-Level Applicants

If you are a high school student or have minimal work experience, focus on extracurricular activities, volunteer work, and any skills gained through school projects or clubs [5:1]. Use specific examples to illustrate your accomplishments and contributions [4:3].

General Tips

  • Keep your resume concise, ideally one page, but no more than two pages.
  • Use bullet points to clearly articulate your achievements using formats like STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result) or PSR (Problem, Solution, Result) [3:1].
  • Avoid making your resume too flashy; focus on meeting the minimum qualifications for the role [4:1].

By following these guidelines, you can create a resume that effectively showcases your qualifications and helps you stand out to potential employers.

ORIGINAL POST

I passed my NREMT (hooray!) and now comes the next step: getting a job. I have no prior medical experience, so I wasn’t sure what should go on my resume. I’ll include my schooling and NREMT obviously, however I wasn’t sure if I should put my past work experience considering it won’t be relevant.

What did you put on your resume?

Hot_Penalty_671 · 5 months ago

Put past work experience but tailor it so that it related to EMT. Did you do uber eats? That’s someone who knows the roads and how to get to locations safely. Work in customer service? Great, you have customer service skills. A nanny for years? You’re good with kids. You can find something in pretty much every job. Plus, just having work experience is good. People who have never had a job have to learn many small things. I’ve trained new workers on things like how to clean, wearing appropriate clothing, how to communicate if you need to take time off. So any work experience tells employers you won’t need as much hand holding

Post your past work experience and people might be able to give you ideas on what to write.

Why wouldn't you put your past work experience on your resume?

Many new grads who worked outside of healthcare put down their clinical rotations in place of work experience and list all things they did similar to work experience

Brief-Chemistry-6514 · 5 months ago

I guess because if it’s not healthcare, it seems irrelevant

1 upvotes on reddit
911EMT · 5 months ago

Make it relevant.

Did you work retail? Highlight how you can work under pressure.

Did you work as a cook? Highlight how you can work in a fast-paced environment

Resumes are literally to showcase work experience.

I also had this problem cause I only had restaurant experience. It sucked finding a job because of it cause I kept being told I needed prior med experience.

Just put what you have any experience is still work experience. I’d recommend maybe doing some of the FEMA courses so it shows initiative and if you still can’t get a job, do something in a related field. Dispatch, driver, scribe, even janitorial at a healthcare facility something to say you have some med experience and to get you more comfortable in the environment.

Does your State require you to affiliate with an agency in order to get a State license?

Edit: quick post history search appears the answer is yes. You can start the counter a little bit earlier if the answer is no.

If you wanted to spend a little money and be silly, you could get licensed in another State, like one of the ones in the EMS Compact (https://www.emscompact.gov/). You could also add on other certs.

Whether it's worth doing is going to depend on how competitive you are looking to apply and whether you can pull off the interview. I find that having my resume be interesting enough to intrigue people gets me more interviews, if for no reason than I stand out. It's also why my resume itself is in very different fonts, uses a different format, has a photo, etc.

If they get 200 applicants, "NREMT" stands out way less than "Licensed EMT in Washington, Utah, Wyoming. Privilege to practice in 23 additional States. WA Medical Assistant - Phlebotomist. WA Nursing Assistant - Registered."

That leads to a curiosity and people wanting to know why, and opens up a chance to explain that I'm looking to take shifts in an ER so that I can have both a hospital and pre-hospital experience.

I plan on quitting my job soon, but I don’t want to do it before having another job lined up. What all do you guys put in your resumes? I have the basics like setting up/breaking down operatories, taking x rays, greeting patients, I’ve got all my certifications listed, most recent jobs, my education, experience. I feel like I’m missing a lot but I’m not sure what’s relevant to add and what isn’t. So what all do you guys put on your resumes?

If you can add that you are bilingual or trilingual or how many languages you know, it’s better too!!

That all sounds good. I would add a couple of references if you have them like an instructor if you took any assisting classes. I would also attach a photo of yourself to your resume so that way when they look back on it they have a face to the name.

What things should be on my resume?

Posted by ClassicCdg00 · in r/Resume · 2 years ago

I'm asking because I want to start my resume over from the ground up. I only have two small jobs I've done that don't really have anything to do with the job I want to go into. They helped me gain a few skills I can apply elsewhere, but it just felt like my resume was a "one type fits all" rather than a focused one.

I don't know, I just feel a little lost and confused right now with all that's going on and just need the help.

Well first of all, it needs to have your experience, education, skills.

Experience should be what did you do for those jobs, and what did you succeed at.

Education: Just your standard education

Skills: You gained a few skills, apply to it.

Agree with this. And don't be generic about your projects or volunteer work, be specific about what you actually accomplished and the results. Any time you can include metrics (numbers) is great too! Example: "Volunteered at the local Humane Society by walking 4 dogs a day twice a week" instead of "Volunteered at the Humane Society".

For someone at your stage, volunteering is probably one of the best ways to get some experience and exposure that you might not get from work alone. If you know what you're interested in, then a good idea would be to volunteer at orgs that are in the same ballpark.

PS: The resume writing guide in the wiki of this subreddit is a great resource—highly recommend checking it out!

I look for 2 plus years at least for each company and like to see promotions at the same place. If somebody has multiple switches in just a few years it is almost always a no go.

Recruiter here!

Standing out is not what you want, as the resume that stands out gets rejected. Resumes are built for one thing and one thing only, and that is to show you meet the minimum qualifications for the role. If you make it flashy and fancy, or filled with brags it fails to get results as it does not show your you meet the minimum qualification for the role.

As you are still in HS I am going to assume you are going for Customer Service and Retail Associate positions.

The keywords for those positions is going to be close to the following.

  • GED/DEGREE Customer Service, Sales
  • Multitask under deadlines/pressure, showing up to shifts on time
  • POS systems, basic computer knowledge, and basic math knowledge.

You need to show those in bullet points under previous jobs/internships/projects/volunteer activities/ etc, and show HOW you used them and the reason or result of them.

As an example, here are a few bullet points for customer service/retail you could use.

  • Gave customers correct change by adding and subtracting cash.
  • Used a desktop computer to read company emails, take online barista training courses, and input shift availability into our schedule
  • Upsold drink sizes and gave customers correct change when asked for the bill by performing addition and subtraction if they paid in cash rather than a credit card

Keep the resume to one column, Arial 10.5 font, very little bolding, and make sure your contact information at the top is correct.

Hope that helps!

How do I make a resume?

I’m 16 and want to start working, but everywhere I want to work at/ in my area all require a resume. I have done nothing that I could put on there. I’ve never done any sort of work, never babysat someone, never volunteered, never done anything. The most I’ve done is do chores around my house once in a blue moon. I don’t really know what to put on a resume or how to make it good and I just need help. Do I put thing on it that I do for my school like clubs or academies I’m in? Any after school activities? What classes I have and my grades? Pls help I really want to work but my parents are making me do everything and not even helping me with my resume so I’m asking my internet parents. If you guys have any tips or tricks (also for interviews) please let me know!!

Yes you would articulate any clubs, activities outside of regular class. Use words like strong attention to detail, energetic, proficient, computer skills. You can get many samples by just googling resume for high school student. You can also hire someone to do it for you.

Highlight any relevant skills (teamwork, customer service, etc.), extracurricular activities, volunteer work, or coursework. Be concise and focused. Even for fast food, showing you're proactive, organized, and eager can make a difference. Keep it neat and professional-looking.

Just put your name, contact information, City/State, high school diploma or when you expect to graduate. List your skills, like computer programs, communications, counting money, cooking, etc. If you have any awards or volunteer activities or sports or clubs, include them. It can be short, you don’t need to fill a page. To really jazz it up, add an authentic Objective statement, like “Seeking a first job that will be the start to a successful career, where I may learn valuable job skills and prove my worth.” Good luck!!

What things should I write on my CV/Resume

Posted by Katahawk · in r/Advice · 6 years ago

I know how to write a CV/Resume and I know what to put on it but what are some good things to write about myself? Usually people put 'I am punctual' but it sounds a bit boring when everyone puts that. What are some good things I can put on my CV and any tips?

Depends what the job is. For example, you would put very different things if you were a chef compared to if you were a secretary. Focus on what skills the job would require and put those. For example, a receptionist might need to be friendly, great conversing with people, very detailed orientated, etc.

You should be tailoring your resume to each job you apply... not just sending a general one to many places.

Tailor it, but it's good to just have a basic one outlining your previous job roles and responsibilities, look through job adverts and person specifications and use the same vocabulary

Rather than "punctual" job adverts will say "good time management and attention to detail" include these terms in your CV, an example may be "whilst working on a crucial project I demonstrated my excellent time management and attention to detail by meeting each project deadline"

I am in USA so this may or may not be helpful.

Asking for a photo makes me weary. Are you sure this is a reputable company? Be careful! Other than that...they seemed pretty specific in what details they wanted so I would stick with what they are asking (except the photo)

Good luck!

Sales accomplishments, industry education, summary of skills. It’s pretty rare that a company lists exactly what they want, but when they do, take their advice as literally as you can.

That being said.. Are you sure this is a vetted company? Asking for a picture throws up a warning flag for me. Also asking for a better resume in general while still complimenting your experience. Just something to check.

It is standard to include a photo in certain countries (other than the U.S.), so depending on where they are located, this may not be a red flag. If it is for a US-based job, you are absolutely correct that this is a red flag.

So. Summaries are not read on resumes, so don't oversweat it.

My suggested formula is this:

  • X+ years of experience in field.
  • 2 of your biggest successes
  • 1 humanizing element (hobby, award, non-work related thing to make you stand out)

Hello! Please do not use fatphobic phrases or words such as health. Hurtful language about body image can have significant negative impacts on an individual's mental health and self-esteem. It may also be triggering. When someone is subjected to derogatory comments about their appearance, they may begin to feel ashamed or embarrassed about their body, leading to feelings of low self-worth and poor body image. This can result in harmful behaviors such as disordered eating or excessive exercising to change their body in an attempt to conform to societal beauty standards. Moreover, hurtful language about body image can also contribute to the development of anxiety and depression, leading to long-term consequences on an individual's mental health. Therefore, it is crucial to promote body positivity and refrain from making negative comments about someone's appearance. Even if this was not your intention, you never know who might see your comment. I am a bot, and this comment was made automatically. Have a reddit day!
